my grandad ran a corner shop in the 60s 70s the shop was the hub of the community and many had to get food cigs and other things on tick till pay day this song always reminds me that my grandad strived for better but at the same time he was focused on the meaning of community and playing his role in it sad that it seems to have gone these days shame
NO ONE EVER WROTE THESE WORDS! NO ONE. Nobody except Paul Fucking Weller. Damn mediocrity, war, intolerance, cruelty, and meanness. DAMN YOU. God Bless the Jam forever!
Sean Evans - Don't hold your breath mate. It would be amazing if they did get back together though. www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/848306/The-Jam-drummer-Rick-Buckler-Paul-Weller-Bruce-Foxton-The-Jam-reunion
People can point out musicians who “technically” are better than these 3, and there are much better singers than Weller that have been around but when this band played together there was an energy and passion that resonated with me as a kid. I liked other bands that tapped in to the anger of the young at the time but nobody was consistently pairing the energetic music with such socially aware lyrics like these were. By the time All Mod Cons came out these were already the best band in the world to me and they still are now. Lyrically, Weller is a genius, there’s been nobody like him for me, as a kid I thought the jam was fighting my battles for me, they hated and loved the same things I did, and now as I hurtle towards my 60’s and I put on my Jam LP’s I still think the same.
Shame Paul Weller had to kill the Jam. Could of took a break, and done his Style Council project, or incorporated those elements into the Jam. Their sound was evolving anyway so it could of worked with Rick and Bruce.
I have loved the Jam since I was 14 years old and this is one of the three best songs. But I can not understand Style Council nor Paul Wellers solo stuff. It really hurt my feelings for music.
Agreed! I was lucky to see the jam May of 1981 in NYC...the jam material was his best! Style Council was over produced stuff. His solo stuff was better but not the level of the Jam!
@@1KJO My bad! I seem to have posted a comment on the wrong page. Actually, I had seen a 'rare' The Jam live video where the song appeared to have been overdubbed over the footage. My comment doesn't apply to this footage. Sorry!
Yeah. I think it is the actual track off Sound Affects that is overdubbed over live footage. Doesn't even have the sound of a live recording. It is a great song though!
They aren't communistic. They actually describe "the American dream". And there is too much God talk to be Communistic. Sounds like a typical working class song. They should have bigger over here that's for sure.
It's just seeing world from workers everyday point of view. It's not communism It's reality, being a bit jealous to rich owners. But not many of them are that rich anyway.
The song is about class jealousy. In the end, it doesn't matter because everyone is sick of "struggling so hard". Weller is neither the man in the corner shop or the factory worker and has an outside of view and is entitled to write this song which is a commentary about class jealousy. At the end of the week, everyone goes to church and prays to the same God and puts up with their own struggles. No one is any better off than anyone else is what Weller is saying. This song resonates alot with today's workers. Would you rather work for a large corporate entity or would you rather be an entrepreneur and be your own boss, really?
Every time I think a band is the greatest, I go back to The Jam and they beat anything.
They broke my heart breaking up in their prime .
Arguably one of the very best three-piece bands ever. Such a full live sound.
Original Jam Tracks no argument there
One of?
Yes, but I am also partial to the Buzzcocks. 💕
I don't even think it's arguable.
@@michaeloberly6129
No argument here either. Still sounds bloody brilliant.
''For God created all Men equal'' brilliant line. He came up with so many in The Jam. Probably why they're still so missed and iconic.
Left us wanting more, best way to go!!
Foxton's harmonies! the best. They did so much with 3 people. They never looked bad. They never looked bad.
They were the Best! Paul Weller is a Genius!
Perhaps my fav band of all time...amazing sound with only three!
Yeah but did they ever look bad?
They had a great look. Minus Bruce's Mullet.
@@Dominic-st4gb never in a million years

Saw them in 83 in Boston. Wall of sound!
love to know what you think off them my brother was in that year we no longer talk life .
They broke up in 82
Sorry Murray. It was at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston on May 20, 1982, not 83. Thanks for the correction.
Figured that's what you meant! You're lucky you got to see them, no matter the year!

I do love this song!
So good! Come on Paul...back together mate. One day it will be too late. If not for you then do it for us. You know it makes sense.

Brilliant!,
Best of British
It's fine song.

I love you like I love my kids. please do NOT reform tho cuz it could well ruin my life
stoke bloke Believe me he even said his kids would have to be starving before he would even consider it
@stoke bloke.why wouldn't you want the best band that ever existed to reform?
Let's live with the memories, forget tomorrow,
Shame Paul Weller had to kill the Jam. Could of took a break, and done his Style Council project, or incorporated those elements into the Jam. Their sound was evolving anyway so it could of worked with Rick and Bruce.
But Rick Buckler hated the new musical direction …
Sweet son sweet
What a band. As British as f**k.
💞
👍👍🎸🎸👍👍
ROCK IS ENGLAND CALCIO E POLITICA é italia con tutti i nostri ricordi 1977 1983
THE JAM are soooooo very british.
And rightly so. They were brilliant because they were who they were.
listen to beatles revolver lp all adds up
Poetry....
Like Weller's floppy hairstyle here.
How the fuck do guitarists like Weller sound like 2 guitarist in live shows lmao, is there a hidden guitarist behind him?
Wellers nod towards Marxism. Fucking love it
WHY? ARE YOU A COMPLETE FUCKING DOILEM.

Loved the Jam but it was a time and a place gotta let it go
Great song! One of my Desert Island Discs. But this clip is just live video with overdubs added from the studio tapes, oder? Seems a bit of a con?
Did you ever see the Jam live? Have you ever seen Weller live? He is serious, was always serious, is real, and always was. No mod cons. . . .

love the energy and riffs of the jam but the communistic lyrics are too much sometimes
