New York State of Mind at Ole Grey Whistle- Billy Joel. You will love it Britt ❤
You have to do New York State of Mind from a British show called The Old Grey Whistle Test. It's live. It's in his younger days. And you look really hot in glasses..
I disagree. Great version, absolutely. But, for a first reaction nothing can beat the perfect production of the studio version.
Especially being a NY girl (I think I heard Britt say that?) it is captivating.
@@tonyberezowski7859yeah, I’m with you. I like that version, but I feel like people should always start with the studio version, especially in this case.
This! The live version, that is
Do this live version please!!!!! You'll love it.
My brother had naturally curly hair, my mother trimmed it into a big afro, which was a big thing in the 70s.
I always loved this one! And speaking of tough but incredibly insightful Billy Joel lyrics, I love Stiletto and Bigshot!
I always thought this song had a bit of a Ragtime feel to it.
the phrase, only the good die young, is a reference to a 60's phrase about JFK, RFK and Martin Luther King assasinations. it was to descibe others who died too soon. Billy Joel I think just used it because to a well known phrase back then
And there we have it...there's my regret. Now I'm older and I wish I'd laughed with the sinners a bit more often in my youth and that's the truth. Can't go back.
You have missed his hit "IT'S STILL ROCK & ROLL TO ME!" so please do that one! It's fun and will probably make you want to dance.
Gotta do that one.
Great song!!
One of my all-time favorite songs! It was always played during my school dances... Circa 1990s. 😂
Better yet the Weird Al Yankovic parody, It's Still Billy Joel to Me.
The song is a narrator pressuring a Catholic girl to sleep with him instead of waiting until marriage, emphasized by her name prominently featuring the word "virgin." He also has a song about phone sex called "Sometimes a Fantasy."
Today he might be called a Chad or Tyrone. And then later on when he's ditched her he could sing along with Elvis, "I Was the One." Not much has changed in 50 or 60 years. I remember those guys from as far back as junior high.
The Virginia in the song is named after a school classmate that Billy had a crush on. Billy wrote the song from his true experience, trying to get Virginia to go out with him. Unfortunately, his efforts failed. Virginia never went out with Billy.
Enjoyed this so much!!! Your reaction was like a conversation I would have with a good friend about great music........And maybe religion! ❤ Billy Joel is tremendous!!!!!
My supposition here, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that Mr. Joel thinks that Virginia is likely a virgin.
Went to Catholic school...loved this when it came out
Billy Joel has a huge catalog of massive hits. Glad to see you are getting to react to some. He's a master songwriter and storyteller.
You should check out Billy Joel’s, “For The Longest Time”! Another really good one! It’s setting is his high school reunion!
Back in the mid-70s this song was surprisingly controversial. A lot of radio stations wouldn't play it. When he appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1978, he played "Just the Way you Are" first, and his second song was supposed to be something else (maybe "She's Always a Woman"), but he switched it up at the last minute and played this instead. He didn't get invited back until 1989. But it didn't hurt his career, to say the least.
The nuns hated when we played this song in our cars at church. Played it really loud.
When this song came out our priest addresses the youth groups about boycotting this song. (We’re not Catholic, we’re Greek Orthodox but just as strict). About 10 years ago that same priest was excommunicated for having an affair with a parishoner. I guess he’ll live to an old age.
After his first LP gained traction with Piano Man and Captain Jack on the charts, we had tickets in his first major national tour. The auditorium had 2400 seats, only half sold. Billy steps out on stage, shades his bulging eyes (a condition he had at that age), saw the sparse attendance, then announced, “It’s quality, not quantity”. Won us over immediately and put on a wildly animated show. Within the year his mega-hit, Just the Way You Are had him selling out stadiums and never looking back.
My favourite Billy Joel song. The other two: "Uptown Girl and We Didn't Start the Fire"..
It is a great song. :) I have trouble picking a favorite with him. I usually say it's Your Only Human, but I do love, love, love You May Be Right as well. I just put him on repeat and listen to his songs over and over when I need some good music. X)
you should always do the studio version first that away u know your getting the Original version and u can hear it more clear too because the crowd can sometime make it hard to hear the words
Wonderful story song-best version is to watch the live version from Madison Square Garden-he just blasted into outer space when he did this song. "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints." Great song and explosive lyrics. Billy Joel had a great way with lyrics.
Ballad of Billy The Kid & Captain Jack live at Shea
You got it! He originally wanted it to be regea (sp?). Band was like.....no. He joked that the fastest way to get a hit is to have the church ban it! 😅 As a Catholic teen when this song came out, my friends and I loved it!!! 😅 Saw him at Notre Dame with my son in 22. He played this and the Catholic Notre Dame crowd went wild. The church forgave him. 😂 ❤
This was an anthem for so many repressed kids. When the Catholic girls school let out it was rush hour at the local health clinic 😂 This is a song from the end of a era
As a Catholic teen when this was released, my friends and i could not listen enough! My Grandma, a devout Catholic, even liked it. She said, " boys need their nookie". She was a hoot!😂
As a former catholic, yep. This was my t sisters and I theme song.
So interesting that you said "the music feels very caribbean orientated" . Billy composed this song originally in a reggae style and later changed it in the recording studio.
I for one have always loved this song!! It's so fun!!!!😂🎉
Good girl bad boy thang!
His live performance of "New York State of Mind" (which he wrote) from this same show is PEAK COOL. We're talking Elvis type cool, Ray Charles cool. It's a must watch - such an iconic song as well.
You HAVE to do New York State of Mind from Old Grey Whistle Test, I think its from the same appearance. You will absolutely love it. His personality and musicianship from he and his band are so, sooooo good.
Went to an all-girls Catholic school in the 90s and they played this at every school mixer dance. 😂
I was threatened wit Catholic school as a freshman but I remained a public school heathen, so I could troll the nuns in CCD. They hated when we played Highway To Hell.
From Virgina to Christy....checkout Uptown Girl!
I grew up Catholic and my family is still very Catholic. I went to Catholic school. It was a blast. Interestingly, Catholics have no problem with smoking (when I was young), drinking, or gambling. It's just sexual activity they got really uptight about because sex was only considered ok to procreate. At least that's how I remember it. My grandfather cut my grandmother off regarding sex after 4 children and her still refusing to use birth control....because it was a sin. She sure could drink though
this is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs please do the Entertainer next its my favorite Billy Joel songs also you should react too Billy Joe Royal out of sight and on my mind Ill pin a note on your pillow any song by him is amazing he one of my favorite singers and has so many great song too
The Entertainer is one that he plays a lot on tour. Even though it was not a "hit" the crowd goes crazy and knows every word. In 22 i saw him at Notre Dame and this song and Vienna along with Ballad of Billy the Kid were crowd favorites.
Great song!!
Would love for you ti react to Christopher Williams "every little thing you do" 90s new jack swing!
Only the good die young is a very old expression and as far as I know it was used when somebody young did die, because it was a way of saying that if God "recalled" this soul so early then that must have been a good soul indeed and he(she?) just wanted that person close again. Just a way of giving comfort to the loved ones who suffered the loss... and that's not all bad, not at all.
But what Billy is saying, I think, is that if "only the good die young", then why are you trying so hard to be so good? Wouldn't you rather get a bit of fun out of your God-given life before you go???
Another great reaction to another great song.
Cheers!
~Dan
Once again, the first time you hear a song you should listen to the original recording. The “live” versions are always very different. Brit, skip the LIVE CONCERT VERSIONS…the ORIGINAL VERSION first. You are missing out…big time.
I love Billy Joel, he was one of my favorites in the 70's.
Great song, great choice, Britt. I love it but then I always have. Actually, he’s saying if you don’t have a good time now you’ll end up dying young because you’re too good. 😂
Love your reaction! I was told once, "If you're judging, you're not loving". Words to live by.
I hope you see this Britt. I just discovered the country music lady trio called Chapel Hart. I really think you would love it. They made a video kinda directed towards Dolly Partons " Jolene" but theirs is " You can have him Jolene".
There is a version of New York State of Mind from this same show. One of the most amazing performances of all time!
You need to react to New York State of mind performed at the same place the old gray whistle test
I agree!
Hi, Britt, awesome one To react to it's splashed zone from Saturday night live. It has a young george clooney if you're a fan very funny enjoy
I was a 15 year old catholic girl when I first heard this song. Wasn’t offended then or now. It’s just a song about teenage lust. He actually had a crush on a girl named Virginia when he was in high school. Loved the reaction.
Also check out Mark Kohn "Walking in Memphis"......I, as a child in the 80's/90's thought someone else sang this song. Try to guess who.
This is one of my favorite songs by him and it's off my favorite album by him, The Stranger, which was a mind-blowingly good album. We used to dance our asses off in high school to this.
I played this for my beautiful daughter when she was in early high school. It turned i to a bonding moment. I hope there is enough bad in her to live a lot longer. She was diagnosed with flHCC at 23. An ultra rare form of liver cancer. It was a hell of a trip and she is stronger than me. I would have given up during the 3 major surgeries than followed and the 4th to fix the mess from the 3rd. The only good thing i can say about that experience is i got to stay with her for 6 weeks at a time as she recovered from those major surgeries. 3 years of good scan now and counting and hoping for so many more. My shinning star.
Billy wrote this song about a red headed Irish-Catholic girl he went to school with that he had a mad crush on. Never went any further than that.
FYI: Billy has a CBS Special on April 14th. It's a full concert from his residency at MSG
Yeah, the Catholic Church tried to get this song banned. Lmao
They also would be good with banning laws against child rape, look child sacrifice, rape, incest, murder and ultimately cannibalism have always existed it's just sad when people are unclear wether our "leaders" should be allowed to practice those types of rituals.
I forgot about that. 😂
There are some peoples that are within the churches and other forms of religion that are doing those exact same things as well it's not just the people that are outside of churches
It was kinda funny when they tried to do that all it did was made young adults want to hear the song anyway and it ended up making the song a big hit
Funny you should mention that it has a Caribbean beat. Billy originally wrote as a reggae song. His drummer Liberty threw his drum sticks at him and said the closest he ever been to Jamaica was on the station on the Long Island rail line
You are easily the best of all "reaction video" reviewers.
I would like to suggest that you react to Ed Ames singing "My Cup Runneth Over." A good example is from the Ed Sullivan Show.
Keep up the great work! 🎉
Billy played Yankee Stadium in the 90's and the real Virginia was there. He really did have a crush on her but was too shy to ask her out. He has said the song is not anti Catholic, it's pro teenage lust. In the concert tape from Yankee Stadium as they started this song you can hear Billy yell, "She's here!". 😂
Billy Joel was born in 1949, which means he was around 16 when Vatican II, which finally modernized some of the more restrictive elements of the Catholic faith passed, so if he was thinking about those old teenage years of his....yeah, those Catholic girls were certainly not being encouraged to laugh with any sinners. Heck, they were being told to leave room for the Holy Ghost between them and any boys with whom they were dancing. Also, the phrase "only the good die young" is a very old saying that originally meant that the morally upright tended to die younger, sometimes because they insisted on defending ethical stances that were not popular. In some circles, it's kind of morphed into meaning that you never really live if all you're continually concentrating on is being good. For me, this song always brings back memories of my friend Vonnie blasting it out the windows of her Catholic college dorm room window directly across the campus toward the convent, though I doubt any of the sisters ever heard it or, if they did, were going to do anything about it. They'd learned to live with a lot being so close to a dorm full of college-aged women, and by the time I was there, men as well (started out as a college for women but even the dorm we were in was co-ed by the time we got there). BTW, I'm not Catholic---but Vonnie was.
I love this song. One of my favorites of his. As many times as I've heard it I only noticed the organ playing today.
One of the most sweet people I ever met passed away at 42 of cancer. They played this at his funeral. RIP Stevie
"I'd rather laugh with the sinners than die with the saints." That's when you got it. Could see it in your eyes. You're good. Keep going. You've made a fan of me.
My favorite line
Lyrics on the internet are often riddled with mistakes.
This album was one of my high school favorites. Not a bad song in the mix!
I was 15 when this song came out. I was going to a Catholic HS and my parents were very conservative, but never paid attention to my music. But there was an op-ed piece written in our local newspaper about this song! The writer said the "Billy Joel song was a disgrace and a slap in the face to the Catholic Church." My mom asked me if I knew of the song and I of course said yes. She told that I shouldn't listen to it anymore! What??!!?? I didn't have the album, but now I wanted to go to the record store and buy it!!! And I did, a couple of months later!
thanks for reacting to Billy. I am so glad you checked out the lyrics since that is one of the things that make his songs so good
I always took the "only the good die young" line to mean that those who followed their teachings during childhood to live in a manner considered "good", don't actually get a chance to really experience their life. Therefore, they "died" young.
I think he's saying that God calls his favorites first (hence, only the good die young). Unfortunately, I guess I might live forever 🙁. However, I think God and I get along just fine (He knows exactly who I am), but it may be a long road (hopefully not too much suffering). Peace, Love!!
please react to Afgan Shallow Water.. his voice very beautiful.. thankyou❤
I dont know about some of these suggestions. Get to them all, for sure. But, first diving into his catalog I beg you to spend much more time in the 70's before moving on!
So many fantastic hits and deep cuts.
The Stranger, Anthony's Song, Vienna, Get it Right the First Time, Honesty, Zanzibar, Stiletto, Rosalinda's Eyes, Half a Mile Away...
And that's just from 1977-78!
Billy is an icon.
Worst-timed first pause imaginable! :) (Just kidding... but also true.)
The good time he's encouraging her to have is to join the PDC. (Btdubs - this is my all-time karaoke jam.)
You entirely missed the joke of Virginia's name!😀 As they old joke goes "They called her Virgin for short, but not for long".
The song is not to deep, it is simply about a guy trying to talk a devout Catholic girl into losing her virginity to him.
This is just the story of a NYC kid trying to make it with a Catholic girl. You know how young guys will say anything to get to the promised lane, he’s justifying being bad now because nothing is certain and that she’s confirming to what THEY want her to be.
This was a good version of the song but I think you should always check out the original studio version first of all songs, This way you hear it as we did when it first came out!!!!
Please react to Louis dunford ballad of Benjamin (raises awareness for knife crime in UK) plus he's an underrated artist
It’s the proverbial “bad boy” song. You got it right. 😊 He does it so well tho. 😊
“Ballad of Billy the Kid” is another of his “bad boy” songs. It’s part fantasy-part autobiography.
Being raised Catholic in late 60s and 70s......I loved this somg.
Her name was "Virginia" -- not too complicated! As an old fart, I have a feeling nowadays the concept of remaining a virgin until marriage has become totally alien and impossible for someone as young as Britt to comprehend. But it used to be a big deal. The rest of the analysis of these lyrics is unnecessary.
You should check out his song New York State of Mind from the same place the old grey whistle test
A few weeks ago you reacted to Billy and asked if all his song were so Wholesome? I guess that answers that LOL. Very controversial song on the radio back in the day.
He’s inviting her to his bed 😂 it’s not subtle. Great reaction- I’d suggest Prelude/Angry Young Man (Live) - best piano performance ever
Ooo, Dialated Peoples -Worst Comes To Worst! 😀 Great song!
Such a fun song. I remember when my father (not Catholic) introduced it to me.
This was my mom's favorite Billy Joel song. She was a good little catholic girl named Virginia.
Martina McBride has a song called Whatever You Say, and part of the lyric goes:
I know that you can hear me
But I'm not sure you're listening
And that sums up this song really because if Catholics think girls should wait longer before first having sex, then by Billy singing:
Come out, Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
Any Catholic should see that as a positive if Catholic girls are waiting.
I love your reactions. I can count on you for nothing to get by you!❤
Very good analysis. I always think of this during my time as a non-Catholic in Catholic schools (grades 7-12).
Side note: Those glasses are fantastic... ladies in glasses have always been a weakness for me! But hey - you're fantastic with or without them!
I haven't heard that in a long while. Thank you.
I do remember some girls that had extremely strict, religious parents and they really didn't get to experience much growing up. Not surprisingly, some of them also got pretty wild when they turned 18 or so. Like you say, it is not so much the religion as it is the parents who take it to the extreme and keep their kids from experiencing life. I was raised in a Catholic family (and neighborhood with a Church down the street), but we were not sheltered like that and it turned out good for most.
"Big Shot" is a fun one too
I've been a pastor's wife(Lutheran) for 30 years and I love this song.
Hey Britt....I'm too dumb to know where to post this, so I'll post it here. Have you heard Marvin Gaye sing his mega hit 'Let's Get It On'? Ohhhh myy...not only is he PDC worthy, you might make him president of the club. I'd start with the studio version...lotta layers and textures. You won't be disappointed!
Anything by Marvin Gaye is old-school fabulous! Baby-making music is what we used to call it, lol!
Another fun song from this era is Bigshot. You’d love it.
One of the songs i liked of his is "in the middle of the night(River of Dreams)"
Perfect analysis. Thanks for the reaction!
"New York State of Mind" Live from The Old Grey Whistle Test!
Young boy trying to convince a girl to give it up? A story as old as time itself lol. Always enjoyed this song.
The reason that he said the song might offend some is because it was about a boy trying to talk a girl into losing her virginity. "I might as well be the one..." It was widely condemned by the Catholic Church who tried to get it banned.
I was waiting for her reaction when it clicked that he was saying "let me be your first sex", but she never got that.
Alright!!!!! 😊❤❤❤
I am a Catholic and when this song came out I was in the car with my father and asked him to turn the music up and he heard the words "You catholic girls start much too late" he lost it, why was I listening to this trash! Several years later I went to a Catholic retreat and during breaks we listened to music and guess what one of the songs that played?
😂😂😂 I love this story!!
This is the Billy Joel I remember in concert. Great days of my life.
"What that man can do with a set of ivory keys" - truer words never spoken! I'm still hoping to hear you react to New York State of Mind :)
Great reaction Britt , saw him live a couple times in Toronto. First mid 80s at Maple Leaf gardens. Saw him again with Elton John in 2008 or 09 at ACC both awesome experiences.
You look ridiculous with those glasses on, and I love it. ❤
Not surprisingly, some Catholic college radio stations (like Seton Hall) were not allowed to play this song. One Catholic group called it "blasphemous."
I was 17 , in Catholic School and our Senior Class loved it! And! Billy’s sister went to my School!
What a great time to live!
Glad you like him too! We were not offended!
Ha!
I had dinner with Billy Joel’s drummer Liberty Devito. He signed a pair of drumsticks for me, I offered to give them away if they could name Billy’s drummer. Took a decade for someone to get right. He taught me to pronounce lawn g’island properly. Liberty made a good point, his hero was ringo starr, and now Billy Joel has more number 1 hits than the Beatles so as far as he was concerned, he was sitting in ringo’s seat, yet no one knows his name.
Britt, this band was great for Billy. His Whistle Stop performances were amazing. Each one!
Everybody Loves You Now is a rip roaring fun tune!
One he did write for someone in his life......
His next band was great too. The one with which he performs most routinely of late is good. He makes them good. But Cannata and Liberty, then Rivera and his guitarists (Brown, Javors and Stegmeyer were brilliant.)
And yes, growing up in the 70's (and I count glass houses as a 70's album since its release was early N
March '80,) in a very Catholic household, this song was not played. Btw skipping a song on an old Pos turntable was no easy feet back then.
Great Reaction!! Your instinct for music is awesome!
The girl's name says a LOT for the story... Virgin-ia
EXACTLY what I was going to say....
This song really had an impact on me in my late teens as a sheltered Christian raised girl, especially the line, “She never cared for me, but did she ever say a prayer for me?”
