Who knows how many versions are out there. I should look through all of my bootleg CD's that a friend sent me a few years ago. I never did go through them all. It is pretty standard stuff but still some really crazy stuff on some of them.
Well, now I know where I can stay when I go to Ireland, lol. What a beautiful country although I have not been there yet, but my daughter told me when she went.
I'm not much of a Vibrato mode guy but Jimi does use it occasionally. Was the studio take done in the Vibrato mode? That's probably the song I was thinking about.
Great tone, are you aware of the Brotherhood of eternal love meeting with Jimi pre this gig?, they were all enjoying the wave of orange sunshine... A dream to have been there huh.
Vibes are very tricky. You have to get them in the correct position in your chain. You have to experiment. I usually have several boost pedals but my vibe is first in the chain which is unconventional. After it, I have a fuzz, a Supa-Trem for the preamp, a treble boost pedal, and then an OCD GE. They all change the sound of the vibe. Then you mix and match until you get the sound you are looking through. Plus, the best vibe sound is always through a big clean, cranked amp. That vibe circuit is very sensitive to amp power. That's why Jimi's sounded so good. All of those cranked Marshalls. My vibe settings don't change. I play with the intensity some between 3-7 but never over 7.

Could you do a video/lesson on the tone catfish blues (Blues album), or if it’s too long at least for the wah solo happening a 5:25 please ? Cheers from France
Hello Lucas. I will check it out. I'm pretty sure I did a video on it years ago but it may not have been about the wah-wah solo. Those are usually pretty difficult and take some time.
@@Frenchmelodymaker Coincidentally, I was playing my version of Catfish in my famous Bassman video, ua-cam.com/video/5PaiDuiLzas/v-deo.html, without being aware of it. It was just stuck in my head. I did a little wah solo at the end too. But, his is way more difficult.
Hey man i was wondering have you got any footage of, or would you be able to record some and post it if you know what hes doing, of what comes immediately after he 'gets down to the bottom' at 11:55, when the drums cut out, right up until he kicks into In from the storm? I know its not massively different to the studio version, but theres a certain bit there i just cant seem to decipher and make sound right, and you're a lot better at translating Jimi to us mortals than I am haha. If i could just see you play that section through, from when the drums cut out until in from the storm, I could work it out from watching you play. This bit (or this whole version) is absolutely magical to me, and I'd love to be able to replicate it as best i can. Thanks Millstap.
@@millstap it's 2:18-2:52 into the track, on Spotify at least mate. That's on this same version of Hey Baby, the one that leads into 'Midnight lighting', and it's the part that leads right into when he's playing that. My mistake, I said it goes into 'in from the storm' before.
@@Kunningstunts Wow, that is pretty difficult. He starts out on a double octave playing both E strings on the 10th fret (tuned down 1/2 step), drops down to 8th fret, and plays the fill on the DG&B strings, 10-8-8 frets, then drops the double octaves (on the outer E strings) down chromatically from the 8th-7-6 to 5th fret but at the 7th fret he does this little flutter on the plain E I assume with his first and second fingertips. That's the only way I can see doing that. It is something I have never really paid attention to but is certainly another unique Jimi'ism. A little flamenco playing by Jimi, lol. Then he goes into the standard beginning of the song from 5-3-1 frets with fills. Keep in mind I usually refer to the chords as if the guitar is tuned in standard E so it would be A to G to F then to D. Hope this helps. It's the double octaves that is new to me on the E strings and the finger flutter. Going to 2:52 would be too difficult to type. He could still be playing that with his fingers, flamenco style which is pretty impressive for sure.
@@millstapThanks a lot mate, that's super helpful! I was close with what I had figured out, but a little off compared to what you're saying here, so thanks. I wasn't doing the double octaves, and I was going from the 9th fret to 8th, rather than the 10th to 8th. A part of it is certainly his dreamy tone too, something I can't really replicate with my cheap gear. I can play the studio version of Hey baby so the rest of it up to 2:52 I've pretty much got, it's just this first bit you've described I was struggling with, and that's the bit that really captured me, it sounds so dreamy, mystical and magical. But hey if you wanted to put up an Instagram story of you playing this bit with your Sabbadius Maui uni vibe and the rest of your kit too, I mean I'd love to see that ;) but thanks mate, you're doing good work breaking down the wonder of Jimis playing for us common folk.
@@Kunningstunts You’re welcome. That certainly isn’t easy to play and getting the fingering is tricky. Just shows how big and flexible his hands were. I never thought of doing a double octave. I play single octaves all the time. I haven’t tried it on the A string. It may only be possible on the E’s. That makes playing a melody on just the E’s pretty difficult. I’m trying to post a quick Jimi’ism video about the opening chords on Wait Until Tomorrow because everyone I’ve watched on UA-cam doing tutorials, including pros, plays it wrong and it’s been bugging me. I’ll see how my Maui is doing. I think I had to rob a part to fix a customers vibe quickly. I may need to replace that part in my Maui.
Maui concert is where you see magic take over the stage with divine Aura and musical genius. ❤️

Jimi's live intros for this song were always nice. He should've recorded the studio take on the chorus mode, would've sounded more ethereal
