Welcome to to Arch, so you just missed a couple steps "adding the desktop:" just like you said you didn't hit enter. And you missed "use network manager" part. If you complete all the steps correctly it is unnecessary to "chroot" at the end. Chroot does come in handy if you need to do a manual intervention (fix something) you can mount the system and fix the more than likely a bad update. good job!
The only time ive ever needed to chroot after the install was to copy over a Windows bootloader for dual booting, but even that could be done later.
Sounds like you had the perfect arch experience. A smooth enough install but with some enforced extra setup to give you that sweet taste of DIY!
A year or so ago I tried to do a custom partition scheme in archinstall and accidentally destroyed the rest of the partitions on the drive. So yeah, be careful with that. Now i just keep a writeup on installing it the way i need
Ouch, I feel that. I have a laptop that I just blow up every time I distro hop. No multiboot or home partitions or anything (mostly so I can't inadvertently muck it up).
You get a thumbs up for saying "c t l" instead of that annoying "cuttle" 👍
LOL
ask a linux user to scale their desktop 1.25x 🙈
Ouch! Haha
Arch is not the "adult distro" that would go to ZorinOS, Linux Mint ect. Arch is a toy for script kiddies to play with. Most of us go through that phase at some point. I did maybe 8-10 years ago. If you care about learning everything about Linux play with arch. If you just want an OS to get real work done pick a different distro.
Fortunately, I don’t really need to do “real work” on my laptop; I just fart around for my own enjoyment. I’ve used Windows at work for years, Linux at home for 7 or 8 years, and MacOS occasionally over the last couple of years. Zorin is nicely polished, as are most versions of Mint, no disagreement there!
Long story short it’s jerking. The majority will use windows or mac without this continuing frictions with OS, settings, configs, packages and other unnecessary shit for basic productivity.
They will, but for the “normal” user (UA-cam, email, Facebook, doing taxes) “friendly” distros like Mint or Zorin could replace those quite readily. The biggest hurdle is that “normal” users have no idea how to install an OS of any kind in the first place, so it’s kind of moot unfortunately.
