  • In this video I get the George Foreman Rotisserie Depopulator back out to test how well it works taking the pins off legged CPU chips. I'm also wondering if the rotisserie will get hot enough to remove the copper heat spreaders. Lets see... By popular demand, here is a link to the sort of rotisserie cooker I am using:

I recommend trying to find one in a thrift store, Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

I made a jig for my bandsaw. Really speeds up the process of cutting off the fingers. I use a metal cutting blade and it works really well. I'm still on my first blade, so I don't know how long it lasts cutting through the fiber board, but so far it's been worth it to not have to cut them by hand.

For my George Foreman Rotisserie, instead of modifying the oven, I just bought a small blanket of kaowool 1" to lay front to back over the oven after I switch it on; it gets plenty hot for RAM sticks.

Hi Mike, Great video! Got a rotisserie a couple weeks ago - but no basket. Hope to get a basket this weekend. Several people mention using a paper cutter - they work great! Been using one for 5 years. Can do 50 sticks in less than 5 minutes. Thumbs up! Take Care, Jim

For removing fingers effortlessly get yourself a metal shear. Harbor freight sells a 4" model. I can't tell if they have a larger model
Here in Canada we have Princess Auto which is like Harbor Freight but on steroids. They sell a 6" and 12" models.
I bought a 6" shear years ago and it works great for removing fingers and cutting up scrap. I just de fingered 75lbs of ram and it worked like a charm

Brother an air chizzle would do the whole lot in 2 mins no dust no heat by the time you loaded George I would be finished legs copper tops ram sticks all done I can clear a 1970s board in under 20 seconds hope this helps. Also I found if you trim legs leave in hcl for 200 hours the foils delaminate filter and store gold leaf. Like you I like out the norm recovery process awesome video Mike

Glad it worked well for you! I used high heat aluminum tape on the vents to really seal I up.

You should look for one of those paper Cutters. The one where you have a big lever blade that comes straight down. I've seen close cut finger done with & it looks easy

Get a sheet metal sheer, $80 well worth it to trim fingers.

In my head I can picture some kind of turnkey system powered by solar power, using a Fresnel lens and a rotisserie system feeding onto a magnetic belt separating the components and dropping them onto a gravity classifier sorting them into separate buckets depending on the material's density. That would be epic! @joemyheck1 #solardeathray

Looks like we don't have George foreman here. So have another idea.

Could always try an old school paper cutter for that ram. The kind with the arm you lift and bring down on the paper, always worrying about chopping your finger off in.

Hey food for the thought, what if you add a hand full of small gravel to the basket. That way it bangs against what ever you have in there will knock it loose quicker. Just curious if that might help with the separation process. Stay safe and see you on the next video.

Commented to early, you need to get a table top band saw with a fine tooth blade and run those finger cards across it and remove the gold fingers without using those snips. Not sure how quick it will make the process, but thinking out loud. Lol

How about a small guillotine paper cutter to trim the fingers?

Black fibre chips (Pentium, Pentium MMX and early Centrino), the pins are mounted inside small holes going through the board. Almost impossible to remove unless you mechanically pull it while you heating it.
Ceramic chips, the legs are brazed on before they add the gold plating. You need at least a torch to remove those pins.

What is your preferred process for the gold pins off of those pinned CPUs?

I'll probably use poor man's nitric acid. A nitrate salt plus sulfuric acid to dissolve away the base metals. There is some risk of producing metastannic acid if the pins are bronze.

@@omegageek64 I believe that’s what I am dealing with right now I used dilute nitric and it formed a really nasty brownish mud that I’m working on processing

Great video. Kind of going back to the beginning again! Whatever happened to the bandsaw that you used to use to cut the fingers off of cards and boards? Did it go through blades too fast? Or have you decided that the fiberglass dust was too much to handle or deal with? Looking forward to the next video! Thank you.

    • @omegageek64

Yeah, it's rough on blades, and the fiberglass dust is rough on me. I still use it sometimes.

I ran a bunch that way. Left with lots of mucus as well. Say If you were a weed smoker in your day you know how to separate the seeds. Same technique works here. So I heard

Mike, do yourself a favor and get a paper cutter. I promise you will be happy you did.
