On this day, in the Olympic finals in a race requiring both speed and endurance, Pekka Vasala was simply the best. Many great runners, with long careers never win a gold medal.
Yksi kisan ratkaisuhetki, josta Vasala mainitsee myös kirjassaan Mitalin toinen puoli, on noin ajassa 1:07. Keino on siirtynyt kärkeen ja Boit yrittää tehdä siiven Vasalalle auttaakseen maanmiestään karkuun. Vasala kuitenkin tuuppaa hänet kylmästi sivuun ja ryntää Keinon perään. Juuri oikeanlaista röyhkeyttä jota keskimatkkoilla vaaditaan. Notice the moment at 1:07. Boit tries to block Vasala to help Keino get away, but the Finn refuses to be bullied and just brushes him aside
the best part of this is the commentary. There are some legendary commentaries throughout the history of mens track, but the Finnish guy screaming "PEKKA VASALA VOITTAA!" is pure gold
Todennäköisesti Jim Ryanin tuolloinen ME 3.33,1 olisi ollut vaarassa. Vasalan juoksutekniikka on kyllä ehdottomasti hienoimpia mitä olen nähnyt, heti Juantorenan ja Rudishan jälkeen hienointa keski- tai pitkien matkojen askellusta.
The sustained finish of this race was absolutely ferocious. Vasala showed his 1:44.5 800m capacity. Vasala was clearly the world's best runner over 1500m at this time, Ryun's fall in qualifying notwithstanding.
Vasala ran intelligently and kept watching Keino. He was unable to return to this form in 1973 or 1974, but better one Olympic gold than none. His running career was much shorter than those of Dixon, Boit and Foster, but they never won an Olympic gold. Keino fought bravely, but this time he couldn't win. Denmark's Hansen finished dead last, but in the 1974 European Championships he came second. Wellman still waited for his 1976 peak.

@62liimis As i recall, they ran the last 800 in 1.48.8. It isn't always the final time that counts, it's the contest itself, and who cracks last before the finish. This should be what Olympic racing is about. Many world records are set in pacemaking exhibitions which are, in themselves, lousy contests.
At least he ran European record in 800m, 1.44,5, in a solo run earlier in 1972. (WR was 1.44,3). Hence he was in a very good condition in 1972, and might also have won 800m, had he participated. Otherwise, see Pineforest's comment.

And I forgot the Arthur Lydiard connection. Vasala's coach had acquired some program from Lydiard during Lydiard's stay in Finland, although it wasn't the only part of his training program. Didn't Lydiard himself ID Vasala as a future Olympic medal prospect after his 1968 Olympic appearance in the first round heat of the 1500?
