  • In this 5th video of the series, I continue working with the gold ore I got from Jason at MBMM. Here I smelt the ore, then cupel the resulting lead prill. The result was unexpected. Watch and see... Please visit mdpub.com/UrbanGoldMining/inde... for more information.

Within the cupel, only the noble metals - gold, silver, and platinum group metals (PGMs) - should reside, so your sample quite simply needs more lead.

Agree with below the scrap lead sheet isn't pure lead, prob a bit of Tin . Jason used actual pure lead and also bismuth.

Copper acts as a conduit metal during cupelation, if you have a decent % of copper, it will pull gold into the cupel

Going by volume is a mistake, IMHO. Both concentrates and flux chemicals can have wildly varying specific densities so you're not being accurate at all if you go by volume unless you have a known and uniform stock of materials (which isn't the case when dealing with ores)

cupel furnace is not hot enough - it has to be above the melting point of gold at a minimum.

I DO want the iron, copper, lead and nickel!
    They are valuable too!

While there's probably some copper which can be removed by adding more lead and cupelling again. How pure is your lead? Lead often contains a significant amount of other metals like nickel, zinc and silver. You can test for silver by just cupelling your lead to see what's leftover. And the white smoke while you were cupelling is indicative of zinc contamination.

Professionally, major industrial smelters always roast the ore.
Also, they use that sulfur dioxide and use it to make sulfuric acid and then sell that.
The acid is a part of their profit margin.
Also, once you oxidize all the sulfides, all of the oxides can be dissolved with a whole host of acids which will leave pure gold behind which can literally be screened or coarsely filtered to remove the coarse sand.
Then you have such pure cons you can save up a fortune in energy and flux material for the actual smelt.

Jason was mucking off the floor. He might be picking up some residue (wire) from previous blasts by previous owners.

Hmmm interesting ? Maybe just dissolve it in nitric acid and see if there is any gold left behind, then test the solution for silver. 👍

Exactly what you would have to do. Not so simple then. It would be a lot easier to just get the flux correct the first time. A simple flux of potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate. A little glass not silica sand. Crushed glass is best and borax to thin the glass. Bring it up slowly and give it time to let the nitrate burn off the iron and other impurities. You only need the lead if not expecting much or it's an assay and you wish to collect the silver. Smelting is not assaying.

It could be nickle from the spoon on which you roasted the sulfides.

in lieu of a shot glass, the first line on a red Solo Cup is the equivalent of one ounce, which is a full shotglass.
Yes, the lines on red Solo Cups are measurements, not decorative.

Looks like your button froze. A result of opening the door too often and too low of a furnace temperature. Re cupel with clean pure Lead. Temp should be around 1850 F.

Is $6000.00 per ton a fair stand-up price for gold ore?
I have never shopped for gold ore. I've only mined my own.
Although Jason is still fumbling through his assessment of his new gold mine,(sulfides have always given him trouble). The best return is less than 1.5oz per ton. I believe. Correct me if I missed something, and he has a higher return. But if this guy's happy, then so am I.
