I find that if you heat it slightly further after the quench it can get very very black. What i do for my parts is: quench (sub critical temp) then take it out, heat it till it looks dry, use an oiled rag and continually wipe oil on it. Its a mess but it can have a very strong black color this way

this is mild steel. i think it needs iron to work, but it couldnt hurt to try
