NerdECrafter I also think you should give them your opinion! If they change what is wrong I could see this as a really great kit. Looks so fun, but would I be able to buy one of those yarn holding hooks (what you used to push the yarn through the burlap)?
One difficulty is that specific yarn isnt the easiest to find especially in those colors. I crochet for a living so I use that specific yarn a lot. Its not cheap so i understand the US price. IF it included enough materials. You would think they would have you trace the template out of another paper and cut that out to cut the fabric. I could imagine this being a major disappointment for kids not to finish a project.
carebear38506 yeah that yarn is hard to find in bright colors. I usually can find it in pastels or darker colors, but not bright ones. At least not at my local craft stores.
I haven't worked with yarn much, but I do know that the local Joann's doesn't have very much of that type of yarn, and I don't think I've ever seen it in those colors. If you wanted to buy more to finish a pillow, you'd have to fork out a lot of money for the right yarn. I foresee a great many of these kits ending up in second-hand stores after only one or two uses.
Well I’m very lucky that I have many different kinds of yarn that I’ve saved from the years. But I definitely ran out of that kind then I had a yellow one I think.. I promise I didn’t make a doggy sweater or scarf -maybe I didn’t know it was so expensive-

I actually like the patched pattern you made, reminds me of my tortoiseshell kitty xD however it's a real shame that these kits come with too little materials -_-
I dabble in punch needle and I will say you could have done your punches a bit farther apart but you still probably would have run out. Normal punch needle seems so much easier.
Hey Jackie, maybe its time you gave scholastic links to all your reviews on their kits both good and bad and try to explain what, how and why the kits flop or win? From my understanding, companies get thousands of emails saying something went wrong but very few people explain why and how to fix it. Maybe you could be that change? :)
I think the kit is so easily "fixed" by the company. A better needle (even better give two just in case, they cost NOTHING), a marker, making the pictures a little smaller or the frame a tiny amount larger with other pins and some more yarn. If they would print the designs on 8 sheets OR simply offer more / the original design on their homepage to print them out again it would be perfect! The books always seem so nice and the outcomes are cute too, there is not soo much missing for something great!
I think SaltE likes to watch you suffer. That's just needle punch embroidery, but with yarn. Needle punch with thread is already tricky and frustrating enough when you've never done it before, using chunky blanket yarn is worse. Also, the frame was kinda weird. Usually with embroidery you get a round frame where one piece goes over the other and you tighten it up with a screw. I've never seen a frame like that. When you took out the yarn balls, I already knew that the quantity was not enough just looking at how small they were. They should have at least given you two balls of every color. I crochet, and anyone who either crochets or knits will generally agree that thick, fluffy blanket yarn is a nightmare to work with if you're not used to it because if it's low quality, it sheds like there's no tomorrow, and you cannot see the stitches because it's so thick.
Sorry but I don't agree with not seeing the stitches in thick yarn, in my experience it's the complete opposite, especially in crochet. Stitch definition I'd say depends more on your gauge.
I crochet and bernet blanket yarns are one of my favorite to work with. The stitches are clear and the finished project feels like a marshmallow ❤ I've crocheted embroidery floss as well and that is a nightmare.
I have a punch needle and I FAIL MISERABLY. I don't get how people get the thread to stay in the fabric, I can manage 3 or 4 punches before the thread pops out. I've REALLY TRIED, lol. Over and over, and I just can't do it. Very frustrating craft for me🙁
I’m going to spread a little knowledge here about tetanus :). You can’t get tetanus from rust. Tetanus is gotten from the Clostridium tetani bacterium. The only way to get tetanus from a rusty object is if that object is also dirty in some way that leads to the bacterium being on it. In general, tetanus is acquired through exposure to soil in open wounds, especially deep puncture wounds.
I don't understand why they charge so much (especially in Canada!) for these kits and NOT give you everything you need. I get super salty too when I don't have enough materials in whatever kit I'm using

I’m genuinely curious, if you’d followed the exact colours and positions of colours of the patterns, would there have been enough yarn for that? Hey Jackie! I had an idea. What if you use the amount that you paid for the craft kit, and tried to buy equivalent stuff to remake the craft? Just thought it might be fun. Love your videos
Chai Tea I’m a crocheter, and I know that yarn used for the kit can be expensive. Even at the cheapest craft store I know it is 8 USD. The amount of yarn in this kit is like 5% of a normal skein of that yarn. (Bernat blanket yarn if you were wondering) I’ll go by ten because that’s the most common price for a skein of that yarn. Five percent of ten is .5. That’s basically fifty cents for each little ball of yarn in the kit. Based on that, the kit is way overpriced.

#Nerdeficationsquad I have no idea why they didn't include an embroidery hoop instead of whatever weirdness they provided. And enough yarn. It seems like a simple thing. Though I do like the psychedelic kitty you made
Option...you could trace the picture on tracing paper and pin the tracing to the felt and cut that ...?I know nothing is included for that... but if you have the kit and you are going to the craft store for yarn anyway so you can finish the freaking project...pick up some tracing paper and pins... and a rubber band you can wrap around that stylus looking thing that you poke with so your yarn doesn't constantly fall out. #NerdEficationSquad
Yeah, better yet, just buy the materials to do the equivalent of this kit on their own -.-" Seriously, I feel like someone's kid would have a lot more fun with more colors and options for what they can do, and it's kind of sad that this kit offers so little. I'd be really disappointed if I got this super cool fluffy pillow kit only to find out that I can't even finish a single project because I went just a little off of the template.
@@jampoptart1180 True. My comment was specifically for if you already have the kit and don't want to ruin the cute pic on the other side of the kitty. 👍
Hey Salty this kit was a joke I saw one on the market like it a while ago and it was still crafty maybe not super kit like but it was pretty fun and much better. After a quick google search I found out it’s called plush craft maybe you can review it!
Greg Dino She already has. Although, she hasn’t done the pillows. I’ve done the rainbow heart & dog pillows. With my niece. They’re super easy to work with & really cute. I loved them. ua-cam.com/video/HeKzUhBJ7jw/v-deo.html
I remember doing Klutz kits in middle school and they were just this frustrating 😭 I commend you for your bravery to continue. And they were so expensive too! In Alberta, they were a solid 30 bucks.
I look forward to my daily dose of salt every week. You are raw and brutally honest and that is why I absolutely love your vlogs. Much love from a cape town fan.
There really shouldn't be an excuse for the needle being rusty, it came from the company it wasn't sitting on a store shelf for months where all sorts of things happen like spills. Even though I don't have it to read instructions it seems it was "implied" (if not explicitly stated) that they want you to follow the color guide on the template which sucks because it doesn't give room for playability. I would've wanted to make a mint and purple panda since those are my favorite colors but if I have to follow the guide I'd rather just got buy a $16 panda plush that I could probably find in mint green. Definitely contact the company and if you need to send them the video. I've had a problem with the company and honestly combining everything they did I just stopped giving them my time and money.
It's so frustrating that there isn't enough to finish the project, because I think if there was enough it would've been really cute! This would've been a good kit to continue with that skill. Unfortunately, that type of yarn isn't cheap; it's one of the more expensive ones I've had to use.
I had something like this, but it was tiny pieces of fabric and you had a puncher where you punched the fabric into the small holes to make designs. I made a butterfly, and it was pretty good. If you can find the kit, please try it!
While this kit is not well put together, I would like to say that yarn tends to be a lot more expensive then you would think ( especially chunky yarn like that), and the frame being smaller than the project is a standard for any kind of sewing or needlepoint. That type of yarn could easily be close to ten dollars a skein, and those kinds of frames are around 15 to 20 dollars. I love everything that you do and your so fun to watch. I just wanted to throw a little in from the yarn/embroidery/sewing part of the craft world. Stay salty!!!!!!
Hi Jackie!! I love your videos so much! ;) I was wondering if you could review the all natural spa soaps kit by smart lab I tried it and it works pretty good. If you do that would be amazing!! 😉💗💕😝😁
the idea of a punch needle little padawan is that you cannot lift the needle too much, away from the burlap because the thread/yarn will slide off. For fixing it in place, what it works its a fuseable fabric, then you can do pillows or mats. Burlap is pretty cheap here in Mexico, but you cannot find a punch needle that thick for yarn so you need to find it online. let me find sometime to do a diy at home version without the kit :)
I’d like to suggest a craft kit that I got recently. It’s a pusheen themed cross-stitch kit and as far as I am aware it’s the only one of its kind. I found it at Hot Topic
I have to get this off my chest: I hate Wednesdays. So. Much. But then I lay in bed after a long, tough day and look through my social media and see, you've uploaded a "Don't buy"-video, I just feel at ease. Wednesdays are always so stressful for me and these videos from you just let me relax kinda. (Yeah I always lay in bed when you upload videos because of timezones and stuff) THANK YOU JACKIE!!!! 💗💗💗
For the future - if you do any sort of kits involving a frame, the way this one did, you may like to use an embroidery hoop instead. I have tried to use an embroidery frame when I embroider/cross stitch but I have had similar issues. Embroidery hoops come in various sizes and they're much easier to use than a hoop.
Don't be too concerned about the rust on the needle, Jackie! Rust in itself isn't harmful and doesn't cause tetanus. The thinking is though that if something has been outside long enough to become rusty (i.e. in contact with soil), then it's more likely to be exposed to tetanus causing bacteria. That being said, the craft kit definitely looks frustrating- running out of colours is THE WORST!
I unironically love how the pillow turned out. It looks to me like that's how it was meant to be. That doesn't cancel out the lack of materials, as not everyone is likely to enjoy that sort of design, but I think it's cool. Also, the instructions should have mentioned ironing. If the folds were ironed out of the burlap before it went on the frame, it'd have stretched a lot more happily.
I was gifted this craft kit and I made the ice cream and I enjoyed it, but I do remember being very tight on yarn and having to take yarn away from other places to finish it.
Me and my daughter love watching your videos Jackie, she has asked for polymer clay for her birthday because of you and I am tempted to create my own figures with her. Such a great inspiration thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Ugh feeling very salty because I'm late. Anyone else late? I will try to be on time in the next video my salt is intensifying and TYSM for uploading Jackie! 😍
i actually agree with alot that you have said, alot of people who have done this craft before, have said that instead of big yarn you should use cotton or embroidery floss and you also need you need a stretchy material that has atleast a 1 way stretch on it, but i guess since its aimed at kids who are just exploring their craft side they dont want to provide proper materials.
I am super late, but if you want to make the burlap tighter (similar to canvas) you can use pliers and bend it over the plastic! They have tools like that specifically for canvas to make your own to paint, but pliers are the more accessible and cheaper route!
Yay! I'm so happy you chose the kitty! It's Exactly what I would have chosen! Kitty is now a grain for life! And I totally gave it a 3 as well. When you said 3 I was like😲 the minds of grains are linked!
Great review as expected. It looks like bunka embroilery for kids... and I am worried will the yarn stick on burlap without coming off in use or if kids play with it. -Especially when kids play with it. Normal bunka embroilery works very often need glue to be spread across the backside to keep the thead from coming off, even if normally it's about stuff that's hung on the wall. O..o Also, tip to save templates, you could trace pattern on baking sheet or silk paper instead. -But yikes thar rusty needle and not enough material. O.O I have bad feeling that to make other project with this kit, it's very likely to requite certain type of thread to be used for yarn to stick in burlap. ( Again, I'm comparing it to bunka embroilery where you'll need to have certain type of thread for it to work. )
Ok con #5 is nit picky. I cross stitch and if I'm doing a project the same size as the oriject in this kit I am repositioning the canvas (lack of a better word) inside the frame often; it's part of stitching. Anyway I think the pillow turned out cute, a cute calico kitty 🐱❤
Rusty needle! Yikes! :O I like your kit reviews because they tell us exactly what they contain, how they work (or don't) and any problems. I'm sure you have saved a lot of disappointment and money too. I appreciate that.
OMG I have the same kit and it failed terribly I was missing my needle had to go buy a new needle and it was really hard for me to use the needle blue thing to punch in at my pink yarn so I ended up just packing it away and putting it in a corner so happy that you mentioned the guarantee refund because now I just sent out an email and can’t wait to see which one I will get again! So if you think I did it wrong I have it on my channel.
Playing devils advocate, maybe they have enough materials to do the pattern? And not change up which colors go where. Not saying that’s the right thing to do, but maybe that’s how they qualify it as enough material.
Not trying to be mean. I'm aware of the problem of not 'hearing' the ton of the person who 'speaks'. This is just my opinion but, I think that for better results, especially if you want parents to keep buying their kids your product, you should try several ways to do it and even have more than needed especially when it's a kit for small kids

Yeah, better yet, just buy the materials to do the equivalent of this kit on their own -.-"
Seriously, I feel like someone's kid would have a lot more fun with more colors and options for what they can do, and it's kind of sad that this kit offers so little.

You should totally try the Klutz finger knitting kit! I really like it and am curious how you feel about it
Bobby Smith Thanks
Hey Salty this kit was a joke I saw one on the market like it a while ago and it was still crafty maybe not super kit like but it was pretty fun and much better. After a quick google search I found out it’s called plush craft maybe you can review it!
Wth scholastic :/
Greg Dino She already has. Although, she hasn’t done the pillows. I’ve done the rainbow heart & dog pillows. With my niece. They’re super easy to work with & really cute. I loved them. ua-cam.com/video/HeKzUhBJ7jw/v-deo.html
*sips on salt*
*Yep. Its a crap kit.*
Yesss I needed a SaltECrafter video today! I've had a tough day. Thanks for being awesome Jackie. ❤
Ty Jackie!
The video is 12 minutes or more long but why does it feel so shoooorrrrttttt???
Omg thanks for hearting this ❤❤❤ uu
It's been twelve minutes
It's so frustrating that there isn't enough to finish the project, because I think if there was enough it would've been really cute! This would've been a good kit to continue with that skill. Unfortunately, that type of yarn isn't cheap; it's one of the more expensive ones I've had to use.
You didn't put the scholastic link in the description
I had something like this, but it was tiny pieces of fabric and you had a puncher where you punched the fabric into the small holes to make designs. I made a butterfly, and it was pretty good. If you can find the kit, please try it!

YOU ARE SO GREAT AND HILARIOUS. Today is my birthday and I'm feeling kinda sick but just clicking you vid made me feel better.

The BunnyLove hahaha thx XD
the idea of a punch needle little padawan is that you cannot lift the needle too much, away from the burlap because the thread/yarn will slide off. For fixing it in place, what it works its a fuseable fabric, then you can do pillows or mats. Burlap is pretty cheap here in Mexico, but you cannot find a punch needle that thick for yarn so you need to find it online. let me find sometime to do a diy at home version without the kit :)
also wool yarn will work better, because of the natural fibers interlocking thanks to water and soap. its a long way little sewing Jackie.

Hugs. I know how you feel after a long day. I like to relax with my favorite UA-camrs too 😍 and answer comments from awesome grains
@@nerdecrafter aaaahhhhh we grains love you so much 💓
For the future - if you do any sort of kits involving a frame, the way this one did, you may like to use an embroidery hoop instead. I have tried to use an embroidery frame when I embroider/cross stitch but I have had similar issues. Embroidery hoops come in various sizes and they're much easier to use than a hoop.
Oh no the saltiness XD. Thank you Jackie
Rust is still sorta gross if the needle is rusted moisture is involved...meaning it's not packaged properly....
Your were wrong, Jackie. That patchwork kitty is Very cute.

Brilliant video Jackie! #NerdEficationSquad
I did a rug like this in my life skill class. I know saltiness because I was finishing someone's projects they did it wrong and got lazy with the rug.
You sold make your own kit but like a cleer plastic salt slime. So its both good and sallty
i actually agree with alot that you have said, alot of people who have done this craft before, have said that instead of big yarn you should use cotton or embroidery floss and you also need you need a stretchy material that has atleast a 1 way stretch on it, but i guess since its aimed at kids who are just exploring their craft side they dont want to provide proper materials.
I am super late, but if you want to make the burlap tighter (similar to canvas) you can use pliers and bend it over the plastic! They have tools like that specifically for canvas to make your own to paint, but pliers are the more accessible and cheaper route!
My least favorite craft is with popsicle sticks
Then you won't want to do this ua-cam.com/video/6wOxdAeOmmA/v-deo.html

My least favourite craft is.....
