      Same. So frustrating & ridiculous that right now I'm trying to buy 3 acres , wooded, 10 mins out of town & banks won't give loans for tiny homes. Have to have it considered an RV. So can't put it on a foundation. Smh.

    To approve an accessory dwelling is great for some, but it is only a very small piece of the greater issue at hand with a lack of homes. Many do not have relatives with property that could accommodate the addition of even a tiny house, or a desire to do so. The real housing problem is not enough units of all sorts: AFFORDABLE homes, apartments, manufactured or others.

    Create co-op organizations that work together to owner occupied properties at cost. If working class people assist each other, the problem could be solved. Habitat for Humanity has done it , so it can be done on larger scale.

      The subdivision was built for the purpose of being low-cost rentals for low-income people. Naturally, it's not going to be built in the best area of town. As long as the community owner isn't a slumlord and management maintains the community, it should stay nice.

    This is a nice start. Fixing all the derelict houses on the west and north sides would really, really help. Possibly less advertising in other cities and urging for people to get a "one way ticket to Jacksonville would help extremely. Enough gentrification. Let Jacksonville be affordable for residents first.

    • @haulingfuel4759

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum Рік тому

      There's a bit of conflict in your comment. Thought I agree on the surface, by fixing up places for rental or sale, the landlord or seller is gentrifying poor neighborhoods. Naturally, a fixed-up house is going to require a higher rent. Someone had to spend a lot of money to fix it up and they need to be able to slowly get their money back in rent payments.

    • @palebeachbum

      That's what I was hoping this was going to be. I suspect small homes like these are less profitable for the developer. Notice where developers are building new homes in Jacksonville and the cost of those new homes. They're definitely not catering to the working class or first-time homebuyer.

    • @AxxinTheSupernova
      @AxxinTheSupernova Рік тому +1

      @@palebeachbum And that's all it's about. The city needs to throw money at builders open to building the smaller houses, and build them.
      I have no interest in paying 300K+ for an 11k or 12k square footed house. I dont care where it is located. lol. Build smaller houses the size and cut of a large one bedroom apartment. This is about profit, or lack there of.

    See sounds like someone thought of over-pricing a tiny home, it's not for you to get rich. It's to help stop homelessness.

  • @palebeachbum
    @palebeachbum Рік тому +1

    Tiny homes are definitely not for everyone, but neither are the abundance of typical size 3 and 4 bedroom houses all over Jacksonville. Houses are not one-size-fits-all. When I moved to Jacksonville, I was surprised to see there are so many sub-1,000sqft 2 bedroom, 1 bath homes. I'm just not used to seeing that. Yet, there's clearly a need and desire for such small homes since they're all occupied either by owners or renters. I have no doubt that if Jacksonville allowed residents to build foundation-based tiny homes on their building lot and for developers to build tiny house communities, where residents own their own property, people would buy in. It's an excellent solution for first-time home buyers, allowing them to pay a mortgage off faster and built some equity to upgrade later if they desire. It's also a great solution for aging retirees who want their own home, but not the major hassle and expense of a bigger home. A condo alternative. I am very interested in it for myself and my mother likely would be as well. For the city to allow ADUs is a step forward in the right direction, but that only helps open up availability to the rental community and to accommodate aging family members. What about everyone else, such as single people like me, who simply want a more affordable living alternative that requires less upkeep?

      @@palebeachbum My comment is in favor of the city, and not a particular thought, as is yours. If Jacksonville starts to have this type of property, the value of the city of Jacksonville is going to drop, it's pretty easy to tell, just refer to the history books. Who may be interested in buying a property, where it is allowed for the neighbor next door, the one in front or the one behind, to start building small houses.
      This country became number one, for having had citizens with great ideas, these tiny houses, they are small ideas.

      @@palebeachbum You have your idea and I have mine. As a Jacksonville resident, Jacksonville is being ruined too much with a huge amount of 3 story buildings by stairs, made by the "developers" who of course will never go to live there. They are making neighborhoods without any privacy, wooden houses nailed next to the neighbor, where you can hear if they are cooking a hamburger or making scrambled eggs, if we are going to add to this that small houses are going to be built on the surface of a house , it's time to plant bananas and make a bow and arrow to get food, instead of going to Publix. Merry Christmas and goodbye

      I think you're alluding to slavery, but it's not the same. First, slave owners OWNED their slaves, and the slaves had no rights and could not leave at their will. Second, it's not uncommon already for very wealthy people to employ a housekeeper or nanny full-time who lives in their guest quarters/guest house in exchange for their services and salary.

    I'm in favor of the idea, in general, but there are issues to consider - overcrowding a property, etc.. one of the first issues that comes to mind is parking for all the vehicles of all the residents of all the new homes - this especially becomes problematic in urban settings where street parking (instead of driveways and garages) are the norm. If people can build a tiny home in their backyard - should they also be able to set up a 60 year old mobile home? What about a couple of rundown RV's?

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum Рік тому

      Valid concerns. In the case of this particular tiny house community, it's set up like a subdivision of individual homes. Keep in mind they are tiny and intended for 1 resident. So, it's a 1 car per house situation. They accommodate for that with parking spaces. Jacksonville already has regulations regarding placement of mobile homes and RVs. I'm not sure about the specifics of mobile homes, but RVs are not permitted for full-time living. It's legally considered a motor vehicle.
