South Africa also has milk in a bag, we call it sachets. We also have boxed wine, usually the cheaper lower quality wine comes in a box. We also have tomato sauce (ketchup) flavoured chips. 😄
Actually, bags of milk were very popular in Brazil until the 90s/2000s (you still can find them in some supermarkets). But now, boxes of milk are more common, mainly because they last longer. The holders are super familiar to me :D
Yes, last longer and tastes like crap :-( . I miss the fresh plastic milk in Brasil .... btw, I live in Canada/Quebec for almost 2 decades now, the quality of milk here is usually very good, much better than whatever they sell in the US.
non dairy milk in cartons too. last longer than dairy milk, i have to say. like over 6 months more. 1.00 stores sell them now. don't buy it in bulk barn, over 5.00 there. 2.50 in all other stores.. and like i said, shelf life is almost a yr!
When i was a kid in the 70's (in Canada) our milk was delivered, in those bags. We had a milk cupboard accessible from inside and outside, where they left it. Not sure when it stopped, or if my mom cancelled it at some point, but i don't think milk is delivered that way anywhere anymore. Surprising to see it sold in the east, it's not sold in walmart in western Canada.
I'm an old guy, but up to the 90's milk was also sold in bags in Brasil, wich at home we put in the same kind of holsters you have. You have sent me back to my youth.
I've lived in Canada for 18 years and in the west part of Canada, we don't do a bag of milk unlike in the east Canada part. Honestly, I've always shopped at most ethnic stores so I always find many different exotic fruits, veggies and products. Not sure where Ivana is from in Indonesia, Paria aka bittermelon is quite staple in certain areas in Indonesia such as west java, sumatra & south sulawesi. I grew up with bitternelon in a Sumatran household.
All those exotic fruits and veg they’ve actually always had in Canada, but were primarily sold at ethnic grocery stores. Over the past ten years they are being sold more at mainstream grocery store.
We don't have bag milk in the U.S. We don't have ketchup, cucumber or the All Dressed Lays chips. I'm always amazed that Canadians call Kraft macaroni and cheese "Kraft Dinner". Similar prices on groceries except for cheese and meat which is way more than U.S. But I did hear that Canada has better quality meat. I just subscribed. I love shopping videos the best. Thank you!
Up until about a year ago, we didn't sell Reese's Peanut Butter Cups either. Since their inception, they were always manufactured and marketed in Canada as Reese Peanut Butter Cups. Notice the lack of apostrophe. This is because Canada is a bilingual country (English/French), and the French language does not use an apostrophe for possessive. That's the way they've been marketed my entire life, until recently I've seen shelves with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (also made in Canada). Bagged milk is only sold within certain regions and provinces of Canada...Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. It is not widely sold anywhere in western Canada...Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, or British Columbia. I've lived in Calgary Alberta since 1977, and haven't seen bagged milk sold here since the early 1980s. It's also not available in Newfoundland - Labrador.
There are milk bags in Brazil too. Normally in bakeries rather than in supermarkets. They usually taste better, actually. I've seen wine in boxes in Argentina too.
It's very interesting to see how d Canadian packed their fresh milk from d grocery store, in a plastic bag. Well, those fresh produce n goods sold in d supermarket r still affordable, I guess.
In Malaysia, we don't have locally produced Lay's chips, but we have d imported Lay's chips from Thailand n they r quite delicious n very affordable ie RM3 for a small packet, d flavors r very interesting like salted egg, chilli shrimps etc.
Wonderful to see you guys back in your home country...yeah, home sweet home. Interesting tour around that Wal- Mart, lots of goods...that Indo Mie is yummy !!! Hope your mom will like it. Thanks for posting, Steve lvana.
Nice video! Romania also used to have plastic milk bags and they looked the same. If you search lapte la pungă you will find some old pictures. But we still have the plastic wine bag in a cardboard box, just as you shown in the video, but they don't sell them in a supermarket, there are small wine stores, usually at the ground floor of apartment buildings, where you can find these wine bags
no respectable Romanian will drink wine from a bag. There are some wine brands that package the product in plastic bottles, but those are considered low end crap product. The only place people will not frown on plastic is when they buy wine from the winery directly. But still, that's as low as we go, no plastic bags, thank God XD
As of this very second, the Canadian Dollar is R13.62 South African Rand. The Wonder Bread comes to R37.46 per loaf. The price for a standard loaf of bread in South Africa is roughly between R15.99 - R20.99. We sell bagged milk from the fridges for about 40 years now, but sometimes you find that it isn't as fresh, as the ones you get in a 2 Litre bottle. They tend to go sour within a day or two. The US Dollar is currently at R18.60. So, it is a bit cheaper in Canada, but a lot more expensive in South African Rand ! 👍
Regarding milk sold in bags, in Brazil this has always been the way. You had three types of milk, A, B &the cheaper Type C. Also the plastic milk holder thingee. The milk box arrived in Brazil's market, most notably in Rio & Sao Paulo around 1977/78. By the eighties bag milk had pretty much disappeared in most cities. Weird to see it used in Canada still as the preferred milk container.
Don't know about the rest of Brazil, but bag milk is still sold in the Northeast, you can find them in any supermarket. In my house, we only buy bag milk because it's healthier
You can somewhat translate the 'old' A,B and C types to "integral", "semi-desnatado" and "desnatado". In canada they are sold as fat percentage: 1%, 2% and 3.25%
At 4:18. You see many stores offering discounts on items if you buy two or three at a time. As for bread, the prices vary greatly depending on what store you go to.
Reporting in from the UK. We have boxed wine, it's typically available from any major supermarket, however, it is not much cheaper than bottled wine. Lay's and Doritos are both PepsiCo brands, so not competitors. Lay's is sold as Walkers here, although due to the constant squeeze on wages many of us prefer the German discounters' private labels, namely those of Lidl and Aldi (South).
Small note.. When you say no alcohol in supermarkets in Canada. Its all Canada except the province of Quebec. Here we have it in supermarkets, walmart, cosco, even convenience stores
Oh wow I didn’t know that. Albertan here. Lots of differences from east to west coast. I have never had bagged milk in my life. That’s one big thing I’ve always noticed in videos like this the bagged milk thing.
Man I miss ketchup chips. I lived in Toronto for 3.5 years after moving there from Romania. I smuggled a few bags across the border when I visited last lol. And I totally forgot about the milk in bags… man brings me back to the early to mid 90s.
There is a spice company called Badilla. They sell dry ketchup powder. Anything you sprinkle it on tastes like ketchup. Would easily work on potato chips!
Hey guys! I’m brazilian but I live in Canada for 8 years now, in Alberta. We don’t have milk in bags… its usually cartons or plastic jugs. That’s interesting to see that in Ontario you guys have on plastic bags like we have in Brazil.
bags of mil have been around over 50 yrs. its nothing new. born and raised in Canada. but i don't drink dairy milk anymore. last 6 yrs or so. and i make my own oat milk, sometimes too.
also off question OK if you go to Canada country OK and I buy vehicle over there then went I want to go back to my home country to visit friends and family member what will happen to the vehicle???????????thank you for help sorry for bad english
If a few people from your home country shop at a particular store, you can speak with the store manager and request that they begin stocking a few of the specialty ingredients that you need to make some of your favorite recipes. Not all stores will do this, but, in my experience, many will. They usually recognize that, even if they were to lose a little money on those few specialty items, the people who go there to buy those items will usually do the rest of their regular grocery shopping there as well.
As of May 1, 2023 most stores in Ontario Canada have no plastic bags (No Frills excepted). There are stores that don't even offer cloth bags to buy. They will sell you a brown paper bag instead.
Nice tour of the supermarket there! Sugar free syrup?? LOL! funny! And my husband is shopping for a 75" tv !! First choice LG,(on promotion Rm4k+) then Samsung or Sony.
I still remember when we DIDN'T have bagged milk. Milk came in a large, white, plastic jug with a plastic ring around the neck and sealed with a small, round, cardboard lid like a pog. When your milk jug was empty you would bring it back to the corner store and insert the plastic ring on this tall metal pole near the back of the store. The jug would slide down the pole to be picked up, cleaned and re-used.
7:22 We had this in Brazil, in maybe what, 30 years ago? I remember when I was a child, milk was sold in these bags. But then long life milk came in and I never saw bag milk again.
Perfect timing, I’m going to Canada 🍁 🇨🇦 for my first time in a week!! (Minnesota to New York through Ontario & back via Michigan) We have bagged milk in Minnesota too, grew up with it.
Welcome back home! just in time for winter storms and yes prices have increased soo much now . 😘 That olive oil brand , is cheaper at Costco , they are 2 bottles and is organic too.
ya , but costco u have to pay for membership. so just to save a few bucks? the superstores, dont charge memberships. one in Oshawa. for single people, or 2 in a house, y be forced to buy BULK! or pay to do so, twice over!
@cuet Timmonz yes it's true that the quantity is a little more than regular, but even though you pay that membership overall you save more money, cheese for instance is more expensive to any other stores and other products as well, but if you are single maybe someone , a friend that has a membership could help you.
Prices here in the US are higher. The reason why the eggs were sold out is due the egg crises in North America. avian flu affected the egg production increasing demand and hiking up the prices.
Compared to me, some Canadians live so differently. It would never in a million years dawn on me to do groceries at Walmart. A few years back, I had to do a Google search to figure out where there was a store. I had forgotten that they even existed.
I think for actual unprocessed food (veggies, meat, bread, etc.) they are not subject to taxes just processed (junk food) and packaged products that are recyclable have refund and environmental fees attached. That’s how it works in Alberta anyways but we only have 5% federal GST and no provincial sales taxes or harmonized taxes.
Bag milk is also the rule in Australia só I heard. We used to have it in Brazil, but fell out of fashion. Sweden also has boxed wine. They inventeded it.
Australia has never had bagged milk, I live here. Australia invented boxed wine 50 years ago and sells here for as low as $3 a litre. Liquor, wine and beer is sold in many supermarkets here except in 2 states. Canadian prices are similar to Australian except our minimum wage is 30% higher than Canada so it is relatively more affordable.
No, no bagged milk in Australia. We do, however, have boxed wine. And ketchup flavoured chips. We have NEVER had bagged milk. Used to be in glass bottles, now in plastic bottles or cartons. I’m an Aussie - born and raised.
What a shock it must be after being in Brazil and I don't just mean the weather. Prices too must be much lower in Brazil. In Walmart you bought some food items that must not have been taxed like cereal, fruit, maple syrup. But yeah, the taxes in Canada are brutal. Its a great country though and I love to go there especially in the summer!
I lived in Toronto for 11 yrs as a chef, and all the things you found to be new or rare, I bought in the ethnic sections of town since the 1970's, and even where I live now, Brantford, we have a load of ethnic foods and veg..
Shows how long you’ve not been shopping tcl is one of the biggest electronics now. They bought the naming rights to the “Chinese theater” in Hollywood.
It’s funny because I’m from the us and the microwave food is the same here… most people think it’s gross. I grew up on it because both my parents worked and I started staying home alone with my siblings at 7 years old. We were not allowed to touch the oven or stove until we turned 10/11 years old so my mom would find sales where the microwave meals would be like buy 5 for $10 etc. and stock up so that my siblings and I had hot food in the winter. In the summer we ate sandwiches and cereal
Plenty of boxed wine in the states. lol. Also, when I was in middle school (mid 90s), my school had individual bagged milk for lunch. Those lasted a couple of years and I never saw them again! This was in West Virginia.
Bag milk is not a Canadian thing. It's an Ontario thing if anything. As stated in the comments there are other countries that use bagged milk. But you have obviously not been to any other province in Canada as if you had, you would know that bagged milk is only in Ontario and maybe a few other small communities.
Dolorama, food basics and freshco are the cheapest grocery stores in Canada, farmboy and Loblaws have higher quality, Loblaws is the biggest store franchise in Canada, bigger then wallmart and wallmart is now just that average quality store that has a little bit of everything. Oh and for those in the Ottawa region, Giant Tiger is not only as cheap as the other 3 cheapest grocery stores but also has cheap clothing and shoes. Its like a a mini version of what wallmart used to be.
Frito Lay Canada's brands include Lay's, Doritos, Tostitos, Smartfood, SunChips, Ruffles, Munchies, Spitz and Cheetos. try learning something you know coke owns many brands too oh just like pepsi
Yea i miss walmart but im not missing the prices. The eggs are 4.18 per carton wow.Used to be 1.29 !! At least honey nut cheerios is still decently priced at 3 for 10. Ivana stay away from Hungry Man or Swanson. The most decent tv dinner imo is Stouffers. Mayochup 😂 😂 😂
In Ukraine, you can buy milk and any milk-based product in a plastic bag (Yoghurts, Kefirs, skimmed milk, Ryazhanka, Ayran, etc.). We used to have wine in a plastic bag (only a cheap one), but now it is in cardboard or plastic bottles (only a very cheap ones).
I’m Canadian, and I’ve never heard of bag milk in my entire life. My experiences aren’t the only ones though, so maybe it’s more common than I though. Although, I’ve never seen it in a Walmart like this before.
Hi first time here, I only buy organic fruits and veggies dat you can find at organic food market ,or some of them has organic in groceries store .and you can buy organic meat at butcher or a farm .I buy organic milk 3% lactantia ar costco the price is cheaper there .
In Uruguay (where I live) and Argentina milk also comes in bags but you buy them individually (1L). There’s also a mix of ketchup and mayo here but it’s called Golf Sauce for some reason 😂
Hello, I hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness, prosperity, love 💚 , and peace all over the world 🌏. I would love us to be good friends in honesty and in trust so as time goes on it will bring something great for us in the future, hope you don't mind? I'm Frank Lange from San Francisco, California where are you from if I may ask?❤
So lovely to see you vlogging about Canada while I'm sitting in Canada, it's as good as when you were back in Paksitan and I was missing Pakistan while being in Canada.
In South Africa about 50% of milk bought is bag milk, or as we call it a sachet, because its the cheapest option. And also we have Tomato Sauce chips, which is similar to Ketchup, but is made by Simba, which is also owned by FritoLay. And also 90% of wine bought is SA is boxed wine😅
For anyone curious. Walmart is probably the worst grocery store in Canada. The variety and quality of food available at other grocery stores, like superstore, save on foods, safeway are exponentially better. When I go to walmart, I always have to go somewhere else for something that was missing from walmart. We have a lot of different chains of grocery stores, specializing in the type of food you want. Korean Grocery store - H mart, Japanese grocery store - T and T, Italian grocery stores - Spinellis.
I feel that people in Ontario all assume that it is, I see it in videos often about the bagged milk. Albertan here never had bagged milk in my life never seen it in a store either. 😂
Maybe it's an Ontario thing but in Alberta we DO NOT have bagged milk. Cardboard carton, or plastic 1 gal jug. Never make hungry man dinners in the microwave. Follow the oven directions.
I'm into my forties and I've never used bagged milk except a couple times at my grandparent's place back in the 80's. Think it's far more popular in the east.
When i was a kid here in Brazil i just drink milk in plástico bag just like in Canadá. Is a very traditional Brazilian Thing drink milk in plástico bags.
Yikes, sticker shock! If Wal-Mart is that expensive, imagine the prices at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or a high-end grocery. I wonder how the same store prices compare i.e. 7-11 in Canada vs. Malaysia or some other country.
Bags of Milk from what I've gathered are only in Eastern Canada, us in the west (At least Saskatchewan & Alberta) havn't had bagged milk since the 80's.
Brazil's got bag milk too. It's not often at the supermarkets because of its short expiring dates. You usually find them at bakeries.
Serbia used to have it in '90s but we must to cook it before use.
Only second line countries use bag milk...
Yep, the rest of world usually have fresh milk in plastic bottles or the Swedish invention of TetraPak, paper cartons
India has bag milk but you have to pasteurize it yourself or risk getting diseases like Tuberculosis.
America had bag milk in the 80s!! It was the cheapest way to buy it. It disappeared before the 90s hit!!!
I love Canadian english, its so easy to understand, no lot of slang.
Happy to see you both safe with family.
Eles viajaram o litoral do Brasil, e não aconteceu nada. Meu irmão foi na Europa, e foi assaltado!

UHT milk tastes really bad. The dairy industry forced the UHT milk slowly in the 90s and Brazilians never complained.
We had them in the UK in the 70's briefly, they were delivered by the milkman, not sure if they ever got as far as supermarkets.

We had bagged milk in Germany in the 1970s. Now, it comes in a carton and costs about 1$ (US) per liter.

ya , but costco u have to pay for membership. so just to save a few bucks? the superstores, dont charge memberships. one in Oshawa. for single people, or 2 in a house, y be forced to buy BULK! or pay to do so, twice over!
You mean the stores are cheaper than Walmart ?
Bagged milk is more specifically an Eastern Canadian. It’s all in jugs in Western Canada.
I think for actual unprocessed food (veggies, meat, bread, etc.) they are not subject to taxes just processed (junk food) and packaged products that are recyclable have refund and environmental fees attached. That’s how it works in Alberta anyways but we only have 5% federal GST and no provincial sales taxes or harmonized taxes.
haha the bagged milk is so unique! I’ve studied in Vancouver for 4 years. I only saw Dairyland milk in a regular package.
In Costa Rica Mayochup is actually salsa rosada( Pink sauce) and it’s really popular
When I lived in Toronto the theatre also had Ketchup powder for your popcorn. I truly miss the poutine more than anything!
It's more an Eastern Canada thing. It's also common in Quebec and the maritimes.
Boxed wine in France too! And lays ketchup as well, but it’s not the same, the chips are orange…as a Canadian expat, it hurts…
Hello again,I forgot to say that we also have box wine in Romania 😃
Prices have gone up so much from when I was there (2014/15). I know it's been 10 years, but I wouldn't expect such price hike!
Frito Lay Canada's brands include Lay's, Doritos, Tostitos, Smartfood, SunChips, Ruffles, Munchies, Spitz and Cheetos.
try learning something
you know coke owns many brands too oh just like pepsi
We like to drink bag milk here too, in Brazil! It's more healthy and cheaper. Surprised to see it in Canada!
I’m Canadian, and I’ve never heard of bag milk in my entire life. My experiences aren’t the only ones though, so maybe it’s more common than I though. Although, I’ve never seen it in a Walmart like this before.
I’m from BC 🇨🇦 and as a child I remember the milk man would deliver the bagged milk 🥛 I’m 51 years old now
Hello ticis. How are you ?
New sub! You came onto my UA-cam recommended. Cheers from New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦
Most favorite flavor! I take several bags back home when I visit the far north !!
I rarely live in such a luxurious situation, from time to time I consume these products and they are exhausted from the market quickly
Love your stairs and the paneling.
I'm Frank Lange from San Francisco, California where are you from if I may ask?❤
We have bagged milk in South Africa as well. Normally cheaper than the rest of the options.
Love Walmart. You’re very thorough. Thank you for sharing.
Hello Seeth. How are you ?
Hello seeth. How are you ?
Love the variety of Lays Potatoe Chips as wish we had those here in the US!
So lovely to see you vlogging about Canada while I'm sitting in Canada, it's as good as when you were back in Paksitan and I was missing Pakistan while being in Canada.
Enjoy your home. Regards from Brazil
I never do my groceries in Walmart
You can find more choices better quality and even cheaper somewhere else
Miss both of you, spend time with your mom
Hello wave. How are you ?
Yeah, we got those milk bags and bag holders too 🇧🇷. Here in Natal we still can buy those milk bags at any grocery store.
In British Columbia Canada we don't have bagged milk though. So not an all around Canadian thing.
I feel that people in Ontario all assume that it is, I see it in videos often about the bagged milk. Albertan here never had bagged milk in my life never seen it in a store either. 😂
Steeves maple, proudly made in Elgin NB
Boxed or cask wine was invented in Australia in 1964. Commonly referred to as a Goon Bag. Something all true Aussies are proud of.
I‘m Chinese. The cucumber-flavored Lays is very popular in China, perhaps like sea salt & vinegar flavor in Canada.
My friend who lives in UK told me that in the meat section they ask for RUMP whenever they want to buy meat for churrasco.
I baked Canadian butter tarts last year . This is so good
I am 73 years old born and raised in USA. Grew up in California. I have never seen milk in bags.
Great video, as always! Also, Quebec sells alcohol in grocery stores anywhere (Costco/IGA/etc.)
Yikes, sticker shock! If Wal-Mart is that expensive, imagine the prices at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or a high-end grocery. I wonder how the same store prices compare i.e. 7-11 in Canada vs. Malaysia or some other country.
Hello linda. How are you ?
Hello linda. How are you ?
Good research project for someone-???🤔
Up until the 70s, milk was sold in bags in Brazil too.
Aqui no RN ainda vende
No Rio tbm vende.
it's still sold in the Northeast, in pretty much every supermarket I've been in Natal or Fortaleza.
No Rio não vejo há décadas! Onde tem? É o melhor para doce de leite.
@@Selkie63 moro na Tijuca. Nas padarias maiores por aqui tem....
KD with hotdogs and ketchup chips for dessert! Now that's Canadian!
Bags of Milk from what I've gathered are only in Eastern Canada, us in the west (At least Saskatchewan & Alberta) havn't had bagged milk since the 80's.
Ontario has bagged milk
I live in Portugal and over here we've got those boxed wines as well, it's a very economical way to dirnk wine. haha
The wine that comes in boxes is lower quality. Anything mid-range and above comes in bottles.
In South Africa we also have the sachets of milk in one liter sizes but they are coloured/branded and sold individually
