Exclusive report from Haiti: Inside the brutal war between gangs and police in Port-au-Prince
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 тра 2024
- Haiti has been in the grips of a renewed crisis ever since heavily-armed gangs formed an alliance this February and forced Ariel Henry to step down as prime minister. Haiti has long been plagued by gang violence, with armed groups fostered in the shadows by power-hungry political and economic elites. But now more than 80 percent of Haiti’s capital is controlled by the alliance of armed groups, and they’re vowing they won’t lay down their arms unless they get a seat at the negotiating table. Left battling the gangs is Haiti’s under-resourced police, which is less well-armed than the gangs and often accused itself of rampant corruption. FRANCE 24’s Catherine Norris Trent and Roméo Langlois went on patrol with UTAG, a specially formed anti-gang unit of Haiti’s police. They bring us this exclusive report from Port-au-Prince.

The man selling the bread, hiding by a tree completely broke my heart😢
Put you support France paying for innocent people of gaza but no help for Haiti
Very sad ! You can see the terror and devastation on his face. What can they do? Those police are so scared they shoot any one they see. To say that I don't know how they are any better. He said they see someone they just shoot. It's sad what those men are going through staying no where to go.
I feel that too, man the world is crazy out there.
He seems like a nice guy😢
same
The fact that the breadman had a smile on his face shows the outlook he has on life may God bless and protect him...
F..k him he is a scout for the gangs.
Journalists never cease to amaze me. Great job guys.
In what way on fake news
No fear whatsoever, truly remarkable
@@decodedpsyopHow is it fake? Bit obvious what these people are like
Journalists eh? The same vultures who would hound you and violate your privacy just for views. Sure sure. Such admirable people.
That's paparazzi. Gossip news really. There are ethics that these journalists abide by. @TheWorkersNewspaper1994 @@TheWorkersNewspaper1994
“We don’t need to know if they’re armed. We just fire.” At what point do ‘gangs’ and ‘police’ both just become men with guns spreading misery?
That statement was wild to be honest
And he said all the civilians have fled so you can just assume everyones a gang member and shoot freely, that's not gang members i see towards the end of the video though
I'm haitian from haïti, let me tell you that they have to. 😢
@aron546 he's not wrong
Welcome to the world my son
2:45 a burning body lying on the street. Seems like its normal there
I remember going there as a child and seeing a body laying in the street. I asked my mother what he was doing laying there, she said he was drunk. It was crazy
@@marvi1515 Was he drunk or dead?
@@theotheleo6830it's not like here in the west where there's a clear difference between death or alive. Many people out there are zombies
@@theotheleo6830 prolly dead but his mother wasnt trying to traumitize him
unfortunately in some area in port au prince its normal. I saw a few bodies too when I was a child in Haiti that was in 2003 now 20+ years later its worst. If people are in a hurry they continue to go if not they stopped to watch and ask questions I just walked straight and peep and continued walking
I hope they manage to neutralize the larger gangs
the Gangs are there for the People...
@@buravan1512 there are no people left.

@@buravan1512 That’s never happened in the history of mankind, gangs exist for the benefit of their members.
Lol is that a joke
These journalist our some of the bravest souls I've ever known, I live in Haiti, I can't go near that area where the journalist is covering... Bless your soul good reporting
🥺men this sad.
Yes. Why can't Haiti be like Iceland?
Great coverage!
some of the best reporting I have ever seen
Not even close to what the UA-camr 'Arab' posted. He went to interview Barbecue, got kidnapped and spent 17 days held for ransom and vlogged the whole thing, exposed 10x as much as this documentary and showed how it really is.
Then you’re not used to much
This is really sad to watch especially at 4:52🤦🏾♂️.
This is just 1 of 27 wars being fought on this planet currently. Sad
This is very sad😢
This proves that the camera man is untouchable
Damn so sad outa there 😢
@1:50 The fact that the bandana is covering his eyes 😂
I feel for that dude who just went "This is the capital of my country". I cant imagine the pain I'd feel if my nation were brought that low.
My heart's broken for that bread man.
Why aren’t US university students protesting for Haiti?
Because they too woke for anything outside the US that doesn't benefit them
What will protesting do against organized crime?
@@novus1589you don’t get the joke here😂
This is sad
Praying for the police officers and hard working people in Haiti
Police fire anyone even without arm? That's nonsense
That Barbacue is EVIL 😡
True that...as evil as the Occupiers who have forever messed up Haiti
well its the police shooting random people in the street, arent they?
@@kirakurawachege1250 True, foreigners have missed up Haiti but Haitian politicians and elites have caused this mess. Haitians have had their independence for nearly 200 years but there are African nations who got their independence as recently as the 1960s who are doing better.
He a freedom fighter the people you rooting for are the terrorists
@@kirakurawachege1250Haiti had over 80 coups, revolutions and other violent changes of government before the first United States occupation. Haiti's situation is cultural and never in its history has it been a stable country.
Makes me cry 😢
2:45 is WILD.
This is like Fallout
Little bit 🙏🇭🇹
Help in one the way
This guys are out on a shooting spree how do you determine who is fair game
You don’t
What civilian in their right mind would stay in an active combat zone exactly ? Unless the gangs are forcing them.
@@John-Alighieri fair enough but generally speaking you don’t just indiscriminately spray buildings with an lmg at that range
Haiti shall know peace. Ameen
Haitian police admit to indiscriminate firing. Where are all the international human rights organizations?
Human rights are useless
You got to understand this is a very difficult situation, it’s not black and white. These are police and not military. And It’s not like the gangs are wearing redcoats and the police now who is who. How do you defend an area where you don’t know who is friend or foe? I think the police are trying their best given the terrible circumstances. I don’t envy these police. You are out numbered and trying to fight a group who seem invisible.
This people very young
They have self rule
The UN, the US, many european countries ect have intervened many times in haiti. It doesnt work. Haiti seems to be cursed. No industry has been able to grow from haiti so there is little to no incentive for intervention from outside. Its sad.
Elite unit…
Huh?
4:52 😢 my brothers I hope you get the freedom, happiness and peace. Love from a Dominican brother.
dam bro detroit be looking different these days ong 🙏 🤫🧏♂️ sending thoughts
Sad state of affairs!
Hell in paradise. This is so sad and tragic.
“Over the next century, Haiti paid French slaveholders and their descendants the equivalent of between $20 and $30 billion in today's dollars”
Haiti paid all that money to France to be free
Not to be free 🆓, but to be recognized as a “ Free “ state because the French and other Europeans ( UK,Spain ) kept invading every year even after they fought for their independence and won,…
Yeah and they also inavded and tried to take over the DR too
They didn't do anything positive with that freedom.
@@VNeto94maybe they could have done something with the billions of dollars?
@bedeckt they'd have wasted it like they wasted all the help they got in the last decades.
Chicago looks crazy nowadays.
Shut up
yep
At 4:52 just as the shooting starts you can see something emerging from the right to left in the distance, its between the journalists/bread seller and the armoured car stationed at the end of the road. Thats why probably its stray bullets coming from the armoured car.
crazy !!!strange somehow ; that all those terror started around 20yrs. ago...!?!!
That terror started when the U.S. removed a legitimate elected President from office and replaced him with a puppet..

Barbeque, "hold my sweaty towel" as he hands it to one of his soldiers who replies, "you got it Mo Fo"
If u know by who influence that cause this became so low. Not surprising but still sad.
Look at my Country 😢😢 4:16
😮
They think that the world will come and help them as soon as the country collaps.. this is why education is really important..
Elite unit with no proper equipment while the gangs have military style hardware!
They have equipments, it’s the streets that are difficult to reached
Wait until Kenyan police arrive then you will know real brutality.
Trust me they will run like chickens. Last week the U.S. mobility command was deployed in the airport with just cargo planes and helicopters and the city was in silent. Gang members nowhere to be found.😂
That’s how though they are.
@@hashiman8868 we are not sending the blue boys you know.SF are on their way
@@copeyano718 More so, they consistently keep the multinational police out. Like I figured, the gangs' militia, 2:20 at least their leader Barbecue, want the Haitian government to recognize and accept them into the police/defense forces. They want the government to legitimize them and absorb their members into the national police.
It's been almost four centuries...
Why no one protest for them?
No Jews, no news
Why fighting?,? Why raa??
@4:50 they were shooting at your crew and that guy with the bread to shut him up. But I guess they did tell you that they just shoot, I guess they don't want the people talking to you and exposing their violence against unarmed civilians
Everyone who enables these ungrateful criminals is guilty. Including Haitians. People of Haiti have to develop civil society, if they're not ok with the way it is now. It is really sad tio see, that it has to come to this.
Not much different from Chicago IL
Comment est ce que l’on en est arrivé là ? Quel est le fonctionnement « économique » de ces gangs?
Africa must assist Haiti
imagine if the apc stops
Really now its news. Send soldiers or stay out as usual.
2:44 burned bodies in yt?
dude mentioned causing a genocide. where are the protests for this? why is not one out caring for this?
This Nation Shall Rise Again. But They Need Military Assistance.,. Not Kenya police at all.
They're too scared of looking aggressive and occupying.
The police would have worked before but maybe things have gotten too far. Hope not
They need to restart and declare independence from themselves 😂
Sargent Kiprono is on the way.
“We just fire.”
I mean theres no civilian that are crazy enough to stay in an active warzone well maybe stand near the active warzone but still no ones dumb enough to stay there

where did they get the weapons?
probably smugglers and arms dealers, theres big money for it in places like this
Smugglers through the ports or DR border
Activists in the diaspora call the gangs “paramilitary”. The gangs all fight each other as well as terrorizing innocent civilians. It’s a chaotic scramble for power. The elites destabilize, fund the gangs, blame foreign governments and have each other assassinated in an attempt to take power. The poorest of the poor just want peace and stability. The activists claim any foreign forces will be “occupiers”. The victims are the public, who simply want to live a good life. The poorest welcome foreign forces, to at least bring some stability. The gangs are made of bad people, no doubt, but even they are pawns in a bigger game. They’re powerless. This is an over simplification, but accurate. There is no justice in Haiti.
How is food getting to them? How is ammo getting to them? Stop those two things and it's just a matter of time.
Nice
The gangs are actually former Haitian military government.
Nope, bruh what do you know😂, they are mostly orphan that are raised and grew up in the streets that have no home so they give them weapons
Good thing that cop had a big blue ring on so that on one can recognize him. . .
Shame on the past government's, Haiti it's received the most help ever needed it . Where is the money to support their people. Is sad to see this man trying to earn a living and not able to. 😢
the moral hazard of helping a country like Haiti is clear. A congressman's daughter-in law was killed last week, and she was with a religious charity in Haiti... all of these charities and NGOs are providing basic needs that the government fails to provide, but then there is a vacuum because the government feels as if it does not need to provide those services. In the end, it is hard to justify donating money to what seems like a lost cause
@@jbrudertTheir Gov't doesn't have the ability to provide. Lucrative businesses and fertile lands are controlled by gangs who collect taxes from civilians starving their gov'ts ability to govern. Haiti was brought down by it's previous past Political establishment which gave arms to civilian gangs to keep the military in check of being overthrown in a coup. This is typical of African leaders. Always wanting to stay in Power till death do them part. Now those gangs having tasted Power eliminated the president which led to civil war and they want a share. It's a similar situation in African Countries like Sudan, Gabon, DRC Congo etc
I heard that Brazil did quite a good job on Haiti and when UN ordered them to leave all the problems came back...isn't a good idea call them back, i mean i have a friend that lives in Brazil and he says that militaries and polices have a very tought way to handle these kind of stuff
Why France is not sending help?
I think they had enough help from many countries and the UN over the past decades. They need to restart as a civilization.
I was there and heard one day police forces refused the joint training as they are qualify enough. As you can see police forces beg for international aid, so sad nothing has changed since then😢😢😢
Haiti looks NICE! Anyone know any good restaurants worth visiting if I decide to vacation there this summer??
Do you realize that’s not the entire country right?
This Planet could be a paradise 💔
Without dark ppl yes
civilians are most affected
this will soon happen in SA
they really do need outside help for this one
god damn it’s like hell on earth

Someone needs to introduce BBQ to Artie 155....😅
Why police only where is the army
Gang members with more sophisticated guns than Police 🤦🤦
Probably smuggled guns
They are scaving in Haiti.
Maybe France should’ve forgiven that slavery debt after a century or so.

Elite unit that can’t leave the protection of their vehicle
You think well trained soldiers are trained to eat bullets like 50 cent? No they are trained on how to hit and not get hit.
I understand what you're saying, but it's a failed state. If they get into a desperate situation, what type of support -- if any -- do they have? They don't even have the means to replace the bullet-ridden glass!!
It's only an
"Elite" vehicle?
