      Many of us spend as much on the panel as we do on the acquisition of the plane…. I’m in that club. That being said I’m in full agreement that to do that in a Cessna 150 is kind of nuts… unless it’s intended to be an IFR trainer. I can’t imagine anyone would really consider a 150 for a legit IFR traveling aircraft.

    Excellent video. I am in the process of putting 275 AI and HSI units in my Turbo Arrow which has has the GTN750 since they first came out. I have pages of notes from watching your video that I will use for my post-install testing and training to assure comfort before getting in the soup. Love that you reviewed the interactions between the units so clearly.

    Thanks for this video. I’m getting two GI 275’s installed in my B36TC and I’ve been searching all over for someone to show me how the knob and touch screen work together. You covered it for me. Now I’ll be more prepared to fly my baby home from the avionics shop next week. Thank you!

      @@mattolmstead6150 They’re awesome! I love that they keep the retro look of the panel. They have beautiful screens and are very easy to learn to use. I also love that they replaced my autopilot annunciator panel as the annunciators are right on the AI. We lost about 40 lbs by removing our faulty vacuum system. The database downloads via WiFi from the 275 and Garmin pilot are very easy to do. One thing I didn’t realize is that you cant receive traffic targets on them with a portable ADS-B in device. You have to have compatible equipment for that feature. But that’s what the iPad does for us. I also recommend getting the Garmin USB port along with it for major uploads or software troubleshooting.

    12:39 "Twice the value of the aircraft" - That's exactly what I was thinking when I was watching this review. I'm not knocking it, do what makes ya happy! Wish I could afford that setup! Neat to see the 6 pack replaced with 2 Gi-275's though, it really cleans that panel up.

    Sweet panel. Kewl Beans. 90% of my training (back in the day) was in the 150s ... the rest of my time was sprinkled among the Cherokee 140, 160, the Arrow, the Archer, the Warrior, the 172 and a 1947 V Bonanza. Also, got my multi in a decrepit Piper Apache.

    Well, I think the panel looks great and if you like it then it doesn't matter how much is put into the aircraft. Having said that, would you care to share the cost of such a project, hardware needed plus typical installation. Additionally it looks like the only autopilot a cessna 150/152 can have is an STEC-50. Woiuld the STEC-50 integrate with the GI 275's? What a great way to get hundreds of hours of actual IFR practice and real world in before moving into something more complex, etc.

    Curious why not a G3X + optional EIS module ($12,800 total + install cost) and backup G5 ($2300 + install cost) instead of 275 Attitude ($4000 + install), 275 HSI ($4300 + install) and EIS ($4600 + install)? There is only $2200 difference for the raw hardware (not including installation) between them, but the G3X can do it all on a larger screen. Was the install cost for a G3X prohibitive? Or maybe the G3X wouldn't fit on the panel. I'm genuinely curious. Loved the video. Great setup!

    • @RMAG
      @RMAG  3 роки тому

      A JPI 930 gives you a much larger screen with all the info at once. To try to cram all that into a standard round gauge would be too much. So the most important stuff is put in the main page and supporting/secondary stuff on other pages. It works.

    I know this doesn't apply to the trainer your in but the concern i have on the 275 vs the G5 is the back battery. Thoughts?

    • @RMAG
      @RMAG  3 роки тому +3

      What’s the concern? The G5 has a longer battery time than the GI 275. But if your running on battery that means you’ve had a complete electrical failure. Normally if you are having a complete electrical failure you lost an alternator, you turn off non-essential, equipment, declare an emergency, and land. If your main battery gets so low that your avionics completely turn off and you’re running on the GI 275 battery you still have an hour or so to get to the ground. If this all happened in IMC and you stayed flying long enough to drain your main battery, and drain your GI 275 battery, you severely mismanaged the emergency.

    Can you comment on the regs for this install? I wanted to get rid of all my analog gauges and replace w/ G5s and GI 275, however, we ran into an interpretation where the ASI and Altimeter could not be replaced solely with these units.

    • @RMAG
      @RMAG  3 роки тому

      This interpretation is correct for a G5.
      The installation of the G5 requires the retention of the mechanical airspeed indicator,
      altimeter, and vertical speed indicator.
      • For installations in aircraft approved for IFR operations:
      • If the G5 is installed as the primary attitude indicator, the existing rate of turn
      indicator must be retained.
      • If the G5 is installed as the rate of turn indicator, the existing primary attitude
      indicator must be retained.
      • For installations in aircraft approved for VFR-only operations;
      • The G5 can be installed as the attitude indicator and rate of turn indicator without
      retention of either the existing attitude indicator or rate of turn indicator.
      The GI-275 does not have these limitations if you use two ADAHRS with battery backup versions. Have your installer read page 1-31 of the GI 275 install manual

    I want to see what you do when your Solid and yo loose an alternator with your GLASS. My very first for real IFR flight after just getting My Instrument ticket I had to go Needle Ball and Airspeed for real when Making a turn in the clouds and the Vacuum Horizon takes a Crap. No Problem I was most proficient in Needled, Ball, & AirSpeed as I had just taken my Instrument Checkride. How Proficient are you at flying/Navigating with 2 half size steam gages in the lower part of the panel when all electric power is lost. It happens in older planes that have upgraded Glass Panels installed with that increased electrical draw on a 50 year old system.

    • @RMAG
      @RMAG  3 роки тому

      If you lose an alternator you get a low voltage warning. You cycle the alternator, if it does not come back you immediately declare an emergency, fly to VFR conditions if practicable, or shoot an approach to the closest airport. If your alternator fails, you still have your primary battery, if that gets too low these instruments all have their own backup batteries that will give you an hour to get on the ground. Fortunately with these electric gauges you can’t have a vacuum horizon take a crap as the vacuum system is eliminated. No idea about half size steam gauges, we don’t have any. We have all new wiring, new battery, alternator, etc, no 50 year old electric system.

      Why would I hate it? I never hate flying a plane. This one is nostalgic as I learned in one.

    Ugh Why do I feel Garmin is going in the wrong direction with the newest products... I have flown behind a lot of Garmin in the last 15 years... currently GTN, 396, 33X, GDL, Etc..... the 275 EIS appears nearly unreadable... add to that that EGTs are configured on the second screen and I just shake my head. Minimalist is great.. but from a human factor perspective, not having the peripheral vision to something as costly (and deadly) as EGT just stinks. Garmin developers need to fly more old aluminum and less carbon. And they need to do it in moderate turbulence. I want to get rid of my vac pump but the cost (in all senses of the word) is not overcome with this product. The EI and JPI products are more relevant to the average pilot. I an dumb it down... on a steep climb on a hot day in heavy weather and lots of radio work I glance at my EGT to keep me safe. If I need to scroll to the second screen, process the number coming at me... it simply won't happen with the regularity needed to prevent cooking a cylinder. Oh and in the bumps as an aging pilot... the letters are just tooooo small.

      It has the max CHT on the main EIS page which is what you want to watch for temp. EGT is mostly used for leaning. This is no different than the G500 TXi. Shows max CHT for temp monitoring and you can access further engine data one button away.

    Nice panel but cannot understand putting that kind of money in a Cessna 150.

      Why not ? Cessna 150 is a very affordable and low cost to use and maintenance, and this kind of avionic can allow to train/fly in IFR in a budget plane.

      its at least a 15K setup, so why put all this in a cessna 152, I'd rather put it in a four seat aircraft with better range and speeds.

      It’s a used GTN 750, but I think when we go to sell the plane we will probably pull the 750 and put something cheaper in.
