      Its got 4 doors, I just can't except that being called a hot hatch .. Its a mini wagon in reality, a Fagon if you will.. It weights too much, and tries to over come its obesity issue by throwing more power at it.. When the real problem, is its just too big..

    I had the older model back in 2011 ish (250bhp / cup / Recaro / 19” etc.) and I have to admit, the damn thing could still put the fear of god in me even after 12 months of owning it! Amazing car.

      Kaisuke971 all the "sub 7 min" cars also have 500++ hp. Nur has not many tight corners. Its not so easy to judge, for me. In my familly we had 4ws car already in 1986. It was Prelude. Handling was very, very impressive, but i still dont know how much 4ws system helped bc i never drove the same car without it, for comparsion.

    The last gen was already pretty damn agile, i can only imagine how this feels with its 4wheel steering. Also i love that they kept the styling relatively simple and didn't stick tons of spoilers to it. Shame that they didn't really work on the manual though, the shifting feels way too rubbery in the 3rd gen

  • @Josekpl
    @Josekpl 5 років тому +10

    Somtimes journalists think too much about who will buy a car - like here, about this being in no mans land. Few people think - 'I want a hot hatch that's primary for the street so will get a GTI' or 'I want a hot hatch as a second car that can be really compromised so I'll get a type R'. A lot of people however think - this looks very cool - I'll have that one. I'm a GTI person myself, but I can see how this looks much more sporty, but not 'highschoolish' like a honda. I will get buyers on the looks alone, and it does have 280hp and stuff.

    • @thegirthquake8574
      @thegirthquake8574 5 років тому +1

      Josekpl
      The thing is, the reviewers are meant to do these things. They have to consider the buyer-- at least if they're good at their jobs. A strictly opinionated reviewer leads to what we have as the norm:
      Loud reviewers who scream and shout without looking out for the consumer, and who are so biased that they'd try to convince their audience why their preference is better for certain cars.
      They'd say "These hatch backs are fast and all, but just buy an M3/Corvette! It's the same money and is just better!" Without thinking who the car is actually for-- people like you abs I who like hatchbacks.

    • @Josekpl
      @Josekpl 5 років тому

      I think I didn't make myself clear. This is clearly a car for someone who already decided that hot hatch is the way to go, which is already pretty specific if you ask me. So the buyer is someone who wants a fast hatch. But saying that among this group of people, this is in no mans land as it's too hardcore for everyday use, but softer than the Type-R for the track is IMO incorrect. If someone already knows that is going the hot hatch route, it will be things like brand loyalty, the looks of the car, personal preference that will lead that person to their own choice. As I said earlier, among those people, very few will go into such details as comparing small differences in practicality, ride quality or track performance. Hot hatch is mainly an emotional buy and winning in the looks department (for some people) will be enough to pull the trigger. That said, I loved the Clio RS, but after having driven one, I realized it's perfect for having fun, but I would not want to own one to drive everyday as the ride was punishing - that's enough for me - out of ~100k miles I put on my GTI, 400-500 were on a racetrack. Cheers

    • @leroy7647
      @leroy7647 5 років тому +1

      Except for when you get the automatic with the flappy paddles and you are mid corner, trying to change gear, but instead you change the song on the radio.

    • @christill
      @christill 5 років тому

      Leroy de Leeuw the button to change input is on top so not the type of action of a paddle shift. And to change radio station is a scroll wheel so also nothing like a shift. The only things that you can do with a pulling action are vol up and down or radio on and off

    • @leroy7647
      @leroy7647 5 років тому

      Perhaps I should have elaborated further: the problem I have is that the paddle shifts are actually oddly placed upwards behind the wheel, because of said media keys. That means that in a right-hand corner, you might have problems reaching the right paddle because of your hand being too far away from the paddles. For me, interfering with the driving offsets any advantage by having media keys close.
      This video illustrates my point: ua-cam.com/video/YeCSTZLRXE4/v-deo.html&t=225

    • @christill
      @christill 5 років тому

      Leroy de Leeuw Fair enough. I can’t really comment as the Zoe doesn’t have any paddles. I would like them to add regen paddles though because they give you even more control over how you want to slow down. Most EVs are getting them now. The Zoe was designed to be an approachable first EV for people so they didn’t include a lot of techy EV features.
      I’m pretty sure they can do it in a way that doesn’t cause problems because you’re generally only going to be using the paddles when you’re going in a straight line. As far as performance cars with paddles, I can see why it might cause an issue if you’re turning. Are you shifting when the wheel is at 90 degrees?
      I guess the main problem is that they’re not mounted to the wheel directly. But then I guess that’s more because they don’t expect you to be shifting while turning than because they can’t mount them on the wheel.

    great review Henry, I always like your stuff...but one thing I can't agree on with you (and many, many of your motoring journalist colleagues around the world), is that the suspension is too stiff for daily driving. I just bought an RS 280 Cup EDC (in Flame Red metallic...delicious!) for my wife to replace her M135i, and it is a perfectly fine daily drive!
    believe me when I tell you that she's NOT a rev-head - she just likes her quick hatches - and she has no issues with it. I also think it's even (slightly) more comfortable than the Bimmer! seriously, people who complain about the chassis on this car must normally drive a super-soft SUV/large car daily...they're awesome. :)

    The standard fit Bridgestone S001 tyres probably don't do the low speed ride quality any favours as they have really hard sidewalls. A switch to something like a Michelin PS4S would reaps huge benefits with the 19s, as they've transformed my Mk3 Megane RS in this respect.

  • @michaelgoodwin593

    I don't think the old car, the 275, had any feel from the steering wheel. It was a really great steering rack but it was electric at the end of the day, I just think the push rod setup and the way they set the weight and lack of variable steering was great. That coupled with the seemingly unending lateral grip on the road made a driver think the steering rack was good. Was a fun car to drive, sounds like the new 280 could be even better so long as theres no stupid variable steering rack. I hear the steering rack comments a lot in the new 280 reviews though. Wondering if its a bit fake or sloppy.

    The audio controls are great on the manual but on the auto they have forced the paddle shifters to not protrude down low enough. I believe it's the same gearbox as the previous model, but it does feel different and I think it's due to the gear knob. My son also complained about the stitching on the steering wheel but I have absolutely no issue with it ... I guess it's one of those things that you either don't notice or if you do drives you nuts. I have both the 2013 RS265 Red Bull edition and the 2019 RS 280 Cup, and I haven't really been able to decide which I prefer driving in anger, but the new one is definitely much easier to live with as a daily driver. Both have shitty software , but at least I can read the instrument cluster on the new one :-)
    All in all they are both great cars. My wife has the 2018 GT Megane with the EDC gearbox and for a 1.6L it's not bad at all. Certainly Renault Sport do a great job :-)

    How would you compare this car with the Peugeot 308 GTI?

  • @lok481
    @lok481 5 років тому

    I think it looks excellent, great shape and the wheels really suit it. I also agree on the Audio controls best I’ve used in a car and safe to use while driving, unlike others positioned ON the steering wheel (ford etc)🤔 Don’t really understand the gripe about the steering wheel stitching it’s the same on all ‘sporty’ wheels is it not??

    The older model would come out on top but....I wonder how this Megane RS stacks to the new Cupra...perhaps the 4 wheel steering are an advantage

    Should have had the Cup chassis with adjustable dampers for a more comfortable ride in day to day use.

    I wonder if you can take the limited slip diff. without the stiffer suspension , that would be perfect!

    Im curious about Trophy version. Do they just stiffen the dampers a bit and recalibrate ecu or it will be really a "mental" hardcore drivers car? Also their MT is sloppy for years now, cmon Renault :|

    The question is would this be better then the Focus ST 2019?

    • @anthonykelmann3640
      @anthonykelmann3640 5 років тому

      I've got the same question. Focus may have the advantage in the adaptive damping. The Renault Cup suspension is said to be very stiff. Plus Focus will be less expensive.

    No option for the diff without the cup suspension. Shame. Put it on 17s with higher tyres. More to lean on, more comfort.

    How can you do a review that so balanced and Drew basically records an Audi scripted advert!?
    This car sounds right up my street. If you are buying a proper hot hatch it should feel the part all the time. I'm sure some would like the diff without the suspension...
