The letter to the lanldady was a collage of the other letters each had background sounds when read so the patchwork letter is jumping from sound to sound each cut

@@theotothefuture it's the beauty of those "artsy" movies, they are so thought through that you can watch them 1000 times and still discover things. Not A to B but the journey type of mindset

The grocer, Colignon, is a bully, who constantly picks on his sweet-natured assistant, Lucien. Amelie booby-traps Colignon's apt. in revenge for his ill-treatment of Lucian. (Everybody hates Colignon.) Amelie entrusted her father's gnome to her friend, the airline hostess (whose cat she takes care of). The friend photographs the gnome in all the cities she flies to, and mails the photos to Amelie's dad. This is a wonderful movie, but those of us who don't speak French really have to pay close attention to the subtitles. That makes it especially challenging for reaction bloggers, who need to talk to their audience as they watch and read. All we have to do is watch, of course, so it's much easier. I saw you miss things while you were talking. (I've seen this film many times, and can only imagine what it must have been like for you, juggling all those plates at once.) I wouldn't have done anywhere near as well as you did, the first time. But I hope you watch this again some day, when you can give it your full attention. I think you'll find it's worth it.

Beautiful comment! Thank you for the clarifications and the empathy 🙏🏾 I'll definitely watch it again. It's a movie I would bring up/recommend for a movie night with some of my friends if the opportunity arose.

The way to watch Amelie, is just to go with the flow, swept along by Yann Tiersen's wonderful music. It's magical realism, it's not meant to be realistic.

This is my very favorite foreign movie--done in the French New Wave style. You asked about the weather--wondering if it was done on sets. No. It was mostly filmed in the area of Paris known as Montmartre. Whenever I'm in Paris, I visit Montmartre and visit the grocery store that is in this movie. And Sacre Coeur, the large while cathedral often shown in the background. Love this movie.

They are really picturesque settings. That's amazing you got to visit some of the places from this in real life. I've been to Paris once but I could never remember the exact places. It was a while ago.

It's been a long time since I took a film class but I don't think this would count as French New Wave, too much effects and stuff

The girl in the middle of the picture is Amelie ("She never played with children when she was little."). The old man keeps darkening the girl's hair throughout the film; in the last shot of the film, the girl in the painting has hair as black as Amelie's. The talking pictures on the wall on Amelie's bedroom and the talking photographs on Nino's lamp are their inner monologues, their thoughts.
You said that at the beginning - those little things, little joys, and kid's colourful imaginative observation of the world. The whole movie is presented through this kid's imagination.

If you wonder about the creepy scene .... there's an easter egg from Alien 4 with Ripley and the alien boohing her over her shoulder the same way ... Jean-Pierre JEUNET is the film director in both those movies :)

There is an element of play in her social interactions, that’s why it feels smooth even though she is a shy girl. She has her “stratagem”, so she feels more confident (it’s my take on that)…
However I prefer not to rationalise this movie much, it’s too much of an artistic fairytale for me)

52:39 "But the future of Amelie's relationship with Nino. Ninio?. What about that? ... Is that relationship going to last? Cause she is really quirky and so is he (Nino) and when those two quirks get together with their _quirkiness_ is that even going to... is that going to... is that gonna work?"
OMG their kid is gonna be so annoying, isn't it? It's gonna be like if Zooey Deschanel and Shia Laboeuf reproduced.

Theo, you kept overlooking many clues to her motivation due to missing the subtitles. The Grocer is mean to the semi-retarded assistant. The painter is a recluse who is obsessed with one painting by a famous 19th century French artist who he idolizes and even dresses like him. He copies one of his paintings over and over trying to finally capture the essence of a specific young female figure who comes to symbolize the unfulfilled Amelie in his eyes. Meanwhile Amelie sneaks him video cassettes of unusual fascinating events to show him unique experiences. She wants to motivate her dad to get away & get on with life so she makes fake pictures of the Gnome traveling the world. She plays matchmaker for the neurotic restaurant couple who are frustrated and lonely. The sad neighbor lady who is heartbroken over her missing soldier lover receives the fake rediscovered old letter from him that Amelie created. Obviously you eventually figured out that the painter is also trying to help Amelie solve her own loneliness by encouraging her to go after the photobooth Nerd who is obsessed over the numerous ripped photos of a mysterious man who turns out to be the booth repairman. Even the Writer customer in the restaurant is made to feel reinspired. CLEVER very well crafted creatively visualized story of charming lonely people being helped in charming entertaining intriguing ways by the charming & precocious Amelie.
