I don't know about other but these movies made me sick of Thorin and dwarves in general. Extremely ubiquitous and annoying.
Tia Aaron I agree with you. I disliked Thorin long before they reached Mirkwood. His character in the book isn’t any more endearing than in the movie. Thranduil was an interesting character with depth.
@@deborahmerkerson1145 At least in the book, Thorin is not constantly glorfied and the narrative is not ignorant of his mistakes unlike in these movies which constantly glorify and focus on him. i think this was a great writing mistake for the movie, there was plenty of opportunities to show the redemption and even more of a duality. it seemed it was ignored
They really needed these scenes. It really explained why Thranduil was so desperate to get the gems, and it wasn't out of greed or because they were heirlooms of his people. It's one of the only things he considered that his wife had left him when she died(with her body most likely left behind in Gundabad.)
Thranduil is my favorite kind of character, the one that has closed themselves off, but still have heart enough to realize their own mistakes, and correct them. He seems cold and alone, but hidden is a love so profound, that no mortal could understand.
I was so upset that they barely put Lord Thranduil in action in the movie; he was the one that I was excited to see. He is suppose to be this bad-ass Elvenking warrior who is an excellent swordsman and a successful leader, and they showed him fighting for like 15 seconds. Instead we got an overload of Legolas fighting, which we didn't need because we saw him in action in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. If they make a film based on Lord Thranduil, I would gladly go see it. Lee Pace did an excellent job of playing him.
+FunkyFresh Diva Tauriel got even more air time than Legolas though and I'm pissed off about that because she doesn't even exist in Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. And it seemed like the films were more about her than Thranduil
+6703445 You are absolutely correct about Tauriel. Her whole story line seemed forced and unnecessary. At least with Arwen it made sense to give her more of a story line than she had in the book since she would become the wife of Aragorn and she was also the daughter of Lord Elrond, but with Tauriel, there was absolutely no reason for her to be in the movie whatsoever!
+FunkyFresh Diva Unfortunately, if they did a movie about Thranduil, it would be 100% asspull. It wouldn't be a cannon Tolkien story, and it would seem like a cheap spin-off. Think "Scorpion King" in relation to "The Mummy".

The most frustrating thing about these movies is that hidden beneath all the terrible CGI and awful action sequences is a few decent films. These deleted character development scenes illustrate that perfectly.
There actually are informations about Thranduil's wife/ Legolas' mother. She was one of the Noldor and lost her life fighting the dragon from the north in Angmar. It's also in the line when Thranduil when he speaks to Thorin. It's all in unfinished tales written by J.R.R.Tolkien.
+Irena Holc I've read Unfinished Tales and I don't remember any of that. Pretty sure that was Peter Jackson and company's invented backstory for her. The books don't have any info about Thranduil's wife. I think it's more likely that she was one of the Sindar, the clan Thranduil and Legolas belonged to. But nothing is confirmed in the stories.
Then apparently you haven't read all of them. Unfinished tales and pieces are very difficult to find for most people. Well, if her mother was Mirwen, who was in Rivendell and was Noldor, then no. However, there is nothing about her father so who knows. But being a great smithsman, would mean he was Noldor not Vanyar.
Irena Holc I've definitely read Unfinished Tales and it wasn't in there. I haven't finished the History of Middle-earth series yet so maybe it's mentioned in there somewhere.

RiotOf TheWolves The non-cannon stuff really didn't bother me, as long as it was good and made sense (like this scene) What did bother me was the forced love story and the out of place LOTR tie ins like Thranduil mentioning Aragorn to Legolas.

The sad thing is, is that Thranduil's character was perfectly fine as Tolkien wrote it so there shouldn't have been any need for these epiphany moments - PJ and his team of writers mutilated the Elvenking beyond all recognition for the movies. Thranduil already was a kind and compassionate character (look at his concern for Bilbo's welfare and for the plight of the people of Laketown!) whose actions were understandable and justified, both in imprisoning the dwarves who would not identify themselves or give proper reason for roaming through his realm and also in taking an army to a mountain where both dragon and dwarves were said to be dead and which could easily become overrun with the enemy (as did the mines of Moria). Being situated so close to his own kingdom why would he (or any leader of a country) let a strong position such as the mountain remain unguarded and undefended? Added to this, Thranduil clearly stated in the book that he would rather wait an age before he would start a war over treasure - therefore it was not greed that motivated him but military strategy. Why PJ and his team felt the need to change his character so drastically I will never know - they could easily have kept the storyline about the dead wife without turning him into a cold-hearted monster. Also, that rubbish about the rift between father and son causing Legolas to go away and this then leads to LOTR - the Council of Elrond takes place in 3018 (77 years after BOTFA) and Legolas is sent by Thranduil to that meeting (meaning he was with his father when Gollum escaped after Aragorn delivered him to the Elves). It's quite obvious these movies should come with a warning: "loosely inspired by the novels of JRR Tolkien." They couldn't even get the timeline right - Aragorn was 10years old at the time of the Hobbit and he didn't even learn his true name and start roaming about as a ranger until 2951 - ten years after the events of the Hobbit! PJ might have given us an aesthetically pleasing movie - the scenery, costumes and casting were all wonderful - but he destroyed the inner beauty of characters for the sake of creating plot devices that were unnecessary and tedious. I would much preferred to have seen Bilbo getting lost in Thranduil's halls for days whilst ducking the singing elf-guards and seeing Thranduil lay Orcrist on Thorin's tomb, along with my favourite scene of Thranduil receiving the necklace from Bilbo, than watching the contrived love angst created by PJ's mary sue character Tauriel, Alfred's cowardly antics and boring face-off fights that dragged on (Thorin & Azog!!!!). It is such a shame that after the LOTR movies (which while still flawed held mostly true to Tolkien's work) PJ and his team of so-called experts basically destroyed the original story and characters for the sake of putting in modern-movie gimmicks and soap opera plot-lines. I would say to anyone who has only watched these movies - do yourself a favour and read the actual book. Whether you prefer elves, dwarves or men (or little hobbits!) you will not be disappointed for they all have their own charm. The only characters to hate are the goblins.
I hate what they did to the book. I only watched the first part, once I realized they butchered it entirely, I refrained from watching the other films. They should have made an entirely independent movie imo. Nothing sucks more than to alter a book so much only the names of the characters remain the same.
The first time we saw Aragorn "Strider" sitting in that corner, with that hood, those whiskers, just watching, we were like, "Uh...Oliver Queen?" Of course we knew it couldn't be, but it reminded us so much of the Green Arrow.
Would be so cool if they released new versions of LoTR with scenes with Thranduil. Maybe even depart from the story in order amend the character of Tauriel who was just left hanging... maybe we see her die on the way to Rivendell and the Council of Elrond, or at least hear her spoken about and what happened to her.
+sanch Sanchayan I didn't mind the LoTR forshadowing in The Hobbit. They did say they were gonna approach it as a prequel to LoTR, and that's what they did. What I DO blame her for is the humanization of Thorin and Kili. They looked too human, and they were made that way because she wanted them to be more sexy. I didn't mind that Thorin was in his prime age instead of an old man like in the book. But when he looks more like a Man of Gondor rather than a Dwarf of Erebor, that's when they went overboard. Kili they totally botched. Slim build, no beard, and a tiny nose. Only a 6yo Dwarf would look like that! But it was all so that Boyens could have her ridiculous little romance betwen Kili and Tauriel. If Boyens actually read some Tolkien, she would understand that love between an Elf and a Dwarf is fundamentally impossible because of how the two races came to be. Dwarves and Elves are like oil and water. They tolerate each other, but can never mix. PJ should have put his foot down and not let P. Boyens run rampant with the screenplay.
The mental thinking behind the hobbit script is flawed. All foreshadowing elements in prequels are flawed . They should have learned from the SW prequels
Finally I'm reading a smart opinion. Mrs Boyens did a really shitty job as writer/producer IMO. She is responsible for the lame dialogues, the hilarious love triangles, the unnecessary and a bit ridiculous characters of this trilogy. I enjoyed the Lotr movies (although some parts are boring as well) but The Hobbit truly sucked and the massive use of CGI has nothing to do with that: these three movies are simply stupid. I am not even a Tolkien fan, but I completely understand Tolkien family's decision to block the Silmarillion copyrights.
The one scene here that they actually used in the movie was the one they shouldn't have. Mentioning Aragorn as Strider was stupid, that LOTR mention made no sense at all.
No, not in the movie, but in extras - The Appendices: Part Twelve - Here at Journey's End (disc 3), The Peoples and Denizens of Middle-earth" Documentary, Thranduil: King of Wood and Stone
It's a beautiful story that wasn't told. All things considered, sorry guys, I understand it's full of feels and all and that the movie strains to some extent from the source material, but that's no excuse to skew it off entirely. You can't simply add a story that concerns the mother of one of the main characters and the queen of one of the Elf Kings without it being conceived in the source material. It wouldn't have been better than adding another script about a yonger Legolas' dead brother gift, or adding a plot line about Gimli's mother nor some other feeling fused script that could potentialy derail the motives of a main character in a different direction.
Ok now i totally understand when Lee said in an interview that his last scene with legolas in TBFA was the most memorable one for him. Jeez and I've been wondering why Thranduil's a jerk & wanted those diamonds badly.
I'm sorry but Aragorn/Estel was 10 years old at the time of the battle so how on earth would Thranduil even know he existed. I mean he lived incognito for the first part of his life. Also I don't think a 10 year old would be known as Strider. What an uneducated piece of writing.
+Ghostlord Aragorn II was born March 1, 2931 T.A; the Battle of the Five Armies took place in 2941. Also it was not 60 years as the Fellowship left Rivendell in 3018 T.A. Please learn facts before you call people out. I mean he didn't even know his own name until 2952.
It really bothers me that the cast and crew weren't as thorough with the pronunciation of the character names in The Hobbit as they were in LoTR. Several times in the movies I hear "GanDOLF", "TAW-riel" and "Than-drill". I wouldn't be surprised if they said "Saw-ron" too! FFS how hard could it be? GandALF, tAu-riel, THRAN-duil!...
I enjoyed a lot of the extra stuff in The Hobbit films (radagast, the white council in Gol Dulgur etc.) but I feel PJ and Co. went overboard w/ Thranduil, and are kind of guilty of short-shrifting what's actually in the text to justify their romantic notions about their elven King. Here (in the video) we're told that Thranduil repelled Sauron's forces alone in the War of the Ring, while Tolkien says little about the elves of the North, which was held by an alliance of Wood-elves, the Lakemen and the dwarves under the mountain (King Dain). So Kings Dain, Bard and Thranduil were able to forge an enduring alliance, but one never gets the sense in any of the books that Thranduil ever ceases to be prickly and difficult to deal with. He remains a cold and lonely figure, though not unwise or foolish in his politics. A big part of the story is that Bard's son, Brand, goes to live with Dain and then with the wood-elves - so my understanding has always been that the Kings of Dale were the key figures bridging the conflict between the dwarves and the wood-elves and "making the north work". Dain develops strong ties with the men of Dale, and dies in the War of the Ring defending a fallen Brand at the gates of Erebor. That relationship is at the heart of the Northern alliance in the War of the Ring, not the elven side of it. Bard's son, Brand, would - I think - be the protagonist in any story of the North in the War of the Ring -- certainly not Thranduil.
When Thranduil tells Legolas go find STRIDER,,i mean come on,!!!! Hobbit it 60 years before LOTR! Hence Aragorn in human he should have been more than 60 y/o in LOTR! This scene makes absolutely no sense!!!!
+pilepeen haha.. i have watched lotr like 20/times..never knew that about Strider!! thnx anyway...as much as i love these..i never had the chance and the money to buy the book!! i am like a jrr tolkien addict fan. love all the movies..
In the books, Denethor is a year older than Aragorn; he also has Numenorean blood. Faramir lives another 80 years or so after LOTR; Aragorn lives 120 more years (passing away at his own will at the age of 210).
The scene with Gandalf talking to Thranduil about his wife and the jewels is actually in the extended version of the film. So I'm not sure what you all are so butt hurt about? 🙄 I am a HUGE Thranduil fan btw and absolutely agree he needed more screen time than he got. But many of these scenes are added in the extended edition of the film.

THEY CUT OFF THE EXPLANATION FROM THE MOVIE RIP
These chops should read the book.
My2Cents That would be awful
@5:12 what scene is that? I don't remember it
does anyone know where the scene at 5:12 came from ?

Philipa Boyens is the main culprit . Overconfident and arrogant lady .. She is one responsible for foreshadowing every scene of the LOTR in Hobbit
+sanch Sanchayan
I didn't mind the LoTR forshadowing in The Hobbit.
+Rakenson especially since Aragorn is like 9 years old during the events of the Hobbit.
1:00 What does he say?
Sorry I'm 4 months late but to me it sounds like "I want it retrieved."
Rein It's never late ☺️ Thank you 🖖🏽
Should have been more Thranduil and less of that damned artifical love story between Miss Madeup and the dwarf.
He has the eyes of Zac Efron
Were the deleted scenes in the extended version of the Hobbit, of there is one?
No, not in the movie, but in extras - The Appendices: Part Twelve - Here at Journey's End (disc 3), The Peoples and Denizens of Middle-earth" Documentary, Thranduil: King of Wood and Stone
LadyofValimar Okay, thanks!
was that last shot of thranduil in the movie? Were was he?
Czemu nie dałeś polskich napisów? __ byłoby o wiele wygodniej__ popraw ten materiał.
Anyone thinks Thranduil is a minor villain in the film kind of like how King Triton is the minor villain in the Little Mermaid?
I'm sorry but Aragorn/Estel was 10 years old at the time of the battle so how on earth would Thranduil even know he existed. I mean he lived incognito for the first part of his life. Also I don't think a 10 year old would be known as Strider. What an uneducated piece of writing.
he was actually 27. in the LoTR Aragorn is 87, the Hobbit was 60 years earlier therefore Aragorn was 27
In LOTR he says himself that he's 87... I know right 😳
+Ghostlord Aragorn II was born March 1, 2931 T.A; the Battle of the Five Armies took place in 2941. Also it was not 60 years as the Fellowship left Rivendell in 3018 T.A. Please learn facts before you call people out. I mean he didn't even know his own name until 2952.
+Heather S So.... agreeing with me?
Book canon and movie canon are completely different. In the movies, Aragorn is 27 at the time of BOFTA.
no i Gruby Legolas
Мне очень нравится властелин колец
I knew Nicholas Cage had a twin.
+My2Cents I think only Thorin pronounced Thranduil's name correctly. With Galadriel in Lotr, I hear Saw-ron lol
"AY, in the BUKES thay's nay meenshun ov Legoloss's mutha, so we just pooled it out our ARSES!"
Fuckin Kiwi's.
When Thranduil tells Legolas go find STRIDER,,i mean come on,!!!! Hobbit it 60 years before LOTR! Hence Aragorn in human he should have been more than 60 y/o in LOTR! This scene makes absolutely no sense!!!!
+Dudin Sali Aragorn is 87 years old in LOTR. He is a decendant of Numenor blessed with long life and can live up to 200-300 years old.
+pilepeen wow
.thanks..never knew that..i keep discovering and rediscovering things..:)
Dudin Sali
If you want to discover some more, watch the extended LOTR and hobbit movies ;)
+pilepeen haha.. i have watched lotr like 20/times..never knew that about Strider!! thnx anyway...as much as i love these..i never had the chance and the money to buy the book!! i am like a jrr tolkien addict fan. love all the movies..
In the books, Denethor is a year older than Aragorn; he also has Numenorean blood. Faramir lives another 80 years or so after LOTR; Aragorn lives 120 more years (passing away at his own will at the age of 210).
I thought he had a husband ... Or she ... I am so confused
me too
The scene with Gandalf talking to Thranduil about his wife and the jewels is actually in the extended version of the film. So I'm not sure what you all are so butt hurt about? 🙄 I am a HUGE Thranduil fan btw and absolutely agree he needed more screen time than he got. But many of these scenes are added in the extended edition of the film.
