"You are soft, like all Time Lords." Davros had evidently not met the Master, yet... or the Rani... or Omega... or Rassilon... or Borusa...
The Master going against the Daleks would be interesting.
Well he's still right, with the exception of the master the time lords like to observe things and view the universe as decadent god like beings, davros is right to say they live a life that is too soft and distinct from proper races in the universe.

The Master worked with the Daleks in Frontier in Space. That was pre-Davros, obviously.
I like the theory that the Fifth and Sixth Doctors end up with each other's ideal personalities. Five, on the surface, is a kind-hearted gentlemanly chap, who at the core is actually quite an aggressive and snappish person when the situation demands it. Six, on the other hand, appears as an arrogant grump on the surface whilst secretly hiding a heart of gold. This scene sums it up perfectly - Five is, to this day, the only Doctor to hold Davros at gunpoint
The Twelfth Doctor has held Davros at gunpoint, while “commandeering” his chair. I think the difference is that Twelve was making idle threats, whereas Five was fully intending to pull the trigger.
Six also briefly held Davros at gunpoint with a shotgun in one of the audios but Davros laughed because they both knew it was an empty threat, especially after their previous meeting
@@EditedAF987 I love that scene because he doesn't shoot Davros but he does shoot Davros' communication machine which prevents him from completing his plan. Imagining the Sixth Doctor blasting a console with a shotgun always brings a smile to my face
This theory not only makes sense but actually fits with one I always had that the regenerations of the Doctor are affects by his emotional state and the arc he goes through each season. In the case of the Fifth, most of his story took a very dark turn with him experice loss like Adric which continue through the sixth. His arrogance could be his way of dealing with this tragedies, denying his mistakes and try to avoid being so close to others, not wanting to go through the same suffering again. When he saw Peri being killed, the Doctor was probably having flashbacks of Adric going through his mind. It's after confronting Valeyard (which was said to be a amalgamation of doctor dark side of his personality) that sixth start to overcome this depression leading to the seventh Doctor, more cunning strategic mastermind. Looking that way, the Fifth to the Seventh Doctor arc is huge story about Doctor fall (5th), redemption (6th) and rebirth (7th).

This story is seriously underrated.
Somebody once made me laugh by saying the problem with Resurrection of the Daleks is that Eric Saward kept running out of plots that went nowhere and kept adding more.
Matt Maloney Yeah, but even he admitted that he should have streamlined some things in resurrection of the daleks.
harrietamidala1691 I've always thought Resurrection had the makings of a classic and had a great atmosphere but just lacked the focus required to make a classic along the lines of Evil of the Daleks or Genesis. As with several Saward stories, the Doctor himself is relegated to a less important status in the story than several of the supporting characters.

I think the scariest thing about this entire scene is that for most of this scene The Doctor spends it with the gun pointed at Davros. 5 was The Doctor's kindest incarnation and this just shows how at this point things keep getting darker and darker for him. What with Adric's death, leaving a seabase full of bodies and then Tegan's departure at the end of this episode. Then afters you have him kill Kamelion, seemingly kill The Master and then he and Peri get poisoned. Such a shame that he went in such depressing circumstances.
Oh, hells yeah! lol
...this is why Five is one of my fave Doctors...he has a profound character development...he starts as nice, kind, and meek then as the body count mounts during his tenure and it gets darker you can see him really change...that is one of the reasons why Caves of Androzani is arguably one of the best episodes in the cannon...after all the death around him he is determined to save Peri, even if it costs him his life...it isn't a shame, he 'died' in one of the noblest causes of all, to save another life and friendship...
But that's why Davidson's tenure is so remembered--they weren't afraid to go there with the death and mayhem. He was indeed the kindest and sweetest of all of the Doctors, even more so than Tennant or Smith but the horrors of what he went through finally took their toll on him as evidenced by his final story, The Caves of Andronzani. If anything, they made the Doctor a pure innocent who loses all of that throughout his life and ends up too well experienced and troubled beyond measure.
Fair enough. Personally I think that he could have done with some better scripts that allowed him to stick out a bit more but I liked his Doctor on the whole :)
+SCARE THE WEANS You make some excellent points and analysis. I just hope today's Doctor doesn't get bogged down in political correctness and just concentrates on doing a good story. The show needs stability and consistent quality of scripts. I think the main actor/Doctor should stay around for more then just 3 years. They should get someone good and stick with him for a while.
The Doctor, a gun, Davros. Well, here we go again.

He's still too young, and has too much hope. Every Doctor after War probably pulls that trigger before Davros starts talking.
But he didn't kill him in The Witch's Familiar
The point is that no matter what he has done or will do, Davros, at his core, is just an old cripple. Few people have the... steel will to kill such a man in cold blood.
The Doctor shot plenty of people in classic Who
By far my favourite Davros. Terry Malloy made the role his own, far more than any other actor.
Thr best Davros was the original Michael Wisher. Molloy was a pale version.
But Molloy is still far better than the latest version and has done a great job on various big finish audios never understood why he wasn't used for the new series cause all Julian Bleach does is do a Molloy impersonation

This story is absolutely brilliant and unequivocally dark and bleak. But Doctor Who is at its very best and is truly great when it puts the whole children's show routine in its rear view mirror and decides to pull no punches whatsoever. I love Tegan's final words to the Doctor in this episode as she departs for the final time (paraphrasing here), "it's not fun anymore. Too many good people died."
As companion departures go (although she did return for that Jim’s Fix It mini episode alongside Colin Baker) this is the best. Usually companions (the ones that aren’t killed off somehow) have some silly reason for leaving the TARDIS, e.g. a wanting to return home, Doctor’s wants them to leave, helping an alien species or falling in love with a character. Tegan’s reason is more emotional.
"I wouldn't know what to do with an army," he says after commanding the mercs to take care of the enemy outside. He has the capacity to lead an army though. The 5th was a very idealistic pacifist sure but if he ever snapped he might become the most frightening of all the doctors. Luckily he's made of stronger stuff than that.
I don't think so, he basically sacrificed himself to save Peri. And I mean, sacrificed for real. He didn't know if he would regenerate or not. As far as he was concerned, he would be dead dead for good if he gave the only antidote to Peri but he did it anyway.
Though I can understand where you're coming from, that cliffhanger to crash the ship into the planet below. I think that was just a bluff to keep the criminals from coming after him.
I think he's talking about if he had an army that he's officially in charge of, not just giving one group of people an order or two.

Ressurrection of the Daleks is my favorite Peter Davison episode and best Dalek episode.
I've always felt that the endless deaths, nonsense plot, dull characters and silly hats made this one of the worst Dalek stories of all time, but ok!

How can anyone say this when Genesis of the Daleks exists?
pyridian To be fair I don’t really consider Genesis of the Daleks to be a Dalek story exactly. I think of it as a Davros story. The Daleks really aren’t the stars of Genesis, whereas they have a much stronger presence in Resurrection of the Daleks.

If I had one. I would use it to become protectors of peace. If I created them I would create them to be a hive race that clone themselves using plant based methods. We would build a civilisation that would only protect a planet if the leaders give approval to. We would assist mostly low level planets who are struggling and would stay out of wars unless we are the ones who are being attacked.

This is one seriously underrated Dalek story. I really enjoy it. Eric Saward said he thought it was bad, but I disagree. I think this is much better than Revelation of the Daleks!

I love Revelation just as much, as it had such an atmosphere and characters, and the concept of either being turned into a Dalek or food for your relatives is SOOOO disturbing!
It's a great story but I find it really hard to get over the dildo helmets of the human dalek guards
I don't care what anyone says, I love Resurrection and this scene is brilliant. I have watched it over and over. Amazingly dark and tense story.

Terry Malloy is the only actor who I think makes Davros a big villain.
Even more than Michael Wisher? To me, they are both stellar actors that make him so much more than just a mad, ranting, humorless villain.
The Whovian Wisher was best for me but Malloys version was absolutely correct as well. People forget Davros was frozen in ice but entirely conscious for years, turning him into an angry psyco as he went mad. Its all continuity friendly :)
Yeah, they are both magnificent in the role. I also like David Gooderson, but he just doesn't have the screen presence of Wisher and Molloy.
The Whovian Gooderson had the toughest challenge of all. His voice wasn't modulated and Wishers mask didn't fit him so people forget his performance. Julian Bleach is a great blend of the Wisher and Malloy
I agree that Gooderson had the toughest challenge playing the character, and because of the production he isn't as memorable. What makes him a great Davros is that he overcame these things and still gave a terrific performance.
I forgot or never noticed before how good Davison is in this scene...
An interesting discussion between the adversaries
How Peter Davison trembles when Davros says that Timelords prefer to watch, lacking courage. Utterly sublime.
Davison is a brilliantly understated actor. On the surface he was one of the more placid Doctors, but if you watch him closely, you can always be sure to see a treasure trove of emotional reactions.
Such quiet scenes of discussion are missing from the new series, I feel so anyway...

Despite its flaws, I give Resurrection a thumbs up. The story has its issues but it also has many fantastic moments like this scene.
Resurrection of the Daleks is a superb story. Lots to recommend - e.g. Daleks, atmospheric Wapping location filming (mid-80’s when it was run down, long before gentrification), Lytton (brilliant performance from Maurice Colbourne), a more darker story theme and the beautiful Janet Fielding in a tight miniskirt!
Wonderful wonderful script......and I say again.....how refreshing to hear some dramatic dialogue without tiresome over-dramatic and loud background music ruining the scene (as in current series).

Davros is an inter-galactic bigot.
I assume once the Daleks became an inter galactic empire he researched the Time Lords and everything else from all the data collected over the years. Time travel and all that.
I'm sure he did, like a timelord Wikipedia on all the different races.
I agree, since being awakened on Skaro and his eventual imprisonment, Davros hasn't set foot on another planet, let alone moved at liberty upon non-Dalek soil. As far as he knows, the confines of the universe are still as inconceivable as they were during the Kaled war. In addition, he has never once seen or referred to knowing about the TARDIS.
However, there is a possible explanation for this:
Perhaps during his 'download' from the computer sphere in _Destiny of the Daleks_ , he learnt of the Time Lords and other races, including Earth.
Hence why he is able to give such an informed (albeit typical) description of Time Lord philosophy as well as consider the possibilities available to him by capturing the Doctor's TARDIS.

0:51 - funny thing, after all the dark things the various Doctors have done, Five *really* is the only one I can imagine going through with it... ... ... even Ten was too scarred - too damaged - to do it - but Five's veneer of gentleness and civility kept him distant - kept him separated enough - to do what most of the Doctors probably couldn't
Hell, when Adric was trapped and his companions endangered, Five was willing to *shoot* the Cybercommander

@@LukSter18998 Yes, the actor (Leslie Grantham) murdered a taxi driver before he became an actor on his release from prison. He was helped by Louise Jameson (Leela) - helped in getting into acting not murdering the cab driver.

I like that that davros isn't wrong.
Rodney Bewes as one of the guards, was a very nice actor, most memorable as one of the Likely Lads. Peter Davidson played the role in his very likeable way. For me he was one of the better ones just behind Pertwee and Tom Baker.
Bewes didn’t get much acting work after Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads. This was one of the rare bit-parts. He sort of drifted along for years afterwards in a state of resentment and bitterness. He fabricated a narrative that James Bolam stopped speaking to him (which Bolam denied in an interview with BBC Radio Sussex after Bewes passed away) and prevented the BBC from repeating The Likely Lads and Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads - again, incorrect. He didn’t get much acting work and blamed Bolam for his career going down the Daleks time corridor.
I love on the origional release of this story davros actually says "welcome doc-or"

I love Davros, he needed absolutely no updates for the new series, unlike the Daleks themselves and others like the Cybermen, and he's still so cool and creepy. :)
Not entirely true. He needed a new hand :)
I know this comment is 10 years old but its not necessarily true. Davros received upgrades to himself and his chair over the years to make himself less defenseless. In fact later on his chair can hover, he has his hand replaced with a metal gauntlet that can shoot lethal voltages of electricity, and he has a personal forcefield on his chair that can repulse even the most powerful Dalek weaponry.
That's 'Dirty den' out of Eastender's standing behind Davros. Leslie something. I think he passed away several years ago , so , RIP leslie somethng.

Davros was a realist, growing up in the planetary total war of Skaro, one could see how he would have this philosophy. Survival and victory at all costs, where compassion was a luxury. Those that have not been through the fires of war would have a hard time understanding. however, the doctor gives a great contrast and peter Davison played the internal conflict well. Davros had to be stopped but there was only one way and that was to kill him.
I think the most disturbing part of the scene is Dirty Den standing next to Davros.
This scene is on of the high points of this story. Terry Molloy was a great Davros.
...they were all relatively close together, especially considering we've only seen him, what? once since then....Remembrance was when he was completely encased as the Emperor and searching for the Hand of Omigah right? and it had the Special Weapons Dalek....that was a really good episode....one of my fave McCoy ones....

Some unseen adventure in which Time Lord regenration is explained to him or he finds out about it himself. Most likely such a story would take place between Destiny of The Daleks and this story perhaps with the fourth Doctor and Adric present at Davros' trial on Earth.

The Doctor's darkest dilemma... to kill or not to kill.
A fascinating insight into the doctors personality. The doctor talks about the preoccupation of Davros with killing and revenge, and then states he will execute him. The rage of the time lord, critical of the Daleks lust for conquest but wants to wipe them out himself. It’s definitely a question, how the doctor compares to the daleks morally. The daleks have no morals of course so in that regard they do not see what they are doing as wrong. They are just fulfilling their programming, and expanding their knowledge.
Can't wait to see if they upload the meeting between Davros and Seven in July. "UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING! Et cetera! Et cetera!"

Actually, when I saw him, my first thoughts were Ron Weasley. But ten years from now that might not be so popular, so I assumed there would be another popular red head that people would compare Turlough too. Thanks for the info though, I haven't seen too many of 5's run.
Davors is such a scary villan, as he truly believe what he was saying was right.
He also mix lies with truths, as he was speaking to the Doctor, which made it difficult for Doctor to just kill him.

I wonder if all the doctors know the they're the one who saved davros, so in theory the doctor helped create the daleks by saving young davros
But it also shows something else..
After the 12th did that, their future was changed before our eyes like what was done with that Christmas Carol inspired special.

Which makes me believe some time in the future the doctor might end up doing something in the past that changes Davros for the better.

@@ronaldcustard4636 thing is, I think it already changed. He recognized that when Clara made a Dalek beg for mercy because she was inside the Dalek (literally). That's why he saved Davros and why he taught young Davros about mercy.
