A slate us all you need
I use pot calls more as I can run them better and have more confidence in them. However watch someone like David Halloran run a box call and you can see what a good box is capable of. One thing I noticed is that you should never lift the lid of the box when yelping. A box can do everything a pot call can plus you can get a good gobble on a box call. Also regarding the chalk, you have to use wax free chalk on turkey calls or you could ruin them. Don't just use whatever chalk you find. Lastly I don't think there is or ever will be one best type of call, the best call there is, is what that turkey wants to hear that day. Get proficient with as many as you can and there are tons of options, box, pot, diaphragm, push pin, scratch box, trumpet, wing bone, nail call......
15:29 - Don't use sandpaper on a striker tip, only a scotchbrite pad. The sandpaper will remove too much material and is too flat. It will change the profile of the rounded striker tip which make the striker slip more often. I've spoken with call makers about this and they 100% say never sandpaper on the tip for the exact reason you mentioned here. It can ruin a striker. You need something just abrasive enough to remove the glass/slate that clogs the pores of the wood tip.
Box call for broadcasting, slate for closing the deal.

Box call can gobble. I can’t believe no one said that…sometimes that’s what you need to get that gobbler to fire back, if you can only have one the box call is the best for that reason.
I put my box call in a beer can cozey to keep it quiet. Easy to slide on and off.

While I can appreciate a slate and a box call the best turkey call is a mouth reed. Cons are it takes more skill to make a wider variety of sounds. Pros are less accessories ,no chalk, Brillo pads, sandpaper, rubber bands, or strikers required. Less movement for when the birds get closer. Ability to make non turkey noises. Non weather sensitive if it freezes put it in your pocket, if it rains who cares. No one ever plays with some one else’s mouth reeds. I can appreciate all and own them as well, if I could only take one the mouth reed is it.
Just popped Inn to thank you, for the info on what used to be a real phenomenon of over stabilised bullets no longer being an issue due to precision bullet manufacture - iin Barrels - the most important part of your gun? 1 year ago. So a 9.5" twist 7mm necked up 6.8 Western, will work fine with lighter bullets. Excellent info on potential already. ❤

There is NO excuse not to carry a box call! What sounds good to our ears, may not sound good to a gobbler
I only bring two slate calls...one slate and one glass...that's all I need
Eric makes that slate sing, but I'm with Mark. I prefer the box call and have good success with it.
I started with a slate call, but in the couple of seasons I've started to take a shine to wing-bone calls.
