One thing you failed to mention is the old fashion nostalgia ice cream maker has a better tasting ice cream overall. Much smoother, rich consistency, next time do a tasting comparisons.
We always made homemade ice cream on the 4th of July family gatherings--my aunt had a churn with an electric motor. The problem was they always made banana ice cream which I didn't like much. I have the old wooden bucket churn with a hand crank--the steel rings that hold it together rusted over the years but it still works. You really get a workout with it, but I guess after you burn all those calories you don't have to feel so guilty about eating ice cream! I like making ice cream in the Vitamix--it is so much easier and healthier because you make it with frozen fruit or frozen milk instead of heavy cream and eggs.
FYI The extra stuff on the gelato blade is because gelato has less fat than ice cream, so ice crystals form more easily, and those break up the ice crystals. And it's not the freon that needs to settle if a compressor is stored on it's side. It's the oil for the compressor motor. Running it too soon is like running your car without oil.
Thanks for such a thorough review, Amy. I have the Donvier ice cream maker. They were popular about 25 years ago, but I don't know if they're still available. It's the type where the cylinder gets frozen (similar to the one that you show for the Cuisinart model), and then there is a hand-crank system. It works OK, but I've heard that the old method with the rock salt is still the best method for a creamier product..
I think if I bought the wood bucket one I would put either a clear lacquer or a polyurethane finish over the wood to inhibit moisture getting into the wood which would help keep it from molding.
I've seen quite of few Cuisinart or Salton electric ice cream makers (the kind with a freezer bowl) in thrift stores. It was the round white older model but it's the same--so you can get one pretty cheap if you shop around. Sometimes you'll see just the freezer bowl so you could get an extra bowl, too. They were a popular wedding gift and some people just get rid of them after a while. The round one is actually smaller overall so it's better for storage.
Hi Amy & Eric!!! That video is very interesting. I have never made ice cream ever. I dont have a machine. Maybe one day I will buy one!!! Take care my dear friends!!!
I bought an old fashioned electric churn to make ice cream this summer... but no...i beach vacation sure to covid... but i'm going to make some peach ice cream this week...yum!
Nice video, I love ice cream. I know you can't review them all but I wish you would have included the Breville machine. Maybe some other time. Stay well and cook on! By the way, I liked your container gardening video, great bell peppers, good job.
None of those look like the one we used when I was a kid although that wood bucket looks like the closest. We had a plastic bucket and it had no motor as it had to be cranked by hand with a crank handle. Grandaddy always cranked it and set some towels over top of it and then had one of us kids sit atop the bucket on the towels while he cranked the handle. I guess we were the original "dead end" kids, lol.
I'm 56 and I remember when I was little we had a hand crank ice cream maker and I would have to sit on it while daddy turned the crank I had the coldest butt around
Learn how to make semifreddo. It's a little different then your typical ice cream but worth it.. But I have both a manual crank style and the KitchenAid attachment. My preference honestly is the manual. It takes a little longer, but I don't have to worry about remembering to freeze that canister. With the manual I just need ice, rocksalt and ice cream base... And if you have kids with you when you decide to use it they love to take over that job.. Only issue is I NEVER have any left over to firm up in the freezer. But learn to make the semifreddo.
Very informative about the compressor care in not storing it wrong. As the oil leaks out of the compressor. I never knew abut the ice cream containers! I am looking for a Kitchen Aid Ice cream maker that attaches to the Power Hub and comes with the hand crank too. And I would LOVE an old Hit or Miss motor Ice Cream Maker.
I have the freezer bowl type Cuisinard ice cream maker; I returned the first one and was sent the second one. Both have not worked. I did freeze the bowl over 24 hours, chilled the whipping cream ice cream recipe before putting it in the ice cream maker. After 50 minutes I still did not have ice cream. The liquid in the bowl was frozen as it did not slosh around, the bowl was extremely cold and did turn, so what is the problem? I thought the first one was just a fluke, but now the second one did the same thing.
Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. I have had pretty good luck with mine. Have you tried the compressor type? All of them give you soft serve consistency that you have to freeze.
Too much sugar in your base or too much alcohol - if you add some for flavoring can inhibit it from freezing or cause you to have a lot of crystals. How cold is your freezer, it should be between 0 to -10 farenheit.
I don't know what it is, but their seems to be a Ice cream maker shortage. All the none name brands like Ostler which is a cheap brand is selling on amazon for $400 All the Nostalgia ice cream makers are also going up in $$$. Same with all the other brands except the really cheap ones like Hamilton beach Von chef or Dash. Not that if you want something quick, those brands are great, but they won't last.
Try freezing the bowl upside down. It's help freeze the base more evenly. Also Refrigerate the ice cream mix prior to churning. Should come out soft serve scoopable but may be slightly melt. Freeze in air tight container for a couple hours to harden a bit more.
I love this vid but you should stick w/ just Amy talking. Because the person in the back ruins the video yelling things out drifting the attention to them.

I love the Cuisinart ice 100. Being able to do 3 icecream batches in one night instead of 3 days is amazing

it was really a comprehensive comparison among different options; stay blessed
Thanks for the video.
I need a 4 to 6 quart ice cream maker to replace my broken 4 quart White Mountain ice cream maker.

Wish you had the Kitchenaid ice cream bowl and did a video of it in action. Thank you for all the information.

Thanks Amy! Great video, thanks for sharing.
Kenwood and Cuisinart also make ice cream attachments for their mixers.
Can’t wait for the ice cream battle!

I have the kitchen aid attachment and only used it once . Now I want to try it again
Thanks!

Thanks. Now I know the differences.
Hi I have the cuisinart pure indulgence. Can I put the bowl in a deep freezer? Thank you 😊
I'm 56 and I remember when I was little we had a hand crank ice cream maker and I would have to sit on it while daddy turned the crank I had the coldest butt around
Thanks for the breakdown of the machines but seriously review channels should actually test out the product.
I have the Quisinart compressor ice cream maker.
How do you like it? Where did you get your recipes?
Can’t find the “ice cream maker” battle video (mentioned at the end of this video)!
You're good at science.

Would you please make sherbert too?
Eric that makes too much sense to put things into the freezer bowl in the freezer to make space. :-)
love it

Ever hear of hot waffles and ice cream?
I just got the middle one. It was $69 paid a total of $89
The one with the freezer bowl doesn’t work mine always melts before I get icecream .
