The Porsche Boxster has a new name and a new turbo charged 4pot, but how is it to drive?

I’ve got one. I must say that the sound on videos doesn’t do the car justice at all. It’s not a flat 6 but it still sounds really good in my opinion. I’ve had a flat 6 Boxster before and whilst it did sound better than the 718 in the upper range when you were razzing it at 6000rpm, I think the 718 sounds better and more beefy at the lower end - and with it being my daily drive car and not a track car, this works great for me. Just my opinion but I’m super happy with mine.
I don't know about anyone else, but I think the 4-cylinder sound fits the look of the car more than the 6. And it's better than just having another flat-6 sound come out of yet another Porsche.
I have just bought one of these as my first Porsche and trust me, compared to 99% of road cars, the 718 is great and great fun......The other unbelievable thing is the attention it gets. Everyone wants to talk about it, you get loads of looks and what I'm discovering is that if you own a Porsche - people clearly think you are on top of your game - I'm even getting new clients because of it ! LOL!
And you will get new clients. Clients was to deal with successful people and the extra business pays for the car. Simple really but I always buy new cars because i know thats how it works. I have a Mercedes cabriolet now and thats 5 years old but going like new with 220ks on it. thing is I would still keep it but am really thinking about a new Cayman. Im not worried about the motor because Im older and not a boy racer. it sounds good to me.
I wouldn't change the Carfection intro with the shots and sound of the 718 Boxter S. Having said that, I think it is an excellent car. As car enthousiasts, we can't change the regulations and the way the industry is heading. We just have to enjoy what car companies still produce and with that in mind, I think this is an excellent car. I love the new rear of the car.
Some people don't like the 718 name. What they don't understand is the OG 718 was the first small displacement racer to show it can still dance with the best of'em. This 4 cylinder is showing that same principal
You guys deserve way more subs. I even turn off my adblocker for you!
I turn my ad blocker off for the whole of youtube. Share the love (ad revenue).
Sounds like a muscle car !
The turbo's were an inevitable outcome for Porsche and we were slightly skeptical when we heard that the new Boxster was going to have this engine but knowing Porsche it will still be great to drive. We love our 981 Spyder so it'll be interesting to see what they do with the 718 platform. Great video!
Awesome ! I love Porsche's new lights
lifestyle car? I thought the boxster was for people that wanted a sports car that isnt a track car or a gt and also understand that mid engine is better than rear? The lifestyle car is the slk or z4.
Pontiff Sulyvahn TT is and always has been beneath the other german roadsters. The build quality is better than z4 (my gf drives a manual 2008 z4 and the top has already broken and the door latch litterally fell off) but the tt has always been basically an almost FWD almost golf. The tt sort of bridges the gap between civic si fiesta golf, with z4 slk and s2k. then the boxster/cayman bridges those with stuff like the ferrari 360 and audi r8.
***** Its decent but my girlfriend definitly considers it a treat when i let her drive the boxster S lol.
That necklace... Jesus Fucking Christ...
981 looks better (imo), sounds better and is available used (cheaper), 718 has torque and economy but its a sports car not a hgv..
100% agree, especially about the looks. There has been loads of written commented and now generally accepted as the awful noise coming out of the tailpipe (or lack there of) But nobody has spoken about how the smoothing of the front fenders has really softened it's exotic looks and has taken away something the 981 finally established... A presence. The back spoiler also looks like an aftermarket spoiler you would buy at Pepboys...
Very good review, having had the 987 Boxster S the engine was amazing, but I can imagine with the additional performance, torque and MPG theres more than enough to offset the less exotic engine note!
That actually doesn't sound too bad
Very good review no matters the bad weather. That happens! A great sports car no doubt!
You forgot to mention an important point that still keeps it firmly in performance car/track car territory. It beat the outgoing Boxster's time at the Nurburgring ring by a whopping 14 seconds, with a time of 7:42. That puts it in company with the Nissan GT-R, Audi R8 V10, and on par with the Cayman GT4; whilst being I believe the fastest 4 cylinder on the Ring yet. Also should keep in mind that this is the first 4 cylinder sports car Porsche has made in a very long time. The fact that they've done as well as they have is quite remarkable, and sets a great foundation for future models to come. Lastly, I don't think 4 cylinder needs to be equated with 'bad sounding'. The best motorcycles have inline 4 cylinder engines, and they sound incredible (S1000RR, Panigale 899). I'm sure there's opportunity for improvement if they spend enough R&D on it (which - given the current emission standards - they pretty much have to).
"...makes it easier for people you overtake to know you drive a Porsche."
Perfect!!!! I couldn't agree more.
In April in Portugal, it normally rains a lot. Just to let you know. That's why the summer is so good. "Abril aguas mil" which is the same to say April 1000 waters. Next time coem back in June!!! !
Nice job young man
The 4banger sounds ok for a 4banger, but it doesn't sound awesome. Not worth the money, better get a basic 911, not that much more money.
+Chris S
$40,000 more
+Chris S Basic Cayman I'd say
+Marco de la Peña can got only used now, cant order any v6 cayman
asd damnit
+Chris S I don't know, I'm a Boxster owner who regularly looks at 911s and they are a LOT more money. New Boxsters are in the 60s and 70s, all new 911s are well over a 100k at this point. I paid 42k for my 2013 Boxster with 20k miles, and a similar 911 would be 65K-75K. That is a totally different price class.
Seems to be an improvement in pretty much every aspect when compared to the 981, but the lacking sound is something that makes up a big percentage of the thrill a car like this transmits.
Anyone who knows the 5k+ rpm howl of a flat six will not be satisfied with the flat-4 sound. Is it acceptable? Sure. But they haven't made it great .. yet. I suspect it'll come in time. My question is .. why not have a flat-6 2.0 liter with turbos? Wonder what that would sound like.
+MrSlash00r I'm guessing it's harder to put more cylinders into a smaller package and make more power, turbos or not, and still get more mileage out of it. I'm no car expert though.
They will go back to 6 cylinder if no-one buys it, just watch. I think they added the 718 at the beginning of it's name because it wasn't worthy of the 'Boxster' name, and this is just a short term model for a couple of years, then they will drop the 718 and go back to 6 cylinder.
Tim the flat four engine is a big improvement over the six, it’s hugely faster at any speed for a start. Makes the old six feel like it’s dragging a boat anchor. Just traded up to a 718 and sold.
I love this machine. I think now the T is best Boxster and the S is the best coupe. 718 is awesome. I am getting both. Skipping the 4.0
end credits song: Back to Blue by Bruce Maginnis
I don't mind the flat-four. It's still a true Porsche, and like Matt Farah said, anything they could have done to the flat-six would have been incremental compared to the giant leap forward that was that turbo flat-four. You sacrificed the noise and improved in every other aspect. It's way faster due to a massive powerband, it's as good looking if not better, it's more economical, and it's better equipped. It's like the switch from air-cooled to water-cooled. You sacrifice noise but gain everywhere else.
Can you do a video about lotus? Because lotus is life
+Carfection Do the evora 400
+CinemaUnited They've done one
The new lotus exige lightweight
Anyone notice that if you add 'car' to the reg plate you get s-car-go, or escargot = snail = turbo?
Motor Performance quite an upgrade, but overall performance are off the charts for these. Faster then a gt3 around the ring from a few years back. They have this thing dialed for a boxster 👏
Watch The Smoking Tires video for a more accurate representation of the noise.
@carfection , You guys should have the basic courtesy to post the intro and outro song used it the videos. Its been like 50th time i'm posting this.
That’s the Eu not Porsche that has changed the parameters for how they build their vehicles. I cannot wait to get my mits on one of these !!!!
There was another video comparing this to a Mercedes AMG SLC43. The 718 S went past all look-at-me sports exhaust and flatulence, and then the Mercedes passed with an effortless purr. I'm sure the Porsche is excellent in every other aspect but, for me, there's absolutely no contest as which engine note I'd prefer.
very well said!!!
Now do a cayman version
+vicesat just the slightest bit of patience required. Although the Cayman will be less unique and share the same bumpers and vents as this Boxster. Whereas the old Cayman and Boxster had their differences.
Great Performance 👍🏼
Forgetting the noise for a second I drove this car (non S model) back to back with an Audi TT roadster and my perception was:
- Audi steering was a bit too light to my taste but still much more precise than my 2011 A7 (yes I know not quite a comp able car).
- Audi understeer was stlightly present but not overwhelming
- Audi perceived quality felt excellent (buttons click, virtual cockpit response, dash layout).
- Porsche turbo lag very present from low RPMs in normal mode, no issue in sport mode (thanks to Chromo package).
- Handling of the 718 was surgically precise
- built quality feels a bit sturdier in 718.
Even more subjective comment:
- in the Audi men were looking at the car
- in the Porsche ladies were looking at me :)))
- I felt like a pilot in the Porsche (that I am not)
- The Porsche sounded nice with open top. Quiet with top down.
- The Audi REALLY sounded great !!! (top up or down).
- I felt like a rock star in the 718 :p
I am still hesitating between which one to buy ...
+Carfection
Nice vid, shame about the weather. BTW, what is the name that lovely tune at the end ?
+ahlapski I'm very much looking forward to recognize that tune... Soundhound and Shazam weren't very helpful
The 718 looks so much h better than when it was released. SO much better...
Why didn't Alex drive the 718? I might be wrong but don't all the Porsche videos on XCar/Carfection feature Alex?
+Carfection
haha..good call. M2>Boxter. The M2 video was brilliant too.
+®ioT I do agree, Alex's reviews are a delight , this guy is miles, light years behind.
+Carfection were you driving it in the boot? I only saw Matt behind the wheel
Giddy up Batman🥶
Sounds pretty nice. I really like you guys from +carfection letting your other reviewers have a go. I recon this one is better than the guy with the glasses...
awesome summary.
While the car may still be exciting, I feel that with less cylinders and the turbo you gain higher costs on services.
Yayy new XCAR vid, ohh. It's him.
What I see with this step is that a used 2.0 litre Cayman will not be unreachable for people that aren't particularly wealthy. It should not be too expensive in 10 years or so and it'll probably cost as much as 2.0 litre hot hatch to run. For such a great car that's just excellent.
+ianiva the main obstacle to buying porsche, especially used, is maintenance cost. Used porsche cost of ownership is roughly double or more to run vs. a japanese or american sports car.
shaft9000 In terms of what? Servicing and parts? Yeah I don't doubt that. But everyday running with the flat four shouldn't be too bad at all.
Yeah, parts and labor. And being that flat4 turbos are not exactly the usual for porsche, i'd expect a few teething issues, hopefully none worse than the ole' IMS bearing issue was.
+ianiva The current Cayman isn't unreachable either, you can get fairly good used cars already. What exactly do you think will change? The price hasn't dropped, so how is this going to be any different from what we currently have?
John Doe The smaller and more frugal engine. Less road tax, less fuel consumption.
i dont think its the sound quality of the flat 4 thats necessarily the issue, i think its more the fact that it yields a lower redline from the sound of it
Are the colored seatbelts an option when buying the car or an after-market modification?
I swear Alex already did this car and said that the sound was disappointing??!! Am I thinking of something else
"55 torques."
The 718 doesn't sound too removed from a Lan Evo, Wrx STi, new Focus RS, or any 280+hp hot compact. For what you pay, that is not a good thing. Just size down the flat-6 to 2.4L or so. Turbo if you must, but keep the cylinder count.
*****
I won't call them silly but Paddle shifters aren't for every one, even when they are done right, which is where most people get their gripes from. Good Paddle Shifters won't make you miss manuals at all, unless you are masochist.
I prefer and SMG myself.
Even if there were no regulations, these cars would end up as they are today. The days of pure Porsche cars was when Porsche sold a handful cars each year, not as now over 200,000 cars. And these new customers to the bigger and more luxurious 911 or this turbo Boxster, have no connection to those "pure" times. Just think Porsche SUV :)
The same can be said about BMW M-cars, which are now big, luxurious and very fast cars. Not better drivers cars, but then again, look who are buying them and you can't even imagine any of them (but a very few) actually getting close to the car's limits. Purists and actual buying customers are almost never the same.
What happened to Alex goy? Also, this is definitely my dream spec of this car.
Roof of unless the storm has a name!? I think Alex mentioned that, didn't he? :-D
Throw in unequal length headers for that boxer burble?
People gotta stop bitching about technology moving forwards. Times change, boundaries change and expectations should change also. True competitive technology is all about challenging convention. Its no point getting nostalgic about technology, it is always changing. I love classics and vintage cars as much as the next person, in some case more. But I don't expect new cars to keep old technology because 'that's what we're used to'. Buy old cars for old tech and dram, buy new cars for new tech, efficiency and performance. The pursuit of performance has to be a relentless one, otherwise we'd all still be in caves because some hairy bastard decided he was comfortable where he was.
simple. just get a used 981 version, and you save a lot and enjoy even more.
who wants an old car?
You can't trust this young man, we know he is obsessed with the VW group.
If the new 3.0 turbo flat 6 would fit in the Boxster, would Porsche have used it?
+anotherone10 Probably not. They wouldn't want boxster to be an opponent for 911.
I can't imagine this car selling a lot. Potential buyers will want the flat six.
I get the need for downsizing. But why couldn't Porsche keep the 6 cylinders but just reduce the displacement? I'm sure you'd get the same results, while retaining some of the Porsche character.
Plus, I know they're less efficient, but why aren't sports car manufactures using superchargers? You still have the ability to boost the engine, without affecting the sound. This has been proven with the F-Type.
Dan If they reduced displacement they would reduce power, sorry but F-type sounds horrible
they cut our the part where the dog Pisses on it.
That rear lip spoiler is fugly though.
Song at closing?
Torques? Really?
+Zanpa at least he got the correct unit of measurement ~2:43. Too bad he sounds like yet another uneducated auto journalist with the earlier statement of how many "torques" the new Boxster has over the previous model.
So.. people who think a horrible sounding four pop is worse than a great sounding six are haters? That's a REALLY stupid statement.
..and yeah.. It sounds like shit. I'm sure it handles better than the previous model, and they have thrown extra luxury at it to up the worth a little. Still.. If i put that amouint of money into a fun car, it needs to not sound like a crappy hatchback.
I think I would prefer an M2.
Other cars with turbo fours sound far better than the 718. Come on Porsche is this really the best you can make it sound?
Good review but all of the other UA-cam pages have had their reviews of those car out for a while now. If you want more views, try to get it out faster
Yeah, people still don’t get it: The future of 718 as well as 911 is electric engine support and beyond. How is it going to be made? Gradually. Porsche will draw the update path as they will progress through that evolution. Nobody knows the final list of ingredients or the bill of materials - not even Porsche. Technology must mature. Needs to become available, achievable. And compromises must be achieved. Porsche will do it in the way which they believe would not upset the fan base. Now, into the hybrid engine package - how many cylinders you’d need with that at the the end of the road? Well, probably three. Maybe two... who knows? The chassis must become lighter... and lighter... and lighter. So why bother with the big motor concepts??? Why bother with the boxer even?! - Yup! Boxer has to go 2. Why petrol? Maybe diesel, maybe rotary? Maybe engine in every wheel??? Who knows where innovation will take us?
Who cares about 2 more miles per gallon? Give me my six cylinders and their great sound back!
bring back the pot engine - this sounds like a lawnmower - #### the environment
Put unequal length headers on it :D
You ask me? Well, It sounds bad..... There is just something irreplaceable about a NA reving up. But now that new car policy is forcing all cars to go down in size and turbo. I can't blame Porsche
you have the long bonnet sls amg, you have hyper cars with extreme prices and luxury and coupes and everything but never am i going to see a mercedes A Class amg competing against other hot hatches ...why..!!!????why ????why??????
Where is alex? Alex!!
this vs TTRS?
i'm not that bummed about the new engine, but... it looks too much like a frog imo.
If you produce a 911 with a flat 6, then it can't be impossible to produce a boxster with flat 6 because of "regulation". This just sounds like an excuse. Why not improve the car but keep the flat 6 ? The better fuel economy is abolutels marginal and I'd say totaly irrelevant when you take the number of these produces into account.
The only reason to go flat4 seems to be the artifical distance to the 911. I think that prices on the used marked for the last flat 6 gen will relatively soon be above the prices for a new one.
+Patrick Schulz Actually, Porsche engeniers were interviewed as to why they went for the flat 4. They said that due to emission rgulations they simply had no other choice but to go for turbo charging. Problem was, though, the engine bay of the Boxster is really small and cramped. Installing turbos on flat 6s ended in really dangerous thermal problems and several cases of overheating. Of course thy could just get rid of the trunk and get more space, but they could not do that for some reason. Thus, to safely install trubos and not having to worry about owners perishing in burning wreckages (happened with other models and that is nothing short of bad publicity) they developed a new flat 4, which gave them enough room for the trubos. That is the official story and owning a Boxster S myself, which gave me the opportunities to actually see the engine bay, I believe that to be true. It is really cramped in there... The 911 has a lot more space. I will keep my older Boxster, however. For now that is.
+DrakorGaet
Do you know, if a facelifted model is subject to new regulations ? Otherwise, why not keep making the "old" engine for another 5 years ? Do they suddenly become illegal to sell ?
+Patrick Schulz I am sorry, but my knowledge about these regulations is very limited. I do, however, believe that the decision to introduce the engine now has something to do with their startegic decision making process regarding marketing and product management for the coming years. Thus, introducing the engine now must have some ulterior motive regarding some form of startegy for the future. I am far to inexperienced in exploratory innovation decision making processes as of now so all I could do is speculate about the motive.
I don't doubt it's a GREAT car, but that motor doesn't really sound great at all. A subaru WRX sounds better to my ears.
Shame the mid-engine Porsches are slowly losing their souls, all for the sake of progress and regulations, etc.
BTW: That area around Guincho/Sintra is lovely - there's some good roads there!
"torques" is not a unit of measure
I would hate to live some where that rains all the time !
Almost every video I watch it's raining ! I would not want to drive super fast cars on wet roads every where ... I just wish I could own any of the cars they show though 😢
+michael vickers that's britain for you... funnily enough, they are also the people who buy the most convertibles relative to all cars sold. weird lot over there...
+givemeajackson
Nicely put 😎
Yo check how wet the interior is at 0:31!
xcar !! amazibg vid
Same 4 cylinder story on each channel. So boring
+g00dfeeling Well... it is the same car. Do you want each channel to make up different facts about the car?
+Henry Floyd At least they could use different sentences. Someone could like 4 cylinders more or less, it is not possible that everyone has completely the same impression.
g00dfeeling That's true. The comments section definitely speaks to what people think about 4 cylinders though. "No 6 cylinder, no Porsche!" "Why not just get a WRX?" I think it's hilarious, but people seem to be quite upset over it.
So if you really want a flat six engine a better place to look for it is actually a Subaru Legacy and not a Boxster...
O,,,,,the move to forced induction 4cly drivetrain across the Boxster/Cayman cars is HUGH..... The aural signature made up from the out going models 6cly's exhaust and induction is memorable. Times they are a change'in... I'll keep my MY98 C2S 911 (993) air cooled if not only for its scream........ The coupe has the time honored DIY exhaust mod know as the LMPP.... Basically a 2" dia tube "short circuit" at the muffler can exterior.
The reason, which none of you reviewers bothers to mention, why earlier cars like the 718 were so wonderful, is that car makers back then were mostly free to make whatever they wanted. Porsche did not give up on the flat 6 and Porsche did not want to go turbo. Porsche- and everyone else- is being forced into it by nameless unelected regulators. It is shameless and disgusting that you reviewers make it sound like this is the kind of "progress" Porsche wanted when you all know it most certainly is not.
+Charles Miller "Nameless unelected regulators"? You mean the legislative branches of western countries? Those were elected and they created laws to reduce CO2 emissions. It is progress because they achieved more power with less even though it doesn't sound the same.
Turbo noise is gastly
Sounds terrible...
Your reverie is getting out of control there, fella.
+Nik Brudar fuckin' Nik Brudar.
Willy Lamb-Orgel I see you missed me.
+Nik Brudar It's ALWAYS Nik Brudar.
Willy Lamb-Orgel You can't go wrong with Nik Brudar
Gas is going away to be replaced by electric, ion fuel cell technology w/ molten salt fuels, and hydrogen in 2 flavors of electric or combustion...
Sound isn't that bad as people say
sounds good, would sound better with a flat 6. Not sure why they did that.
+Behemothokun everythings going turbo to meet european emissions standards
The last one met emissions standards. Quote from CarMagazine "He also said that in normal driving, the fuel efficiency of the old 3.4 and new 2.5-litre flat-four is ‘about the same, but the new engine has much more power’."
The old pdk boxster S had CO2 of 188g/km
New pdk 718 Boxster S has C02 of 167g/km, hardly any difference, about 10%. If no-one buys it, I betcha it will go back to 6 cylinder. They just did this to keep it away from the 911.
my mistake, i meant "fuel efficiency" i.e. - high torque@lowRPM+ loooong cruising gear = "efficiency"
+carfection what is the price of this car in the UK?
it is $143 000 in australia ( £76904)
I bet we are getting raped by Porsche Australia
Yeah that's quite expensive. The Base 911 Carrera costs about that much here. The new 718. Boxster starts at £41,739 and the. Boxster S at £50,695
+Miguel N. NORTH KOREA
no it can't like a B6
Get a second hand 996/997.
You can get a 996 turbo for like 35-40 grand now. That's what I'd do.
+Jason Ortiz exactly and a 911 has more space inside. For the money of this boxter you can get early 997 turbos for that here in the UK.
not all of us want an old car someone else has used.
1:43 Just a random dog about to piss on the wheels... like you couldn't re shoot or find that 3 seconds of footagew again sans dog? Not that I dislike the dog. Just effing odd.
Porsche has now jumped down a category for me now no 6 cylinder engine no manual gearbox it may aswell be an Audi TT not liking the way new German cars are going they are just not fun or envolving they need to go back to the drawing board
Wow, the sweaty sock has put on some timber, just buy a secondhand GTS
bring back the 6 pot engine - this sounds like a lawnmower - #### the environment
