- Part three of the three part mini series on some things to check when thinking about purchasing a 1959- Mid 1970s Simplicity or Allis-Chalmers Garden Tractor.
Very informative thank you 😊
If you want posi you do not have to flip the gears all you have to do is remove the snap ring ,and the three washers,, pull the gear, put the three washers on the back side of the gear, reinstall gear, the thin washer, install span ring and that puts it in posi you don't have to be spinning gears!!!, (REAL EASY AND FAST))))!!!!
Very helpful to me. After watching this video I found my problem on my AC B10 which quit moving while I was Roto-tilling with the tractor, was the shear pins on the Rt Rear axle hub. Glad that I didn't have to tear into it further. Again very helful and Thanks.
Steve
It is definately a tired old machine. That's the reason it is going to be my next custom project. Good to hear from you Chunk!!
Hey Zippo I love your channel I have a question I have a 1966 101 landlord 10 horse I'm wondering if there is any place to get parts like starter generator voltage regulator if you can help thank you Brother 👍✌
Email me at the address in the description and I'll send you manuals. The S/G and Regulator can be purchased. Zip~
I'm assuming you're talking about a vertical shaft engine. Most of them are easy to replace. Even if you have to remove the oil pan, they pop right out and then you carefully tap the outer edge of the new seal gently with a rawhide or nylon mallet until it's seated. I usually use a piece of 2x4 to get them started. Lay the 2x4 over the seal and gently tap it. Just remember how deep the old seal was or tap until it won't move any more. Be sure to oil the seal before reassembling.
Great videos Zippo! Thanks!
You bet David! I hope they help out! Zip~
Nice videos Zippo! I liked all 3, nice tractors.
I would shy away from any form of "form a gasket" as even the smallest particle can wreak havoc in these small splash oil engines. You can avoid the sticker price by just getting a piece of gasket material large enough to make your own gasket. I've done this many times and keep a variety of gasket materials on hand for just such an occasion.
One of two possibilities. The 1/3 fork is out of place or your shifter pawl is between gears. I'd try the bent screw driver trick to pull both shift forks to their center (neutral) positions and make sure the shift pawl will slide freely in between both shift forks and go into all gears. Best of luck! Takes a little practice, but once you get it, you know you're golden. Cheers!
That B a great tie up t the series. The 2110 is primarily my winter macine, and the 4212 will be a winter backup (blade), but the summer grass hog. so warm weather will be my fix the "lord" time.
Thanks for checkin them all out!!!!
Thanks for this 3 part series. I am going to look at two early 6hp. Broadmoors next week. They don't run but are complete. Both for $100.00 Now I have a better idea how to see if they are worth getting involved with. I am a retired auto body mechanic that likes to tinker with old stuff
This series is on the Broadmoor's bigger brethren, the Large Frame tractors. I will say though, there's a couple things to look for with the Small Frame tractors. Lift one rear fender..the frame should pivot at the shift lever (like an articulating motion), and check the axle to wheel hub holes for being elongated from hard use. The small frames are much simpler machines with a lot less to go wrong than the large frames, but are still very capable machines. Casing point, I dug an entire 5500 gallon Koi Pond with a Broadmoor as well as used it to mow 2 acres twice a week for 5 years, plow snow, spread gravel, grade driveways...so they're every bit as tough as the large frame tractors. Enjoy them! Cheers and have fun. Zip~
@@ZippoVarga I did pick up the two Broadmoors. Chassis pivots are seized but the rest is solid. I have torn one down and had to cut out the bracket that connects the pipe to the forward half so I could get a torch to it and free it up. There is no grease fitting but I am going to add them when reassembling them. Having fun with it so far.
hey zippo. i need help. i bought a 700 it wont move in 3rd ger. whys that. it shifts but acts like in neutral. where can i buy tires at for the front...
If third is the only gear that isn't engaging then the transmission needs to be repaired. It sounds like the keyway that holds the 3rd gear has either sheared or fallen out. Zip~
HIya Joe!! I'll put it on the to-do list to get a video of properly setting up the governor. Some times hande get on things they don't know much about. We'll see if we can get it worked out.
Wow, thanks for all the videos I just pick up a landlord 2012 with a front loader can't wait to get started on it.
Awesome Score Jake! Keep us posted! Zip~
I've been looking for awhile on how to lock these without welding. I lock the mst206 all the t8me but al lot differant. Think a duromax 440 is too much for my 66 same one you have there
Hey Zippo, I acquired a allis b110, and i noticed the axle has a lot of side to side play in it, what would be the cause of such an occurrence?
i forget which way that small gear with the key way went that sits inside that differential, does the flush gear side go outward or does it it point towards the transmission? looks like the boss side points outward in this video? the diagram i have off the internet shows flush gear side pointing outwards, cant see the boss part
Lol I figured! Sonys are great cameras!
I'm glad the video was helpful Steve. It's why I make them. Keep me in mind if you have any further troubles that are not covered in my videos. I'll be glad to help if I can.
Sony Handycam Hybrid DCR-DVD610. Records on both a memory card or DVDR or DVDRW. It's a nice cam with good bang for the buck.
Remember to order an oil pan gasket when you order the seal if it has to be removed from the inside of the oil pan.
Thanks a bunch!
Can you please make a video on how to replace a sheared axle tube? Looks like axle tube shears are a common theme on Simplicity tractors. Thanks in advance
i just purchased a simplicity 3012, it came with a rear tiller, plow, disks, under deck mower, front brush hog, and side cycle bar. It runs but is in poor shape. Where can I find more info on restoration back to stock looking mower. The wiring has been changed, also gas tank. This will me my winter project. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I have a big 10 1965 I am in need of a rear mule tiller drive .Help!!
Social Networks and groups on Facebook are your best bet Hank. Simpletractors.com and Michaelstractors.com are two web sights that cater to these machines. Zip~
Zippo, Thanks for the info. Very useful. I was looking for a 3 point sickle mower to maintain my ditches and ran across what is being described as " 1951 simplicity mule walk behind yard hand with Honda 5 horse - $500". It comes with a 36in sickle mower, a turning plow, a cultivator and a chisel. Based on what I think I heard you say, though, these were not made until 1957. Is that right?
The first walk behind Simplicity was introduced very shortly after WW1, so the year (1951) is probably spot on. The 4 wheel riding tractors didn't come to be until late 1957. Actually, the first walk behind Simplicity was a one wheel machine called a Model "A" and it's Montgomery Ward counterpart was called the Culti Cuter. I have a video up of one I was fortunate enough to acquire some years back. It was an amazing machine and quite rare, having only 700 produced models and only a handful known to exist today. Best of luck with your new Simplicity Walker. There are collector clubs on the Internet on these machines and there's a grand amount of advice and information available for the asking. Thanks for stopping by and for the Kudos! Cheers!! Zip~
Very good :)
Do you have a video on how to hook up the garden till and where and how the belts are put on?
+MUM “MUM MUM Mum” MUM Yes, I have a video posted on that subject.
your vids zippo, very informative, we can't get or at least we don't seem to have any or at least many simplicitys here in nova scotia Canada. they seem to be a real nice little tractor, we do have cub cadets, john deers and masseys and of course your run of the mill garbage big box store stuff. I needed a larger tractor couple of years ago and built my own, may put it on youtube. anyway keep up the vids I really like them as well as 500's vids actually seen you in one of his,,take care..will be watching for more.
500 and the other Sears collectors clan are a great group of guys. I wasn't able to stay long but the time I did spend there was a great time. Thanks for stopping in and I hope you DO make a video for your home brew tractor! Always love seeing other peoples creations! Cheers! Zip~
welp just got done watchin part3 liked it so much im going to sub cuz i just bought a weird vintage tractor that i cant even find on the internet
That Simplicity doesnt have much going for it does it? Everything seems to be shot on it. Even in that state, she'd still outlast any new machine.
ever do anything with old Gravely,,,,i have a 812 that pops out of forward when using it.
Thanks for posting. I plan on watching all your videos when I get the chance. I just picked up a 4040 power max. I have the user manual... would you happen to have a link for a service manual? I've never owned a tractor like this and want to make sure I have some guidance when doing simple repairs/maintenance... like belt replacement etc...
Hi Ray and congrats on picking up the 4040!! Unfortunately, I have no experience with the compact tractor line of Simplicity or Allis-Chalmers, so my ability to help would be limited to generalized maintenance and I too would need to procure a service manual and read through it to help you. If you check Facebook for the Allis Chalmers page, their are a number of Power Max owners that can surely help you as well as on Simpletractors dott com. Sorry I can't help much and I hope the direction I point you in will yield persons who can help. As for the service manual, you can contact Simplicity Manufacturing and get a copy or see if anyone at the suggested sights has a digital copy they would send you. Best wishes with the new Compact Tractor and if you have any questions regarding the tractors similar to those I post videos on, please do get in touch with me and I will do my best to help out. Cheers!! Zip~
@ Zippo. Hey meybi you can help my. I rebyuild a gear box and diferencial. put all tugedor but wheels going in different direction: forward and back. What is bed? Where i make a mistake ?
Hey Zippo, just got myself a Wards Garden Mark. Sort of an "impulse" buy lol. I'm having significant difficulty finding any information on the Garden Marks. Any suggestions on where to go for vital information? I'd like to put her back into original condition, can't even find a descent photo of what its supposed to look like. Looks like maybe originally, it was blue????? Thanks a bunch. Rick
Hiya Garrett! Sorry my friend...I have my sickle bar mower and that's all I have. Keep an eye on ebay!!
hey i have a 20hp vtwin im tradeing for a simplicity 3412 but when i go to lok a 3412 up nothing comes up can you help me heree because im trying to seewhat the tractor looks like
Hey zippo I am looking to by a allis chalmers 914shuttle what do I need to look for on it
The shuttle is the least desired of all models due to so many moving parts that wear out, causing problems and expense. I would source either a strait stick, variable or hydro before considering a shuttle. Zip~
ZippoVarga thanks for the info
Zippo, Would you know anything about getting the steering shaft out of a 79 5020 Allis Chalmers?
i got a b-110 cheap no mower deck the 3spd tranny leaks oil baddly on the left side and the axle looks like a bearing and seal might be bad i cant find any youtubes on overhauling this transaxle i dont have a book on one either. do i have to do a total removal and teardown or can i service this without a total removal
Zippo, have you tried any method to firm up the limited slip in these differentials? I'm going to do something-- stronger springs, shims, or something.
John P You can tighten the bolts/set screws to the limited slip and it puts increased tension on the nylon inserts, but still allows for some slippage when turning. Locking the differential is possible, but then turning becomes difficult since both rear wheels are always driving forward.
I don't believe the ones I'm using have those setscrews/ plugs. Thanks
I have it apart now studying it.
Zippo I just got a 68 b110 hydro lift, but the thing is the axle tube is cracked right before it goes into the differential. We were going to weld it, but the guy told us if you weld the axle tube it will lock your differential. Would it lock it? Should I get another transmission?
Find a replacement axle tube and replace it. Welding just the tube will not lock tie differential of done correctly. Remove it to make the repair. Place transmission on the left wheel (as you're sitting on the tractor) and begin removing all of the external obstacles. Then split the transmission case. Take pictures along the way so you can easily put everything back together. It's a time consuming job, so replacing the entire transmission is the lesser of two evils. Zip~
Thank you for the mini series, appreciate the information! 5/5*
Great videos very helpful. just picked up a 7117 hydro. Looks like the entire diff is covered in grime maybe leaking. How are these differential units lubricated? grease packed or lubricated from trans? thanks!
When you first showed the wrong engine in the tractor, how ease is it to find the right engine to go into it?
The correct engine and finding the right engine is greatly reliant on joining the many collectors groups and learning about each machine, it's model year and the correct engines there in. For example, the 725 pictured would have had the Model 19. They can be found on ebay sometimes, but you're better off finding one from a fellow collector. Zip~
Hey Zippo, when I first start my Simplicity 725 B/S it smoke a little for the first 10 min are so. What can I do to stop this? I put new rings in and hone out the cylinder, I didn't do anything to the valves . 3/16/2018
Did you set the end gap properly on the rings and check that the cylinder was perfectly cylindrical and not elliptical? There are a lot of other things to check when doing a ring job. Also, did you install standard or Chromoly rings? If Chromoly, they won't seat well in these softer older cast iron blocks and also tend to do more damage to the cylinder walls because of how much harder they are than stock rings. Even a bore that's perfectly cylindrical can be over sized from years of use, allowing the stock diameter piston to be too loose fitting in the bore which brings on another potential issue. Piston slap. This is where the piston can rock side to side in relation to the connecting rod wrist pin, causing piston skirt contact with the bore and uneven wear of the rings. Oil consumption will just get worse with any of these conditions. I suggest having the engine bored over to the next level ( .010, .020 and .030 are the three levels) and installing a new piston and rings that have the gap properly set. While the engine is apart, there are many many other specifications that should be checked to make sure there is no excessive wear to any of the other components of the engine. Zip~
I order the rings from Partstree and I did check the cylinder to make sure it was round. thanks for the reply. 3/17/2018
What do you think a allis chalmers 912 would be worth if it is not running and you are not able to really check it out? Would it be worth 200 to 250?
BT
This is not the generation of tractor I collect, so I cannot give you advice on value, BUT....for that price, I'd say you wouldn't get hurt.
is that method truly locking it or just making it posi
Locking. Inside and outside gears each ride on a different shaft. By reversing some of the gears, you're binding both drive shafts together like a live axle.
ok thanks
I just bought a simplicity 725. It runs awesome when u first drive it it drives good but if you do anything the differential spins on the shaft. Any way I can fix it or is the diff. junk?
+Nick N I'm not sure I understand your question, but read the reply to John P's comment below and see if that might be the solution to the issue you're speaking of. Cheers!! Zip~
How's that aluminum jack? Is that from Harbor Freight? How long has it served you? thanks
Both my jacks are HF Jacks and I can't say enough about them. They've served me problem free for over 10 years. Value for the $$ is there if you're in the market, and they keep getting better. Cheers! Zip~
Thanks
I prefer the 1960s era Sears Suburbans.
That's what's awesome about the hobby. There's a vintage Garden Tractor Brand to please us all. Those Suburbans are tough machines! Cheers! Zip~
what camera do you use?
Everything I owns full of slop
