Loads of critics have missed the point of this synth entirely. It's like a best of Roland sound library with a classic look. It's absolutely beautiful.
VA synths are capable of standing on their own pretty well I think. Like my original Nord Lead or the Waldorf Q. Both sound fantastic and have their own uniqueness. And are not trying to be anything other than what they are. But I get a bit uneasy when VA's are used to re-create something on the back of a solid legacy like the Jupiter 8. I get why they put it out. This will greatly appeal to the user to whom the original is out of reach, and are happy with "its close enough". The flexibility of the VA in principal is hard to beat and it can make for highly customizable and performance oriented unit. And sofar from what I hear it is reasonably close enough to the original to give most people a good impression of what the old instruments were all about. And it would be ignorant of me to call a VA reproduction 'lazy' or 'roland phoning it in". They have clearly put a lot of effort into the entire package to make the most of it. Roland however fumbled the ball with the TR-08 and it took them several firmware updates and a hardware revision to get it into something close to worthy of the legacy. Meanwhile Behringer swept in with a pure analog alternative that killed it in sound at much less cost. And was much more faithful to the original. Behringer also proved it could recreate the Moog D in pure analog and come quite close to the original, and give it modern features while recreating the experience of the original to a T. And at reasonable cost. Korg also reproduced their MS20 in a modern analog kit. I don't know why roland cant do the same.If they did we wouldn't have to put up with the potential build quality issues of Behringer.
wishus knight - My guess is that it is riskier and more difficult for Roland to make large true analog instruments again because of differences in business model. Analog instruments are more expensive to build and less profitable. Unlike Sequential Circuits/Dave Smith Instruments and Moog, companies that returned specifically for the analog revival, Roland has been making digital instruments almost exclusively, and continuously, for a long time. Korg, on the other hand, has always been more willing to experiment and take risks. Still, Roland has dipped its toe back into the analog waters in recent years by partnering with other companies. So maybe there's hope. I think I could thoroughly enjoy having a true recreation of the Jupiter-8 as well as a Jupiter-X. The X seems to provide easier access to essentials than than the Xm. I'd want a magnifyer for that screen, though.
@@anonymoushuman8344 Totally with you on everything you're saying although, wouldn't it just be nice to compose and produce a worldwide hit record? Any good synth would do for that! My focus is shifting away from the gear and more toward delivery.
@@wishusknight3009 Oh the Nord Lead. Never been the keeper of one although, still on the wish list. I reckon the Nord Lead 3 for its lit encoders and broad routing possibilities is the one I'd like. I've never seen a Waldorf Q anywhere to play with. I was most gutted when my JP8000 broke down. It's a fiddly fix on those capacitors and so, I sold it for £350 as spares about 18 months ago :( . Nice that the Supersaw is included in Jupiter X's, 4 oscillator V3 model update though :)
Neil, thanks for taking the time to do this symposium of presets of the Jupiter x. Im not a real keyboard player, but have payed my dues plying my trade performing airframe maintenance on commercial aircraft and just love where the sounds of the Jup 8 and X take me to another world. I expect my Jupiter X to arrive in a few days. Thanks again, friend.
Thanks for taking the time to comment - interestingly I worked in the airline industry for 20 odd yrs - mostly flight ops/OCC but did a lot of MRO work with EFB/techlogs. That's great about getting an JP-X - I have a FB group full of great contributors who are very experienced and lots of great information to get you up and running!
Hey Neil, what OS is your JPX on? Mine is a prerelease and i’m pretty sure I’m up-to-date on it, but these scenes don’t sound familiar... are they all factory ones? They sound fantastic!
@JimDaneker, your pre-release J-X had the same 5 Preset banks (of 16 Scenes each) that the Xm does. JUPITER-X system program 1.20 adds 2 more banks of Preset Scenes up front in banks 1 and 2 that you probably don't have and that the Xm doesn't have (if they put it in a firmware update for the Xm it risk overwriting 5 months of user Scenes). Those extra two banks include Scenes created by folks like Gattobus with the same pre-release system you have. You should definitely update, as 1.20 fixes a lot of JUPITER-X bugs as well. In Neil's video, at about 10:27, that where his Presets start matching the earlier set. Everything in the first 10 minutes is new.
@@RobertSaintJohn Thanks buddy. I did update to 1.20 when it came out, but my scenes definitely don't match Neil's here until the 10:27 mark. I just looked at the patch list and apparently I'm missing the new banks 1 & 2! My system info shows I'm on 1.20.. weird! I'll have to investigate how to get those!
Peter Kubbenga Not available for the Xm at this time. Maybe they’ll figure out some way to do so. I think they were concerned that adding it to an Xm update would overwrite the user’s own Scenes, as some of us had the Xm since November. It may also be that the Scenes depend on the extra key range of the X. Perhaps once (if) the Jupiters get Scene export/import, it will become possible. If I had an X, I would try to document those Scene settings and publish them so that Xm users could at least manually reconstruct them. Both the X and the Xm have the same Tones, so I’m sure it’s possible.
I was also looking at the Montage 6, it’s seems extremely modern and stuffed with features. This machine sounds huge in comparison, So full and alive, Montage seems a bit thin and plastic? Opinions? I haven’t played either in person. Is it just the programming or the converters or what?
I hate to tell you this but Behringer will never get this synth copied. I would put money on it. From a technical perspective, they’re doing some insanely sophisticated stuff with the Jupiter-X. Behringer can get most things right, but good luck with the X.
Behringer are good, however their software side is atrocious at best. My DM12 editor is testament to that. So you'll likely never see even a basic version of the X.

I just got the XM and the scenes are totally different!!!
That was really nice. Thank you
Great sounds
Excellent video! ...Any chance of hearing the Choir sounds?
and Version 3.0 changed everything or what ?
I wish you would do another one explaining things.
Some of these preset arpeggios are cheesy and lame 😒,... But the board itself is very very nice! 👍🏾. Love the sound quality! The playing is great!
ABBA made a lot of money, just sayin.
Pulse2AM still corny though.
8:04 was that from 'the secret wedding' brave heart?
How many preset tones and scenes does the X have compared to the XM (out of the box) please ? Is there a big difference ?
Aftertouch
No difference in scenes or tones.

True. Montage is not bad, but this one is better. More "analog" and built lieke a tank.

Montage is a toy compared to this.
