- After a few requests to test Hornby stock on Hornby track, I thought I’d build a little 4’ x 3’ test layout.
And show how to fit power clips to Hornby points, run a Pacific on 1st radius curves and show how easy it is to switch from DC running to HM7000 Bluetooth DCC

'Disposable Hornby Controller', that make me laugh a lot. Nice extensive detailed look into the system and you have access to track parts that others in far away lands can only dream of. Hornby's distribution seems to be totally and utterly dysfunctional, how can you make money when you can't deliver product. I'm noticing lots of videos that show this scale at slower speeds exhibit 'lumpy running' but not in reverse!, this to me is very disappointing. And the whole venture into TT120 was always going to be a 'make or break' moment for Hornby and railway modeling. Take a look at the Hornby share price and it's sad to see the price is falling hard, it had a bull trap moment during Covid but the rug has well and truly been pulled out now. Hornby's shares are at a all time low. One wonders when the company will dissolve or be bought out. So yeah for all the years of the Disposable Hornby Controllers maybe says it all.
I’m not so sure Hornby is dead yet, only time will tell.
As for the lumpy running I do find these little motors are much smoother under DCC control.

Yup, 1200mm x 900mm or 4’x3’
It’s crazy how much you can cram on such a tiny board, not that you need to.
The black stuff is 2mm thick black neoprene rubber, you can get it in 1mm wide rolls (I bought a 2m length) it’s about the same price as cork but with much better sound deadening properties.

Just watched your latest video thumbs up too enjoyed it. But can you run a hm7000 fitted loco on a dc track not using the app to control it I have heard it can burn them out don’t know if this is right or not. Cheers thank you
I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think it’s anything to do with the track exactly, I think it’s all about the controller.
Using a DC analogue control is what Hornby initially said you could use but that’s been proved false as it cooks HM7000 chips.
What I was trying to clarify is that this circuit has one power connection at the very end with no complicated bus wiring with droppers every few feet such as is essential for traditional DCC.
This layout with its Hornby power point and fishplate connected track is as simple as it gets but Bluetooth HM7000 DCC via the App works flawlessly.
And it’s so much cheaper.
Hi Peachy, very nice layout. Just wondering, if you had bought all the track, buildings and rollingstock from hornby, what would it have cost? It would be helpful to know what kind of financial commitment I would need to make if I wanted a similar sized layout. Also where from and how much for the very nice baseboard. Thanks, Ken.

Easy question first, the baseboard was from Grainge and Hodder, and was around £80. More expensive than a board & sticks from B&Q but it’s so light and well engineered that I think it’s value for money.
Now the track & buildings, well, this lot could cost as much as £260 for the track & £260 for the buildings if… you bought them all brand new and individually from Hornby without the club discount, you’d also need to spend approx £160 on a loco and £120 on the three coaches plus power and controller, call it £850?
I however bought this whole lot of track & buildings plus almost 50% more 2nd hand “New” for under £200.
May I suggest a more cost effective way would be to buy one of the sets plus all the track packs? Even brand new that would come in at around £400 but you would likely do even better if you looked for 2nd hand offerings on eBay and Facebook.

Some say it’s possible to connect the Hornby code 80 with the Peco code 55, but only with the Hornby fishplates. I’ve not tried it myself though.

Hi Peacy. I too love all your videos. I understand where your Facebook comments are coming from but I too went the PECO route after seeing the early reviews of Hornby's TT:120 "system" (I use PECO Code 55 for my N gauge layout). I think there are plenty of other reviews using Hornby's track and this ought to satisfy them. DC->DCC: I don't have a DCCConcepts "box" (and wouldn't buy one specifically to convert to DCC), but I do have a Bachmann DCC EZ-Command controller. Should I connect the Bachmann controller to my TT:120 track to work with my HM7000 Bluetooth decoders and, if so, what power setting should I use (possibly the lowest as DCC controllers supply a steady 16V to the track)?
No absolutely not. You must not connect your controller. For Bluetooth DCC hm7000 decoders you just need a quality power supply. Mine is running at 18v.
For some reason when a controller has been used the decoders have been brewing up.

Another helpful vid Peach. 👌 What I would really really like you to do is a vid on ABC detection.
I use an iPad and I know the HM7000 has abc built in and I know you can adjust the CV’s. I know you have to have plastic fishplates and some sort of electric gadget and one rails live.
But that’s about it.
If you could do one incorporating the dapol semaphore signals as well. That would be the icing on the cake 😁

Hello Dave, I just used Hornby's regular 10mm pins, they describe them as 00 but I had no problem using them.
