Total Annihilation released only 5 years after this. Unlimited unit cap, 200+ unique units and 3D simulation. Amazing to think how far the genre expanded in such a short period of time.
If memory serves me well, you have that in the Emperor: Battle for Dune, but only if you make an alliance with the Fremen. I could be wrong about that part with the alliance, maybe you can have them anyway, but I clearly remember the worm riders or whatever was it's name. Devastating. That game is definitely overlooked for no reason. Great game, maybe the best in the series.
At the Emperor's Palace: Emperor: The latest report of your performance is troubling news indeed! Randor: Excellency, we... Emperor: Even with my Sardaukar, your forces were vanquished by the inferior Fremen! Randor: But... Emperor: No matter. It shall not happen again on my watch! Mission 5 Briefing: It seems our activities have drawn the attention of Padish Emperor. After our victory, he has sent more Sardaukar to fortify Harkonnen territories. Let us return our attention to the Ordos. They continue to pollute Arrakis with their presence. Use the technology we salvaged from the enemy and remove all Ordos presence from the region. We must act quickly. It's only a matter of time before the Emperor takes us seriously. At the Emperor's Palace on Dune: Emperor: Unbelievable! I give you all the tools you need to succeed! Emperor: And because of your failures, the Fremen are running wild on Arrakis! Randor: Excellency, please... Emperor: No more excuses! Our forces shall greet those savages at my palace! Mission 9 Briefing: We have a special mission for you. One that will determine the outcome of the war. This battle will put our skills and your command to the limit, even with the remaining Atreides within our ranks. The Ordos, Harkonnen, Mercenaries, and Sardaukar have banded together in a powerful alliance against us. We must defeat them all, one by one, before we can parlay with the Emperor. The fate of our race is in your hands. Good Luck!
More proper Fremen mission 3 briefing: "While we were battling the Ordos and their mercenaries, the hated Harkonnen continued to defile our land. We must shift our operations against them. Destroy their harvesting operations and level their base in the region. Show them no mercy. The Harkonnen will give none in return." Mission 6 Briefing: Our scouts report the presence of a full Sardaukar base within Harkonnen territory. Unfortunately for us, they have recently completed a technology exchange for the formidable Devastator Tanks. In addition to their firepower, they pack highly volatile reactors. Disrupt their spice harvesting operations to slow down Devastator production. Then destroy both bases completely. Focus on their Heavy Factories in particular.
I think you under used the sonic tanks. Personally they are my favourite unit and 16 of them are enough to finish off all 3 bases. I also take some siege tanks to bust through walls
@@libraclown5 yup, there are a lot of classic ones from the late 90s: dune 2000, dark reign, total anhiliation, kknd, starcraft, tiberian sun. The 90s was a peak of human civilization!
It's so annoying that you don't have more carryalls. You need one per refinery. You'll save lots of coins repairing a vehicle rather than building a new one, and you will get more coins faster. When your storage is full, make carryalls.
Carryalls are one if my favourite units. In the last level with any if the 3 original houses I would have at least 10 of them. Sometimes 3 or 4 carryalls would come to pick up the 1 harvester. It's quite funny to watch.
yup, and also cover repair facality with buildings or units, thanks to that carryalls will put repaired unit from where they took it and unit don't have to waste time to get to the battlefield
Sometimes, flying a tank out of an active attack because it's in the yellow for damage count is annoying, esp. if you're making a final push. In a perfect storm, it could very well be campaign ending - no more credits, no more spice, you're attacking the enemy's con-yard with minimal units, and they repair/rebuild what you've destroyed before you can re-group - unlikely yes, but over the decades of playing DuneII, this has happened to me at least once.
One thing this classic game got wrong was making Fremen look like total asswipes. They are supposed to be the top figters in the known universe. Every man like Rambo. While in this game they didin't have any vehicles. Only infantry so you could easily crush them to a bloody pulp with a mere harvester before they could deal much damage.
I tried playing this and the first mission kicked my butt. I don't know how I can do twitchy reflexes on this anymore. Then I realized that this was "Extended." Yikes.
@@rasmusolesen5307 This version does not have the proper house names like at the start of the video here. Also, my mentats are still all the same, gameplay seems ordinary? Where do you get the version as shown in the video?
This can't be real. I played the 1st Fremen mission and was instantly attacked by 3 trikes and 2 quads. Even when I captured the base, the attacks continued, and I lost miserably.
Try early attack on the western ordos base while you have the surplus troopers, with them you can capture a vehicle plant to make trikes. Make mission so much easier. Mercenaries only start attacking a tad later. Also best to build 2-3 refineries immediately for more money.
@@uuamenator Thanks, but that's the problem - I never have surplus troops, all Ordos keep attacking non-stop and Mercenaries join in after a couple of minutes.
@@GloriaInvictis By surplus i mean right at the beginning, when you're supposed to capture the construction yard. You're fighting a trike and a couple of heavy troopers - focus fire on the trike then on the troopers, then damage and capture the construction yard. You should only waste one single-soldier squad to capture it (use move command on it when the health is in the red - that way the building is always captured. Make sure they don't repair it sneakily last second before your soldier actually disappears inside into the yellow - then you'd have to waste another). Once you're done capturing the yard, you should receive a reinforcement of one or two trikes - at this point in time you should have plenty of troops left, plus 1-2 trikes. Attack the northwestern Ordos base, kill the guards on the way - focus fire on the quads then trikes then heavy troopers - then damage and capture the light vehicle plant. While you're fremen are crawling over to the enemy base don't forget to build and place two refineries. Don't worry about making concrete slabs for them - just plop them on the north of your base and repair when you have the money / when they get attacked. Keep producing single trooper fremen in your war academy so that they can protect the base from the mercs while you're busy chewing on the ordos base. This is what I did. My guess is that, just like me, the way I used to simply not attack enemy for the longest time which allowed him to simply keep me on the back foot with constant attacks and keep me from attacking him. It's a vicious cycle and you'd be surprised how easy it is to disrupt the enemy ai's base from attacking you if you hit it back. Recently i've began experimenting on focusing down their refineries - this seems to slow their attacks down to a crawl for a while. I do NOT recommend it here, because of how the refinery is placed on the north of ordos base. If you try to go to it you will 'waken up' more guard quads on the north side, and you want as little opposition to your attack as possible. Light Vehicle plant is on the southwestern part of the base so just sweep the south of the base and start attacking the light plant. It might take you a bit of time to get captured because they keep repairing the buildings, but the money they spend on repairs they're not spending on making troops to attack you. With trikes on your side this mission is far easier. If you find yourself struggling just place another War Academy at your base (or even at the ordos's base once your capture operation is successful). If you're struggling because of money - just build another refinery or two. It's a good investment that pays for itself very fast. Don't forget that you can use harvesters to crush mercenary's heavy troopers. Makes defending the base a little easier. Also, place fremen troopers behind your refineries - they will shoot attacking trikes across the buildings with no retaliation - repairing a building is cheap, it's a great bullet catcher. Hopefully with this essay you'll find yourself enjoying this mission as much as I did. Unfortunately, it seems that later missions are pretty much reskinned Atreides missions and not much is different (except for the stupid color scheme that makes your fremen troops harder to distinguish from mercs or harkonnen).
i think you cheat. i play this verry game, and the ai absolutely abuses repairing its units. as soon as something gets health down in the yellow zone it picks it up and takes it to the repairs. so eighter you can destroy a tank in one volley or it will be back soon.
