Nice vid. This is something i’ve been interested in for a while. The original era punk rock bands of the 80s have a slightly different style than the 90s bands. Their sound takes a lot of inspiration from Rock n Roll, Rockabilly and Surf music. If you take Chuck Berry style licks, play them louder, harder and with a more aggressive gain setting you’ve got a solid baseline for a punk rock solo. Play full bar-chords all down strokes and you’ve got that Ramones sound. Obviously there is more to it than that but I think thats a starting point

Another great video! Although to be fair, a few of these techniques are really kinda universal guitar things you should know for playing any genre (like bar chords, hammer ons and pull offs, and palm muting).
What really messes me up with playing punk songs is down strumming. I know I should just practice it more, it just murders my wrist. I can do it but it's unpleasant. It's deceptively challenging in my opinion. But it might just be a personal thing since I've had chronic pain in my right wrist since I was like 7 (so like since 16 years ago).
Now if only i could master that strumming pattern Eric Melvin uses a lot of, I've never sat down and tried to play it but I feel like it really gives nofx songs their characteristic feel. Ya know. Might be cool if you did a video on punk rhythm guitar riffs or something like that, rhythm guitarists are underrated universally especially in punk cause they really make the genre what it is. Just an idea.

The best thing to take away here is Downstroking, Powerchords, and Tremolo. That right there is how you bridge all genres of punk rock and hardcore punk. You won't find alternate picking (unless the tempo is above 220 bpm which is common) and it's rare to find barre chords and stuff being used. Other tips I'd definitely give is try out lower tunings, but do not do drop tunings that is a Metalcore and Nu Metal thing. D standard is my favorite (whole step down) but half step down is common as well. Stay as fast as possible, nothing should be lower than 180 bpm, you want to build your speed and endurance. When songwriting, try not to ever go above the 2 minute mark unless you are doing some Sludge Metal or Noisecore stuff. Also know when to use 2 finger and 3 finger power chords, my thing is using 3 finger power chords when you are doing eighth note progressions and slower stuff, but when doing tremolo picking sections with blast beats I'd recommend using 2 finger power chords. If you are moving chords a lot try using 2 finger as well. Also experiment with distortion and tone, you want to keep it relatively flat and even on the eq but definitely high on the gain but also balanced. Overall it's about speed, efficiency on the fretboard, heavy tone, and short songs. You also have to adhere to the tradition of downstroking, you have to make the former legends of the punk scene happy and retain that beautiful tradition all us punks share. Blast and thrash away my friends.

I can palm mute downstrokes just fine, but when I try to stroke up and down while palm muting it gets really choppy on the upstrokes and doesn't sound smooth. Am I not supposed to palm mute upstrokes? If my holding the pick too high up and creating to much space on the end of the pick so it gets caught up in the strings? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and no matter how many UA-cam videos I've seen, none of them ever go in depth on the mechanics of palm muting technique so I can figure out where I'm fucking up.

I'm guessing those points where the sound cuts out are segments where you played something that sounded too much like something protected by "copyright", yeah?

A lot o’ Gatekeepers in the comments. “That ain’t Punk Rock” and all that shit. There’s a process to it. It’s just Raw and bare bones. Then I should just fucking slap my wiener on the fretboard if there are no rules. ‘Coz that’s Punk right? This dude who did an amazing job at putting together this video showed what Punk musicians do and did. Stop gatekeeping. This isn’t about the attitude or spirit of it. There’s an actual process to things. This is why the genre as a whole is on life support. People dictating what is or isn’t. Stfu. Play and enjoy the damn music. Good job, Bud.

Punk guitar: use whatever technique you need in order to play your song. That’s the guitar.
Now play it like your life depends on it.
    My favorite punk guitarists:
Houndog Taylor, Wilco Johnson, Joe Strummer, Fred Smith, Denis Tek, Captain Sensible, Jerry Only (bass), Greg Ghinn, Bob Stinson, Dangerous Don Rich, Dave Downey, Dave Davis.... East Bay Ray, Serge Loobkoff, Brian Baker.... Keef.
Mick Ronson..... anyway, there are no punk techniques. There is attack, passion and heart.
Steve Earl gets it done.... the playing in this video is good but nothing about it makes my heart catch in my throat.
