Was The Titanic Sunk On Purpose?
Вставка

- In the 1990s a new and explosive theory emerged, championed by an author and enthusiast from England. Robin Gardiner proposed that Titanic never really sank at all; that in April 1912 it was actually the ship's sister, Olympic, that sank as part of a plot to cash in on insurance for the beleaguered owner of the liners, the White Star Line. Flash forward to today and the theory has picked up speed in recent years in online forums and social media; so what is the truth? What actually happened in 1911 and 1912? In this two part series we'll examine the facts as they stand; the photo record and plans to establish what happened to Olympic. We'll speak with renown naval architect and engineer Dr Stephen Payne, designer of many passenger ships, notably the Queen Mary 2. We'll try to set the record straight on Gardiner's theory and reveal the truth behind the great Titanic conspiracy theory; the greatest fraud in modern historiography.
Research for this video was provided by authors and historians Bruce Beveridge and Mark Chirnside. With special thanks to Stephen Payne.

Hi friends! This video was originally published in two parts earlier this year. Recently, with the rise of AI on UA-cam and Facebook there has been an explosion of misinformation around the supposed Titanic-Olympic switch. I’m posting this longer video as a tool in case you or somebody you know might like to know the facts of the matter as they really stand! If you have any questions or doubt any of the points I raised in this video please leave a comment here and I’ll do my best to answer!

I am glad you like Mike Brady (or Captain Mike as I like to call him) and the Oceanliner Designs Channel, I've been watching this Channel for about 2.4 years as just an 'Armchair Enthusiast' knowing very little about Ships other than having a passion for all things Titanic since I was a kid of 10 in 1985 when the wreck was found. I can honestly say that I have learnt soooo much about Titanic separating fact from fiction and just Ships and disasters in general from watching Captain Mike once a week. I heartly reccommend staying with this Channel as OD and Captain Mike are the very BEST on YT at bringing you amazing and informative videos about all things Ship-related, I don't know anyone who's profession outside of being in the Navey knows more about Ships and indeed Titainic herself (as that is Mikes specialist subject) than Mike. The facts are always presented in a very serious and dedicated way, well put and addressed, rumours and falsehoods addressed with facts and look out for OD videos that are 1 hour plus as they tend to be rather special, fantastic reconnstruction graphics and Mike narrating the facts in a storytime type of way, 'Are you sitting comfortably, then I'll begin' way that sucks you right into it from the word go and he's very sensitive to the human loss and tradgedy that some of these incidents were. I reccommend starting with the Empress of Ireland first and seeing if you like it - which I guarantee you will and go from there, if you don't like it I shall eat my words but hopefully it will be welcome aboard to a new fan of OD! ☺❤🚢⚓
Thank you for your kind comments. I have now “binged” on at least 10 of the past videos and have enjoyed each and every one. As a former submariner, I particularly enjoyed the video on the disastrous WWI K class boats. I believe that in order to dive, some 200+ valves had to be operated leading to the apocryphal statement by one K Boat CO “ I say No 1, my end’s diving, what’s your end doing!!”. Keep up the great informative and thought provoking work.
THANK YOU for posting this. The misinformation about Titanic is so common that it’s impossible to bring up the accident in a group setting without someone saying “it was actually Olympic that sank”. It’s sad how facts are starting to be considered optional
It wouldn't have been impossible to switch the ships. Insurance fraud has been around since the birth of insurance, but this year is the first I am ever hearing about this. I am willing to hear the theory. I love a good theory.
You should never believe the top story given to you by the media or a government. They only tell you what they want you to know.
When titanic disappears, some generations after, people will go "Titanic never existed".

@@BrinJay-s4v Put simply, the 401 number is the blade at the wrecksite because the wreck is that of Titanic.
James Cameron kind of disproved the switch theory years ago. He said in an interview that there were precious few photos of the inside of Titanic so when he made his movie most of his set pieces were based on the amply available photos of Olympic. While the two ships were nearly identical on the exterior, there were a number of differences on the interior. Several photos of the interior of Olympic simply don't match up with the wreck.
Even the exteriors are different enough, and they are quite different, to discount the “theory”.
There was also the number on the propellors.

Mike, I really love how you cover this video. You start off recognizing that there are people who have heard of and may believe this theory. Then you carefully piece together clear evidence that Gardner was the fraud. I love how you end pointing out the injustice of Gardner's attack on legitimate people who where victims of his false attack. Well done.
Well said.
Captain Smith would have had to be brought in on it too. Imagine how THAT conversation would have went.
Evil White Star Executive:
"Captain Smith, the damage to Olympic has brought White Star the the brink of bankruptcy. But we have a solution: We'll swap the names of Olympic and Titanic and you'll sail the renamed Olympic to a predetermined where we've arranged an iceberg which will sink Olympic and we'll collect the insurance money. Unfortunately, that means that you and the bulk of your passengers and crew will die, but the company will be saved."
Captain Smith:
"Groovy"
Maybe I'm getting cynical with age, but I really don't think so.
Captain Smith actually asked about additional lifeboats prior to the sailing and was told they were unnecessary.
"And remember, you'll need to plan the iceberg impact to damage the ship enough to sink it, BUT make a sharp turn just before impact so that any surviving witnesses will be convinced that we TRIED to avoid it."
@@Trebor74Because they weren’t believed to be necessary. Titanic already had 4 extra boats than required by law, and lifeboats (more commonly referred to as boats) were meant to ferry passengers from a stricken vessel to a safer one. This is why so much attention was put on Titanic’s watertight compartments: so that the ship would remain afloat long enough for another ship to arrive on the scene in order for an evacuation to the ship by the sinking ship’s occupants.
The name Luigi Mangioni comes to mind here as well (as does the outcome of the sinking of the Lusitania)....as far as the firestorm and resources that would've come if it had come out this was premeditated and on purpose. 1500 people didn't survive that night (and they were lucky it wasn't more). But considering WHO was on that ship and who didn't make it out.... The Risk/reward ratio on a conspiracy like this would've been really poor. If they had intentionally put 2,000 people on that ship (that they knew didn't have enough lifeboats and they knew was going to be in cold water)... Common sense tells you nobody involved in a conspiracy like that would come out well if caught. Good chance a lot of them would've died in prison...possibly not from natural causes.
If they had done what this guy asserts and it had come out, anyone involved would've been hunted down like a dog and they would've been not fared well afterwards given the level of public rage and the amount of money and power that would've been leveraged against them.
We must all remember the saying," Never argue with a fool, people won't be able to tell the difference." Therefore, let people who embrace conspiracy theories be less informed than the rest of us. No one HAS to be logical, though it would be preferable.
If Olympic was such a nightmare of damage how did they get her mechanically in shape enough to go 20kts on 1 prop and 1 engine to fake Titanic maiden voyage?
Short answer: no
Long answer: hell nooooooooooooooooooooo
Was its chance of survival pretty much flunked in the trash by greed, incompetence, and a 100 year cover up? Yes

Thanks for another great video, someone asked me about the switch theory just a couple of weeks ago and my biggest argument against it has always been that after the sinking newspapers would pay out big money for any stories about the Titanic but not one of the thousands of H&W workers said "oh I've got a tell you something Gents"
Yep those lawsuits are a bitch and waste of a ship 😂
The dockyard workers, their families or anyone visiting Belfast, professionally or privately, sailing to or from Belfast harbour as a foreigner, any journalist domestic or foreigner: cannot even imagine some Irish nationalist, anarchist or communist resisting the government *not* leaking this abroad in order to embarass the UK....
What scares me is people believing something this obviously absurd
Or any of the Titanic's crew who were being sharply questioned on the witness stand in any of the inquiries which followed. You wouldn't expect the primary beneficiaries of the scheme to crack, but surely some of the rank-and-file being accused of lack of due diligence would have caved and thrown their superiors under the bus.
To be fair, over 130k people were employed during the Manhattan Project and they were none the wiser it was going to be a nuclear test site. Not saying anything sinister happened with Titanic, just pointing out that big secrets can be kept from powerful people without our knowledge.
@@Scott-M1 you would be surprised how many knew, but a) they were sworn to secrecy in advance (and wartime) , most had no ideas they were working on anything "super secret" -. suspect the miners and logistics people had no clue they were even part of a secret project, most people at the factories didn't know either and neither did any of them know 1000+ people died because of them keeping mum. Nevermind it being warzime and "loose liüps sink ships" (no pun intended )
... plus, lots of them spoke about it afterwards, many core people even writing memoirs about the experience. So yeah comparing oranges and apples.. ?
From the first time I heard the theory, I dismissed it. No group of ordinary workers, and all their families and friends, stays that quiet for their entire lives. Especially when it would make an amazing story in the pub and they are a bit drunk.
Also, there are plenty of people who might go along with it if the plan was for no one to die, but once the news got out about just how bad the disaster was, suddenly a lot of the people involved would've been willing to speak out. The same thing happened with the M16 scandal in the US military. Intentional sabotage by corrupt government officials to torpedo the M16 in order to prop up the Springfield Armory design, which all fell apart once the M16 got into combat at that sabotage started to get a body count
Which theory the switch theory which is gobbledygook or the sunk on purpose theory? Cos if you think people don't stay quiet ponder this: a certain BBC entertainer who did some things did it for decades and here's a short list of who knew:

Aka you’d need a person, traumatized as a child, to speak up and let the world know this man touched me as a kid. And you’re taking this and comparing it to a scenario where thousands were firsthand witnesses to an insurance scam bound to send thousands to their grave? It’s quite literally thousands of times more likely a worker at Belfast would’ve leaked this than a traumatized child, not bringing up that it’s factually thousands of times more likely, given there were anywhere from 3000-5000 workers at Belfast at any given time, just say you dont know what you’re talking about next time. When I first heard this theory it seemed ridiculous to me that Thomas Andrews would have been oblivious to the switch
And if he was in on it, why did he chose to stay on board and die?
@@mckenzie.latham91I don’t subscribe to the theory but perhaps he didn’t expect the guilt to affect him so much.
On Tues 31 Oct in 1995 I attended an event where Robert Ballard gave a talk in support of his then new book "Exploring the Lusitania" in the Sheraton on the Park hotel in Sydney (referring to my ticket card from the event). In the general questions section at the end someone mentioned the Gardiner book & his theory, and invited Dr Ballard's comment. He replied (based on my memory) something like "the ship I found was definitely the Titanic". IMHO discussion closed. I still have my signed book from the event and the lunch was good, too.
To sum up other comments and the video to show this was a totally plausible theory that definitely happened, the cost comparison:
-Problem: ship collides with other ship, is damaged. Potential actions:
A. Repair ship, put back into service. Costs:
-Direct cost of repair OR insurance pays for it, and insurance rates might go up (I don't know anything about ship insurance these would have had)
-Loss of income for the time the ship is being repaired.
b. Deliberately sink ship, switch with other ship, use insurance payout to build new ship (If the ship was worth spending the money to build, it is safe to say that White Star prefers another ship to keeping the money) Costs:
-Cost of building a new ship. Paid for by insurance, mostly, but some must be paid for by the company and possibly insurance rates go up (see above about insurance knowledge)
-Loss of income for the time it takes to build a completely new ship
-Cost of refitting ships to carry out switch. Make sure to chase down all possible documents about the ships, perhaps muddle the waters in case some details slip through, create confusions about which ship is which.
-Cost of keeping everyone quiet about said refits.
-Loss of reputation from being involved in an accident.
--More severe if sinking is carried out in a way that gets more people killed. Presumably white star wants the ship to sink under conditions where everyone can be rescued.
-Payouts from lost property aboard ship.
-If sinking goes poorly, the loss of crew, some of which represent a lot of training and experience. Crew will also make sure of their own volition to carry out sinking under conditions where they will be rescued, and will use their knowledge of the plan to make sure they survive.
Obviously, option B is the preferred choice.
My first and biggest objection to the whole idea is... wouldn't it have occurred to anyone that staging a disaster in the ocean on purpose would do serious damage to White Star's overall reputation? Even if they could pull off some scheme for a big one-time insurance payout, White Star would immediately gain a reputation for danger that would haunt them for a long time. Who would want to risk a trans Atlantic crossing on the line whose latest and greatest ship sank on her maiden voyage? This does get covered in the video, but I feel it was very brief considering how big of a deal I think it would be.
Especially while loading it with only half the number of lifeboat it needed, insuring to make it the largest disaster of its time
Especially when you go around saying your ship is unsinkable. You are going to make yourself look like a fool
Plus White Star already had a reputation from the Atlantic, why repeat that. J. Bruce Ismay was trying to advance White Star from his father's era
Not to mention of the cover up failed, and the public found out. The White Star Line would have to be the stupidest of the stupid to try and risk their reputation to that degree. If the public found out, White Star Line would be remembered as a criminal organization willing to sacrifice thousands for the sake of insurance fraud. The logic behind the switch theory is pretty much just "Corporation = comically evil and dumb".
And that is exactly what happened, the titanic was a huge failure for white star line, their reputation plummeted and they lost investors and suffered stock drop
the failure and loss of their other ships over the next few years only furthered to tank them entirely as a company
Another problem with the Official Secrets Act story, the Official Secrets Act was a war measure initially passed in 1917, 5 years after the sinking of the Titanic.
Well clearly the White Star Line had to first fracture the space-time continuum.
Good call!
Official Secrets Act of 1889 and 1911.
@@throttlegalsmagazineaustra7361 Except it's not true...
@TheMattTrakker yes but the provisions such as publication bans and people being required to sign declarations that information is subject to the Act came in with the 1917 Act. Those are the provisions referred to in this conspiracy theory.
The simplest of sniff tests: you're trying to save money by sinking your own ship and collecting on insurance; do you invest into an extraordinarily elaborate and (presumably) expensive coverup, or do you simply... sink the ship that's damaged and collect insurance?
Or just collect the insurance on the ship that has been rendered unseaworthy. It's not like insurance only pays if the ship goes under.
Or set it on fire during a "refit" when everything valuable was stripped off
As mentioned - simply set a fire while it is being repaired ? Of course, it needs to be properly insured first
not too mention should you also sacrifice one of your companies chief ship builders as thomas andrews died on the titanic
@@mckenzie.latham91 Well, the conspiracy theory says the collision and loss of life really were an accident.
Another huge problem with this theory is that it doesn't make any business sense.
The insurance payout was 1 million, but after the sinking white star was sued for over 16,8 million, which the claiments then reduced to 2.5 million. White Star was able to settle for only 664k and still had to pay their own lawyers.
They also spent six months refitting the "olympic" to make her safer after the crew went on strike and the 1500 dead people hurt their ticket sales a lot for a while, too.
Not to mention whole thing could easily blow up, tank both companies involved (white star and the shipyard) and sent people to jail if a whistleblower or disgruntled employee (or even a belfast citizen) ever talked about it to the press or police. And there would have been a lot of people involved in this.
I agree these are valid points. The whole theory just doesnt make sense for “saving the company” and any insurance payouts. Its just too much and too ridiculous.
Just a minor point about HMS Hawke. She was a ship of the 'Edgar' class, of nine First Class Protected Cruisers' built between 1889 & 1894. The class did not have actual ram bows, but ram-style, or inverted, bows, which simply meant that the most forward point of the bow was at the waterline, rather than at the top.
This was intended to maximise the length of the ship, in order to increase speed, provide better hydrodynamic drag, and make the ship more fuel efficient. It was not intended to enable the Edgars to ram other ships to sink them. The Edgars carried 2 x 9.2 inch guns and 10 x 6 inch guns for the purpose of doing that.
The bow was not heavily reinforced in the manner of earlier ships, such as the 1881 built HMS Polyphemus, designed from the outset as a 'torpedo ram' or indeed the Danish Tordenskjold, commissioned in 1882. There is an excellent photograph available of Polyphemus in dry dock, which shows what a real ram bow, intended for that purpose, looks like.
The proof of this may be seen in the photographs of HMS Hawke after the collision, showing her badly crumpled bow. Something which would not have happened had she actually been fitted with a bow designed for ramming.
Just one of a myriad of errors to be found in Robin's imaginative, but largely fact free, book. I fear.

There is another part that makes the switch theory highly unlikely:
If the switch had happened, the damaged Olympic would have had to be repaired to quite a degree. Any damage to the machinery/propeller shafts would have to been fixed to reach her top speed in the trials that happened. All the structural damage would have needed to be fixed at least so far as to comply to all the regulations to get the permission to put her in service as the Titanic. All the superficial damage would have been needed to be fixed to hide the accident.
So in what part would that have been significantly cheaper then to repair her in earnest?
The Switch theory is self damaging in this point: the bigger the damage from the Hawk incident was, the harder it would have been to repair it enough to be able to fake her as a new Titanic.
Not to mention all the interior additions to Titanic, like expanded b-deck staterooms and parlor suites, the extended A La Carte Restaurant, and the new Cafe Parisian, all of which not added to Olympic until her 1913 refit or later.

_Paris_ and _Suevic_ sink the conspiracy theory on their own.
On top of that, there's the cost to reputation of sinking a ship, even if nobody dies in the sinking, because now your vessels are seen as unsafe. And over 1,500 people died due to insufficient lifeboats and exposure to the cold. If they were going to plan to sink a ship, they'd at least have enough boats, and have vessels nearby ready for rescue. But _everyone_ was surprised by the collision and sinking.
And they underinsured because they didn't intend on sinking their ships. So many points against the switch conspiracy.
The fact that Titanic’s sinking tarnished white star line and nearly caused them to go destitute especially after it got out how they treated the workers and families of the dead passengers and crew

Anytime a conspiracy theorist’s credentials are “I’m an amateur (XYZ),” I ignore anything they have to say. He might as well have added “and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night” to his credentials at that point.

I mean just look at the premise the guy driving the boat ran it into an iceberg in the middle of the ocean in a time where they barely had flight , at a time when it's freezing , for someone else's ambition makes sense to me whats your problem lol
There's two things I want to thank you for, Mr. Brady. First is your intro. It was one of the things that helped a year ago back when I was battling depression. I don't care how much hate or ridicule I get for that, but yeah, it helped a bit. Second, is at the end of this video, mentioning the damage to the legacy of all involved. My own personal belief puts a lot of value on legacy. What will someone be remembered for. Wild theories like the switch theory, do damage to the legacy of just about everyone involved. So thanks for remembering them.
That’s why it’s so strange to me why this boy who loved Titanic would grow up to write a book of lies about her. I hope you feel well again soon!
@@JSMITHSTONES Oh I've been doing much better for a while now. Thanks. While trains are my primary interest, any big old piece of machinery will catch my interest, and the engineering that goes into the big ships of a bygone era are fascinating.
I remember watching Titanic Secrets Revealed when i was 5 ish and i watched it pretty much all day every day for years, same with James Cameron's Titanic and A Night To Remember.
But watching secrets revealed and the interviews they did with everyone and that Robin Gardner guy, i used to get so mad when i'd hear him speak.
Never believed a single thing he said even back then.
Thanks for doing this video Mike.

Thank you for posting this! Me and one of my family members have had multiple arguments over the past year about this, finally something to give him!

What do you mean
Anyone who has ever been a project manager knows how unrealistic this theory is in practice.
The terms "project manager" and "practice" don't match... ;-)
Even in theory it would not work.
Quite so

Your timing is impeccable. About a week ago, I saw a very persuasive switch video. I immediately thereafter found your two part...I'll call it a "rebuttal." Even though I just saw this in its two part form, it was quite enjoyable and I'm now watching the hour long version. Excellent work.
The real Olympic was repaired and served 25 years. When it was scrapped as an old ship surely the repairs would be seen.
Also, the repairs could be seen for 25 years.
I never believed the switch theory. Awesome video 💯💯💯
Short answer: nope. Nada. NEIN. No.
It’s always a good day when our friend Mike Brady from Oceanliner Designs uploads a video!
My professional Titanic armchair opinion Gardner is completely full of bollocks. I think he simply wrote the book to cash in on the ships notoriety and is one of the worst people I can think of. He is not only besmirching the name of the ship but the memory of those lost on her.
This was an excellent video that shows both a real dedication to presenting the facts of history but also a real respect for the people of the past who can no longer speak for themselves. I've recommended your channel to friends who are interested in "Titanic" and I always look forward to your new videos. Happy New Year!
He’s wonderful about d
I've never agreed with the switch and I'll never change my mind, Since Titanic was a brand new ship and if the conspiracy was true and a switch between Titanic and Olympic did take place this damage and patch up job would have been spotted at Southampton by eager members of the public, That is just one reason I believe no switch took place.
Not too mention Thomas andrews the father of titanic who knew his ship by heart
would not have spotted a difference?
This whole theory is ridiculous. True titanic historians know this. Plus you can clearly see Titanics hull number on the wreck.
The ultimate death blow for this persistent myth is found in the history of a surprisingly large number of warships - I’ll use the Iowa class battleship Wisconsin as an example:
In 1956, the battleship Wisconsin collided with the US destroyer Eaton, resulting in severe damage to the bow of Wisconsin. In response, the US navy decided to use the bow section of the incomplete Iowa class battleship Kentucky to replace the damaged section of Wisconsin. After the repair, Wisconsin reentered service, only to be removed from the naval register in the early 2010s, having seen combat as late as 1991.
If a warship could be repaired and returned to service with what would otherwise be catastrophic damage, Olympic, an ocean liner, absolutely could be repaired and put back into service in a similar manner.
The Wisconsin story is but one of many - look up HMS Zubian to get your mind really blown.
AFAIK Zubian isn’t the only ship that was once two ships. There was at least one civilian steamer made in a similar era to the Olympic sisters that had a new stern(?) section made following the previous stern being lost
Not the one I was thinking of, but the SS Mapledawn/Manola is one example of a ship that survived losing its bow and then became a new ship
USS New Orleans also had its bow blown completely off by a Japanese torpedo in WWII and was towed to Pearl Harbor for repairs then returned to service. Its actually pretty remarkable how much a ship can be damaged yet repaired and put back to sea.
I was surprised that “Zubian” was not mentioned in this video. USS Minneapolis lost her bow too, but no turrets. USS New Orleans lost her bow AND turret 1. Both were repaired and returned to service.
There was an *entire practice* under various names but primarily called "embiggening" WWII transport and cargo vessels to massively increase their carrying capacity after the war ended. Shipyards added some 20-80% to their overall length by bifurcating them and adding in hundreds of feet of extra length.
It was extremely economical compared to building new ships or even continuing to use them as they were.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Also no. Gardiner is a hack.
If you want to see how much damage a ship can take and still be repaired read the damage report of thr USS West Virginia. The damage to the Olympic was a minor fender bender in comparison.
While I agree Ship's can take a beating, Battleships are designed to take a massive kicking and come home. Ocean liners are not. What WeeVee recovered from would have annihilated any ocean liner permanently.
@Depressed_Nightfury Olympic took the equivalent of a single cruiser caliber round. That is not enough to turn an oceanliner into a writeoff.
@johnshepherd9676 I agree. However my initial point still stands
You do realize that naval ships, Battleships especially are designed to have pointy pieces of metal hit them at high velocity and then go boom with high energy? Their armor is designed to prevent said projectile from penetrating magazines and possibly machinery spaces. They are also truly designed to be watertight with hatches through the bulkheads raised up and lined with rubber to form a tight barrier. Things like that are a major annoyance to passengers looking to stroll about.
@@PeteOtton Exactly what I'm getting at lol
So the insurance money they had left over after bribing all of the inspectors shipyard workers, and anyone else involved in the switch and coverup, (which involved gutting Olympic and moving its fittings to the Titanic to be reinstalled there since those fittings were sold as part of the Not-Olympic's scrapping and had the markings on the hardware that said they were for the Olympic) and moving the Titanic's propellers to the Not-Olympic, just in case the wreck is able to be discovered and documented 100 years later) were all paid well enough to buy their silence for the rest of their lives, since none of the thousands of people involved ever came forward to say what they had done. Not one person ever had a crisis of conscious over their involvement in the theft of millions of dollars and the murder of 1500 people. And the inevitable lawsuits and other such payouts to the survivors. White Star made more money doing that then they would have had they just sold the Olympic for scrap.
Someone's math ain't mathin.
Can you imagine the salvage teams? "Yeah, we recovered this engine part, but all the serial numbers and nameplates were filed off" That and the ships bell with the ships name drilled out and "tITaNucK" scratched in with a penknife. "Wow, that's weird, huh!?"
That's the big problem with industrial-grade conspiracy theories - they need a a cast of thousands, all sworn to secrecy and/or paid off handsomely to keep quiet. Given human nature, such a universal omerta is far less likely than the official version of events.
Not too mention that the titanic sinking nearly wiped white starline out, their stock price plummeted, their reputation was forever tarnished, and they were globally attacked for their lack of safety and how they treated the families of the workers and etc afterwards...
they lost the equivalent of billions in PR, reputation/name brand and stock price
Wouldn't all the yard workers have to be involved in the switch? How do you keep hundreds of ship yard workers quiet? How do you keep all the upaper supervisors, management and leaders quiet for a lifetime? It's interesting on paper but I just can't believe the human factor. Some whistle blower would have come forward. ' I was the guy who changed the names on the boats" never came forward after the most dramatic story of the decade. Not belivable. Love the channel!

The idea that White Star Line would sink one of it's ships and put it's passengers in danger is absurd. No cruise line wanted that kind of press, White Star never recovered from loss of Titanic and eventually was taken over by Cunard.
My rule of thumb with conspiracies is this: if it relies on more than ten to thirty people (at most) to keep a secret, there's no way it's true. As soon as it relies on a bunch of people to keep a secret? There's no way in hell it's staying a secret for long.
It's a surprisingly effective metric.
There have been effective conspiracies involving more than 30 people that have flown under the radar of mainstream history and public perception, but it’s quite rare.
Few involving Governments last more than 15-20 years before being fully exposed and well documented by historians, and usually because they were so badly executed.
That is a surprisingly dumb metric if you consider all the military secrets successfully hidden for years, even decades after the fact.
You may be on to something there, as less than a handful of people knew the true intentions of the Manhattan Project. Around 130k people were employed from scientists, engineers, construction workers, etc. And they didn't even know.
Yes, the old axiom of 3 can keep a secret, if 2 are dead.
That's a dumb rule if you consider all the military secrets held successfully for years, even decades, after a war. Secrets held by sometimes thousands of individuals.

Thank you so much for posting this and posting this together. So often you hear of the conspiracy theories surrounding TItanic and Olympic, and they're written with such passion and certainty that if someone had no idea of the circumstances surrounding either, the conspiracy theories would be compelling.
I also loved hearing about the ships that were stretched in the interview. Another somewhat recent ship, Enchantment of the Seas from Royal Caribbean was also stretched The details of her stretching can be found easily with a google search. It was phenomenal how the new midsection was floated into drydock and the photos of her cut clean in half and then the new midsection placed was really an engineering marvel.
Thank you for explaining this. I have heard of this "theory," before. I was never sure where it originated from. Thank you for your wonderful videos and your thorough work as always.

This is a re-statement of a DVD production released in 2012, titled "Why they Sank Titanic" and later re-released as "Titanic, the Shocking Truth" (the first issue was the better of the 2), but both were essentially the same except for the introduction. It was in 'docu-drama' format with acted sequences along with gathered facts.
I'd love to see you do a tongue in cheek video about the film Deep Rising and the ship "Argonautica" (a nefarious plot to deliberately sink a cruise ship for insurance purposes).
That would be a perfect April Fool's Day vid
It's a severe disrespect to the lives and memory of the men involved in Olympic's planning, building, and sheer craftsmanship to insinuate such things as petty as insurance fraud.
I appreciate you making this video, but man, the fact that this even needs to be said is remarkably depressing. The theory is patently ludicrous on its face. Nothing about it makes any sense, at all, from the moment you first hear it. Critical thinking is at at terrifying new low when things like this become so widespread. Conspiracy theories like this one appeal to the intellectually insecure; it makes them feel like *they* can't be fooled the way others can. Meanwhile, it is actually in sharing their insane nonsense beliefs in the Titanic switch or Flat Earth theory or whatever, that they reveal themselves as idiots and crazy people to others.

As someone who fancies himself an amateur historian, I have a couple questions I ask any time I consider the possibility of a conspiracy theory being true:
1. What would be the rewards and what would be the risk? After all, if you are looking at a rather small reward it does not make sense to risk destroying your reputation and your career or to spend years, possibly even decades in prison.
2. How complicated is the alleged conspiracy? The more complicated it is, the more you risk something going wrong meaning you do not achieve your goal and you get caught most likely.
3. How many people would need to be in on it? The more people you have involved, the more likelihood somebody is going to make a critical mistake or give it the plan away. Especially if a large number of them need to be willing to risk their careers and likely long prison sentences.
4. Was there an easier way for them to achieve the goal(s) of their alleged conspiracy? I feel this one is self-explanatory.
This is why most conspiracy theories fall apart in my opinion such as the fake moon landing, the murder of JFK, and so forth.
spot on, as an amateur historian also, I use the same set of questions to address any outlandish claims.
Yes, Titanic happened 100% how the papers said it happened. ... and Covid was made by bats in a soup kitchen vegetable market ....and Building 7 just fell down all by itself also... just like the newspapers said they did.
Titanic 2 anxiety
@ I’m reminded of a great joke about conspiracy theorists that really nails what you’re dealing with.
A man dies and goes to Heaven. God tells him that since he lived a virtuous life, he will answer one question and the man asks “Who killed JFK?” God responds “Lee Harvey Oswald with his gun from the book depository acting alone. The man’s response is “This goes even deeper than I could have imagined.”
Great points. Especially the one where everyone involved would have to keep their mouths shut, something that would never happen. NEVER.
After watching several 'sunk on purpose' videos in the past and finding them interesting and plausible, this is the ONLY video that actually points out real reasons why a switch was NOT plausible.
Well done! I still find the switch theory interesting though.
We all know Titanic collided with Godzilla's back crystals and got tailed whipped. Resulting to be cut in half
idx what anyone says, the Titanic was purposely sunk. Next thing you're going to try and explain that the earth is a sphere... I mean we've people who believe we've landed on the moon!
(I'm being facetious. In all seriousness, Thank you for such wonderful educational content)
One problem with this 'theory' is Ismay and Andrews were aboard as was their custom when a new ship sailed. They were there for somewhat different purposes in evaluating the new ship's behavior in service. These evaluations would lead to improvements on the next ship.
I really appreciated the fact that you got the actual designer of the QM2 for this video, it's that sort of thing that really puts this channel into a league of its own.
Olympic had a round base wheel house in which Titanic was square, everything on the wrecksite had the 401 shipyard number stamped on it also the propellers, the huge undertaking by switching the two ships is impossible to be kept secret, there was no switch.
Yeah they got switched while side by side, in the most populated port on the planet at the time with over 20-30k dock workers engineers, merchants, fisherman, passengers, and etc,
and no one knew, or they decided to pay off everyone which would have bankrupted them in bribes
yeah right
There is no conspiracy too stupid to be embraced by some people
Honestly I don't even understand this one. Why on earth would they intentionally destroy their reputation by staging the worlds worst tragedy to get an insurance payout when if the ship was too badly damaged to ever use again to begin with, just go to the insurance and get your payout RIGHT THEN! If it's not, then have the insurance fix it. How is it a difficult situation?
Yes this is obviously more believable than flat earth. Who can be easy disproved by stars position over the horizon as you move north or south.
Or rather celestial navigation proved the earth was round back in ancient times.
Its still an stupid conspiracy. And as shown here ships even of the same class tend to have differences. More so after the first is in use.

That´s not a fact exclusive to this matter.
I think I could live to 2125
Not if UA-cam crashes and burns first. One day it’s gonna go down and it’ll be like the burning of Alexandria.
Like most conspiracies there's some plausibility at a very surface but like most it falls apart when one examines the actual details.
It is only plausible if the facts are ignored.
Big occams razor type way to dissect a consparicy is:
How many people must know about it? And, is the incentive big enouge for them to remain silent? If thousands of people are involved, and the incentive is very low, how then does no information outside the consparicy theory exist?
The Manhattan Project is a great example of this.
19:51 the repair work that can be done to ships is incredible. Look up the Lee A Tergurtha sometime. It was a tanker in WWII and was converted into a bulk carrier for the Great Lakes. The modifications were so extensive it’s almost a new ship now.
The USS Wolverine and the USS Sable come to mind here…freshwater paddle wheel passenger steamships became a flat top aircraft carriers on the Great Lakes during WWII.
Clickbaiting the conspiracy theorist, that's great
The sad part is I had a comment on the first video lampooning the whole idea and *I still* got conspiracy theorists.
It's just humans have become so rational that we don't want to believe random chance compounded with hubris and simple mistakes could kill so many because we want an illusion of control in our world.
That’s exactly it. I remember a conspiracy theorist saying that she couldn’t accept that Princess Diana died in a tragic but simple accident. There had to be more to it, because if the world’s most famous woman could die in a car accident, that meant it could happen to anyone.
That’s why people believed humans control storms, the sea, and weather because people want to believe we are in control
Especially as it requires a huge amount of competency and control in the world that frankly, does not exist. The President of the United States can't get a blow job without everyone knowing about it, but somehow huge conspiracies involving thousands of people staying completely silent for decades are just part of the landscape. Yeah, right!
So true, so many of the big conspiracies like Israel/jews controling the world or mh370 to add on to the other commenter revolve around people refusing to be believe that accidents happen and that it almost always takes a plethora of events to cause an accident. Ships, planes, and cars have all improved sadly because of accidents
I think the problem is that people have been lied to by governments so much that they just find it hard to believe anything substantial happens as its been reported.
What happened few days ago in London at Christmas? What did government say about it
I firmly believe that conspiracy theories like these are rooted deeply in people's absolute refusal to accept that sometimes bad things can just happen, accidents can happen, and that often there is not something or *someone* to blame.
And there are some ready to lie for clicks and cash. Some even have diagnosed mental health conditions.
Usually someone has to outright lie or make something up for any traction to take hold and other people just believe it.
I’ve fallen for a few of the myths (never the switch, but the coal bunker fire) but am yet to hear your thoughts on this final one, Mike: that the iceberg itself was also further hidden by a “cold air mirage”, the theory being that on top of being a moonless night where the water was calm and smooth as glass (which we know) that the water being around 29 F (so, some under 0 in non-freedom units around -1 or -2?) it caused the air right by the water to cool, which “bent the tiny amount of visible light over the iceberg, effectively acting something like a sci fi Klingon cloaking device”, so to say the berg was literally not even visible until they were right upon it. The one making the theory claimed that survivors say “ice crystals as fine as dust” floating around the deck lamps aft of the bridge, “giving the cold night a magical feeling”, and that this “is an indication of perfect conditions for a cold air mirage, which is opposite in affect of a mirage caused by war air that a lot of us in the US see when driving, especially out West - I imagine also very common in the Outback of Australia. Basically, the theory claims the iceberg would’ve literally appeared and materialized in front of them seemingly out of thin air due to the light refraction of the dense cold air moving the visible (perceived) horizon line. I can understand the logic, as driving on a hot day I will see an oncoming car seemingly floating 10-20 feet off the ground, but then bits of road will appear under it but I will still see blue sky between me and them where the road dips slightly below my level. The reason I ask your thoughts, Mike, is this: that’s my view in a car at standing eye height, but what difference, if any affect, would there be for an observer at the height of Titanic’s bridge? Would that negate the mirage effect at all? or maybe make it worse? Assuming, a cold air mirage was even happening, or that in the right conditions it could do as the theory maker claims and “cloak an iceberg like a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, only appearing to the Titanic’s crew like Kirk appearing before a whaling ship after stopping a harpoon”. Of which, again, what effect would that cause to an observer in the crow nest in height? Negate the theory, par for the course, or hide the berg more? I’d love to know your thoughts, Mike. Also, I did see it on a program 10+ years ago on something like the Science Channel (doubt it was un-History or anti-Discovery) or maybe Smithsonian? I don’t recall the guy giving a source for the supposed sighting of fine powder-like ice crystals floating around the lamps, as in who the survivor was. So, yeah. Want to know your thoughts, Mike Brady!
Aren’t there entire communities built around these shipyards? At least a few thousand people have to be involved to build that ship in 6 weeks, it would be common knowledge that they are switching the ships.
Even historical tyranny couldn’t keep everyone silent, you think a company like that could do so? Absolutely not.
Try entire cities. Only in Japan with the construction of the Yammato and Musashi where the shipyard was completely concealed from sight and the workers were threatened could such a secret be kept. And that was only about the shear size of the ships, not that they existed.

It's kind of unbelievable that someone was making this accusation as a thought experiment or something. 1,500 people died that night. To assert that it was done on purpose...especially while there were still survivors. They're not just accusing them of destroying an expensive ship and it's not, like, a fictional film or something. They're accusing real live people of what would be a horrific crime against innocent people (including children) done in an extremely cruel way.
These are people. They have real live families. When these accusations were being thrown around, some of the survivors were still alive.
The way to refute a conspiracy theory is with measured intelligence, patience, and facts. Thanks Mike, for all of those things in all of your presentations. Your channel is a gift to all of us who are as fascinated with the great liners as are you. Best!
Thank you for this video. I saw a documentary about the switch theory long ago and it seemed reasonable for the evidence shown, but I never questioned it more broadly or sought any information to counter those claims. It set my mind into "it is possible" -state about the switch, but this video with the wide array of evidence and logic behind it just sets the matter into stone.
If you want to know what shipyard workers are capable of, then look no further than HMS Zubian - where they took the bow section of damaged HMS Zulu and fitted it to the mid and aft sections of damaged HMS Nubian. Repairing the damage to Olympic would have been child's play by comparison.
There was plenty of impressive damage done to both the Grand Fleet and High Seas fleets, that while not as impressive as the reconstruction of HMS Zubian, was patched up after their one tiff and the ships stayed in service.
A fair number of US cruisers around Guadalcanal had a knack for losing their bows and were repaired. (After making an arduous journey with coconut logs across the missing bow.)
