This is a good channel. I already knew a lot of the stuff in these videos, but if I didn't, it would be a great way to quickly learn it all. I've only been watching for a few weeks though.
thanks, now i can feel like a l33t arch hacker without actually installing arch though i do have a couple of questions: 1. from what i can tell, i3 uses x11 and i'd like to use wayland if possible; i found sway and i'd like to know if the latest version is compatible w/ mint 2. how do i set up cinnamon desklets on a wm? or will it work out of the box
As far as i know, sway has the exact same configuration as i3. The only thing i'm not sure of is if lightdm will detect it. Desklets may work, but i believe they were intended for the cinnamon DE specifically, so you might wanna experiment with that.
i really want to make people aware of hyprland, because its super customisable, its dead easy to configure with its config files and amazing documentation, and the OOTB config file gives you a really good place to start. i had very little knowledge of how to use / configure a TWM beforehand, and i didnt need a single video guide or any real help outside the wiki. only took me a day or so to get to a state where i was happy with how it looked and how its used.
everything from 17:20 was some of the funniest linux bullshit ive ever seen in my life. keep it up learnix (youre fucked if im even using i3, xfce til i die)
i3 was my favorite for the longest time and I've used a bit of Awesome. A year ago I discovered Qtile which I've barely touched because I don't like the default keybindings. Sway is a nice Wayland version of i3 but doesn't necessarily work on Nvidia depending on your system. It works on my 1050 ti Tumbleweed machine but just kicks me back to the session manager on my CachyOS laptop with a 3050 ti Mobile. I'm about to build a machine with a 7900 GRE so that should run pretty smoothly.
An extremely aggressive “depends” Either people praise you or you bite the curb while FBI is after your ass. At least from what I hear in regards to Hyprland.
I usually use Cinnamon with dark theme and want to try i3. I installed i3 via terminal and logout Cinnamon, choose i3 from login screen and login. Then all app became light theme, the icons not even Mint icons. How can I have the same theme setting on Cinnamon on i3?
Did the i3 terminal actually change to Debian terminal? I think it looked the same as in the beginning? I had the same issue with my i3 - couldn’t change the terminal app😢
You have to change it in the config file. It defaults to "i3-sensible-terminal" which defaults to the terminal that it thinks makes sense such as what a DE already had installed. I personally like Alacritty regardless of the DE or WM I use.
Interesting - thanks for the little appetiser...so I'm guessing that the purpose of using a window manager (outside of bragging rights) is to be as lightweight as possible if even XFCE (for example) is chugging too many resources? I'm also guessing that if you did use Linux like this 24/7, you'd be shaking off all the ladies just desperate to be a Linux groupie?
The title is misleading. It should be TILING Window Manager. You're completely excluding the *box line (Open/Flux/Black), WindowMaker, IceWM, awesome, and enlightenment, just to name a few. Personally, I have been running openbox as my primary window manager for longer than I can even recall. Openbox, tint, variety, albert, lxsession, thunar, and plank are my typical batch of installs for a comfortable desktop. I've been fiddling with herbs and hyprland, but for getting things done, I tend towards openbox. I've gotten so used to shading windows that I consider it a must have feature.
I love you learnix

I'm gonna turn my Xfce Manjaro into antiX now that I am armed with sacred knowledge.
And if I don't suck seed - I'l find you!

Hey learnix, on my last xubuntu installation i installed i3 just to try it and my message window on xfce was permanttly changed to i3's
Am I able to run this using 4 Gb of ram. Cuz having Brave open leaves me with 600 MB ram give or take.

Im KDE plasma enjoyer
i love dwm
You should try dwl, its like dwm but for wayland
@@videosenjoyer but dwl doesnt have as many patches as dwm
@@Slash_Dash it has around 110 updated patches and some more stale patches. In my case, it has every patch I used in dwm
Me using gnome watching this
modifier button? is that "Windows" button?
It's the button you choose when you generate your i3 config, it's usually Windows or Alt.

Took me weeks to get 240Hz on i3.
Funny because that was keeping me from daily-driving it.
