I love that you are getting your wife into the sport. Some of my favorite memories are my wife and kids going out to her parents property to shot. Quality family time keeps the family together and we need this today. I’m 65 and I still try to get every one together to do some kind of family sport be it shooting fishing camping just anything. Love what you are doing!
One of things i love about long range shooting is it doesn't matter if you are Male, female, young ,old or disabled everyone is on a level playing field. We have benchrests at Waikerie Rifle Club here in South Australia so anyone can come and try.
My wife started out 10 years ago fairly ambivalent about guns and shooting. Wasn't against it just wasn't up for going to the range. Fast forward 10 years, and she is now competing with me in 2gun, IDPA, PRS, and even defensive pistol/rifle classes. It all began with her curiosity after watch vids of me shooting in competition and saying "I can do that!!". My response was "Yes you can". Then I had someone else teach her initially so she was learning without my bias or intrusion. Game changing for us, and we have a blast. We compete monthly, and shoot weekly. It's fun to watch her grow and enjoy shooting sports! Hope Emily gets the bug too!

Pretty good informative and instructional video when you can get a relatively non shooter, in this case your wife Emily, to achieve the group size shown, with virtually her first ever group attempt and to then go on to a very near miss at 1000 yards is a tribute to the inherent accuracy of that particular rifle, ammo combination, allied to her obvious natural ability. Before you adjust parallax you need to adjust the focus for your eye. So many shooters I help learn to shoot long range do not know that step or forget it. If your focus on the magnification lense where you are looking into is not adjusted correctly for your eye sight specially your parallax will not truly be correct. Also after focus is adjusted, before tuning your parallax knob you should turn the parallax knob to max and bring it from max right to where your reticle stops for you careful not to go past that point or you need to max out again and bring it back. This is done to take the lash out of parallax of cheaper scopes like Arken

I bet if you did that same challenge with a man who's never (or very rarely) shot before, you might eventually end up with similar results, but it would be more difficult to get there. Great video!

I use Talley rings on my 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro. The rear ring has a built in bubble level and, because I'm "fashion forward" I got the rings in a matching bronze Cerakote. I can get cold barrel 3 shot groups that average 3/4 MOA all the time. After the barrel warms up it's often 1 1/4 MOA groups.
Regarding shooting positions, what I've noticed is LOP importance. In the proper prone position, lined up as you both were, the LOP/eye relief is substantially longer vs when you would be shooting off hand. Eye relief changes dramatically. If you hold your hunting, while standing, as though you were stalking and just jumped a deer at 50 yards, your body is NOT square with the direction you aim. Your rifle is nearly parallel to your shoulder to shoulder position as though you are just about aiming to your right or left. Change that back to the prone position and now you've just increased LOP and thus, extended your eye relief. Every time I get a rifle built and request a 12.5" LOP I'm told, "that's short." Well it is. But that is the only way I can see out of the scope at full magnification when I'm lined up straight behind the rifle. I've never found or tested any ring mounts that can shorten eye relief while maintaining a stock with a standard LOP of 13 to 13.5 inches. And most all of my shots are while prone
@@backfire Well I was just making a comment since you had indicated proper prone position. Was she able to visualize the entire scope window at full magnification while prone? My man you found an angel on earth! And yes long range is actually pretty easy. Ive hit 1000 yards the first time i brought my savage axis out to the range. American eagle 140 grain open tip match. Only had to use holds for it too, wasnt hardly any wind that day.
Great video, especially for someone just getting started in long-range shooting; as well as getting the wife into it as well. Thank you, Sir, really enjoyed the information.
Great description of the mechanics, this is a great video for people new to firearms as well as seasoned shooters. Awesome range-scape. I like to see the diversity of ranges people use. 👍
Jim, thank you for a great instructional video, as always, for inexperienced and experienced shooters alike. Congratulations, Emily, on some fine shooting! I find it refreshing that Lear Capitol is embracing shooting sports; in today's unpredictable political climate that is a bold stance.
tapered scope mounts helps with long range. It is really easy to shoot long range if you can find one of those underground ranges! That is a place where the wind is removed from the equation. But if you want wind, try Camp Perry!
Small tip, measure the group from the side to the side of the holes. This way you get the exact heart measurement. So the left side of the hole and the left side of the other hole.
Great video and now I'm interested in a top-mounted bipod. I have a CKYE pod, but I also try to shoot off my pack without a bipod as much as possible since I will always have a pack, but my not always have or want to carry a bipod. Before there were all these apps I wrote a 6-DOF (degrees of freedom) script in Matlab as part of an Ammunition Engineering course I was teaching. I've compared it with the Hornady app and 4-DOF is plenty accurate. They aren't necessarily inputting any extra data, just using more variables so it's computationally more expensive (more time and computing power required), which isn't really an issue on todays phones, but was a big deal on older computers, including supercomputers. Most sets of equations will be truncated for higher order terms and become approximations of the actual set of coupled equations, but even that is not necessary with modern computers. It may take a few minutes but a standard desktop computer can create a range table based on full-blown numerical modelling in a few minutes.
Jim, what is the best way to measure the "height above bore" that ballistic apps require? How about a short video showing how to measure, please? Thanks.
Meanwhile, _Mark & Sam After Work_ steps up with a .30-30 Uberti, a duct taped on ladder rear sight, and walks a free-hand shot into 1000 yards in like 4 shots. hahahaha
Thank you for the video. I don't currently have a range where I can shoot 1000 yds, but I am hoping someday. I knew many of the things you discussed, but it really helped to remind me of some things I need to, such as building profiles in my Kestrel app. I am fortunate to have a MagentoSpeed Chronograph. You mentioned in your video that the velocities listed on the box are usually faster than "actual" velocity from an individual gun. Personally, I have found if my gun has a barrel equal to or longer than the barrel used by the manufacturer then my velocities have all been faster. Usually not more than just a few feet, but still faster. If the barrel is shorter my velocities have been slower. In some cases as much as 200 fps slower with a barrel just 2 inches shorter. Again, thank you for the video. Excellent information.
What I hate is when they use a 24" test barrel to generate published velocities on a cartridge that will likely be fired in a 16-20" barrel like a 30/30 win or a 5.56
@@InWithBothFeet I completely agree with you. Personally, if they are going to go with a single generic barrel length I think it should be 20 inches. Most hunting rifles are not 24”, let alone the AR style or lever guns.
It’s nice to see some one being honest about the ranges that are shooting at , I’ve seen guys claiming to shoot out to a mile with a 6.5 cm with a super sniper, lol. Good job

I’ve told multiple people that 1000 yard shot is wayyy easier than you would think. It’s intimidating at first, but once that first shot hits the target you just want to go further 😂
Yeah it's not that much of a challenge in todays world. Unless you listen to a bunch of the people on this channel that think 400 is almost impossible and never shot past
Depends on how he gets down. A lot of folks would say the same about my girl, but she isn't going anywhere. We been through that, she decided men in general aren't capable. I'd say it's a humble brag, but it's not. She came back two years later and told me I ruined sex for her, and we got back together. Maybe he's got the skills to pay the bills. Who knows?
Granted, that is a heavy oversize barrel, but the general rule is to let the barrel cool after 3 shots on most larger caliber rifles. Smaller calibers like the AR, free float stocks, and so on can handle a LOT more. The free float stock is especially important in this case. You don't want the stock grip to affect the barrel. A free float totally eliminates that problem.
One thing I've run across over and over is to NOT have any support on the rifle barrel itself. You say the flexible forearm causes problems itself, so you need to address both problems. It Will throw off your grouping. You can group, but not as tight and you will get (close) flyers. See your groups and the flyer. Support it on the stock forearm. See other UA-cam Vids on the subject.
Love your channel. Thanks for the Hornaday ballistics app. I downloaded it to my phone. I ordered and am waiting on a Bergara Wilderness HMR in 6.5 creedmore with a 24" barrel. Love the video, info and the views from Warner Valley. It's a great time to be enjoying the outdoors here. Curious what chronograph that is. I've been using a Labradar for a couple of years and finally have gotten more successful at some of the nuances with it, plus a red dot and good mount on top goes a long way. The information is great! I've been mostly occupied with AR platforms the last while but looking to start getting some updated bolt guns soon. I love that Bergara.
Wow, you're the 5th person to recognize this as Warner Valley on this video! I shoot videos there all the time and nobody mentions it. Must have a lot of locals watching this one. The chrono is the FX outdoors. It's very reliable but the build quality feels cheap, and it's more expensive than the labradar. Garmin released one today that looks pretty cool.
@@backfire Thanks for the info! I will be looking at both of those a bit. I quite enjoy your videos so keep them coming. I'm looking for a good place for 1k yd shooting. I know a few people that go either west over Utah Hill or South out on River road due to the popularity of Warner Valley. I used to go out there and shoot my dev loads but there are private areas that are tricky to navigate. I've been yelled at for being in areas out there when I didn't know I was on private land (it is unmarked and unfenced for the most part). So I spend a lot more time at our range for 100 or 200 yd shooting, which is very nice actually.
DOA shooting benches are awesome! Why not get one for shooting. The guy that sells them is a mile away from your house. Love mine I got the big one so a 50 bmg fits on it.
or if your shooting 6.5CM and shooting mills with a 2.5 inch offset just take the first number off the distance your shooting and subtract 2 so at @1000. 10-2=8Mil @700. 7-2=5Mil ect..
With regards to the Hornady app, you provide great info. I made the opposite mistake, I was trying to use 4dof for some low grain .224 bullets that they didn't have 4dof calcs for. Eventually when I tried the bc calculator, I found the bullets I was looking for.
Having nerve issues with my neck and back the slow squeeze of the trigger doesn't always work for me. Nerve twitches cause related movement in the reticle, one of the ways I have compensated for this is a much quicker yet smooth trigger pull. This way the rifle goes off at the moment I want it to instead of a surprise, almost eliminating nerve damage related reticle movement.
Wow I started watching your UA-cam and your voice sounded so familiar. I used to listen to your photography pod cast. You’re shooting rifles instead of cameras. I like you video. Just like your podcast you’re interesting and informative.
I've tried the same app and it consistently gives me a much higher adjustment than needed, example is almost 3 MOA high for 600y. Close enough to to walk in on a range day I suppose but gatta have that notebook for recording accurate DOPE once a hit is made.
This is my first time viewing one of your videos. I'm curious have you shot the "milk jug challenge" ? If i lived in Utah I would for sure be doing that.

I need to upgrade to nicer bags. I've been using a sock filled with beans for the last few years, not sure if it matters on the type of bean but I think they are pinto. Served me well.
Im getting more into distance shooting now. I really like trying to push a 5.56 as far as i can to see if i can hit a target up to 600 yards away. Short version of that story is...no.. havent done it yet. Im still learning though so ill get it sometime. I know of the new 6mm and 6.5mm rounds that are distance calibers but im not rich enough just yet to buy a rifle in one of them. Eventually ill join the club.

I love your sponsors, good solid sponsers. - greetings from South Africa
You two are a cute couple, -but yes a informative/well made video. Thanks
Great video, especially for someone just getting started in long-range shooting; as well as getting the wife into it as well. Thank you, Sir, really enjoyed the information.
well your videos have officially gotten 5x better just with the new addition to scenery.
You are both awesome. Keep her on the show!!
tapered scope mounts helps with long range.
You have to do the dishes because she missed? Hmm could she have purposely missed ??? 😂
It's a dark conspiracy. I never should have trusted that lady.
No woman would ever fake it 🤣
Bro. So awesome that you did this with your wife. My wife was like "hmmmm, maybe I CAN do that.". Thanks!
Jim, what is the best way to measure the "height above bore" that ballistic apps require? How about a short video showing how to measure, please? Thanks.
I like using an ocular lens aperture to remove the parallax and cheek weld concerns.
Meanwhile, _Mark & Sam After Work_ steps up with a .30-30 Uberti, a duct taped on ladder rear sight, and walks a free-hand shot into 1000 yards in like 4 shots. hahahaha
That team is amazing.
Good job
How the hell are you two not on commercials on TV? Perfect couple! Hope you guys the best. Great video also
Did anybody else get through the whole video and realize you didn’t learn anything and was a little distracted 😂.
All jokes aside some solid tips!
Nice job man 🤛
Can you provide the names/models of the complete set (5:30) without the mat?
And the breakdown prices on rifle, bipod, scope & a box of ammo?
I’ve told multiple people that 1000 yard shot is wayyy easier than you would think. It’s intimidating at first, but once that first shot hits the target you just want to go further 😂
Yeah it's not that much of a challenge in todays world. Unless you listen to a bunch of the people on this channel that think 400 is almost impossible and never shot past
Before you do anything, check to make sure the action screws are torqued correctly.
Can we all agree he outkicked his coverage with that wife?
Agreed.
@@backfire Glad you have a sense of humor!
@@backfiretook that joke like a champ street cred just upped bud 😂
@@hUnTnlolz24 100%! I respect a man with a sense of humor.
These are some really great instructions. Thanks for making these videos.
Awesome stuff! The chemistry between you and your wife is great!
Dream Job, Lots of great guns, and Dream Wife = Lucky Man. Really fun video.
Love your channel. Thanks for the Hornaday ballistics app. I downloaded it to my phone. I ordered and am waiting on a Bergara Wilderness HMR in 6.5 creedmore with a 24" barrel. Any recommendations on a mil dot scope. I'm interested in attempting anything from 300 yards to a mile. Thanks again for the great videos. BTW your wife did a great job shooting.
1:42 vortex 30mm rings are $24 and cheaper than your mentioned Amazon $30 special. Explain why those are bad.
DOA shooting benches are awesome! Why not get one for shooting. The guy that sells them is a mile away from your house. Love mine I got the big one so a 50 bmg fits on it.
The style of shooting bag is one thing, the filling in it is what really makes or breaks it. What do you use as shooting bag filler?
I’ve noticed with a lot of rifles set up for longer rage shooting that they all have longer barrels. But does barrel length really matter?
Longer barrel means more velocity, less wind shift, less bullet drop. Better for long range.
Loved your video! What version is that Accu-Tac bipod? I've been looking for something like that.
or if your shooting 6.5CM and shooting mills with a 2.5 inch offset just take the first number off the distance your shooting and subtract 2 so at @1000. 10-2=8Mil @700. 7-2=5Mil ect..
Which Arken scope is that one? EP5? I’m loving their scopes. I’ve used Trijicon in the past and these scopes punch far above their price range.
With regards to the Hornady app, you provide great info. I made the opposite mistake, I was trying to use 4dof for some low grain .224 bullets that they didn't have 4dof calcs for. Eventually when I tried the bc calculator, I found the bullets I was looking for.
I just happened across this video, I started watching and was like, “hey that looks like my cousin!” Ha great video, I had no idea you had a channel.
When using a scope such as a 5-25x, when zeroing your gun at 100yrds do you just leave it at Max power?
Nice shooting, you are a great couple! Love that Bergara, wonder why we have not seen much of them in competitions yet.
Speaking about bipod mount I would be interested in a center bore mount
Would you recommend the Sig Cross or the Bergara B-14 HMR for an all around hunting/long range precision rifle (6.5 Creedmoor)?
Family fun, great video, it brightened my day.
I have learned so much from you keep up the good work thank you
Thanks, will do!
I looked at the bergara but decided to go with the MPA PMR Pro 2 mostly due to the ARC CDG action! 🤤 been looking at his actions for a long time
I've tried the same app and it consistently gives me a much higher adjustment than needed, example is almost 3 MOA high for 600y. Close enough to to walk in on a range day I suppose but gatta have that notebook for recording accurate DOPE once a hit is made.
That’s awesome, I am going to use this video to convince my wife to start shooting with me!
This is my first time viewing one of your videos. I'm curious have you shot the "milk jug challenge" ?
If i lived in Utah I would for sure be doing that.
Can you do another 6.8 western video? I’ve been trying to get one for years and finally was able to get my hands on a xbolt! Paired it with the veracityph and it’s the smoothest shooting gun I’ve ever owned!
I'm interested in that Bipod ... what is that? 🤔🤔
Family it's always the best 🎉🎉🎉best regards from Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Sure wish I could take you up on that 1 moa challenge, I have 4 hunting rifles that shoot 1/4-5/16 consistently
I need to upgrade to nicer bags. I've been using a sock filled with beans for the last few years, not sure if it matters on the type of bean but I think they are pinto. Served me well.
Has zircon sand gone obsolete, or is there a reason something else is in sand bags these days? (It is about twice as heavy as plain quartz sand.)
How do you like the premiere competition? I'm thinking about getting one in 6mm creed.
Couldn't find a video of yours where you are talking about Howa 1500
It's not the range of the shot, it's the size of the target.
Her closing statement was awesome.
"There will be no twerking on this video" 😂😂😂
Love your videos man .. keep up the great work !!
What size/shape target are you trying to get impacts on at that distance? What ammo, firearm, optic etc are you using?
What do you really think about the Arken optics?
Can you do a review on them I don’t think any of your optics reviews has had the arken before. Thank you
Could you recommend a good bubble level for a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56?
Dang bro - Living the dream. Congrats!
What state did you film this in?
The surroundings are really cool.
