Ruger EC9S Mag Feed Problem - I Don't Like this Gun

- Fast forward to 7:21 if you want to see only the mag feed problem. It does it with other magazines also. Before that, I talk about some other issues I have with the gun.
I listened to you….all you’ve done is reveal your inexperience in gun matters…..these EC9s are one of the best values for the money gun deals ….most experienced owners of this gun have no problem hitting 10” plates at 30 to 40 yds with the well regulated fixed sights….these perform well above their price point in competent hands.
I hope you can afford a better gun soon, so you don't have to live in denial about this garbage gun. Most people here in the comments have the same problem with this gun. Unless it was purchased in the last few months.
he didnt complain bout accuracy
@@MikeWithTheGunscan you show the mag feed problem ?
I own an EC9s. I switch between the 7 and 10 round extended mag, depending on how much concealability I want, and do not have that issue. To the contrary, I had a 1st gen LCP .380 that fell apart while shooting. The take down pin broke and the slide slid forward almost completely off the frame with a live round. I only had about 50 rounds through it and bought it brand new. Ruger fixed it no problems, but I will never carry a gun that has any major failure so I traded it in immediately. I find the EC9S to be more comfortable and a better fit for my larger hand. The LCP was too small and the long trigger pull too long which made it bind up on my finger. I couldn't easily shoot it without really focusing on how I positioned my trigger finger. For me, the EC9s is a great carry choice. Good luck with your EC9. At least if you trade it in you're not losing too much. Every cheap firearm model will have a bad apple here or there.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the LCP. I carry an LCP and I am surprised to hear this.
Phew I don’t wana use my lcp now
@@Bighannes410 I've heard the 2ng gen LCP is much better. My LCP was a 1st gen.
I have one. Inherited it, but it was basically not used. Cleaned it up and lubed it really good. Put about 100 rounds through it.
My issue is the slide will lock open after 2 or 3 rounds like the mag is empty. I can slingshot it back closed and shoot, it it did it like 5 times in 100 rounds.
I’ll never carry it for that reason. Don’t trust it.
I’ve been having issues with the ec9s. Got it new in 2022. It fails to eject the round and fails to feed a round while shooting. I don’t feel comfortable shooting this gun anymore. Not sure what’s the issue bc I did recently shoot it after cleaning and this happened. I couldn’t get through one mag without a failure. The ec9s has run fine for me until recent months. I’ve fired well over 500 rounds through it as well.
Same. I sent mine back to the factory due to it stovepipeing every other shot. I received it back, put 40 rds through, and it stovepiped again. Either it's the extractor or the chamber is too large, causing the bullet casing to bulge. I'm going to send it back again. I don't trust it, probably never will.
I have the same exact problem with my LC9s. It's the ammo. This model, based on the design of the magazine, does not like Hornady Critical Defense. If you load 4 rounds in the mag, you'll have no problem. After that, the angle at which the top round starts angling down during loading will get steeper and steeper. By the 7th round (not to mention the extended magazine option with 9 rounds) the bullet pushes down really low and is prone to actually binding up in the magazine itself and won't even feed at times (with the extended mag, the 8th and 9th round won't feed at all with Hornady). Due to how Hornady sits in the mag (I think because the bullet is shorter than other brands and leaves more space in the mag), the 7th round's rim actually rests inside the rim of the 6th round. When you chamber it, the angle at which it comes out of the mag causes the rim to basically bind up with the 6th round's rim indentation and it drags it out with it. It's dumb, I agree. If you switch to any other defense ammo the issue goes away. It's just Hornady and this model. I still carry my LC9s and it has proven to be very reliable (only 1 failure to feed on the second round with the extended magazine in about 500 rounds) and wish it would feed Hornady, but they're simply not compatible. I bet when Ruger did the testing on your gun, they only loaded 3 rounds -- and it will work perfectly with 3 rounds. It's when it's loaded with 6+ that you really start having issues.
Which JHP's have worked reliably for you?
@@Amir_Nassir Federal HST JHP work great.
@@FrankieJizking-js3yv Thank you, Frank
I installed a laser and a M*Carbo spring kit before I even shot the new EC9S. I have the supplied 7-round magazine and 2 Promag 10 rounders. I shot 50 rounds in the 3 magazines without failure! The gun ran perfectly!!!!!
I have two unfired eEC9s' and they both drop rounds when the magazine is removed after a manual cycle. I'm confident that it will clear-up after break-in. In the interim, I drop one in the spout then insert a full mag.
How recently did you buy them? I got mine in April of 2019. I am curious if they fixed this issue on newer ones.
@@MikeWithTheGuns 2022
Did it ever clear up I’m having same problem, bought it new and greased it but haven’t been able to fire
I can’t even get 7rds loaded in the mag and I just bought the gun today. I’m hoping it’s just because it’s new and needs to be broken in. But it’s pretty sad that this is an issue right now. I even tried with my speed loader I can’t get it to push down to add the 7th bullet.
That surprises me with a single stack mag so small like this! I was able to get all 7 in this one, but it doesn't load the way I think it should.
I have the Ruger Lc9 and I’m having the same issue I’ve tried multiple ammo did you ever find a solution?
It happens on mine when I do same thing you did. But in the range I shot over 500 rounds with no hiccups. I wonder if it has anything to do with mag disconnect feature, it could be binding on ammo when releasing mag.
That is an interesting theory, that could have something to do with it.
i installed the aegis short stroke trigger kit deletes the mag trigger lock out feature so it will fire without a mag in it. my ec9s doesn't drop a round, also mcarbo firing pin spring upgrade for better primer strikes.@@MikeWithTheGuns
I have the ec9s and both my factory 7 round and 9 round mags work flawless with mag tech FMJ Ball ammunition this guy is inexperienced and with the 9rnd factory mags and the hogue handall grip it has an excellent purchase and reliability
he wasnt using that ammo
new strong magazine spring is pulling 2nd round forward slightly when you rack it
gun will cycle it fine and shoot correctly but if you remove the magazine as it comes out the round gets stripped out as its sticking out slightly
to put one in the pipe load one round rack it then fill the magazine
mine did that when new now that the magazines have been filled a while it doesn't happen
get you a hogue grip or grip tape if its to thin
its a really good gun
So you think it is a mag problem, with all the new mags that haven't been broken in? That would make sense for why it does it on both mags then, because they are both new.
I bought mine in october of 2022 after a 150 rds. I couldnt get through 1 mag without it not feeding. The slide will lock and the mag wont feed.
Yours was new in October 2022? It seems like it may still be an issue with the new ones then.
@@MikeWithTheGuns Another video on the lc9s mags, gave a good point. The magazine creates a gap between the bullets, causing a jam around the 4th or 5th rd. Mine jams everytime at those rds.
@@MikeWithTheGuns I want to get it fixed, it is a great shooter.
I am sending my ec9s back,I use the exact same ammo, Hornady critical defense, it started jamming not long after I purchased, so I’ve tried three different types of ammo combined and I can’t shoot a full clip without it jamming, it seems like while shooting the bullets are too big to fit in the barrel or it loads at a odd angle, I disassembled it and all the types of shells in go in fine With the barrel out of the gun,I wish I had not bought it.
Sometimes I do wish this thing was returnable.
Same issue here. Can never get through a full magazine without a hiccup.
Put a grip on it if you want more bulk. My EC9S doesn't share the mag issue, btw, no matter what rounds I use. I've got 4 mags, 7s and 9s. Have you tried a different mag? That may be the problem.
Did they remove the loaded mag with a round in the chamber as you did ?
I don't think they did it that way. I think they just shot it to verify function, and sent it back.
The only problem I see is that you turned the gun sideways, and so you had to PULL on the magazine while pressing the mag release. If you'd held the gun upright and pressed the mag release, would the magazine NOT slide out on its own, under the added pressure from the magazine spring? Then THAT would be a problem, although I understand some Glock owners overcame that with steel mags. I have the LC9, as well as an LCP Max and SR40, and never experienced any problems with any Ruger.
I have this gun, never happened to me ever. My only problem with it is how hard it is to load the magazine past the 4th shell
sounds like a magazine issue. I carry a LCP as well. My first outing to the range I threw a magazine away. When researching the issue, I discovered, it is recommended to run a couple hundred rounds of ball ammunition in first. Till it gets broken in and feed ramp polished. Tgen try firing your security rounds. Try a couple new Ruger mags and 200 rounds of ball ammunition. I also racked my LCP about a thousand times before my second trip to the range.
Hey there.....
I have the same gun and same issue using the Hornady Critical Defense 9mm Lugar FTX ammo.
I then tested several self defense ammo and discovered that using Hornady American Gunner 9mm 115gr XTP took care of this issue.....
Try it and let me know.....good luck!
I'm gonna see if mine does this this evening. Had a misfire issue after only 3 or 4 mags. Noticed the gun wasn't test fired during my first field strip/ cleaning, came dry as a bone. The slide release button is EXTREMELY hard to engage and ive got strong than average hand strength due to my profession.
Its my second gun and first name brand purchase so I'd love for my issues to be easy fixes!
That's a slide stop not release I called Ruger was told u could damage the slide stop & spring using it to release the slide
Rack until the mag goes dry. It might be the mags lips could be damaged. Take it to the range and shoot it so you have a better idea on what could be the problem.
I think I tried this with two different mags.
I have had several failure to feed issues with maybe 500 rnds run. I keep only because it fits in pocket. My CZ75 compact has never failed with about 1k rnds run. Just too big for pocket carry
I am glad I posted this video, because it seems that this problem is a lot more common on this gun than it should be.
Yea man.. I’ve been havin issues too. When I go to cock the slide it some times get stuck with the slide back. Double feeds bullets sometimes . It’s not a horrible gun but u can definitely tell the value in it . U get what u pay for I guess .
I find it to be a great gun.Sorry your having this problem.
When did you buy yours? Maybe they fixed the issue. I got this one in April of 2019.
Didn’t you know it was single stack/hold it before you bought it? The point of it is to be slim and small for concealed carry.
The issue with the bullet falling out is strange, but it does not impact the proper function of the firearm. I would take it to the range, verify that it will reliably shoot, and then carry it.
I knew it was single stack, that's not my main problem with it. Some people may have problems firing the gun because of this same issue. It could cause the next round to get jammed while the chamber is open.
My feed issues went totally away after getting over 100 rounds and cleaning it thoroughly a couple of times.
This is good to hear. I still don't like this gun though.
I have a LCP with laser maxx I love it for edc functions great but if I slam the mag home with the slide back it will A chamber the round slamming the slide forward or it will stove pipe a live round or nose up the round and jam the mag have to strip the mag with all my strength usually sending one of the rounds flying out the eject is this a mag issue or a lock back issue ??
That sounds like a very different issue than this. I have not had any problems with my LCP.
Shot hundreds of rounds through this EC9S never had a problem, even after market mags? IDK what to tell ya.
I guess you got a good one. It has happened to a few lucky people.
I run a full cycle check and eject all the rounds what’s the problem with that why would any say not to ?? I would also would assume it fell out the chamber very unsafe
You could do it, and the gun may get better over time. But I prefer to trust guns that have not done this, they feel more reliable to me. This makes me question this gun's reliability.
I have the EC9s and have not had that problem at all. Sorry to hear you are having problems.
I am curious when you bought it? I have had this one since April of 2019.
@@MikeWithTheGuns I bought just 4 months ago
I’ve put 6000 rounds and I have had no issues. It might be the ammo you’re using.
What ammo do you use?
@@guardianofprecision6746 PMC, Belom and Magtech
It's really the only gun that does this to me though. I feel like I got a bad one.
@@MikeWithTheGuns yeah doing research on it some people either got a good one or a semi defective one
I bought this one in April of 2019. They may have fixed the issue at some point on the newer ones.
Mine pulls the 2nd round half way now that the mag spring is worn out a little it does it less It works fine tho
Never heard a good thing about Ruger pistols, except customer service.
My Ruger LCP that I carry is great. I have not had any problems with my Ruger LCP, and I hear many great things about the LCP. This gun here is nothing like it, even though it looks similar.
@@MikeWithTheGuns I would want to upgrade by now.
I dont think there's anything wrong with it...probably just a tight spring. Worst case buy two more mags for it then try? It's a 250 dollar gun, a few extra mags won't hurt anyway. But my security 9 (the bigger one you mentioned) is honestly one of my favorites and never has given me one issue.
Many people here are saying they have the same issue, I think it's the gun. My Ruger LCP is great, but this EC9S is bad.
@@MikeWithTheGuns I do want to buy an lcp soon.
Had a lc9s pro. Took it to the range 7 or 8 times and fired 100 rounds every time. Multiple times every single range day I had a malfunction that was the same every time. Would fire a round, eject case, and next round would get caught in slide bullet facing straight up. Every time. Was not limp wristing. Figured it was a magazine issue but could not trust my life with it and sold it.
I think that is exactly what is happening here. It is trying to load 2 rounds, so maybe when the first one ejects the next one is already pushing up while the chamber is open.
I watched this video specifically to see if someone else figured out this problem. My wife's lc9s is doing that exact same thing with the exact same ammo. She even had a new round get stuck vertically after a shot using winchester fmj. Wtf
And the LC9S is supposed to be the upgraded model.
My father sent me a link to this video after my issue as your wife has had. This is my second gun, my first name brand and my first conceal carry size. After about 3 mags I had that issue. Shooting at a farm there's no gun expert to help explain what's happening. Luckily I educated myself on misfire trouble shooting before I ever bought a firearm.
The slide release button is also EXTREMELY hard to engage and I'm 15 years into a profession that requires hand strength!
It's gotta be your mag. Lips are too wide. I dont have your problem, but i do have a stove piping issues (jam due to failure to extract shell, with a live round behind it)
I also agree, i hate this gun.
Just pick mine up today I’m having the same exact issue I like Ruger but I hate this gun
I bought it because I like my Ruger LCP. But if I would have bought this one first, I would have never considered another Ruger.
Don’t take this the wrong way because I support EVERY legal gun owner out there. But you are clearly a novice shooter. That 2nd round falling out thru the mag well after you’ve ejected the mag is not a deal breaker. Even if it happens every single time you eject a loaded mag. When you put the first round in the chamber, that 2nd round is still sitting right where it’s supposed to be, in the mag. It’s not like it’s rolling around inside the gun waiting to cause death and destruction to the shooter. It is the act of ejecting the loaded mag that causes the 2nd round to separate from the mag and fall out after it. It’s a simple fix, put it back in the mag along with the extra round, no worries. The EC9s is a VERY reliable pistol. I bought mine in May 2019. Since then I’ve put 600 rounds thru it and not a single misfire or stove pipe or failure to feed or failure to eject. The gun has functioned as designed, flawlessly. I can only remember a round dropping out of the mag well twice in 5 years. But if it happened every single time, I’d still keep using this gun. Loading the extra round is something you do at home, so what if the 2nd round falls out when you eject the mag, it’s not a big deal. This is an extremely reliable pistol, that’s the important thing here. Don’t get hung up on the quirks and instead focus on the stuff that really matters. Can you rely on this gun to save your life in a short range (under 25 yds) gunfight? Yes! Is this gun safe to operate? Yes! A round falling out when you eject a mag does NOT render this gun unsafe. I’ve never used a 9-round extended mag with this gun because that contradicts its best feature, conceal ability. The way I see it, if you can’t get the job done with 8 rounds then 2 more probably won’t make a difference. My Security-9 gives me 10+1 but it’s way harder to conceal. My Glock 36 only has 6+1 and it’s harder to conceal. The only issue I have with this gun is having to use a dummy mag for takedown, that is ridiculous and a poor design. But that too is something done at home and not in the field. I would like a better trigger but I can live with the stock trigger. I would like a mag disconnect delete mod as well. But this is a $300 pistol that l’ve seen on sale for as little as $246. In that price range you cannot find a better single stack 9mm. I’ve seen cheap guns, I’ve owned cheap guns. This one punches above its price range and used ones still cost as much as new because of it.
I own an older LC9S and have never had one single problem with it. I think another magazine is in the order of the day. In fact, since the LC9S is one of several different firearms I carry at various times I always pull the magazine out of all of them after chambering which ever pistol I am carrying and add the final round to the magazine. What I witnessed has never ever happened to me with any pistol. Get another magazine and shoot the dog shit out of that gun like it was intended to be used. These are good guns.
It did this on 2 separate mags. It is possible the problem could resolve as the mags get worn in. But none of my other guns do that!
@@MikeWithTheGuns Send it back to Ruger. Out of curiosity, what grain bullets are being used? Some people have mentioned that 147 grain ammo can cause issues with single stack pistols but it has not on my LC9S or Kahr PM9.
I sent it back 2 times already, they did not see any problem. The Hornady Critical Defense I first used was 115 grain. The Sig Sauer Ammo was a little better for this issue, and it was 124 grain.
@@MikeWithTheGuns Sigh... Sadly, you might just have a problem child. I hate to hear about things like this. That's not right and we both know it.
