    I just to say I was prescribed a statin and I didn’t take it. I waited to see what my next bloodwork showed. The levels were in normal range. Months later I told the doctor I wasn’t taking tthem. He was annoyed with me. He said everyone should be on statins. Needles to say, I never went back. As long as I control what I eat, my levels are great. Thank you for your very informative podcast.

    Wow. What an insightful and balanced convo. I am a 3rd year medical student and I am absolutely appalled by the state of health in American and the corruption of the medical field by big pharma and insurance (to name a few). It’s all about money. I have been listening to Casey and Callie means, you, Vinay prasad, Marty makary, Suneel dhand, Wendy dean, etc, because this TRUTH is the only hope I have for staying in this field. I am so concerned about my future. I cannot in good conscience simply follow algorithm, drug pushing medicine when I KNOW there any many root causes of disease. Pills have their place but they have swallowed medicine whole! (pun intended). I don’t know which way to go for residency and beyond. NO ONE at my institution is up to date with this. If you mention anything remotely alternative you get mocked and chastised. I really wish there was a group for doctors who actually think critically about these things and know the truth!! I need a mentor!

      @@c.m.8776 Bless you for going beyond what is taught in medical school. If you have read Dr Means book Good Energy you know that chronic inflammation is the driver of most chronic illnesses ( heart disease , Cancer Diabetes). But there is not a drug to treat an elevated hsCRP so ....😞😓💔 I highly recommend podcasts by Dr Robert Lustig about how our ultraprocessed food supply is spiked with sugar and that the OD on sugar (especially liquid sugar) is the cause of the huge number of obese/ overweight Americans. ( Fructose is a mitochondrial poison). Highly recommend Dr. Rob Lustig 's lectures esp for a med student. Hang in there , we e need people like you. Recommend also Dr Lustigs book " Metabolical ". He explains that the cellular changes causing American Health issues are not druggable , they are only treatable by eating whole foods. Good luck ,🥰😍🤩❤️💪🖖live long and prosper

    Yes to lifestyle change instead of medication. I'm 66 and spent 120 days switched to a whole-food plant-based diet. Decreased cholesterol 27 % (243 to 177) LDL by 40% (172 to 103) A1C: 6.1 to 5.9, CRP: .8 to .2, APoB : 122 to 86. Cholesterol ratio from 4.1 to 3.2. I know I'm crowing but I was so heartened! I can definitely keep up this lifestyle. (Oh and I forgot to mention weight loss without trying. 😀)

    I am just starting to listen in, but I have already known this for as long as I remember: I will NEVER resort to taking any type of pills on a daily basis. For me, any medication, even a painkiller for a headache, is a last resort that I will avoid at all costs.
    The pharma industry’s main goal is not our long-term health, but generating ever increasing profits for their shareholders. How? By getting people to take more and more drugs daily for the rest of their lives. It reminds me of how smokers become lifelong prisoners of tobacco companies.
    The notion that these companies are honest and transparent about side effects, long-term effects, and other related issues is fundamentally contradictory to their very existence. It is far more likely that they will continue to lie about the truth about these topics for as long as they can get away with it. Just as tobacco companies lied for decades, or how food companies engineer hyper-palatable ultra-processed foods that lead people to overea, then get sick, obese, infertile, etc. over time.
    I will live and die on my own terms for as long as life lasts. I truly believe that no pill on earth can improve your well-being better than a healthy lifestyle can. This includes consuming whole, unprocessed foods that don’t have labels or advertising budgets attached to it, exercising regularly, enough quality sleep, fostering meaningful relationships, and managing stress.

    Just look at the % of the health budgets spent on prevention. In the USA it's 3%, UK is less than 5%......I was immediately prescribed a statin for a T2D diagnosis and never took it. Instead I took a path of diet and lifestyle change and reversed the disease. More than a decade on I'm still not on a statin and in full health. A GP told me that GPs prescribe statins because the vast majority of people will never show the discipline required to take the natural approach. And all the time big pharma rolls on

    I'm guessing this cycle of drugs-academia-money is going to start coming undone. In almost every conversation I have with friends about health or nutrition, somebody is quick to say, there's no money in...vitamins, supplements, healthy food, etc. People are catching on. They don't like the expense and hate the side effects of prescription drugs. And when changing your life style and taking supplements makes you feel good, nobody wants the expensive crap that hurts.

Here is my question-If a person has definite coronary plaque/atherosclerosis, YET that individual has never experienced a cardiovascular event (i.e. MACE, heart attack, stroke), is that person catagorized as in PRIMARY PREVENTION or SECONDARY PREVENTION?

    • @paulasykes4690
      @paulasykes4690 Годину тому

      Yes. Per the doctors. You could do a Dietary change and if you would like to take a statin mainly for inflammation. It would be your choice. Which is primary prevention.

    I sincerely wish Dr Hyman would work on enunciating more clearly. Have some speech therapy perhaps. I can often barely understand his points and can only do so in context because of the slurring of syllables together. It does not help to slow the speed of the video because he doesn’t articulate properly.
    There is too much to say that’s critically important for him to slur his way through the points.

He swallows entire syllables: skips right over them. “Cardiovascular”, for example, becomes “carvaslar”. That one I can readily understand because of the context and the syllables he does pronounce are a part of the familiar word he probably means. In other points I’m not already familiar with, it’s a lot of work to replay and interpret.
