Great work, Joshua. I found Hart Crane to be hard work. I will go back to him as I now take much longer to read poems than I tried to previously.
    Enjoy you day.

Yeah he really is difficult. I only know “To Brooklyn Bridge” well. With that alone, it has taken me a while to decipher its meaning. I hope you enjoy your day as well, Mark!

Look for The Bridge Annotated Edition by Kramer. It’s quite enlightening in terms of the endless obscure allusions.

The only big book single-volume Library of America poet I have is Walt Whitman. I don’t think I’ve ever read May Swenson so that’s a curious omission on my part. You’ve got some nice books.

I wish I had the Whitman one. Also the Wallace Stevens one. I only have LOA editions for more modern poets. I believe Swenson has been compared to EE Cummings, probably because she experimented a lot with form.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but all things being equal, you can always trust Penguin (& Helen Gardner). And, yes, I also have a complicated relationship with John Ashbery. I love him in small doses, but find him impossible to read obsessively. But I don't easily identify with postmodern literature. Heaney (& Ted Hughes) are certainly my guys. Trust your judgment & return to what you enjoy - such bliss.

Yeah I’m not too sure about post-modern literature either. It just seems unnecessarily obscure. I don’t get any pleasure in being confused. Heaney and Hughes are wonderful poets to enjoy. 🙂

Wonderful collection - I’ll have to check out The Penguin Book of Irish Poetry.
Here’s a playlist I made with some of my favorite poems:

Oh you won’t be disappointed with it. I’m slowly dipping in and out of the first section, and even the translations of the ancient Irish poems are really well done.
Thank you for sharing the playlist. I’ll enjoy looking through this.
