"Sharing a drink they call loneliness but it's better than drinking alone" is one of the best drinking lyrics in any song. Great song made special by the fact that he really lived this...
Funny thing is, I've seen a couple of reactors who thought 'loneliness' was the name of an actual mixed drink.
Shon, you are super charismatic and you do fabulous reactions! Thanks so much! And Billy Joel is a legend. That's him playing the harmonica as well.
Totally right!
Billy Joel humanizes the regulars, but in the eyes of the patrons they simply see him as "you're the piano man."
I was 19 when this song came out. Trust me it's one of the greatest sing-along songs ever. Imagine full bars of people singing this
Song!
Very cool!!!
I was just about to comment the exact same thing martin! I was 19 too and also can't help but to sing along whenever I hear that song. Scary thought that it was 50 years ago.....eeek!
@@CharCanuck14
yet I'm still 19!
Lmao
@@martinl8574 LOL! I think our brains start regressing at 50, so I'm 19 too 😀
He actually has a neck "brace" to hold his harmonica so he can play piano and the harmonica at the same time. Amazing live performances
Yes, this song is about his time as a bar/lounge piano player. He has a gift for detail and for original expression. "When I wore a younger man's clothes", "the smile ran away from his face" - he has a great way of getting things across. :)
Billy Joel is a great singer songwriter & composer from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has so many hits over the years. "Piano Man" is a great storytelling song. The whole "Stranger" album is great & one of my favorites. It has the songs "Just The Way You Are", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" etc.
There are professional musicians who would love to have even one song as good as those in their catalog.
Piano Man came out in 1973 and it is all about what Billy Joel himself went through shortly before that year. It is also one, if not thee song, that at times when asked about it, says that no matter where he goes in the world to a place that has someone playing the Piano, and sees him walk in, they always jump to this song.
Goodnight Saigon is an exceptional tribute to our Vietnam vets 😊
Now that is a good song. A song that tells a story that represents life as we know it. We need more of this. Not the crap we're serving up these days.
Not trying to be a smart aleck Lingoman, but if your not over 55, then people younger than this., especially today ""HAVE NOT ONE CLUE ABOUT WHAT YOU MEAN BY SAYING WE CAN ALL PRETTY MUCH RELATE TO THESE LYRICS!!"" I do agree with you 110% about this junk, YRS CRAP, that young people think that this music, ((MUSIC??!!)) I HARDLY AGREE THAT WHATS BEING CALLED WHAT?? I HAVE NYTHER A CLU!!
@@rhondamcbath6279, having been born in 1958, youngins don't have a clue of what else is out there. Quality material, no automation, no techy instruments, no brand-named wardrobe. Just talented singers, musicians in regular clothes until Elvis got carried away with his Bedazzler. 😆
I'm old! The trade off is that I got to grow up experiencing all of the exceptional talent that there was in our music.
So fun to see young people experience it for the first time and appreciate it for the greatness that it was! And still is!
Great analysis!
Billy Joel's characterizations in this song are worthy of a literary novel (and much more concise). The economy of words and telling details are stunning from a novel writer's perspective.
He sings, plays harmonica and piano too. Xtremely talented man.
Billy Joel played both the piano and harmonica simultaneously, along with the vocals. It was his first single.
Billy Joel "SCENES FROM AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT" and "GOODNIGHT SAIGON" 🔥🔥
Billy Joel is a deep rabbit hole you should definitely explore. The story behind "Piano Man" is real (he didn't even bother changing anyone's names). He signed a bad record deal and tried to disappear until he could get a better one. He worked in a piano bar in Los Angeles to bide his time and make money. This was the first song he released after he got the better record deal.
If you like harmonica, check out the band Blues Travelers, particularly "Hook", "But Anyway", and "Runaround".
Also, check out Led Zepplin's "When the Levee Breaks".
Love “Run-Around”!
Great reaction, love Billy Joel. Be sure to check out Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, it’s another great story-song.
For many years Joel ended his live shows with this song, and he would let the crowd sing the chorus, basically letting everyone beg him to “sing us a song”. Pretty awesome.
Piano Man unico artista che ha tutti gioielli nel suo repertorio.... Dal vivo era un portento.... Leggendario .....
All of his lyrics are BARS !!! Such talent!!!
Every lounge lizard in every hotel bar played this song back in the 70's. I was part of that scene, as well described by the great Billy Joel.
This song was based on part of his life. He was trying to get away from a record contract so was playing in a piano bar. Hence "they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar and say man what are you doing here????"
Billy is my hometown boy, being born and raised on Long Island NY. He is a music legend, but back home, he's nothing less than a cultural icon and hometown hero. Some people are great vocalists, some write great songs and some are phenomenal at a particular instrument. Billy Joel is one of those rare talents that are a triple threat. His catalog is DEEP and once you dive in, you are going to be shocked at how versatile and talented this man is. If I had to choose just a couple of favorites for you to pick from (hopefully all eventually) I would start with the official video for Pressure. Totally different feel than this. Then I highly recommend the live version of Scenes From An Italian Restaurant and Goodnight Saigon.
Also, since you said you like the harmonica so much, I got a treat for you! INXS (it's pronounced in excess), official video for Suicide Blonde. 😉
He plays both the piano and harmonica while singing. Amazing songwriter and musician.

Another great song by
Billy Joel is
🎵 New-York state of mind 🎵
Try the live version ❗️
Your gonna see 👀 all his talent 👏
Keep the good work my friend ✌️ 👏 👍🏻
Yes! Yes! Yes! 👍🏻🔥🔥🔥
Live version from Old Grey Whistle Test in 1978 is amazing
Please react to Goodnight Saigon. Powerful lyrics about the Vietnam War. He has veterans sing the chorus at every concert on stage. Beautiful!!!!! ❤
This is your intro to Billy, as it was most of ours back in the day. Billy's catalog is deep and wide, full of so many stories and styles. His writing is epic, his piano work is insane, his tunes stick with you. Yes, this was pretty much a personal story of where he was working before this song became his 'big break'. I don't even know where to start with suggestions. I guess, here's a handful that most people do when they're new to Billy; pretty good variety here too:
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant (Billy played this show with an injured hand; you can see him nursing it here and there, but still his playing is so badass)

A Matter of Trust (Note that the people on the street aren't actors or 'plants' (other than I think the guy in the chair and the cops). This was a surprise for everyone else out there, and their reactions are real. This is a fun song and also a time capsule of mid-1980s NYC Lower East Side style.

Tell Her About It (Original Video): Fun, upbeat song with a great message.

Pressure (a personal favorite; had this on my car mix tape for years)

Goodnight Saigon (he generally performs this with a chorus of Veterans, and often invites Veterans from the audience to join them on stage):

You May Be Right (Another really fun song). I think a live performance is good with this:

Saw Billy Joel at Dodger Stadium about 5 years ago. After all these decades on the road he still packs 50,000+ into a place like Dodger Stadium. One of the hardest working guys in music. Still plays Madison Square Garden in New York City all the time. He probably has a show this weekend.
I'm late, but your instincts were sot on. Billy fled NY and worked at a piano bar as Bill Martin. After six months in LA he was miserable and went home to NY. Now he's 74 and still filling stadiums. Saw him at Notre Dame last yr and hope to again in Nov in Grand Rapids. Billy's rabbit hole goes on forever
Ballads of love and loss. Bangers about RocknRll, jazz, blues. He does it all. In concert he plays harmonica and pians at the same time. He lets the audience sing the last chorus to him. Look up 2006 Last Play at Shea. Over 50,000 people singing to this man.
Billy Joel is a legend ❤❤ He is a storyteller. Just the Way You Are and Uptown Girl are a lot of fun. Also, in Uptown Girl, the supermodel who plays the girl became his wife for 9 years or so
Also, a little history about this song. Billy wrote it when he was having some problems with his label. It was at the point where he couldn't even use his name Billy Joel, so he had to use his real name Bill Martine. that’s the name that you see at the end of the video. Also, fun fact the waitress that he sings about the one that the business guy pats on the butt, that was actually his girlfriend at the time. Billy also wasn’t very fond of the Piano Man. He thought it was sort of generic, and very surprising that this is one of his biggest hits. So while he was having problems with his label, he was forced to actually work in these lounges and that’s where he got the idea for Piano Man. Plus every story that you hear is based on a real person that he encounter during this time at this lounge. One of my favorites by him, scenes from an Italian restaurant is his best song and is my favorite song. You should definitely listen..
This song was part of his first album and was the first single he released in November 1973. The song was inspired by his experiences playing piano in bars. He released his last album, River of Dreams, in 1993, but is still performing today at the age of 74. He is among the top 20 best selling solo artists of all time. He's a great singer, song writer, and composer. Just a few of his hits are Uptown Girl, Only the Good Die Young, Just the Way You are, She's Always a Woman, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me, and River of Dreams. Great reaction!
Billy was one of the best storytellers during the time when the singer songwriters ruled music
Has to be one of the best pictured lyric song of all times. Its an offshoot of the Beatles era.
He has a deep catalogue. He’s also still performing live. As others have said, he plays piano and harmonica when performing this live. His songs, like this one, are so iconic that his concerts are just giant sing alongs. He’ll let the audience sing the chorus to this - and let me tell you, hearing all of Madison Square Garden singing like a big ass bar crowd is so much fun. Check out “Goodnight Saigon,” “Only the Good Die Young,” “She’s Always a Woman,” “Sceens from an Italian Restaurant,” “Nee York State of Mind,” and “Miami 2017 (The Lights Went Out on Broadway”. If you like songwriting that tells stories, check out “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” by Meat Loaf. Love your energy man.
Your analyzation of every song you do is so on point!
One of the best concerts I've ever had the pleasure to attend. He was 🔥😎😎😎😎
His answer to what are you doing here.... waiting for something better ❤ to come along. 😌
here we gooo!
One of the greatest musical storytellers of all time. Hard to find a bad song of his. To learn more about his and his life and to be entertained with some epic performances at the same time, check out "Billy Joel Kennedy Center Honors 2013 Complete - Full Performance" where a bunch of artists performed his songs to honour him. It's really worth the watch!
If no one else has suggested it Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is another superb Billy Joel song telling a story. Great lyrics and a bit of a surprising melody. Any Beatles/Dusty on the horizon? 😉
Yesssss!!! Fabulous story-song!
I was never much of a Billy Joel fan, and that's not to say I don't recognize his immense talents; but "Piano Man" has always been an all-time favorite. I love the picture he paints thru the entire song with his lyrics, and the melody is so catchy and pretty. Enjoyed this, Shon.
Wow Shon! You really GET this stuff, all music. You really have an excellent ear for music & lyrics and their deeper meaning. That's rare!
Shon, you are one of the top 4/5 reactors on here easily. It’s sickening that most react to funny words they hear or something not in the songs meaning. You catch everything, pay attention, actually care, are extremely into whatever the genre is and want to further your own understanding that all music has a reason/important role in life. Kudos, keep it up!!!
Another great storyteller/songwriter/musician/lyricist/singer. Huge catalogue of great music over 3 decades. He still sells out MSG singing his hits.
You guessed it. Billy started singing at bars and this is autobiographic. Another song from him that is in a similar storey telling vein is "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" which is amazing.
@Shon I’m sure it was coincidence, but I suggested this just last night, based on, you guessed it, storytelling and the harmonica! I knew you’d dig this one. Great reaction, I’m so happy you enjoyed it!
Yes, this was his life❤ New York State of Mind next please, enjoy.
In the early 70's. he was in a fight with his record label and could not perform, so he paid the bills by playing as a lounge singer under an fake name. His wife at the time worked the same bar as a waitress. He says the people in the song are based on patrons he got to know.
Billy Joel is a genius. "Longest Time" ought to be next by BJ.
Love your reactions Shon. ❤🇬🇧
The story is so good you can visualize everything he is singing.
We didn’t start the fire by Billy Joel is the one you should do next. The lyrics are amazing
You will love his song Just The Way You Are. It is beautiful and timeless. The song is from the late 70’s and it was my wedding song…in 2011 ❤
You We’re right on the money! Amazing story teller, lyricist, playing the piano and the harmonica. An incredibly talented musician. And he did start out playing piano in bars in LA and Las Vegas! Became international superstar! Please check him out with “I’m in a NY state of Mind”!!!!! You were so enjoyable to watch. ❤✌️
Actually he had put out an album it didn't do to well so he went out doing bars for about 6 months and got a call from his agent. Said one of his songs, captain Jack had became the number one requested song in Philadelphia. So he came back cut a new album with paino man on it and the rest is history
When you see this l live Billy plays piano, harmonica, and sings.
This gentleman is one of the best reactors active right now...
Aww...Thank you for this! Billy Joel is a master at story telling and a great musician. I think this came out in '73, and he's still going strong! It was a Very fun reaction...I will hit subscribe!
Billy Joel is most definitely one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. His catalogue is deep and he is amazing live. A concert you really should go to if you ever get the chance
This song is one of the most popular requests at our local dueling piano bar. People tip like crazy during this song. And the sing along factor is a lot of fun.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LISTIN TO MORE OF HIS MUSIC❤❤❤❤❤ HE IS ONE OF MY APP TIME FAVORITS
Anyone else feel like he watched the video at 1:25 speed?
It was faster with skips or glitches. Took away from the mood.
Thought it was just me.
It was definitely sped up. I had to check the comments to make sure I wasn’t just hearing things.
Thanks for your reaction Shon, check out his "Italian Restaurant", what a show.
Great song that touches on aspects of living that many of us identify with.
Comment 40. 👍 Written by Billy Joel. He plays piano 🎹 and harmonica. 40 years old 🎂. Classic 🙌
Suggested videos 📹: 1 Billy Joel sings Honesty 2 Billy Joel sings Uptown Girl 👧
One of my favorite songs ever, together with "the entertainer" also from Billy joel
Thanks Shon! Great reaction as always. Billy is one of the artists you missed in USA for Africa btw
The many types of harmonica include diatonic, chromatic, tremolo, octave, orchestral, and bass versions. A harmonica is played by using the mouth (lips and tongue) to direct air into or out of one (or more) holes along a mouthpiece.
Great storytelling in this song! We all know the people he's describing.
Thanks a lot for your comments and for diggin the spirit of the 70's, 80's and especially for your enthusiasm, it is contageous, especially for someone like me who has lived such times, loved your feedback on Jackson Browne, by the way if you like Billy Joel, have you tried Honesty? Anyway, this is the reason why I have pushed the subscribe button, don't change, greetings from Madrid
Welcome to the party Shon👍👍 Billy's catalog is vast 🙏 please dive in! "The Stranger" would be a great next 👍👍 Spread the love Brother 🐶😎🇺🇸
Shall I be the first to mention Bills Lyrics , the words are so genius .
I like the 1.5x sped up track… adds a half an octave to his voice . Tempo moves from about 90bpm to 130 lol wow
You’d love Billy’s song, Scenes from an Italian restaurant.
Sounds like the music video is playing at a faster speed than normal. I do like your reactions though. Keep up the good work.
There’s an accordion in there with the piano and harmonica. Love your enthusiasm. 🌺✌️
I love this song. It's one of those that never gets old to me. I have so much appreciation for songs that literally tell a story from just everyday life. Some other good "story" songs are Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega, All I Wanna Do by Sheryl Crow, and A Day In The Life by the Beatles.
If you like harmonicas, you absolutely need to react to The J Geils Band performing "Whammer Jammer" from their live album "Full House". The harmonica player (Magic Dick) puts on a harmonica clinic for the ages on that one! Peter Wolf, the lead vocalist's, intro to the song is legendary!
You never disappoint my friend. Your reactions are be best!
This was his first chart topper. She's Always a Woman, My Life, Rosalinda's Eyes, Just the Way You Are, and so many more.
This is exactly where Billy started.
Shon please keep your authenticity! You are pure joy and love that you listen to the words and melodies.. you will keep growing if you stay true to who you are.. thank you for bringing a smile to so many 😊😊
I love watching you g people watch music from this old lady's youth. You just can't compare to today. Not saying music now isn't good...just it doesn't compare. Lol love how you get into it
Billy Joel was married to super model Christy Brinkley for a while. He did a song called Uptown Girl about her. You should check out the video. 😉
Billy Joel in the 70's was OUTSTANDING! 80's good. Do Captain Jack!
The great Billy Joel belting out a great song. Good reaction. ❤❤
Check out Billy Joel, scene from an Italian restaurant. You won’t be disappointed…
He actually walked away from a contract he had with Harbor record due to the mismanagement of his first album to reevaluate what he wanted to do, that's when he started to play in a piano bar. The rest is history.
Good to see younger folk checkin out the classics...
Shon, the day you find a song by him that lets youdown, I'll send you a shirt...🤣Love your reactions Man. 🍻💞
This is really how it is. Been there done that.
Shon Awsome job on reacting to this song !
it's an absolute joy to watch you react to great songs, LOL,,,,,,,never stop bro
I feel like you "got" this one better than any reaction I've seen on it before.
I love your reactions, you really listen to everything-music and lyrics. I think you would really enjoy his official video of "The Longest Time". He does it acapella with some guys-it's about going back to his high school reunion and meeting their younger selves. Great video!
Also saw him live .❤
Great reaction! Thanks for keeping great music alive!
I agree with Amy (below); you do great reactions, and thanks. Piano Man is one of his best...AND, check out a live version of "New York State of Mind". His piano playing is over the top and there's a killer sax player going off, as well.
You are my favorite, my brother of a different color!❤️
Much love to you & yours
Don’t know if you’ve done KD Lang, but her live performance of Crying in 1990 is an unforgettable performance ❤enjoy.
(Live 1990 Roy Orbison Tribute) version
Another great song writer and story teller in country music is the man in black, Johnny Cash. Please check out the song called "A boy named Sue" please react to it, i love your reactions thanks, peace.
