    This is exactly why I taught myself how to do my own hair and even friends hair. The last time I went to a salon for a protective style, I ended up with a dent in my head from tight braiding. Never again

    When you have people doing your hair who really despise you or despise the type of hair on your head, that is going to have an effect on the health of your hair.

      Sometimes they don't hate you, sometimes it's just culture, to get "neatness", they grab every single strand on your head into the braid.
      Knotless braids are a blessing, yet there are people who say they like the knotted braids better because it doesn't fuzz up and stays neat longer. So braiders don't want to be blamed for fuzzy looking hair.

    Great video! Another Idea for a video if I may be so bold is looking into the chemicals that coats synthetic hair. A lot of women say protective styles damage their hair but what they don't realize that synthetic hair is full of chemicals that cause itching, sores and damage at the very least.

      I always said protective styles were not protecting natural hair. In 2024 people are realizing this now. Protective hair wasn’t meant leaving it lasting weeks or months. Got2be…😥 I don’t know why everybody couldn’t see their edges silently moving away. Now everyone is claiming genetic alopecia. Nah. It’s traction alopecia and no one wants to hear it.
      I used to tell my sisters stop with the heavy braids and the wigs but I was a jealous HATER though. Now I cry with them, frequently.

    This needs to be taught too all stylist no matter what hairstyles you do! People think protective means don’t touch until it’s time to take it down not realizing your only doing damage to your hair! Great video let’s pass the knowledge around!,

    I was with y’all…until the product placements 😬🙄 Just so we’re clear: oil DOES NOT moisturize, it lubricates and coats. Oil also does not “lock in” moisture; it can, however, DISPLACE moisture (water). What happens when you mix oil and water? What happens if you spill oil on cloth, and try to get it out? Oil also attracts dirt, and can clog pores. Further, spritzing your hair with a leave-in/water mixture is doing NOTHING but sitting on the hair, causing buildup. Why? Your cuticles have to be open to even receive product, and that process happens when you shampoo (the chemicals in the shampoo, plus hot-ish water raise the cuticle layer of the hair). Then, when you condition, using lots of water, THAT’S when moisture (again…water) is “sealed” into the hair (moisture is always going to evaporate over time, usually after about 4 days…it’s not permanent). The chemicals in the conditioner close the cuticle layer of the hair to prepare the hair for styling, and the hydrogenated (key word here) oils and emollients help lubricate the hair, add shine/sheen, and make the hair easier to style.
    With that said…just wash your scalps, y’all. All that excessive, every-day spraying and oiling will only lead to buildup (no matter how “light” they say their products are), and keep it simple. There is some REALLY good advice in this video (like the take-down part 🤙🏿), to be sure, but there are also some product plugs to get y’all to buy things. Recognize the difference, and take the good information that they are putting out there.
    Like the stylist at the beginning said, our hair thrives when it’s left alone. We get braids and such for the exact reason to…well…leave our hair alone. 🤷🏿‍♂️

    I haven't gotten braids like these since I was a teenager. I always hated when my mom made me get braids because the girl that did them pulled my hair so damn tight and my scalp was pounding after. I will never get braids again. It's traumatic to be honest. I suggest crochet if you want to get them. The stylist I found does not pull tight at all and my hair grows great!

    I'm so glad I found this video on your website. I've Never braided or grown out my hair before. I've been cutting it since I was little because in my country, public school students are supposed to cut their hair and my mom is too afraid of me getting hurt since I literally have a problem with my head, to let me braid it. My hair shrinks alot and I'm the only one who cut her her hair before going back after Corona break to finish so I'm the only person amongst my friends who hasn't braided her hair. I thank God I found this video. Before I start my braiding and hair care journey it is really going to help me and even after the journey. I'm literally going to keep watching it and subscribe to this channel so that I can take care of my hair better. Thanks 👍😍

    There are some great practical tips shared here. Thank you for that. One question I have is when are we going to start seeing more *loose/puffy* styles offered from stylists?

    • @wetheunruly
      @wetheunruly  4 роки тому +3

      Good question, I think a lot of stylists offer loose styles. It might be a matter of what's in demand. For example, we offer braided styles and loose styles with our mobile styling service (yeluchi.un-ruly.com/styles/) but the braided styles are the most popular. (Given, we do have more braided styles than loose styles, so it might be a self-fulfilling prophesy).

    I taught myself to love my hair. I use to always hate my hair and straighten it all the time. The heat would burn my hair and my scalp causing me to lose some hair in front like my edges were thinning out. My father has kinky hair and my mom has loose curls and I always wanted my moms hair. But she taught me how to love my hair. Keep in mind I have thick 3c hair. Sometimes it gets on my nerves but I love my hair. I did the big chop and my hair grew longer and thicker. I do twists on my hair since its more protective on my hair.

    The only thing I got from this video is that most women who experience hair breakage and pain from getting protective styles should just not get protective styles because let’s keep it real here.… Most people don’t have access to a hair studio like this or even a hair stylist that knows how to properly install protective styles without causing a bunch of damage. Or most of us don’t have the money to pay for premium services like this. Maybe one day when I’m making enough money I’ll be able to go to a nice salon like this but the last time I ever even seen one of these in person it was like 300 bucks+ for a service. I’ve seen some charging upwards of 700 bucks per service. No hate, they are doing a service that is longer and more tedious that is going to have great benefits on your hair but not everyone can afford that….

    19:07 I don't have such coarse and dry curls (I'm s 3c) so correct me if I'm wrong, but even if you have a dry scalp, I think you still need to clean it often. We live in very polluted cities, and in protective styles, the scalp is exposed. Washing once a week or less doesn't seem healthy, because how on earth will your scalp breathe?
