Hey folks. I live on a homestead 40 miles from this guy.. Thinking you want to and actually having the skill to live off grid are two entirely different things. It isn't easy. A work ethic that is severely lost in America today is priority 1. Most Americans living in metropolises like Vegas DO NOT HAVE THE SKILLS.
You speak the truth! Whenever I am sitting with someone in my office that wants to live off grid, I make sure they really know what that means. Water hauling is only the tip of the ice burg. However, people can adapt. They have been for centuries.
I believe the majority of people who want to live off grid prefer working hard for themselves over having their lifeblood drained by lazy leeches in a socialist city. The the people who want to go off grid are already the hardest working people in the cities, so all they need is to adapt to the new skill set.

Just stumbled on your channel. Interesting info...i noticed it was posted 3 months ago. Water has gone up, it's now 4 to 4.5 cents a gal up here in Valle. Also don't forget the gas it takes to get it. We can have it delivered by only one company because our roads are total mud holes. That company currently charges $0.10 per gal. YEAH! I did some water well drilling up in Snowflake for a time and we were getting water for a penny per gallon for our mud pump. Crazy how cheap water SHOULD be! But it is what it is and we do what we must :-)

Why so many people wonder why most households our way own big trucks! Seen one impressive and dangerous haul, small Tacoma with a cube.. keeping it slow is key, for those that truly want to haul more, tongue weight comes into play, dual axles can be key, and if you "have" to get up to speed, brakes on the trailer itself. Thanks for sharing this info with the world, most people don't realize the oddity we must wrangle in northern AZ. As for rainwater catchment, if it's a shingle roof? Firefighting water is all it is. Metal roofs seem to be key, and a filter system.
Living up here is a blessing, but it comes with some "oddities" as you said. On the note of rainwater catchment, agree with you 100% I wouldn't consider drinking rainwater from a catchment system unless is was filtered. I do, however, have no problem giving my chickens rain water from my catchment system.
I looked into having water hauled in but there are very few companies and no fill stations. Haulers quoted 30 cents per gallon. Northern Arizona is very different.
@ Jake Just so you know, 400 gal of water @ 8.3 lbs per gal is 3,320 in water weight. Totes are 130lbs+ each (if you disagree, look it up, I did). 3320+270=3,590lbs, already exceeding your trailer weight capacity. Now you have to add the weight of the trailer. Trailers weight limits are determined by their axle, you have a 3,500lb axle, which means that axle has to hold the weight of the trailer plus its contents. In other words, you would need to drop the loaded trailer on a scale and it can't weigh more than 3,500lbs. I'm not sure what your empty trailer weighs but whatever that is, plus 90 more lbs is how much overweight your trailer is. I'm definitely not judging you as we here have a double axle ( 2 3,500lb rated axles pulled with a big ass Cummins) and we drive down a pretty rough road VERY VERY SLOWLY IN 4X4 LOW so it just crawls along at like 2-3 mph or something ridiculous when loaded. We have a 7,000lb limit and haul 10,500lbs in just water weight and totes, not including the trailer weight itself (no idea really but guessing 1,500-2k). We are definitely pushing well beyond limits so again I ain't judging you at all, and if it works (it does cuz you did it) then no worries, just be aware brother that you are super overweight. Btw, our well is within our community, we only drive this overloaded way on dirt roads 100% from water well to our storage tanks, prolly 3-4 miles. My bro deals with the water so I'm not exactly sure how far and such, but it ain't to far. Takes him bout 1-1.5hrs to drive off and get back.
Thanks for the fact check and the additional math. I am aware that I go over my max weight by a couple hundred pounds. To the best of my knowledge, the reason that we have maximum weight is to verify that the vehicle that's Towing the load can successfully break to a stop. I have verified that my Suburban can break to a stop while hauling my water. I am still being safe, despite the fact that the math is against me
@@JakeAZagent Weight limits and tow ratings are two different and separate things. Yes that is the vehicle tow rating and it is saying that vehicle can safely only tow 3,500 lbs, 10% of which should be tongue weight for any trailer. You can have a 7,000lb rated trailer but as long as the combined trailer + it's load is at 3,500 or less, the 3,500 tow rating vehicle can safely tow it and stop. The 3,500 trailer weight limit has nothing to do with the vehicle towing it and is determined by the axle the trailer sits on. It doesn't care if a Toyota 4runner or a ford f350 diesel truck is pulling it, a trailer itself can be safely pulled as long as the load doesn't exceed trailer weight limits, and the vehicle can safely tow it as long as tow ratings are respected. Here we completely ignore all them ratings and just go with it. I just wanted you to be aware is all. I'll wave to you if I see you, we're in the same neck of the woods... juniper woods ranch community just south of ashfork.
Mechanic here. In America, towing capacaties are grossly understated. If you look at a car sold both in the US and Europe, it will usually have about 2k lbs more towing capacity in Europe for the same drivetrain. There's a few reasons for this. In America, we have higher speed limits, so if you keep things under 55 mph, you should be fine. We have fewer, or sometimes no vehicle saftey inspections, whereas in Europe they're very strict about it. So as long as you keep up with the standard maintenance and inspect the car yourself for saftey defects, it should be fine as well. We also love to file lawsuits here, while in Europe it's very rare, so the manufacturers need to cover their backsides in the US with a lower towing capacity to avoid potential lawsuits. The basic gist of it is, the vehicle's engine, transmission, and brakes should be more than capable of towing a bit over the rated capacity.
I would never buy property that doesnt have an ample water supply. I have 240 acres, two good springs and two good wells. I pump water into tanks up on a mountain so the property has gravity fed water pressure. My tank capacity is roughly 28,000 gallons. Unlike most people where I am, I have planted thousands of trees, I have an orchard, large greenhouses and many raised bed gardens. I have learned the hard way that water is the most important part of picking a piece of property. You cant truck water in cheap enough to make it feasible on a large scale, even using my own equipment.
Stupidity, when the San Pedro river basin has water, at like 20 feet. I love the idea of pumping 1,000 gallons per minute. Two irrigation wells and one domestic well here on my little 55 acre farm, near Dudlleyville. I sold 240,000 a day at .005 a half cent per gallon. I was making $1,000 a day. Get a bigger trailer, two axle.
Ive been homesteading about 45 miles from you for about 5 years. I havnt hauled a drop of water in all this time. In northern AZ, the key is rain catchment Arizona unplugged on youtube. Ps great vid
so you would need about 4,000 sq ft of the roof or whatever as a rain catchment to offset having to get water externally, with average rain of 12 inches a year.
There would be some serious math involved there which sounds fun to do; however, I personally, would not have my family drink or bath in roof caught water. Once the water touches the roof, it's no longer potable in my opinion. I would rather pay the $15 and spend 45 minutes each week to assure health in my home. But for animals and gardening, watch catchment works so well up here!

I pull two 275 gal UBCs ( universal bulk containers / or tanks) and one 375 gal. Around 8000 lb of water. You must haul when its dry if you live off pavement orherwise you wont get it home. Been doing this for 16 yrs.
For anyone wondering, if you keep any kind of livestock ....400 gallons might get you 3 days. We haul and get delivered. We average 5k gal per month with cows goats and dogs. 400 gallons a week is not the average family usage.
I would definitely agree! Having animals changes everything! We have 15 chickens at home, but I have a rain catchment system setup that fills a 1,000 gallon cistern. That suffices for my poultry and gardening.
@@JakeAZagent your not doing much gardening then that's 4 sure. I grew about a 4x4 sq ft hobby garden when I was hauling water. I know neighbors who spend either ALL available resources on either hauling water or delivery. Water = Life You can just barley manage to get by hauling water but you will Never thrive. It's just not possible.

@@JakeAZagent I would keep it above ground and cover it with clay dirt because the water pump dose not have to work as hard. However if freezing is a issue, yes below ground.
If you have to haul water you are already in an unsustainable situation, the price of that water given the massive drought conditions is going up, the other issue is supply, of which their is no guarantee, people should be very clear on the water situation before they buy land, or a home in such a community, getting in may be easy, getting out may be very hard, with any value.
Interesting point of view Mike. When doomsday comes, I'm pretty sure we will all be screwed anyway. For now, I'll enjoy my easily accessible water situation. But here's some food for thought. All of our drinking water comes from the Earth in some way. The water company gets its supply from the Earth. When a drought comes along, my little area here won't be the only place affected. If aquifers dry up, then water companies run out too. If God says no more water, then it wo t matter where you are nor how you get your water. There just won't be any. Ewc has a report describing the contaminants … even though this water has passed federal regs… it can still contain contaminants and pass… go to environmental working group website
Consider using bladders for transporting water… there’s some 265 gallon bladders and slightly smaller for 100 bucks or less on Amazon right now. You could put those in back of a truck or suv… won’t get as much all at once… but if you don’t have access to ibc or trailer etc… it’s good to know options … I’m planning on acquiring an suv w tow capacity and would like a trailer… but I may not get a trailer right away… plan to rent a U-Haul trailer if I need one… and I’m planning to set up rain water catchment, but will need to haul water in the beginning or from time to time. The bladder is easier to handle and you can fold it up and put it away when you are done.
Cool suit notwithstanding, you may want to consider strapping down those totes. One good brake test and you'll have 5000 lbs worth of water in your back seat!
I have a solar powered well with a 2600 gallon tank, every now and then I check for algae, haven't noticed anything in the last two years since the well was installed. Big tanks are green or black and don't allow any sunshine in, therefore no allergy
I’m east of him and from the East Coast. To me the life is better but it’s not easy. My children definitely love this life better than city life. We fill up our tanks for cheaper and just a county over that’s crazy.

This is amazing … however… a person doesn’t have to have a trailer with Ibc totes… one can lay a 265 gallon bladder in the back of a truck or suv…. Transport that way… then the bladder can be folded up and tucked away. It’s likely that a 265 gallon would fit in there… but, they can be smaller… yeah, you are now hauling more water than that all at once… but, this message is for other situations.

The short answer is yes. Up here in Williams, drilling a well is nearly impossible because the water table is 3,000 feet below the surface. That is why we haul water. To build a house, the county will require you to put in a septic system. Other than that, you are allowed to build what ever you want (within reason) and plan to store water in a cistern so you have water at your home. I recommend calling Coconino County with any and all questions regarding their rules.
Sure the water was $14. You did not include $ for fuel spent picking up/delivering. That is a real expense required living off grid. Although perhaps the water excursion can be combined with another necessary excursion IF the destinations are central location. What is the quality of the water? Does it require excellent/specific filtration? Something to consider!
We can play the IF game all day long. But in this day and age, you have access to the internet which houses maps, gas prices, and MPG calculators. I think you could plug and chug a little to find out how much YOU would spend in gas to drive from your off grid location to Bearizona and back. Let me be honest, I am a Realtor and a UA-camr. Can't you get another short hose a female cam lock on each end to connect your 2 totes together so that you are filling one it automatically fills the second way at same time, and the same would happen as you drain them into your tank at home? By he way just found your channel and subbed.
I think I could do that, you are correct. However, in an effort to prevent adding more valves and connections that can leak at some point, I currently don't mind just doing it all twice. Good suggestion though, especially for anyone out there with 2+ totes!
I did not. In this day and age, I do not find calculating fuel to be essential because we drive so much, that we are going to fuel up anyway. Congrats tho on your 180 pounds deal! I'd appreciate a similar deal
Working hard is fine but what about when it's snowing, the roads are full of mud or you are sick. Or your car breaks down or maybe no gas? There is real joy in knowing you do not have to leave your place. For a very long time. Best of luck to you..
That is why we have LARGE cisterns out here. I can fill my cistern to 2200 gallons which will last my family 5 weeks. Our weather out here is never bad enough to keep us from leaving the house for longer than 6 days. Hauling water is what we have to do to live. When life changes and things get hard, then we will adapt. But this process is easy and doable for the foreseeable future

It definitely doesn't include gas costs. Traveling by car nowadays is so common that I never factor that cost in. It's just part of our everyday life. Hopefully gas prices never again get as high as they did in 2022! Be blessed!
I haven't had any problems yet. It was once disclosed to me that the ratings on vehicles and trailers are set much lower than their actual failure rate. Those ratings can be seen as a CYA tactic from the manufactures. Thus, their A's are covered and my A is safe driving down the road with my current setup.
@@JakeAZagent you didn't say but re-examining your tanks they look like they're 375 gallons? That would weigh 6000 pounds if they were full. By the way, I see that same exact setup every day in St. John's at the water station, so you're not alone in your methods
@@JakeAZagent "flying off" driving down the road isn't the only issue. Your load must be secured and stay secured during an accident also. Do a little research of the laws on load securement. You will then figure out what I mean about large fines. I have handed out a few of those overpriced awards.
@@JakeAZagent Jake I'm glad for many of my new neighbors but recently had a really negative encounter with one who didn't want to be responsible for their animals but thought they could just let them roam free. I'm getting over it, there are folks like that everywhere. But prior to the mass exodus of city folks to the desert it was a lot more peaceful where I live. Change is happening for sure whether I approve or not. On the other hand I've met others who have brought some positive influence to our area. So not all are ill mannered and inconsiderate. I too have made mistakes and thought of myself more than how my actions could affect those around me. So I must give others a pass when they behave as I know I myself have in the past. It's just hard getting use to so many people moving in all around us where the only sounds use to be the wind blowing through the trees and the doves cooing. Now there are loud generators and cars racing up the road to the bus stop twice a day. Hey but that's life, things do change. I don't have to embrace it all with gusto. But I can look for the silver lining in the storm clouds.
I appreciate your concern; however as you saw in the video, I calculated my max load and I adhere pretty close to it. I do not fill the totes up completely, only to the 200 gallon marks on each. In doing this, I have not had any problems hauling water for three years now. I hope we all can show concern for others and make each other aware of the important things in this world. To the OP, you have a bit to learn. hanging that weight behind the axle rather than centering it over the axles on that trailer is where you get a "wag the tail" ride with the trailer. Also, while it may not be technically rated fit it as you like to say....lmao....its not all that uncommon that I load a 16ft flatbed with 4-5 super sacks of feed for the cattle. You do the math. Super sacks weight 2000lbs x 4-5 sacks = 8000 - 10,000 lbs. And that is pulled behind a modified 2000 Ford Ranger. (Trailer has brakes / Ranger has a brake controller). Nothing unsafe about it as long as you follow the rule of driving the road 75-100 yards ahead of you. Have done it for decades.
I believe you are correct; however stopping the vehicle with anything over 4,500 lbs feels scary sometimes. I'll play it safe and stick to under 4K. Be blessed!
@@JakeAZagent I forgot to mention you need a class A hitch rated for 1000 pounds of tong weight. Pulling a 10000 pound trailer with a smaller hitch would be disastrous
I am in the high desert. we have temps ranging from 30 - 60 in a 24 hour span. Then maybe 60-90 during the summer time. these suits work well and look great!
My day job is being at home with my family. I get to be home because I chose to different, stand out, and make something of myself. I advise you to STAY at your day job, FOREVER

Over here in Concho Arizona, you can have 1000 gallons delivered to your home for 50 or $75, and the water costs one one penny a gallon at the station

Mechanic here. In America, towing capacaties are grossly understated. If you look at a car sold both in the US and Europe, it will usually have about 2k lbs more towing capacity in Europe for the same drivetrain. There's a few reasons for this. In America, we have higher speed limits, so if you keep things under 55 mph, you should be fine. We have fewer, or sometimes no vehicle saftey inspections, whereas in Europe they're very strict about it. So as long as you keep up with the standard maintenance and inspect the car yourself for saftey defects, it should be fine as well. We also love to file lawsuits here, while in Europe it's very rare, so the manufacturers need to cover their backsides in the US with a lower towing capacity to avoid potential lawsuits. The basic gist of it is, the vehicle's engine, transmission, and brakes should be more than capable of towing a bit over the rated capacity.
I would never buy property that doesnt have an ample water supply. I have 240 acres, two good springs and two good wells. I pump water into tanks up on a mountain so the property has gravity fed water pressure. My tank capacity is roughly 28,000 gallons. Unlike most people where I am, I have planted thousands of trees, I have an orchard, large greenhouses and many raised bed gardens. I have learned the hard way that water is the most important part of picking a piece of property. You cant truck water in cheap enough to make it feasible on a large scale, even using my own equipment.

Stupidity, when the San Pedro river basin has water, at like 20 feet. I love the idea of pumping 1,000 gallons per minute. Two irrigation wells and one domestic well here on my little 55 acre farm, near Dudlleyville. I sold 240,000 a day at .005 a half cent per gallon. I was making $1,000 a day. Get a bigger trailer, two axle.

That is awesome! Congrats! We catch rain water here, but we only use it for gardening and chickens!
so you would need about 4,000 sq ft of the roof or whatever as a rain catchment to offset having to get water externally, with average rain of 12 inches a year.
There would be some serious math involved there which sounds fun to do; however, I personally, would not have my family drink or bath in roof caught water. Once the water touches the roof, it's no longer potable in my opinion. I would rather pay the $15 and spend 45 minutes each week to assure health in my home. But for animals and gardening, watch catchment works so well up here!

You must haul when its dry if you live off pavement orherwise you wont get it home.

For anyone wondering, if you keep any kind of livestock ....400 gallons might get you 3 days. We haul and get delivered. We average 5k gal per month with cows goats and dogs. 400 gallons a week is not the average family usage.
I would definitely agree! Having animals changes everything! We have 15 chickens at home, but I have a rain catchment system setup that fills a 1,000 gallon cistern. That suffices for my poultry and gardening.

You can just barley manage to get by hauling water but you will Never thrive. It's just not possible.

Water totes do not typically just fly off trailers at 65 mph. They safely rest as long as their bottom surface is in complete contact with the trailer
If you have to haul water you are already in an unsustainable situation, the price of that water given the massive drought conditions is going up, the other issue is supply, of which their is no guarantee, people should be very clear on the water situation before they buy land, or a home in such a community, getting in may be easy, getting out may be very hard, with any value.
Interesting point of view Mike. When doomsday comes, I'm pretty sure we will all be screwed anyway. For now, I'll enjoy my easily accessible water situation.
But here's some food for thought. All of our drinking water comes from the Earth in some way. The water company gets its supply from the Earth. When a drought comes along, my little area here won't be the only place affected. If aquifers dry up, then water companies run out too. If God says no more water, then it wo t matter where you are nor how you get your water. There just won't be any.
So say your prayers, thank God for this life, and choose the right. Let's not upset He who gives us life, eh?

Ewc has a report describing the contaminants … even though this water has passed federal regs… it can still contain contaminants and pass… go to environmental working group website

Consider using bladders for transporting water… there’s some 265 gallon bladders and slightly smaller for 100 bucks or less on Amazon right now. You could put those in back of a truck or suv… won’t get as much all at once… but if you don’t have access to ibc or trailer etc… it’s good to know options … I’m planning on acquiring an suv w tow capacity and would like a trailer… but I may not get a trailer right away… plan to rent a U-Haul trailer if I need one… and I’m planning to set up rain water catchment, but will need to haul water in the beginning or from time to time. The bladder is easier to handle and you can fold it up and put it away when you are done.

BLEACH! Add 1/4 cup of bleach per 200 gallons of water. Works like a charm
I have a solar powered well with a 2600 gallon tank, every now and then I check for algae, haven't noticed anything in the last two years since the well was installed. Big tanks are green or black and don't allow any sunshine in, therefore no allergy
Most people don't know you can't use the clear or white tanks... sunlight gets through which allows algae to form.

This is amazing … however… a person doesn’t have to have a trailer with Ibc totes… one can lay a 265 gallon bladder in the back of a truck or suv…. Transport that way… then the bladder can be folded up and tucked away. It’s likely that a 265 gallon would fit in there… but, they can be smaller… yeah, you are now hauling more water than that all at once… but, this message is for other situations.
Also do you have some cheap land out there?

Are you allowed to build a house without a well?
The short answer is yes.
Up here in Williams, drilling a well is nearly impossible because the water table is 3,000 feet below the surface.
That is why we haul water.
To build a house, the county will require you to put in a septic system. Other than that, you are allowed to build what ever you want (within reason) and plan to store water in a cistern so you have water at your home.
I recommend calling Coconino County with any and all questions regarding their rules.
Sure the water was $14. You did not include $ for fuel spent picking up/delivering. That is a real expense required living off grid. Although perhaps the water excursion can be combined with another necessary excursion IF the destinations are central location.
What is the quality of the water? Does it require excellent/specific filtration?

We can play the IF game all day long. But in this day and age, you have access to the internet which houses maps, gas prices, and MPG calculators. I think you could plug and chug a little to find out how much YOU would spend in gas to drive from your off grid location to Bearizona and back.

Can't you get another short hose a female cam lock on each end to connect your 2 totes together so that you are filling one it automatically fills the second way at same time, and the same would happen as you drain them into your tank at home? By he way just found your channel and subbed.
I think I could do that, you are correct. However, in an effort to prevent adding more valves and connections that can leak at some point, I currently don't mind just doing it all twice.
Good suggestion though, especially for anyone out there with 2+ totes!

I did not. In this day and age, I do not find calculating fuel to be essential because we drive so much, that we are going to fuel up anyway.

Working hard is fine but what about when it's snowing, the roads are full of mud or you are sick. Or your car breaks down or maybe no gas? There is real joy in knowing you do not have to leave your place. For a very long time. Best of luck to you..
That is why we have LARGE cisterns out here. I can fill my cistern to 2200 gallons which will last my family 5 weeks. Our weather out here is never bad enough to keep us from leaving the house for longer than 6 days.
Hauling water is what we have to do to live. When life changes and things get hard, then we will adapt. But this process is easy and doable for the foreseeable future

I'm pretty sure that you also need to include the weight of the trailer in your towing capacity. So you might be over.
I am pretty sure you are correct. However, I have since purchased a bigger vehicle with a 7,000 towing capacity. So it really isn't a problem anymore.

It definitely doesn't include gas costs.
Traveling by car nowadays is so common that I never factor that cost in. It's just part of our everyday life.

I haven't had any problems yet. It was once disclosed to me that the ratings on vehicles and trailers are set much lower than their actual failure rate.
Those ratings can be seen as a CYA tactic from the manufactures.
Thus, their A's are covered and my A is safe driving down the road with my current setup.

Why isn't the load strapped down? Strap it down before someone gets hurt or it costs a lot more in fines than the savings by hauling it yourself.

@@JakeAZagent "flying off" driving down the road isn't the only issue. Your load must be secured and stay secured during an accident also. Do a little research of the laws on load securement. You will then figure out what I mean about large fines. I have handed out a few of those overpriced awards.

I'm getting over it, there are folks like that everywhere. But prior to the mass exodus of city folks to the desert it was a lot more peaceful where I live.
Change is happening for sure whether I approve or not. On the other hand I've met others who have brought some positive influence to our area.
So not all are ill mannered and inconsiderate. I too have made mistakes and thought of myself more than how my actions could affect those around me. So I must give others a pass when they behave as I know I myself have in the past.
It's just hard getting use to so many people moving in all around us where the only sounds use to be the wind blowing through the trees and the doves cooing. Now there are loud generators and cars racing up the road to the bus stop twice a day. Hey but that's life, things do change. I don't have to embrace it all with gusto. But I can look for the silver lining in the storm clouds.

I appreciate your concern; however as you saw in the video, I calculated my max load and I adhere pretty close to it. I do not fill the totes up completely, only to the 200 gallon marks on each. In doing this, I have not had any problems hauling water for three years now.
I hope we all can show concern for others and make each other aware of the important things in this world. Lives can be saved by doing so!

To the OP, you have a bit to learn. hanging that weight behind the axle rather than centering it over the axles on that trailer is where you get a "wag the tail" ride with the trailer. Also, while it may not be technically rated fit it as you like to say....lmao....its not all that uncommon that I load a 16ft flatbed with 4-5 super sacks of feed for the cattle. You do the math. Super sacks weight 2000lbs x 4-5 sacks = 8000 - 10,000 lbs. And that is pulled behind a modified 2000 Ford Ranger. (Trailer has brakes / Ranger has a brake controller). Nothing unsafe about it as long as you follow the rule of driving the road 75-100 yards ahead of you. Have done it for decades.

I believe you are correct; however stopping the vehicle with anything over 4,500 lbs feels scary sometimes.
