For a four pot it doesn't sound too bad, I like the boxer rumble. But its no match for the flat 6.
Sti and Eco sound "not so bad" for a four-pot. This though, it sounds numb and dumb. Crap
+anotherone10 Porsche should have used a turbo V4 like the one in the 919 Hybrid LMP endurance racecar. That would have made it sound unique and special and it would have had racing pedegree.
+jfv65 Only problem with that is that the Boxster name is derived from the fact that the car is a roadster & has a boxer engine layout.
+jfv65 a V4? it's been like 50 years since a cars had a V4
+jfv65 V4's are complicated and aren't used in cars anymore. Wouldn't make sense in this car...
Nicest looking boxster
Worst sounding boxster.
Such a fucking shame.
+Smith You don't have eyes?
Nothing a good exhaust can't fix.
The way the Porsche logo is done on the back is gorgeous. Really like this car. Sad to see the 6's go but such is the cost of continued progress in the face of stricter and stricter emissions requirements.
I actually love the look and sound of it. Nice work Porsche. Moving with the times and it hits 100 in 4 seconds! Can't complain.
WOW! Subaru finally made a proper sports car!
+William Seroyer I don't get your joke
Wroxster
+William Seroyer Subaru Coxster Spyder STI
+alex b subaru Subaru have always been making a boxer 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine since the 90s
+Patthon Sirilim I sold mine Subaru wrc Spider in 80s
It's funny how people think this is not the proper motor for Porsche.
Flat-4 was THE first Porsche engine!
+N1GHT5 It was (because of the VW Beetle). But shortly afterwards, the Porsche 912 (4 cylinder engine) did not sell well compared to the original 911. More cylinders were and are superior.
And even if I had the money, I could not bring myself to spend so much money on just 4 cylinders and a bit of a turbo...
+N1GHT5 You're not wrong, but the flat-six is the Porsche engine that has mattered most throughout its history. It is integral to the 911. I don't have strong feelings about it in the Boxster though. Whatever works for the car.
+X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Actually in the earlier years of the 911/912 series, the 912 significantly outsold the 911 from 1965 to 1967, which then after that the 912 became more expensive for Porsche to build, decreasing interest in the 912. In response to this, Porsche ceased production of the 912 in 1969 and gave way to the new 914 in 1970, only for it to cease production in 1976 & for a short time in the U.S. market be replaced by the 912E (a '76 911S with the 914 2.0L flat-four engine) before then being replaced by the 924 in 1977, and that ends the story of the 912.
+X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Yeah the most I'd spend on a 4 banger is something like the Golf R.
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X THIS FLAT 4 IS GANGSTER, cylinders are like gold chains - you compensating for something bru?
That is one gorgeous Porsche and the color is so stunning.
*Can someone tell Peter Griffin's son that the name of the brand is PorschE not Porsch. Thank you. Good talk.*
+Roy Robson Not all over the world. Jagwahhhh......
+Malc180s Hey sure! That's definitely a fun way to identify yourself as an uneducated tosser who gives a crap about other languages and brand names so he can ramble on with his brainless mates while he dreams of owning a proper car. Now go on and be a good Geordie and hop in your "Foxhole Astra" will ya? Cheers mate...
+Roy Robson Shut up, fool
+Roy Robson fuck off
+Roy Robson Tell me, do you pronounce the capitol of France as Paris or Pari, with a silent S? There are many words we all pronounce DIFFERENTLY. Unless you are perfect, which is highly unlikely... don't correct other people.
First they turbo the base 911 and now this... Guess i won't be dreaming of a Porsche anymore.
+Sabroe what choice do you have - all manufacturers are doing the same...
+Sabroe 10 years later you might be saying first they make the engines smaller(1.5 Litre) and they add electric motor what is this Tesla or Porsche
Buy a Ducati ;)
+Sabroe Huracan natural aspirated V10 sounds and is beast. Havent heard the V12 of the Aventador in real life yet but I heard it was beast too and great performance.
Graham Tricker Yeah you're right, and it sucks. It's taking the charm away from cars.
That car is jaw-dropingly gorgeous.
looks good.....n being a Porsche, wud drive like no other....however what surprises me is the engine note inspite of being Turbocharged, it sounds rather good
All I can say is that I'm very happy that I have the previous generation.
Great video as always!
Name of the song?
Could this guy look more unexcited, or dress less exciting for that matter? :P
+lambosuperl That's because he was not sent for the Tesla model 3 reveal!
***** Not really - but you tell me, you seem to be a true fashion mogul ;)
+lambosuperl Lol totally agree
+Nick S Go from one extreme to the other... how's this for an idea - Something in between? Take it slow, I know it's a fresh concept!
Tells it all :P
It will do wonders for the residual values of the 6 cylinder cars!
Paul Robinson You have been proved right!!!
I kinda like this guys, loves how he looks and sound very nerdy when he talk about cars.
it doesn't sound to bad but the flat 6 is just WAYYYYYY betterr
+fahad azad Totally agree
0-60mph time is surprisingly brisk!
Beautiful.
Honestly this is great. Most people won't track this & it'll be a fun car around town. The Miata is a 4 banger & ppl rave about it. I think Porsche is making a smart move here & I trust they'll make this thing just as fun if not more than the previous gen.
It sounds OK. Is the weight balance any better?
It wouldn't hurt to smile a little, Hunter! You're doing great, just relax. You want people to watch YOUR videos just as much as the cars you're reviewing.
what song is playing on this video???
Even the sports exhaust sounds dull.
The sound has been growing on me, at first I thought it was horrendous compared to the flat 6, but you what it's nice, it is nice !
Good job on the review, first time I see you. You're very concise and clear ! Cannot wait to listen to more review from you ! Cheers !
To think a clean, 2900lbs, 300-325HP, flat 6, 6-speed, 996 can be had for $17-25k... I think the value on those will soon climb as well as they are fantastic cars once sorted and the sound is on the money.
So what's the mpg now? That's the whole point of the engine change isn't it (more Eco friendly) but I failed to see it mentioned at all.
What's the song in the beginning?
+Saarang Singh Radiance by alex arcoleo
Loved my 3.2 boxster S. Super throttle response and sound. The taster here suggest sounds best on the overrun!
Will be a cracking drive, like to see it against the Focus RS 2.3 turbo 345bhp? Which will be the most playful?
4:00 - I know it would needlessly add weight but those brakes need to be larger for the sake of the looks of the car. It reminds me of the beloved Volvo 850Rs that had 18" rims and some of the smallest rear discs you could imagine.
These videos are awesome. Please keep making them, I love the geekiness of every car you present . Just awesome. Cheers
Flat 4 sounds fantastic, now if only they had reduced the overall proportions of the car down to the around the same size as the original Boxster from 1997 and had the weight down to around ~1200 kilos, this car would be such a joy to drive!.
I just wonder how much would the gen 1 go up when this comes out.
woow that sound way different thats nice to hear something new then the 6 flat
I like the video but who approved that exhaust clip?
Ah it sounds ok, just stick a better exhaust on it. I just ordered a Cayman. Apparently they all sound better in the flesh and they're much much faster than anything in the same bracket 40-50k
Sounds sporty and deep, nice popping and crackling sounds by throttle lift off too! (although it is probable fake..) Nothing wrong with a 4-banger, that's how Porsche started after all (356, 550 Spyder, 912, 914 etc.) Love it! :-)
it is much better fuel consumption with much more torque and power. Good job...
Anyone know the soundtrack in the background of this vid?
what's BR?
as a 986 2.7 owner i see this car has come a long way. i don't think the 4cyl sound is too bad, i like subarus and the toyota 86 though so i might be a bit forgiving about that. this is a great car, the buildquality is outstanding at that pricepoint. the base car is 46.000€ less than a base 911, but i don't think i feels like being that much cheaper.
NAME OF THE SONGGG???
I think the exhaust sounds lovely!
Nicely made
This color is Lava Orange? Tks
This car is gorgeous. Great video and b-roll. The presenting is a tiny bit dull but perfectly understandable. The noise this car makes leaves a bit left to be desired but most 4-cylinder engines don't sound that exciting.
Any hot hatch on the market sounds better. I was hopping the sound would be more boxer than that. Sounds almost like an ordinary in line 4. Hope to see a flatsix in some hot version.
Name of the song/instrumental at the beginning please ?
Sounds like an STI with some artificial overrun crackle.
At 1:38, he says Porsche decided to keep the side scoops "despite the fact that the motor is turbocharged". I would have thought they'd be there ESPECIALLY if it were turbocharged.
Sound? What sound?
Good review bloke
So much want!!
What is the song? It's beautiful.
Nice car, looks like a pleasure to drive...
Waiting for an over-boosted one with a big blow off valve to come out.. Either lots of turbo noise or none at all please and thank you.
I dont think you guys ever mention the dry weight?
Nice looking motor.
I'm actually surprised of how good this little 4 banger sounds. Not as impressive as the old flat 6, but doesn't sound too much like a basic Golf. It kinda suits the philosophy of the car.
The read end looks stunning too, even tho the front is a little boring...
Can't wait to see how this performs against previous Boxster S.
is this a 2016 model?
I like this design a little bit better than the 991 but I just wish they had a turboed flat 6 version. If they made a 718 Boxter GT3, hell ya I'd buy it
+1 but i doubt that will happen since it would cannabalise cayman sales not to mention the beloved 911.
"HEY, it's PorSHA!"- Joey Tribbiani
+ewt415
yey. the how do u pronounce it debate.
Steven Jones Its a joke.
"Still has the side intakes despite the fact it is turbo charged" That is MORE of a reason to have side intakes - more heat to deal with
+quigonjay9 he meant the intakes remain the same small size
I hope the flat four is april fools
i couldn't stop focusing on that background tune! song name please!!
If you change the headers will it sound like a Subaru?
+Bill Murray Depends. They'd need to be unequal length to change it to sound like a Subaru.
No...it sounds like a V10 with performance headers fitted. Go buy one.
will they make a GTS and syider
Beauty = Perfection with a little unavoidable Drawback.
Porch, isn't that what I have on the front of my house there mate?
+Rumblestrip.NET No... that's pronounced CH on the end, not SH!
Im having the worst time deciding what car to get the choice is between the cayman or the boxter and I dont know what color to get either. The question is eating at my soul and I have only a week to decide before I place my order for one.
Very pretty car.
Can't wait for them to put te 2.5 turbo in the Cayman.
looks stunning
correction ----> "wich you CAN'T hear now"....
true that
The lights remind me of the SLS AMG. sickkkk
The Boxster/Cayman has always been about sublime handling balance for the price and I'm sure that's improved even further here. It's a shame about the 4cyl engines, but Porsche had to do something- aside from emissions, too many 911 buyers were stepping down
absolutely
that was 4.09 seconds 0-100kmh pretty fast!
I'm a potential owner but I have to say the sound or lack of could be the deciding factor. It sounds awful in every video I've seen. The base model doesn't come with the PSE option either.
Song name?
That orange is fucking beautiful
"They managed to keep the side intakes even though it's now turbo charged" - well, surely you need them even more now in order to feed the side mounted intercoolers.
+Mubble Mann i was confused by that line too. It is litterally how the engine gets air into the combustion chamber. It wouldnt function without them lol.
Lots of great improvements! However, I'm sure the once used to be "affordabe" Boxter now commands $90k optioned out.
EVO I really wish you would simply credit the music you use in your videos
+axdicaire wanna know what it is to haha
+Latoo Ootal Radiance - Alex Arcoleo
+Jos Schoot Uiterkamp cant find it... ty tho mate
+Jos Schoot Uiterkamp oh found it: www.audionetwork.com/browse/m/track/radiance_107114
+Latoo Ootal Thanks dude. Good studying music.
I like the sound. *subie fan*
looks decent enough
That is beautiful. 0-62mph in 4.0s is 911 killer. Not sure about the 4 LEDs on each front light.
Yes they're different cars with different talents, but 0-62 on the 911 is 4.6 while the 911 S is 4.3. 0-62 is not everything but usually quite a significant measure of a sports car's talents.
+Damian Bragg Porsche always under rates their 0-60 times, the 911s are much faster!
Faris Ali Look at Nürburgring times - these “baby” Porsche’s beat Ferrari’s, Audi R8 and the beloved 911 GR3 RS because of sublime handling paired with a stonking engine!
I didn't get what he said. Because it's now turbocharged, Porsche could have removed the side air intakes? And those brake discs though... they look very tiny and out of proportions to the massive wheels!
love it
ok but where'd you find this host evo, lol
I can't really say why, but I like to listen to this guy. Good job...aaaand the exhaust sounds boring
it's the 80s all over again 2.0 liter turbos what a devolution . i'd much prefer to see the rise of electric sports cars with 1000miles range.
Porsche needs to contact Subaru for tips on how to tune a flat 4 exhaust.
+marsmunky orky Nope! Porsche won't succumb to the inefficiencies of unequal length headers for some rumble. Even Subaru is going towards equal length headers. Say goodbye to boxer rumble.
+marsmunky orky whoever thinks Subaru's flat 4 engines sounds good should consider checking a doctor for possible hearing disability
I like the lines and the colour, looks lively just sitting there. Sort of car that begs to be driven and enjoyed. I'd stick with the manual.
From 6 to 4 cylinders and a price increase of 7%. They must have a good marketing department. :-)
Hopefully Porsche keeps the flat 6 in GTS.
+Momo-Dean Chen im sad to say its unlikely there probably gonna give you this 2.5 4cyc from the s model with supped up internals
$150,000 for a 4 cylinder Porsche here in Australia? hahaha or spend 4 grand more and get yourself a C63 AMG, and spend probably 10 grand more and get yourself the Coupe version all with a twin turbo V8 and more power, hmmmmmm such a tough choice.........
+thesulo12 C63 won't HANDLE like the PORSCHE though.
+santclause1 really? A Boxster is fucking crap yeah might have that Porsche engineering in it, but a boxter is a boxter not a 911, you either buy a overpriced 4 cylinder or get yourself a AMG for the same price with more seats and a lot more character, or just buy a Subaru for $100 grand less
+thesulo12 You think like a weakminded prick. A BOXSTER WILL OUT HANDLE THE OVERPOWERED C63AMG. let alone a SUBARU. Your thinking in the realm of having 1 car. People who buy PORSCHE already have daily drivers.
+santclause1 over priced AMG? Lol you get more car with what your paying for the AMG, but for the boxter your paying for a crap 4 cylinder? Buy an a45 AMG for much cheaper with more power, as much as I love Porsche the boxter has always been Porsches overpriced shit box you will never find anyone with one where I live, actually you only ever see 911's and your occasional Cayman
+EFK1993 TAXES a 911 turbo costs around the $550 grand mark, they said it was to protect our car industry but it still fell flat on its face, so they might get rid of it now,
excuse me who know the name of the background music
Radiance by Alex Arcoleo
How on earth is this only creating 310Lbs/ft?
