It's important to note that when slavery was overthrown and a republic declared, the slave-owning areas of USA were afraid of Haiti's example. That's when the USA ended the importation of slaves, but kept slavery. People born enslaved are less likely to revolt. The USA actively worked to keep Haiti isolated and in poverty.

I am a world history teacher that teaches about the Haitian Revolution and its aftermath. This short film corroborates everything I have researched on the subject.
Before Toussaint L’Ouverture declared the free constitution of Haiti on 7 July 1801, and in order to increase his sphere of power, he decided to invade the east side of the island of Hispaniola with 25,000 men the 26 of January of 1801, in fact, Toussaint's army did not ended slavery in the colony committing numerous atrocities and as a consequence, the Spanish population fled from Hispaniola in exodus proportions, but in February of 1802 the French general Charles Lecler, who was married to the sister of Napoleon I, Pauline Bonaparte, arrived in the Cap-Haitienne, Haiti with a navy fleet of 86 warships and over 80,000 troops to impose control of the island. The expedition successfully imprisoned Toussaint L’Ouverture who was sent to France to die there in 1803 ending the first Haitian invasion of Santo Domingo that lasted only one year. Toussaint invasion of Santo Domingo was produced claiming the treaty or peace of Basel of 1795 in which the whole island of Hispaniola was given to the French by the Spanish. The future Haitian constitutions that follow would legalize and legitimize control over the whole island based on the previous French constitution of the 3rd of July 1801 that stipulated French ownership over the entire Island of Hispaniola and promoting the theory of the “indivisibility of the island under Haitian rule.” When Toussaint L’Ouverture was taken in captivity his lieutenant Jean Jacques Dessalines replaced him. Dessalines was a cruel ruthless general who declared himself emperor of Haiti, naming himself Jacques I of Haiti from 1804-1806. After the defeat of the French army by the Haitians during the Haitian revolution in 1804 in Haiti, a reduced portion of the French army stayed in Santo Domingo, the east part of the island still under French control. In 1805 Dessalines and Henri Christophe unsuccessfully invaded Santo Domingo with an army of 21,000 men facing general Jean Louis Ferrand who resisted the invasion for three weeks with only 2,000 soldiers until a French naval warship landed in Santo Domingo. In his retrait from Santo Dominog, Dessalines sacked the towns of Monte Plata, Cotui and La Vega and conducting the slaughter of the majority of the population of important cities like Moca and Santiago, event that it is still well remembered in the national identity of Dominican Republic as of today with the name of the “slaughter of Moca”.

That has been difficult to do, Haiti had a burden that neither Jamaica or Bahamas had, so money could not be spent on developing the appropriate infrastructure to facilitate development.....In 1825, Haiti agreed to pay reparations to France for lost property, including enslaved people, that French owners lost in the rebellion. France threatened to invade and reimpose slavery if Haiti did not agree to pay 150 million francs, which was 30 times Haiti’s annual revenue. The payments were designed by France to be so large that it would effectively create a "double debt". Over the next century, Haiti paid French slaveholders and their descendants the equivalent of between $20 and $30 billion in today's dollars. It took Haiti 122 years to pay it off !!!!
I found your video informative and entertaining. It helped me with my project so thanks. You also draw very well. But if I can say one thing is to put more dates cause I got a little lost sometimes in the time periods.
It is such a shame because we have so many fond memories of Haiti but what is going on in Haiti now is nauseous. However, not everyone thinks Haiti is Hell and that sentiment would not just be limited to Graham Greene were he alive. Of course, Graham was one of the great writers of the 20th Century. One other ex-spook used to love Haiti until the TonTon Macoute hunted him down like a wild animal. If you relish and yearn for Haitian spy thrillers as curiously and bizarrely compelling as Graham Greene’s Comedians, yearn for the cruel stability of the Duvaliers and have frequented Hôtel Oloffson you're never going to put down Bill Fairclough's fact based spy thriller Beyond Enkription in The Burlington Files series. It's a raw noir thriller but it is so real you may have nightmares of being back in Port au Prince anguishing over being a spy on the run. The trouble is, if you were a spook being chased by the TonTon Macoute in the seventies you were usually cornered and ... well best leave it to your imagination or simply read Beyond Enkription. It’s considered compulsory reading for espionage aficionados. See theburlingtonfiles.org and if you have any questions remember the best quote from The Burlington Files to date is "Don't ask me, I'm British" but do read The Comedians first if you have not done so recently.
You left out the part where the Haitians oppressed the Dominicans for 22 years between 1822-1844 and forced them to contribute to pay the indemnity to France by over taxing them.
Majority of them became dominicans and assimilated into spanish culture through religion. Spanish offered them land and free slave status. The areas these moors lived in was spanish territory today in Dominican Republic that area is called perdernales, Azúa and Barahona. They also stood in neibu another Dominican town.
The slaves that became Haitians were those brought by the French and maybe one can say some of the moors became Haitians too but majority of Haitians are descendants of the african slaves brought by the French.
Rfpenab That's because it doesn't fit the narrative. It would make Haiti appear like a force to be reckoned with (ex: they used to also seize slave ships that were heading for the US) in the 19th century and not the poor country that is in need of NGOs and donors that really fill the pockets of these organizations and not to housing, sanitation etc. Yes they may build a school or a hospital once in a while but that's only to show face.
For so many numerous reasons, too long to expose here, I have to disagree with this "history", at least on the Dominican Republic part is concerned. It simply (I don't know if on purpose or not) ignores the history of the Dominican Republic, as if Haiti had always been the ONLY COUNTRY on the island for the whole of the XIX, XX, and XXI centuries. This video ignores that the Spanish side of the island was also there, that the Spanish colonials even got their independence from Spain and became the REPUBLIC OF SANTO DOMINGO, in 1821, only to be invaded by Haiti a year later, in 1822, occupation which lasted until 1844, when the colonials there initiated a revolt that ended with the Haitian Army pushed back to their side of the island. BTW, that of Haiti being the "first black republic" of America, lasted only A FEW MONTHS, since in 1804, more specifically, on 22 September 1804, Jean Jacques Dessalines proclaimed himself EMPEROR of Haiti, under the name Jacques I. This situation with emperors lasted until 1811. It was with these emperor that most of what happened at the beginning of Haitian history happened. This video, as you can see, shows only HAITIAN HISTORY, with the WHOLE ISLAND SHOWN AS HAITI, AS IF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC DOESN'T EVEN EXIST! But THERE IS A DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE ISLAND, and has been there since 1844, and will continue to be there, by the grace of God. And to me, this omission of the Dominican Republic on the eastern side of the island is too one-sided and too biased. That is worse than fiction, it's A LIE!
+kurchatov324 This was to be expected..a complete lie!!!! They are using the money donated to help the hatians black to create a myth rather than help their country. Many NGOs are becoming rich with the Donations made after the earthquake. But, soon they will run out out money and the International community will no longer donate a single penny to them.
This is a history of Haïti, not of Hispaniola. Complaining that a history of Haïti does not include a lot about the Dominican Republic is like complaining that a history of the U S does not include a lot about Mexico.
+Ned Hopkins Yes, BUT: When in that video they talk about Haiti, they say that "in all of Haiti slavery was this or that" AND show that THE WHOLE ISLAND is Haiti, conveniently forgetting that the eastern portion of the Island WAS NOT HAITI, but the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo. Whenever you say something about Mexico, you don't show that all of the United States is Mexico. You make very clear that to the north of Mexico there is a country called United States of America. Fortunately, most of us know that to be the case. However, in that video, whenever anything was said about Haiti, NOT even once it was shown that the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC is a DIFFERENT COUNTRY in that part of the island. And since this is not a well known fact, those who don't know it, after seeing the video ASSUME that the eastern portion of the island IS ALSO HAITI, which is a FACTUAL LIE. The Dominican Republic has had behind it 500 years of Spanish history and 171 years of independent history, sharing THE SAME ISLAND with Haiti. Not everyone would have known that just by watching the video, as it simply ignores that fact of history. And that is, to me, once again, too one sided and too-biased.

" Whenever you say something about Mexico, you don't show that all of the United States is Mexico. You make very clear that to the north of Mexico there is a country called United States of America. It was Saint Domingue, LONG before it was called Haiti by the French, and then Toussaint Louverture happened
I would be interested to know the sources you used for this video

Didn't Haiti take over the Dominican Republic in the 1800s and rules it for over 20 years? Haitian government treating the residents appallingly?
