  • So many homesteaders want to brood their own babies with a broody hen. But it's not always as simple as setting her in a nesting box and letting her go. Here are the steps you need to take to efficiently set and keep a broody hen.

    When I was young , I used to use some tricks to make the hens turn broody . my mom would tell me to go make some hens broody .
    i would grab a chair and head into the coop . I would set my chair by the nest boxes and wait for one of the hens I wanted to get broody . When the hen would get in the nest box , I would start talking to them and petting them . After 3 days , the hens mom needed would be broody .
    Mom would move the girls to the broody house and load the eggs under them .
    We also had a rooster that

    Thanks, Amy! I have a broody right now, and I noticed a potential broody who wouldn't leave the nesting box when I went out this morning to collect eggs. Perfect timing for this very informative video.

    Oh wow, glad I found you on UA-cam. I'm a new subscriber now! Can't believe I never seen u on here as much as I'm searching for chicken and homestead stuff!
    You've got great, detailed info.
    I believe we have a broody hen right now, 2 days so far....I'm going to try to relocate her due to nesting spaces. (We have 3 boxes, and 9 chickens lol), so she gotta move.
    Guess I will try the moving her during day method. (Night would not work, due to our size of our coop) Our 1st time with this experience, so I'm very excited and hoping we get some chicks!!!
    Looking forward to watching all your videos!

    Excellent video and advice!
    Now I understand that I have a soft broody and what to do. She did hatch a surprise batch in the middle of winter, shocked the heck out of me coming out from UNDER the nesting boxes with 13 fat winter babies. She just went broody but is nor ready to set, goes from nest to nest as others chase her out. I have set up an are for her, but will have to do it at night. In the day, she was very upset and wanted to just go back to the nests

    I have my first broody hen. I have a large coop but am concerned about one of my roosters. He is more of an aggressive rooster. I keep him because he is really a great protector of the hens but I am concerned about when to introduce the chicks to the whole flock. I will be setting up brooding station in the coop. I built a wall incl. wire to divide the coop. My question is do I need to be concerned about the rooster?

    Hi, very nice video. I hope everything went well with ur pregnancy and new baby 🍼 . I have a broody that gets off the nest and never goes back to it. She always goes to another spot and sits and then I have to go and put the eggs under her. Does this happen? And that this mean that she is not a good broody? I already tried to change her and put her in a dog kennel but she completely lost it. She went nuts as soon as she realized she was not near the egg laying / nest area for the coop and she would just not sit on the eggs. This went on from the morning until the afternoon when I started to get concerned for the eggs so I gave in and put her back where she was. However, she keeps doing the same everyday; she would get off to her business but never return to her nest. Do u have any idea whats going on?

      Generally she’s not truly broody then. She’d like to think she is, but she isnt. It doesn’t mean she won’t eventually be good at it, though! If she is young, this is also common

    Thank you for this video!! I started a broody hen on some expensive hatching eggs and she seemed to loose interest. I dont think I waited long enough to see if she was actually broody :( She seems to be broody if I keep her locked in her cat kennel nest, but when I let her out twice a day to eat, drink, etc she doesn't go back in by herself. How long do they normally leave their nest? Can I just keep doing this and have her hatch them and then brood them myself if she doesn't want anything to do with it at that point? She has also broken 5 out of the 15 eggs I gave her :( Any advice for me? I really want at least some to hatch and I dont have a incubator. Thank you!!!

    • @TheFewellHomestead
      @TheFewellHomestead  5 років тому +2

      She sounds like a soft broody who gets distracted. Depending on the temps where you are, broodies will spend anywhere from 10 minutes to 20 minutes off of their nest when you let them out to eat, drink, and do their thing. In the summer time I've had broodies go 30 minutes off the nest. Consider that in nature, you'll often see geese and other birds leave their nests for extended periods of time when it's warmer out, and the babies hatch just fine.
      As far as breaking the eggs, that could be a bedding issue. Make sure she has plenty of soft bedding under the eggs, and that she doesn't have too many eggs under her. 15 eggs is typically a lot of eggs. We normally only hatch no more than 12 at a time, and most of the time it's less than that (like 8).
      If you want her to brood, you may need to separate her from the flock completely, and then move her back into the coop (separately) with her chicks for transition after they hatch.

    • @WilsonHomestead
      @WilsonHomestead 5 років тому

      @@TheFewellHomestead Should I try to seeing how long it takes her to go back by herself? On a warm day.
      I'll add more straw today incase that's the issue :)
      She is in a separate area but still inside their yard. She has a 4 by 5 chain link pen where I have her food, water, herbs and dust bath. And then inside that is a cat kennel that I keep her locked in a lot. So the other hens dont bother her at all but they'll still see each other for easy reintegration :) Does that sound like a ok setup?

    Thanks for the info "If you don't tell people they have illness they are going to die". We all have the greatest illness which is failure of purpose and identity, we all lie, steal, lust-watching porn(which is equal to committing adultery) and hate(equal to murder) and just like a judge who judges offenders so will God judge you but God made a way for you through jesus christ who paid your fine just like someone pays your fine in a court and you are free to leave and so did jesus pay your fine, believe in jesus and repent(change your ways) God will grant you everlasting life as a free gift, Joh 3:16-19 GW 16 God loved the world this way: He gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but to save the world. 18 Those who believe in him won't be condemned. But those who don't believe are already condemned because they don't believe in God's only Son. 19 This is why people are condemned: The light came into the world. Yet, people loved the dark rather than the light because their actions were evil. I Am not supporting religion, mormonism, catholicism, etc but about life when you read the bible you will find a huge difference between the bible and religion Please watch this video it will make more sense ua-cam.com/video/ChWiZ3iXWwM/v-deo.html
