  • There is no doubt, after years of raising chickens and having wonderful broody hens, the Silkie, by far, takes the title of the best broody. They are amazing! I do feel you need to assist them once they have to turn the switch over to being a mama hen but nothing beats these girls! Let's take another look!
Enjoy & thanks for watching! xo

I know you probably have a reason for not having this breed of chicken but Cochins are VERY good for broody mom as and good for fostering eggs and I've heard they're good for fostering chicks with no mama.We have a blue splashed Cochin who is currently VERY broody on in fertilized eggs. When we let them out to free range she only comes off the eggs for a drink of water, a little food, and a big broody poop.(If u have no reason not to) You should really consider getting Cochins. We had just got a few months ago a white Cochin and a partridge cochin and they are just as sweet and tame as silkies. We just sometimes have to separate them from the group for a while because they get bullied😕.Our Cochin get very broody and are very sweet and tame. The Cochin roosters are supposably quiet crowers and are supposed to be just as sweet as hens.Hope I helped you out!Love your channel! Thanks for all the good information!!!💗

Sarah Ingram Ours (Named Quibbles) does the same thing! We have a white one (starbright) and she did the same thing as well. And by goly, every time a chicken walked into the coop she had this terrible screech that made you chuckle😂Our partridge(Kae Kè) hasn't been broody but our other too have and they are just so sweet to me but they go crazy on this other chickens when they come inside😁.

Yes I am a fan of cochins for setters they do make excellent mothers. I have raised silkies and of course they make excellent mother's as well. I believe the silky six more often then the Cochin bantam, so I cross the two together and I got great benefits from it. I believe that this cross of Cochin / silky had more feathers and could keep more chicks warm. I've had silkies to hatch out in the winter time out in the barn, but I don't recommend it, it's just food for thought. I think the silkie Cochin cross grow up and make a nice looking chicken, myself. But more so I like the cross for setters. Give me your feedback if you would please.

I wonder why there is such a rarity of broodiness in other chicken breeds? But I"m happy for your broody silkies that get to fulfill that strong instinct in hatching chicks of all breeds. And I love your tenderness in the way you're so caring about them that you cover the bin so they feel more private. I'm a loving person but I wouldn't have thought to do many of the compassionate things you do for your animals.

AW, so adorable. Thanks for sharing. I absolutely love Silkies. Since they are in the house and away from their flock members, how do you incorporate the mamas back into your flock? How does the flock accept the new chicks?

I think you have never had Aseels. Aseels are the best mothers in the chicken world. They are not only extremely determined broodies but are also great guardian for the chicks. She protects her chicks very aggressively even roosters do not mess with them

Best mom I ever had was a fighting bantam, she went broody alot but more important No other hen or rooster would go near her babies as she would attack them.

Have you put eggs with a silkie that isnt brood yet? and hope in a few days or so she will turn broody since she has all the eggs with her? what is the longest you will collect eggs to offer to a hen to hatch? thanks for the help just getting started and trying to figure out what to do. I love how you brought the egg/hens inside i will definitely try that too

Hey!! I’ve been following you for a while now and love the channel!! I have a quick question! I have a hen that is laying on a clutch of eggs but where she is at, it’s not safe for her or baby chicks! Can I move her and eggs somewhere else safer and her still lay on them after I move her

    • @ciasarah376

Yes but move her at night.

Have your French Black Copper Marans gone broody? I've never seen such a broody breed. Of my 12 FBCM's, 8 of them have gone broody and they're only 13 months old. I was going to buy some silkies for this very reason, but now I don't need to after these Marans have been so broody.

My young silky hen has started laying eggs, but hasn't become broody. I left her first 3 eggs in the box. When she lays an egg, the rooster encourages her to sit on them by physically blocking her from exiting the box. But her broody instinct hasn't yet kicked in. What can I do to encourage her to become broody?

What would be the drawback to keeping the broody hens working by swapping out the chicks with new fertilized eggs and putting the chicks into an brooder?
That way you could expand your flock like you want to without taking your layers out of production or getting a new incubator.

All I can say is if she is doing all that, she would have to go. My brother had a production red hen that thought she was a rooster, but eating the little ones is going too far.

If that was my chicken it be in a time out( it would be inside for a week no free ranging and no treats or friends when there out side in the back yard and she's in a cage chirping for me to let her with them) but I would never make her soup chickens are friends not food! ( I don't like 🍗)

Actually up home (northern Adirondacks) having hens and chicks in the kitchen is the norm due to the winter temps dropping to the 30-40 below zero range. In the old houses, kitchens are huge -- 20x20 or larger -- and it was not unusual to find cages of hens and chicks near the wood stove. As they got older tho they would transition out to an attached shed and eventually out to the barn.

Is there anyway that u can kinda get ur hen to go broody?

    • @ricwoodie1779
      @ricwoodie1779 7 років тому +1

Depending on what breed you have, I have found that if you leave the eggs in the nest, the hens will get the urge to go broody. There are certainly some that just don't go broody, but if there is a broody desire built in the eggs will trigger it.

Hi, I am doing a project about Appalachia for my multicultural class at Ohio state University. I found your youtube channel and I think you can be a great resource for my project. Is it possible to contact you to ask for an interview? My focus will be on the economy of Appalachia region.
It would also be lovely and helping if anyone from the comment section would willing to be my source too. Thank you.
