There's multiple seed banks around the world tho, this is just the largest and arguable safest location.
StealthyMonk it’s built to last. They have thought of a lot of doomsday situations and the design of this vault can withstand humanity’s violence. Inside of each box from what I’ve read has instructions on how to grow and maintain the crops in case of a disaster too. Search it up and you will see the amount of effort they put into protecting these seeds.

@arnold jayeola When you're born in the north, I'm sure it's pretty easy to get used to, I mean this vault is in Svalbard (google it if you're curious of where it is) and look what he's wearing. Even though I'm Swedish, my face would hurt from the cold to not even have a scarf or ski mask covering my mouth/nose area unless its summertime there.

I've only just started watching this, but in a previous documentary the explanation was that they specified the maximum dimensions for storage. Most countries had plastic or tupperware style containers but the North Koreans had boxes made to the exact dimensions

I know the vault itself is a backup, but I wonder if they have an emergency plan to preserve these seeds in case the vault is threatened by a geological, astronomical or similar event.

They weren't sent to Aleppo. They were sent to locations in North Africa, to be planted in safe conditions, so that they can grow more seeds both for Svalbard and any future seed bank in Aleppo once the war dies down.

For those who don’t know the seed vault got flooded because of permafrost melt which aloud heavy rains to get in. When scientists created the vault they had no idea global warming would melt the permafrost in the area so they never made the vault flood proof. Luckily the actual room containing the seeds was not breached.

I think that because this is a community seed vault security isn’t that big of a concern I guess but I know for a fact that some of the seed banks that you don’t hear about like some of the ones the us has have a ton of security and many people don’t know they exist or where they are

@ preston I watched a longer documentary about the seed bank and looked into inventory about a year ago. They said they didn't want cannabis seeds because they are illegal in many places and don't want any trouble from police. might have changed now though!

A seed vault is certainly a very important "backup plan". I am wondering, though, what's the plan for important trees that only grow from cuttings, for example olive trees.
