- Hey everyone, meet our new ocean sunfish (also known as a Mola mola)!
Our aquarists have trained the mola to recognize a target so that it can be hand-fed in our Open Sea exhibit. This way, we can track how much it is eating, get a better sense of its health and make sure it doesn't have to compete with a fast tuna for a meal.
Right now, it is feeding on squid, shrimp and clam tongues, and it growing rapidly while eating 3% of weight in food every day! About the size of a large pizza, this mini-mola could grow to be massive-adult ocean sunfish are the largest bony fish in the world, the biggest of which weighed nearly 5,000 pounds (2.2 tons)!
See if you can spot this new ocean sunfish on our Open Sea Web Cam (it's especially visible during its 11AM and 3PM target feedings): mbayaq.co/SkpVDa
