Do Canadians think these businesses get paper for free from the government or that stamps are also given to them for free from the government? the paper bills cost the businesses to send them to you. From the cost of paper to the ink to the stamp to paying a person to put it in an envelop cost the business money and the fee is the businesses way of recouping a small amount of the fee back to them. just get it emailed!!
ANYONE HOME? Are you not watching? Banks already make money from your money through investments. Their charging you for information about your account yet sending tons of junk mail.
+Charles Murphy it's all about passing cost to consumers and reducing cost, all businesses do it whether you want to believe it or not, if it cost $.50 to send a piece of paper and free to send an email, they'd want to naturally send an email.
+Charles Murphy A.) Who has a bank account, but not an email? And B.) But that still makes no sense why they would bother wasting money on junk mail well claiming to go green with the fees. It's great that they do email, but why not just email the promotions and save the bills so you have actual, physical record of where you spent that money. No one would freak out if they lost a promo email, but I bet they would if they lost their only copy of bills.
The fees TicketMaster/TicketTron can charge in the U.S.A. are even more costly, and more ridiculous. They have NO competition, and if you try to fight it, like Pearl Jam and others 20 or 25 years ago, you find out that you'll find very few even modestly sized arenas willing to work with you. Also, the "second hand" sellers like StubHub, etc., are almost ALL owned by, guess who? That's right, TicketMaster buys up a portion of high demand, high cost, concert and event tickets, including all those fees, and then they resell those same tickets, using the same system, same infrastructure, and in many cases many of the same people (often no people are even involved), but every customer will be paying lot's of money to each company, the SAME company.
+Charles Murphy ............ATM, it does cost money to get the ATM fill up with money, need to make it done by security service, so i agree, not happy ? Open an account with TD and use there machine !!
So if you keep your money in bank A but withdraw it from bank B, you shouldn't have to pay a fee? Why should bank B have to pay for the maintenance without a profit?
Banks actually have to pay a fee every time you use other ATM's, even the banks own ATM incurs a charge, every time you check balance and such there is a cost to the bank, this is the reason they are pushing so much on Mobile apps banking and online banking, because the costs of connecting to their servers and viewing balance and doing transactions is a fraction of the charges.
My phone company used to charge a fee for tone service we just set the phone to pulse and if we needed to use tones to interact with automated systems we just switched the phone to tone after dialing the number. After many years they stopped the extra charge and included the "service" for "free."
Should be a law that if more than 50% of the customer have to pay a charge or fee they cannot charge it as it is a necessity of the business operations.
Airline seat picking fees: If you let everyone pick their seats any amount of time in advance, you'd actually be WORSE off. If you wanted to fly out in 4 weeks, you'd be picking from whatever's left from people who bought months ago.
Many times when I fly I ask if there is an exit row seat available because it has more leg room for me. Normally when I ask this at the airport, there usually is and they don't charge me a fee.
My power company used to give you a discount for going to e-bill, now they charge you the same fee to receive the paper.. hahaa.. .training us like a bunch of dogs.
I think people should be charged for paper. We don't need it any more. You can download all bank documents online these days. Paper costs money. Mail services cost money. Trees to make paper cost money. Fuel to transport costs money. WTF do you need paper in 2016? You don't really.
NetRolller3D Yes, hypocrisy, agree! Still, we can do our small part and go paperless. Also, I know, it's another PITA thing we have to think about, but I'm almost sure you can opt off your banks mailing list. I opted out of ALL paper, including solicitation, from HSBC. Maybe each bank is different. Cheers
Lizzybear29 I'm American, living overseas. It makes my point even more because most of the people who you talk about not having computers or whatnot, from developing nations, HAVE phones. Those phones are their tech device and they are tech savvy. We just don't need paper trails anymore, IMO.

I was with you up until the paper bill charge. If you don't want to pay the fee, get it emailed to you and print it off. Simple! 85 cents to ship it across Canada, wear and tear on the printer, employee wages. That 2 dollars totally makes sense.

I am a previous Bell employee. The touch tone fee is a mandatory fee and all phone companies charge it. Bell happens to show you the charge rather than have it as a hidden fee.
Wait... we charge people a paper fee to keep costs low? In other words, we charge them so we don't have to charge them more? I am trying to find the logic.
I'm in the US and employers use a PAY CARD for payroll and the consumer is subjected to bank fees to get cash from the ATM only to deposit the funds into their account. Employees are subjected to the digital age and required to accept the employer's choice of payment. Some companies no longer offer a paper check to their workers.
The ATM fee makes sense, you are accessing your bank's funds that are held at another bank for your convenience. There's negotiations and lots of systems in place to set up and monitor this service, how do you think the other bank is able to confirm your card and pin, they designed systems and put them in place to do this.
Because it's not always free to your bank to get another bank to give out money to their customers. Imagine if I was a bank and sent all my clients to you to withdraw money, now you need to do the work to service my customers and have the money on hand to give them. Then you need to do more work restocking your cash inventory to service more/ your own customers. It's not only banks that have this type of set up, internet providers all own physical sections of the internet ( wires to and from servers ect) and they have contracts and deals in place to allow one internet providers customers to access info that's on the physical network of other providers.
In the case of internet providers they normally have neutral contracts if they roughly send each other the same amount of traffic, but the smaller providers have to pay fees to connect to the network that the bigger players made, so internet providers offer packages with all their expenses and fees already accounted for, while banks only charge the fee to those that actually use it. Banks compete for clients by offering the lowest fees, so they can exclude it as a regular fee from everyone and then charge it as a specific usage fee that's not covered under their basic usage ( normally free) that got you to choose them as your bank. There's always fine print for them to stick on charges for specific services.
How to avoid ATM fees...every time you go to a large grocery store or department store, get cash back on debit. They don't charge anything extra. Also, you can change your bank account to allow a certain amount of ATM withdrawals for free, even if it's a different bank.
Why didn't Bell add a rotary phone charge? :D We have similar issues with some ticket services in our country. The problem is that it's very illogical to ask additional price when buying tickets online. Why? Because for the companies it's actually cheaper to sell online than to hire employees who sell physical tickets. Ok, it depends who owns the ticket office and hosts the show, but still - the global idea is to motivate people to purchase more online. In this context, additional fees for online shopping act as a demotivator.
What people don't understand is that companies have to pay fees too and it costs these companies money to pay for their internet service, to keep their lights on, to pay someone to stuff the machines and fix jams. They're not dumb fees, they're fees that keep that service available to you.
+David A As a matter of fact I shop for groceries and everything else and I change accordingly to the prices and quality. I shop for quality and work my way down till I pay the price I want to pay. Economics rules.I have to eat and have a place to live. As long as I can save a little money I don't eat junk and always have a roof over my head. The greedy will also have a room and food and free for what ever they committed and got caught. Losers.
The dumbest charge of all is paying for a landline. Cancelled mine ten or fifteen years ago. Not only saved the $2.80 for touch tone, but also saved $24 a month in not paying the bill at all. Save $288/yr. for 10 years =$2880. That buys several nice cell phones.
Neat I'll keep that in mind. That seat picking charge just sounds ridiculous. I have motion sickness and sitting in the middle of planes instead of the side has helped greatly to prevent food from coming back out, and I can't imagine paying that charge just so I don't puke...

There are standard fees charged in exchange for a service to cover operational/staff costs and then just there’s straight up robbery because there’s no competition and they can.
I hate how they call it a “convenient fee” bc it’s NOT convenient for ME to pay that!
if you watch all these episodes of Marketplace and dont live in canada, you feel relieved... whata weird country...
ForeverMan ok
ForeverMan ، thinks god I don't leave there
Im in the USA and dont. Because much it it applies in all Western Capitalist type countries.
Pretty judgmental
Its prob better than your country lol
The "oil recycling fee" you pay when you get an oil change! There are companies that BID on buying the used oil! They get the oil, collect the recycling fee, and then sell the oil to a recycler!
Student activity fees are the worst fees in college
I agree. It is unfair for customers pay an extra fee to selected their seat but the airline have been getting away with it because we've being paying for it. Just like the baggage fees nowadays. LOL
The bank paper fee starts to happen in the USA now too. It is up for grab and they can get away with it, that's why. There should be some law for excess fee from these corporate companies.
Want to become a real estate agent? your head will be spinning with the stupidest fees and mandatory charges
Holly crap Canada has some crazy fees.
There are far dumber fees than paper bill fees. I'd far rather get bills emailed than paper bills.
Use of Jaw Muscles to talk to customer: $20.00
Asking a question: $2.00

I live in the States, but I simply LOVE watching your channel! And it's nice to know that we have a lot in common with our northern cousins! Wish we had a Marketplace here. :-)
For the paper charge, I honestly don't understand what is wrong with viewing your statements online?
Luke Fowlie as long as you can access them online FOREVER. I wish they would have an option to email them.
It could be an accessibility issue? Like, for someone with no access or internet or a computer. 🤔
@@johnp139 ....just save it on the computer, to a cloud service, or on a flash drive
@@sabrina246ake When I worked for Rogers, we waived it for individuals that cannot access computers (ie. people with no computers or do not have the skills to operate one, old folks)... but yeah... I don't understand why its dumb to charge a paper fee... if you can view it online and save paper.
Paper bill is more detailed information. Also don't have computer.
I love seeing dumbfounded executives, when they get served a taste of their own BS. They have no clue besides saying it’s policy cuz the government allows it.
100% support not going to see Katy Perry especially since she owns Ticketmaster thanks to you... You go girl! That's the biggest " R O A R" since Katy Perrys song...
Love these shows. Good job keep them coming CBCMP.
The dumbest charge I've ever had was I could pay $2 to print my own concerts tickets at home on my own printer or email them to myself for free lol so I just got them emailed for free and then printed them. But I'm sure they get lots of people that way.
+Moses Yang Then why don't they send tons of emails with junk in them? Why send paper junk mail for free and, thus, waste money?
+lilie burdett they do both. Many people do not have a computer, smartphone or email.
I Think Mom is in love with Katie Perry.
Some of these charges make sense, these companies could not make money without them.
Lol. Which ones?
+Charles Murphy ............ATM, it does cost money to get the ATM fill up with money, need to make it done by security service, so i agree, not happy ? Open an account with TD and use there machine !!
So if you keep your money in bank A but withdraw it from bank B, you shouldn't have to pay a fee? Why should bank B have to pay for the maintenance without a profit?
DUH, okay sheeple.
They will raise the cost of Administrative costs and pass that along.
They will raise the cost of Administrative costs and pass that along.
Airline seat picking fees: If you let everyone pick their seats any amount of time in advance, you'd actually be WORSE off. If you wanted to fly out in 4 weeks, you'd be picking from whatever's left from people who bought months ago.
Atm fees are dumb. I just have one thing to say:
CO-OP ATMs FTW
I recommend Scandinavian airlines (SAS) or British airways (BA) because they have a policy to keep families next to each other especially SAS
Many times when I fly I ask if there is an exit row seat available because it has more leg room for me. Normally when I ask this at the airport, there usually is and they don't charge me a fee.
I haven't flown in almost 30 years and never plan to again.
It's all about the hypocrisy. The banks want to go paperless so much that they send you junk mail multiple times a month.
Banks....
NetRolller3D
Yes, hypocrisy, agree!
Some companies do charge those who want paper bills mailed to them..
You can avoid atm fees just get cash back at the grocery store.
Airline seat selection fees: I was really annoyed when I was on a flight that wouldn’t release seats at all, then they had to move people forward before taxiing due to weight/cg!!!
Skinny people should get a discount.
Skinny people should get a discount.
I'm not usually this violent in my thinking. But I think they should lop the head off that Banker association spokeswoman. To talk so forcefully about things that are so illogical, and are obviously just ways to nickel and dime customers, is abhorrent.
this is one of my favorite shows!
Bank fee portion: Move your bank.
Paying operators to stock the machine, maintain them etc isn't free
If you don't want to pay ATM fees switch to a credit union. I never pay ATM fees with my credit union.
me as well but this woman lives in such a dumb small place they probably don't even have any
All r outrageous but if u buy tickets together then they should be sat together that's horrible
At least the airlines are getting hit with a taste of this by having to pay extra for safety features on the Max 8!
Ambulance. $75 bucks when you call to save your life.
Kid at 14:29 though. Exactly the reaction I would have to some guy running through the streets shouting about paper.
I was with you up until the paper bill charge.
If you don't want to pay the fee, get it emailed to you and print it off. Simple!
85 cents to ship it across Canada, wear and tear on the printer, employee wages. That 2 dollars totally makes sense.
Esona they don’t email it, you have to go online and download them, but many places only keep the statements on line for like 2 years.
i know a dumb charge that needs to be looked at Hydro one's Delivery charge and debt recovery charges
It's not a service fee, it's ripped off fee
Im ok with paper charges. Stop using paper and sign up to eletronic billing.
No, Canada's dumbest charges are the 'Tourist Fees'.
Lisa use the bank in your town or pay to use the atm in your town .
I like how the interviewer is just throwing it all on the table no sugar coating filter, it's basically a roast at this point lol!
I can relate to the ticketmaster one lol
Here is a gem for you: we have a dog tax in Germany.
808Fee so does Canada. In some provinces also for cats🤬
@@evelinholmes6401 seriously? I had no idea. It's ridiculous. After all you gotta pick up after your dog. Maybe everyone should just leave "landmines" for that money until they get rid of that dumb tax. 😂 Cats? that's insane. The state is clearly overreaching.
Wow I live in the U.S. in Arizona. It costs me $2.50 to use the ATM and another $2.50 from my bank because I used a different banks ATM.
Ms. Delusional : Get a credit union account: No charge & you can use any other credit unions ATM and its free, completely FREE. Also NO monthly service charge PERIOD. Only 2 percentage point rates for cars loans : Used 4.75 New 4.25 Very LOW interest on credit cards discounts on many things 15% off of certain cell phone companies!!!
Or just go with a bank that has free ATMs in your area lol I got nothing against credit unions but they do the same thing as banks (for the average customer)
Y'all seem to be under the delusion that everybody has access to credit unions and banks with ATMs. I don't know where you live but good for you that you have choices.
@@daryaionesco2634 People do have those options, yes even you lol. Because there is at least one bank ATM near you lol. Also there is less and less a need for ATMs. Most of it can be done online so it's even easier for you to access.
Plenty of banks (in the US) have no ATM fees of their own and ATM fee reimbursement, at least up to a certain amount a month.
The word "fee" is a legal term for "extortion"! I hate them, and I don't live in Canada, I live in the UK.
if they don't like paying the charges just don't go to the concert. remember guys actions speak louder than words if you don't give your money to them they won't make any money and by doing this they will lower the charges simple as 1 2 3

The guy behind you is willing to fork over his cash...get outta the way.
I am a previous Bell employee. The touch tone fee is a mandatory fee and all phone companies charge it. Bell happens to show you the charge rather than have it as a hidden fee.
Changing banks is not a big deal like they make it seem......
lol nope and nowadays most banks have easy systems to transfer everything over.
Wait... we charge people a paper fee to keep costs low? In other words, we charge them so we don't have to charge them more? I am trying to find the logic.
I think 50 pence GBP/ 85 cents CAD is reasonable for paper charge!
Why can't that lady close her account and move it to the bank up this street. I have. I actually had serveral at one point
Unfair? How is it unfair to charge for sending a paper bank statement? check it online.
How is it difficult to change bank?its literally a few hours work!
The ATM fee makes sense, you are accessing your bank's funds that are held at another bank for your convenience. There's negotiations and lots of systems in place to set up and monitor this service, how do you think the other bank is able to confirm your card and pin, they designed systems and put them in place to do this.
thehALomolov2 it's free where I live. Why can't it be everywhere?
No fees at any bank in the UK
West Talks We have less fees than them. We don't pay tips. We don't pay extra for everything. And we don't pay for using any bank. Tbh I love Britain!
RULE BRITANNIA
You have to pay tips for everything, for food, for hotels, and even for using banks
GREAT show! We would NEVER see a Show *like this* in the U.S.!
don't argue atm fees go your bank atm for free charge.if your bank is far from where you live choose a bank who has more atm every where
I think the Ticketmaster charge is the worst. It’s also the most expensive fee at over $14 a pop
Don't use them. Stub hub works.
Don't use them. Stub hub works.
I think less than $7 CAN/ £4 GBP is reasonable for a seat selection!
Umad?
Ciaran 100 and you shouldn't being charged anything!
Last time I booked a flight on Porter they were charging $23 to select your seat in advance
Ciaran 100 that’s a lot cheaper than US carriers, and they don’t open up 24 hours prior to departure.
How to avoid ATM fees...every time you go to a large grocery store or department store, get cash back on debit. They don't charge anything extra. Also, you can change your bank account to allow a certain amount of ATM withdrawals for free, even if it's a different bank.
Screw Banks and screw Bell....I'm keeping my money elsewhere and never, ever will i go for Bell for any services.
Who still uses a home phone? Just get a cell phone and dump Bell.
1st world problems....
Why didn't Bell add a rotary phone charge? :D
We have similar issues with some ticket services in our country.
Please send them back their junk mail . When they get itback on a daily basis I’m thinking things are going to change!!
They include a postage free envelope to do so. Include some nude pics of babes on the internet so they can feel self conscious while opening it.
They include a postage free envelope to do so. Include some nude pics of babes on the internet so they can feel self conscious while opening it.
What people don't understand is that companies have to pay fees too and it costs these companies money to pay for their internet service, to keep their lights on, to pay someone to stuff the machines and fix jams. They're not dumb fees, they're fees that keep that service available to you.
Just get an account with TD in this case!!!

As a matter of fact I shop for groceries and everything else and I change accordingly to the prices and quality. I shop for quality and work my way down till I pay the price I want to pay. Economics rules.I have to eat and have a place to live. As long as I can save a little money I don't eat junk and always have a roof over my head. The dumbest charge of all is paying for a landline. Cancelled mine ten or fifteen years ago. Not only saved the $2.80 for touch tone, but also saved $24 a month in not paying the bill at all. Save $288/yr. for 10 years =$2880. That buys several nice cell phones.
with the flight one i just ask someone if they can trade seats with me so i can sit next to my wife. theyre usually cool about it.
+Tom Alexander Has anyone ever refused?
Alundaio i also did that whenever me, my mum and sister were unable to buy seats together. People are usually completely fine with it.
i know they chose a cheap flight and did not expict fees
Neat I'll keep that in mind. That seat picking charge just sounds ridiculous. I have motion sickness and sitting in the middle of planes instead of the side has helped greatly to prevent food from coming back out, and I can't imagine paying that charge just so I don't puke...
@@naritruwireve1381 And it's crazy to not pay the fee but then you get mad because others have gotten their seats before you nad you're forced with a middle seat. The charge IS for people like you who absolutely WANT to have a certain seat. Fine you want to chose you pay a fee. It helps lower the overall cost of tickets.
You guys are taking about $2.00 how weak. How about pharmacies who charge a $11-20 as a dispensing fee, your drug could cost $5.00 but you will still be required to pay the $11 to $20.
