  • It's been over a year since I bought this set, and I wanted to share it as an option into exploring stub nib fountain pens. I've seen a few posts recently on Facebook and Reddit asking about what the best entry-level stub nibs are, but not many offer the Mont Marte set as a reasonable and affordable option. I love my set a lot, and it was definitely value for money for me.

Hello! Thanks for the review. Can you achieve the thin upstrokes and thick upstrokes using monte marte fountain pens?

No, a pointed pen. This is a "calligraphy" nib (commonly known in the fountain pen community as a "stub" nib), which is used for broad-edge calligraphy. Broad edge calligraphy scripts include Blackletter ("gothic") or Italic calligraphy.
The type of strokes you're asking about is achieved with a pointed pen, or flex nib. This involves a pen with a nib that has flexible tines that spread easily with pressure, creating those thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes. An entry level into this type of pointed pen writing script is to use a brush pen, or a dip pen with a flexible nib (a popular one is the Brause Blue Pumpkin nib). A basic set up is around $20 for a decent nib holder (referred to as the "pen" in calligraphy circles) and a flexible nib.
If you want to venture into fountain pens specifically (a pen with an ink reservoir) with flexible nibs, the cost sharply increases to around $150 as the entry level flexible nib of decent quality. I don't advise this route unless you definitely know you'd like the experience.
