As a Latvian I can tell you that this win was huge, it's all over the news here. Hockey is very big in Latvia (arguably the most popular sport) even though we are not one of the strongest countries. If you remember last year's world championship when we got the bronze medal, that is one of the greatest achievements in all of our sports. The next day was an official holiday for the whole country. As for the Juniors, I think the country is expecting a bit more after this win but personally I can't see us getting points against USA and Finland. Only chance for us getting into the quarters is beating Germany. Good luck to Canada though, I'd prefer if they won the tournament instead of the USA :)
I'm happy for you guys as a Canadian but why are you guys acting like you won a medal yesterday? You beat team Canada in a round robin. It wasn't even our best players in the under 20s. Anyways. Let's see where the real tournament goes. When a medal is on the line, expect team Canada to come out swinging now.
Thats spot on, sports are better when theres many countries battling for gold. Hope those little countries can produce more talent for coming years. There aint too many great hockey nations.
Hot take on the Canada losing to Latvia (from an American): sometimes you run into a goalie having the game of his life, and that doesn’t mean you were bad. Also, people get way too invested emotionally in a u-20 tournament (just like the people who go on social media to harass college football players after a loss). One reason I like getting invested in sports is because, as a fan, it’s something I can care about with literally zero stakes if the result doesn’t go my team’s way.
Matthews injured works on moon time where one day is 30 earth days. So when they say he's day-to-day that means he comes back in March. Tortorella's right in not commenting on Gauthier. A coach can't comment on a player who plays for another team because that's tampering, ain't it?
Primeau had a good season last year. I don't know what's up with him this year. I wish he finds himself in the AHL and comes back strong. He was a solid backup last year, we need that this year again.
As an American, I think I understand how important it is for Canadians to always have the best or one of the best teams. As a hockey fan, I understand the Canadian desire to share the game they love with others. As a New Englander, I know that the person most responsible for the U.S. now having enough elite players to compete with Canada ironically is Canadian. He grew up in a town in Ontario called Parry Sound. Perhaps you've heard of him?
The US may beat Latvia by a big score. The Latvians did a ton of work last night and will be physically and emotionally spent. Canada may not win gold but the loss to Latvia won't be a reason why. Losing Schaefer will hurt but they can rebound. Anyway, even as a Canadian I am happy for Latvia. It is a win they will remember for many many years.
It's a great win for Latvia and they have great hockey fans, so it's nice to see them have something to celebrate it. Canada goes into hockey tournaments with only one standard: win it all or the government calls a Royal Inquiry about what went wrong. There are other players on the Canucks than Hughes, but when he's not there you really see that without him Vancouver is in the same failure conversation as they're having in Buffalo, Nashville, and with the Rangers.
losing matthew schafer is going to hurt. the kid's been thru some bad luck. his billet mom passed away, then his mother died earlier this year. wishing matthew all the best as he gets ready for the 2025 NHL draft, where he is considered to be a high 1st rd pick. putting that aside, i am really skeptical of hockey canada's ability to learn lessons and pick the best guys for a WJC tournament. i see the USA is coming up as a serious contending program. since 2010 has the same number of WJC titles as canada. which is 5 each. states have been getting better and better, and as a canadian i welcome the challenge. USA wiped out CAN in 2010, 2017 and 2021 in gold medal steel-cage matches, and they deserve credit for doing that.
Matthews a year ago was himself talking about scoring more goals than Gretzky. Ovechkin has never once in public spoken about it. Not once and the often injured Matthews speaks about it when he might not even hit 500 before he is into his 30s making 650-700 his best possible end result if healthy.
Glad for Latvia they deserved it and were the better team last night. Maybe this will teach hockey Canada a lesson about picking a team although I won't hold my breath as the Hockey Canada management seems quite incompetent when it comes to picking these WJC teams
@@havenless3551 it's not just Canada's loss against Latvia. Hockey Canada is lagging behind the seamlessly endless funds of USA hockey. You can arguably say that the D core for the USA is better in the 4 nations cup than Canada's and the USA goaltending is worlds ahead.

He’s going to set a new record simply by hanging out by the opposition blueline when the goal is empty. The team will feed him, he’ll get his ENGs, and eventually a record, and hopefully retire the next day.

They start a 17 year old goalie ahead of of6’2” that is 19 drafted and signed??? You also start underage players ahead of signed nhl drafted players. Lastly players like Cristall are left off the roster and a player with nhl games is on your 4th line. Primeau will either get a PTO next year or be in Europe. He was given every opportunity to become a backup or more. He just can't handle the spotlight of Montreal. Fowler will get a full year in Laval next year. Dobas will stick as the backup.
People really need to stop whining. Its not a medal match. Team USA has lost to other cluntries before that were tiny. Its not a big deal. Team Canada is a monster.
Canada should stop training all junior hockey players don’t let them play in the OHL or the Canadian hockey league then we’ll start winning every world championship again
