Precious babies. I've handled Opossums for 34 years. I enjoy educating people about them. I've changed a lot of perspectives and opinions about them. Love this video! 🥰❤

    Very healthy looking.
Love opossums. Their Eye sight isn't great.
I would love other people to help and have more respect for opossums/wildlife.

Me too. Many folks fail to see animals as worth caring for. I don't think animals deserve RIGHTS per se, but animal welfare is our priority with all of our, be they pets, rehab animals, or even animals we are raising for eating later on...all life deserves love and dignity and we do our best to show them all how much we care for and appreciate them.

This is so awesome! I found a horribly injured female opossum in my yard that had been attacked by a dog or coyote or something. Lost an eye and had lots of puncture wounds and face wounds and a hurt leg. I'm not a licensed rehabber and the closest one to me is over an hour away and when I looked at their web site they just have crates and crates of opossums stacked up - just looked so crowded and sad. I have a lfair amount of animal experience with farm animals and a good friend who is a vet who agreed to help on the down low. Here is the wildest part of the story....when my vet friend was examining her he discovered that she had 9 (NINE!!!) babies in her pouch about the size of jelly beans (bald and blind but alive and well in spite of mom's attack and injuries). We got her on antibiotics and pain meds and he gave stitches in a couple places THat was around 2 months ago. Mom has now recovered about 85% and doing amazingly well!! The babies still take her milk and take turns going in her pouch but mostly they come out and explore the cage (5 x 4 so not one of those little carrying cages the other rehabber uses!). Its been the joy of my life raising all these. Mom is the greatest animal of all time. First 2 days she would his and snap at me (she was a wild animal, after all). today she is loving and gentle beyond belief. I set her on the couch on a towel and she will lay there and nudge me to get me to rub her belly. She will crawl in my lap if she is in the mood (often) and its just incredible. I will be releasing all of them soon and just hope she will stick around. I live in the country on several acres so I hope they stick around. I love this video because I sometimes buy mine crickets at bait shops and its so fun dumping them like you did and watching the babies (about the size of a small kitten) go crazy. They usually move pretty slow but when the crickets go in, they move FAST! OK, sorry for the longest post in UA-cam history but I can't tell most people about this so its fun to share with people who get it..

Don't apologize, the whole reason I'm on here is because my family feels the same way about animals and wanted to share that with similar people. It's always nice hearing from other folks willing to take time and energy from their already difficult lives to help a creature that might never even understand we are trying to help them! You should be proud, and it might be worth looking into getting a rehab license - you don't need to be able to take in a lot of animals (we just converted a spare room we had towards storing our supplies along with a few cages), every bit helps and it's a good way to meet lots of some of the kindest people.

I am in Ontario and 2 opossum walked into my house early September. The sleep in drawers, on my chairs and closets. Both were app 6 weeks old and I am feeding them. They would never have survived a Canadian winter weighing only 250 grams. They are huge now, 3kilo each and healthy. They will be released mid April. I am not licensed and its illegal here to keep them as pets. I can't take them to a vet either. I don't like the rehabbers in Ontario.

You're not alone in that thinking. I hope you feed them extremely high Calcium food. Like chicken bones eggs with shells crushed up in them and low fat plain yogurt. Twice as much Calcium as meat. Chewy carries an Opossum "complete'' dry food and it's not real expensive. Good luck to you.

@@benjamincresswell3713 They very likely fell off their mother's back and momma opi continued walking through yards.
Recently a licensed rescue had 94 raccoons taken by the MNRF. All were euthanized. I don't trust the rehabbers to do the right thing. My guys grew big eating yoghurt, eggs with shell crushed with a blender, EPILAC, chicken, dog food, kale and broccoli. They like variety. Once in a while mealworms (gross) and live mice I trap in my backyard.

We don't get along well with a lot of the other rehabbers in our area either. Lots of pseudoscience and magical thinking among them, one lady literally came in discussing homeopathy for animals in distress and my partner and son just rolled their eyes. Working with animals you meet all sorts of people for sure.

Thanks for checking out my vid! Piper is my best buddy and has been raised among lots of different animals, so she understands friend and foe very well. You should see her when she hears or sees foxes and coyotes though, then her protective side comes out!
