- recorded straight from my laserdisc player to the computer. this is from one of many rare Genesis laserdiscs i have. it's a cover song medley they break into during Turn it on Again in 1984. lots of good stuff in here!
Clearly they were having fun both the band and audience and doing karma chameleon as part of it at the time of its popularity is AWESOME. This performance is far more rememorable than Culture Club. Phil Collins is very very talented and I think it's great that he is down to earth with a sense of humor and loves to make people laugh and entertain. He is the BEST!! Gabriel left the band for the better man to take over and that is the best thing he could've ever done for Genesis.
0:13 Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (Solomon Burke / The Blues Brothers)
0:50 I Can't Get No Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones)
1:10 Twist And Shout (The Isley Brothers / The Beatles)
1:48 All Day And All Of The Night (The Kinks)
2:04 Baby Let Me Take You Home (The Animals)
2:19 Karma Chameleon (Culture Club)
3:01 Every Breath You Take (The Police)
3:21 Pinball Wizard (The Who)
3:55 In The Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett)
I watched this 1000 times as a kid. So rad.
Lighten up folks - a brief coda (4 and a bit minutes total) on the end of a song called "Turn it on Again"!!! Very clever, funny and entertaining - many bands would do something like this live notably Van Morrison at the end of Real Real Gone. A great live moment and only adds to the impact of Turn it On Again.
I love Genesis, I love Phil Collins & i Love this medley!! Genesis & Collins 4ever!
The MAN !
"I can't imagine Peter Gabriel or Steve Hackett doing this crap! I"
Peter Gabriel covered "I'll Be There," by the Four Tops and "Ain't That Peculiar".
He also covered All Day and All of the Night on his first tour
There's a recording of Genesis doing a medley of 60's Stones covers during the Selling England By the Pound sessions too.
Euchrid Eucrow, Gabriel also had crap songs also. It's been 50 years ago don't think it's time to get over already?
this is bloody epic i mean wow this has left me speechless incredible
I saw a similar medley within Turn it in again in the summer of 1987 in Budapest. It was astonishing and incredible to see the ones I'd been adoring for 12 years from far, beyond the iron courtain, moreover to hear them playing my childhood favourites!
These are (mostly) the songs Genesis grew up on, and which got them into rock music. Why wouldn't they want to play them? Some very strange comments below from people who seem to think The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and The Animals are bad pop bands.
Fantastic!
This is great! I have the 87 Live at Wembley dvd and I prefer that medley better. It’s much faster and has more songs in it.
a few weeks ago I was thinking if Phil/Genesis would make some kind of reference to Pinball Wizard, then I found this melody
awww, love it ! This & from invisible touch tour medleys are simply THE BEST in my opinion. btw. you should record full song, cause it makes a difference, if you put just part of it :) but anyway I still love it ! :) best regards for you my friend !
Wow, this version of "Pinball Wizard" sounds better than the original!
You have a good point there. Even if I think this video is pretty fun. But Gabriel hadn't did his amazing solo stuff if he hadn't leave Genesis, and Genesis hadn't been such a well known group because of their later pop songs. I really wonder how the the group would sound if Hackett still had been in the band.
Thx a lot for sharing this. Never seen it. ty ty ty
Crikey! Never thought I'd hear Genesis cover Karma Chameleon!
They sang satisfaction in wembley 87...i loved it
Lots of good stuff indeed. Some folks are impossible to please. Phil and the whole team presented a melody composed of a range of massive hits by massive other talents .... live!! All that at the end of a demanding performance apparently.. . Made a good job of them all considering it was at the close of the show. Few other artists could do justice to such a wide range of other massive classic songs so well. A what's not to like bonus for those at the event.
+MG John Egg fucking sactly
Queen Anne
They didn’t need to. In any way. No
Collins was an incredible Frontman. Imagine he had to starve behind his drums all of his life.
btw if you doubt Phil Collins credibility as a musicain...not a singer but as a musician...just remember all the performances he made as a drummer...live aid etc etc...and it wasnt just because he was PC....man can play
Great! This is my favored band! Tony rulez!
Holy crap! Was that Twist and Shout? It actually sounds bearable.
@degree7 HaHaHa.... Phil didn't really "need" Genesis to make through, his solo career was huge. Collins even helped Gabriel out with one of his albums.
The Collins haters will always exist because they can't stand the fact that Gabriel wasn't needed and Genesis became huge after he left and so did Collins.
Fact, Phil Collins and Genesis made more defining records in the 80's than Gabriel could even with Collins help!!
"You sing them the way I do but you don't perform them the way I do"
- Peter Gabriel to Phil Collins during the "six of the best" concert.
Epic as in Phil doesn't dress in elaborate costumes that make it nearly impossible to get near enough to the mic to sound good.
Don't get me wrong I like Gabriel but i honestly do not think Genesis ever would've become as huge as they did and i would have been surprised if they even made it as a band into the 80's.
Phil collins is far more talented and way more entertaining than Gabriel.
My opinion is Phil can perform some of the Gabriel era stuff better than Gabriel!!!
Phil is doing one Man Blues Brother's😃😃0:14
Indeed a weird performance, especially Karma Cameleon..😁
2:21
"You come and go". Just like Culture Club!
Pinball wizard is in my top 10 non genesis songs. Genesis is my favourite all time band. The moment when the two were combined sales only about a fifth as epic as it should have been. Oh well, they are still the best band ever.
Sorry, seems not sales, useless auto correct is useless
Really? I thought it was awesome. They jammed that!
Sorry, I agree with him. It is like a Pizza with all the toppings thrown into a blender and then eating the mashed mud that comes out. Don't know what was their point for doing it.
This is OK but there is so much better stuff out there. I seen this band countless times and have never ever been disappointed
@degree7
yeah a sellout, sells out every show not in small venues either... stadiums that hold 50,000 or more people in most cases. He can do that with Genesis and as solo and did and still can. I like Gabriel as i've said before i just prefer Collins and it's my opinion that he is more talented.
So we have a difference in opinion, i don't think that is any reason to tell me to burn in hell....
mejor estaba el in the cage medley tocado en ESE MISMO RECITAL!!!
This is 12 years ago. Any way the OP can re-rip it at HD resolutions?
I can't do HD, because it was never released in HD but I can definitely get better quality than this now.
It's 36 years ago.
Lessi is a babe
Instead of a Turn it on Again medley with other people's music, they should have been playing The Fountain of Salmacis. This is stupid and dumb. I called The Larry King show in 1992. Genesis was the guest. I called and complained about this. Mike said after 2 hours of intense music it's a way of bring the audience down. He can say that again. Miami Orange Bowl show in 1987, the paper said although alot of the crowd liked this medley it wasn't near the grabber it should have been.
@degree7 On Melt... in Hell, You recall that album
Is that all you have to say... sounds like grade school playground talk
The time it took to sing this they could of performed something worth listening to
Not sure of any 4 1/2 minute songs that would fit at that point of the show - maybe a condensed "Supper's Ready"?!?!?
That was great fun! Can't believe how triggered people are in the comments. I guess Genesis aren't allowed to have some fun.
Probably 99% of the people in the audience would have prefered if the band had used the few minutes of the extended Turn It On to play an old song (e.g. Squonk) rather than wasting them on playing covers by Stones and Kinks no-one needs to have from Genesis.
@kingcrimson234 Watcher of the skies still rules
@erock8469
Gabriel wery clearly left for personal reasons and the growing tension within the band. Know your Genesis man....
Nota
@ForceMaximus84 lol
@degree7
such a troll? You're unbelievable!
Phil Collins did drum work on Gabriel..look it up if you like.
If you have read my comment the uploader of this video responded to you know my opinion of the video, and in response to his comment is what got you all bent out of shape.
I guess if you really think this video is that bad and that Banks, Collins, and Rutherford butchered Genesis then we disagree and just a thought maybe stop watching stuff you dislike.
WHO doubts his credibility as a muscian??
Brits again.
"Gabriel left the band for the better man to take over"
Oh, um... That's cute.
Was this the tour where Phil was high on drugs? Still interesting to hear... and sad to watch, i just don't want to see Phil Collins dance ever again and to make a song where he says that he can't dance, that would make sense... oh wait.
Obvious mixer-mix - wouldv'e fared much better with some post production...
this is crap. one or two would've been pretty cool like a "haha he sung the blues brothers in the middle of TIOA" but the novelty wears off pretty quickly. I'd be annoyed if I'd gone to see Genesis and they fucked about doing this rather than, say, Cinema Show.
That's an old soul song, I think it was Soloman Burke?
horrible.
I hate this. Phil has more fun singing, (dancing?)...to anything but his own bands music. Awful.
I love Genesis......but this is shite.
You are a sad person
I can't imagine Peter Gabriel or Steve Hackett doing this crap! I think this went too far and that's why Genesis doesn't exist anymore... OH! By the way, they could've played some Barney or the Teletubbies, it would've been much better for Tony, Mike and Phill !!!
What about Peter Gabriel dressed in the slippermen costume? That was worst that this.
No no no. This is unlistenable. Simply not necessary to their set back then. Why they did it Christ only knows. 😕
Terrible. Embarrassingly awful.
Genesis fan.
I want to cut my eyes out
Seriously?
Such a waste
