I truly appreciate videos like this. I'm going through welding school right now and learning how to repair mistakes like this I think are absolutely necessary to know how to do. Thank you for showing this and others.
This dude is fun as hell to watch. Hard to teach real world in a shop. Ive seen him start a weld and walk himself around the pipe to the other side mainaining a perfect weld without breaking the arc.. thats experience for ya
I’m tryna figure out how in the hell I’ve never heard of this guy before. I enjoy watching these old hands give us young guns pointers when our journeymen won’t. I’m finishing my third year of school up here in Alberta, and have everything I need to rig up besides a truck and a deck. These videos are an inspiration for sure! Chris’ definitely up there now with the other guys I look up to (Weld professor, Nathan Montes, Austin Ross, and Jacob Schofield). Keep on keeping on my brother 💪
There are a lot of welding Channels out there but this Channel I really learn things that are really useful Thank you for all you do for us trying to learn.
@@TaylorWelding The only sad part is how its such a rare thing to find these days. Good help that works hard, does their job right, and has a good attitude.
Going through welding school now and the 5 to 7 o'clock position has been the most trouble for me. I will be trying what you just showed on my next blowout, which will probably be on Monday. Keep the advice coming!
@@TaylorWelding My problem starts with the root. I am pretty sure its just my rod angle I have to correct there and maybe move a little faster. For some reason I tend to want to slow down at the bottom. We are also welding uphill vs downhill. I also have issues with the cap in the same locations. This is the first welding I have ever done so I guess I just need to figure out what works for me.
@@stephenleonard6995 that’s right just keep on practicing bud. Try to keep your hand in front of the rod little bit. Like the rod angled back. I don’t know if I’m making sense it’s hard to text somebody how to weld
I was told by an old timer that when I got into tig Welding, I was going to have a hard time stick welding. Went about 6 years strictly tig welding, pick up a stick rod and forgot pretty everything I was taught. Took me a full day to get back into the groove of thinks
That was a great view of the trouble spot from Inside the pipe as you welded & talked thru the blowout! Great perspective for the student to see. You fixed that boo boo with confidence! Thank you for teaching. That will help new welders! Peace & prosperity to you, Sir!
were not used to grinding holes in pipe!!! your to funny ,awesome videos as always ,i have smiled a few times /and had a good chuckle, your videos are really inspiring and give excellent how tos ,i am also a pre internet blue collar worker= always have been, ,i am learning lots of tricks and great pointers that can help me become a better welder/thats the goal right? /being as i have never been to a welding school or been in the oil/gas field but have had to learn hands on and i could tell your to the point about your topics, only someone who has welded for years would know and agree i have a shop at home and do custom welding but every day is different and some days most days your welds are perfect and some days seem like you cant weld for sh*t but i started with stick and added mig about 5 years ago,,,game changer! keep up the great work
Excellent video, New subscriber, I'm more or less retired by now but your advice is gold, I sure could have used advice like that when I started out lol , thanks form every one that this helps.
Thanks Brother I really appreciate the comment. I love getting these comments from guys Who have been around the block. When I make these videos I try to think about the stuff I wish I would’ve known in the beginning. That would’ve helped me. Glad you like it thanks again
Great tip!! I learn so much from you brother. Keep it up! I'm going to get with you soon on what rods I should buy and how to store them so they dont go bad. Cant remember if you did a video on that yet. Stack gold, silver, ammo, and welding rods. LOL
When I apprenticed my bother I told him it is all right to screw up but it is not alright to not be able to fix it . Burn throughs on heavy pipe are easy to fix light wall pipe can be a night mare
What size ammo cans are thoes rod holders on your truck? Cool vids, my daughters and I appreciate your videos. They are learning to weld comms towers, but they will be trying some pipe with let's soon. I'll try and put it on my channel. Today they try some aluminum tig to fix a forklift transmission case.
When these pipes are put into service; are they cleaned up inside? What happens to all the slag and weld bee bees? Are they filtered out at the oil/gas processing plant?
Now, I'm in metal shop in highschool, advanced metals, and when arc welding (I think that's what he's doing) I thought the rod was too hot to touch? As he does at 1:04 to steady it, kinda. Is it not?
Good instruction. In a future video, please tell us about your Vantage 300. I’ve always kinda’ wanted one but for what I do, the Ranger 305G makes more sense. I’ve had two of them and my older one is only “Semi” retired with over 7400 hours on it! I still use it in the shop regularly and on the rare occasion that I want a machine on the ground or in the building I’m working on. I just noticed your Vantage because, from what I understand, most pipe hands lean toward the SAE’s and Classic’s. Just curious about your take on the Vantage in a pipe welding setting. By the way, I’m a self-employed rig welder/fabricator that works on everything but more agricultural based with a fair amount of trucks and heavy equipment thrown in the mix.
I have a vantage 300,400 and a 305EFI. And after ew older 200 and a classic 2. Out of all those machines my favorites are the classic 2 and the 305EFI. The ranger welds identical to the vantage cause they use the same control boards. Only time I use the 400 is for heavy fab when I need to burn 1/4" 7018 for days on end. Can you guess which one I use the most? The 305EFI. And I'm a pipe guy mainly that dabbles in structural and heavy equipment repair
Hey Chris I’m not sure of the best way to message you but I’m having a time trying to pass d 1104 with my vantage. Was wondering what kindof Amps you were putting a hot fill in with 5/32 on standard wall 8”? I keep blowing massive holes in my bead on the bottom 1/3. Thanks a lot sir your info/channel is awesome!
Most of the time that comes from holding the grinding wheel straight at the bottom. You cut out a U shape. What you want is a V shape .And then stay off the middle and keep the digging part of the rod on the sides. Also if you are using rods smaller than 3/16 try a # 9 lens.I used one for 40 years and it did not hurt my eyes.Keep that lens clean.
There also a way that u can just float a weld on the walls until u get it to a gap u want like a 1/16-3/32 and then grind that weld down and just push on the gap u made it should come out real good , now xray and everything I have heared it will pass I have done it but I’m still practicing.
Hey I saw another video of yours, and you had a few of the older style stingers for sale. Do you have any left? Also I happened to follow your Link to a rumble discussion, and we seem to be on the same page. I live in California, and we're homeschooling because of the current state of affairs. My kids haven't had any vaccines and we believe in God given gender.
"Stubby Rod Saver" is the name of it. They're out of production. I found a similar ESAB stinger-but ESAB says they don't make them any more. Some are for sale out of Ukraine though. I bought a second one for my other machine. There's another company making one similar but the name escapes me. I've done extensive searching. The ESAB unit isn't as well built as the Stubby-but it's a fairly solid.

When you do the repasses do you hang to one side of it and then the other or do you just go straight down the middle?
When it’s big you’ll have to go to one side or the other. If it’s not too big you can go straight down the middle
Is this just dragging or whipping. I usually whip it in and try to fill in a single pass.
I would call it cramming & stepping
Maybe soking

Just keep on welding it will close up and look just fine as long as you push on it
When you repaired the hole were you dragging the rod ? Or were you whipping
Drag / push / step/ Whatever it takes really. Main thing is try not to put too much in at one time
@@TaylorWelding got it , thanks for the feedback ! Where are ya working nowadays ?
Louisiana
On blow outs use 3/32 6011 on reverse polarity, you can almost weld on air with it, good for blowouts and thin thin metal.
Most pipe procedures that's a no no and will get you fired
Thats a easy trip to the bus stop with pipeline company's!
Great video, as usual. My comment is I would like to see a video on your pancake helmet set up.

Also lay another welding rod with Flux and all across hole and weld over it
I would of got a cone and transitioned that line on the tee. Sometimes X-ray will say there’s a shadow if they don’t know what they are looking at.
I've had that happen before too. I've had more repairs from people not knowing what they're looking at than from anything else
