I always liked the way Nagito had radicalized the concept of hope. It shows that anything can be twisted into something evil, no matter how good it starts out.

And the opposite also holds true. Anything can be made good again if you're willing to erase and make right your past mistakes and sins.

It is true. That is one of the reasons I love him. Other people, especially those who "matter", seems so hopeful and strong. In Nagito, despite his intention, there is always some kind of twisted, "black" clouding. I dont think anyone can straightforward say he is good or bad.
Despite all that, deep down he also has a dream as anyone else. He is so gray, indiscernable, unpredictable as human should be. That aside, there is a charm about him, that smile, that cleverness... making many draw to him, even in a confusing way.
I think Nagito and Shuichi are most human of all Danganronpa. I love Shuichi, even though his crush and best friend are dead, he still has other friends, and he grows plendidly. But Nagito, my baby, I dont know where he is going to, since no one see his "dream", meaning no one ever has a chance to understand him...

As insane as Komeada is, man was it badass when he survived playing russian roulette with 5/6 chambers loaded. It's interesting how much faith he places into his luck. Down to leaving portions of his plans completely up to luck (drawing the straws or orchestrating his own murder).
I'd honestly like to hear your opinions on which game you think was better DR VS SDR2 , down to better plot twist at the end, characters, setting, etc.

      Saturnine
Plot twist at end goes to DR 1 for sure.
The end of SDR2 felt way more convoluted and unnecessary, the way the set up the characters made the thought of All of them falling into despair unbelievable.
If it say went with, Your in a game and you went crazy when the world ended, then yeah.
The only thing that really bothered me was how they didn't go back to ultimate despair. (Im taking DR3 with a grain of salt because of its rushed stupidity)

Here's an interesting thing I realized.
Komaeda, and Munakata, both believe and fight for hope. But neither of them really understand it.
Nagito believes that the greater Despair gives rise to a greater hope. So naturally the greatest despair will give the greatest hope. And while he isn't necessarily wrong, he isn't right either. Hope doesn't need despair to become greater and neither does despair and vice versa. Hope comes from within and others and Nagito is so far gone in his belief that he'll probably never understand.
Munakata likewise thought the destruction of Despair was the way to give hope. But he's just getting rid of despair but becoming just as bad. He isn't solving anything just looking at one part of the problem.
Naegi and Junko both understand true hope and despair. Naegi knows that to win against despair you must give others hope and save them from despair. Junko understands that to spread despair you have to take away hope.

craxnor "Hope doesn't need despair to become greater"
"Nagito is so far gone in his belief that he'll probably never understand"
I totally agree with you! It took me a while to understand the first sentence myself, since I read so many theories but now I get it. An example of that is when Chiaki spent a lot of time with her classmates. It was obvious in DR3 Despair Side Ending Song that, you don't necessarily 'absolutely need' despair to create hope and make it bigger. Hope could also come without harsh motivations from despair.
But even though Junko kept taking away hope, her classmates were peculiar..Makoto particularly.

    • @snowboundwhale6860

Nagito isn't entirely wrong but it seems like a correlation=causation misunderstanding
Greater despair doesn't necessarily create more hope, it's just that however much hope it does create is more visible than the same amount of hope faced with a much less despair; using hope as the constant and despair as the variable, the more despair there is, the more dramatically it's contrasted by the hope. In this example, the hope hasn't changed, it just seems more significant because it exists in the face of worse circumstances.
ofc, hope isn't always constant, but it is a much more consistent feeling within people then despair is, that is to say despair is caused- hope just becomes evident as a result, or is otherwise inspired. In the absence of hope, that is when despair settles. It's like how you already have blood, but you can't see it easily unless you get cut or bruised. Or that's my take on it anyway.

To be honest, Nagito's one of the people I absolutely love as a character, but if I saw him in real life, I'd either dislike him, be scared of him, or both.
I would probably still consider the fact he probably had to go through some sh*t to become the way he is, but I would still leave him alone in fear for him in the second game.
If I met him while he was living a peaceful life, like with the rest of the students, he'd probably just be someone I don't engage with much, so I neither like nor dislike him. I would probably agree that he's strange along with everyone else, but I probably wouldn't care much about that.

I'm the type of person that likes to get in touch with 'loners.' I was super awkward and lonely for bits of my elementary and middle school life, but, about halfway into middle school, I started to try and put myself out there. This whole thing started around the time that I actually had a solid friend group and a new kid (super socially awkward. Was home schooled, but was already perceived as weird due to rumors that spread prior to his arrival. It was a very small town, so if you hadn't met someone, you'd almost definitely have heard of them.) He sat alone at lunch and I felt really, really bad for him, so I eventually went over and sat with him. None of my friends would come over to our table at first, but, eventually, my closest friend in that group came over, and the rest did so gradually. I managed to introduce him to a social group he did well in and I felt super happy about that. He's still pretty awkward, but we talk to this day. I remember one of my teachers thanking me for being nice to him. Even people outside of our friend group got curious and would ask me questions if we were ever paired up for projects (Normally asked if we were dating. Then asked why I hung out with him when I said no.)
I did the same sort of thing after I moved and went to a much bigger high school. I tried to keep everyone connected and, even now, I'm a foster mom for strays and abused/neglected animals. They're prone to lashing out and they take a lot of patience to bring around, but it's all worth it when they end up happy in a safe home.

I find myself wondering if Nagito ever received any sort of treatment for his illnesses. All evidence seems to suggest no (like his susceptibility to the Despair Disease and how quickly it progressed), but it's been confirmed his white hair isn't his original hair color but a result of his illness, and a very rare side effect of some forms of chemotherapy is the destruction of melanin (what creates pigmentation in hair, eyes, and skin), which could explain his white hair and pale appearance. I actually had a therapist (she took a leave of absence for obvious reasons) who was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma with only months to live, and despite the odds she managed to beat it. And that's without the futuristic technology and advances in medicine we see in the Danganronpa universe.
On the other hand, dementia is far harder to treat. Even assuming there's something in their universe that can slow it down or stop it entirely, you can't regain lost brain matter (well, unless he underwent some sort of radical Izuru-like transformation). Probably why it's easier to assume he just accepted his diagnoses and trusted that his luck would determine if he survives or not. Although both he and Nekomaru have outlived the prognosis of their respective diseases, so maybe Hajime used Izuru's talents to help them or something (or, as most speculate, Nagito is surviving due to his luck and Nekomaru's overall good health aside from his condition is prolonging his life).

Great analysis overall. One thing I really liked about this is that you didn't immediately dismiss Nagito as a nihilistic sociopath, nor a precious misunderstood cinnamon roll. Nagito is not evil, he is actually a very well-intended individual. But at the same time, he is a horribly flawed person. His flaws are what hold him back from being a completely good person despite his good intentions. Nagito wanted to give the other students as much hope as he could and wanted for them to survive, he was even a very good team player in most if not all of the class trials of SDR2. However he is also extremely paranoid, narcissistic, impatient, manipulative, crude, and a hypocrite, which is why the other students don't trust him as much. Overall I agree with most of your points on the character.

Allow me to elaborate on my point on him being narcissistic because I probably could've phrased that better. I was trying to hint at because Nagito is extremely lucky, he sees that as his absolute power and sees himself as almost like a messiah of sorts. He believes that with the power of his luck on the side of the other participants, hope will rise above all else. Because of this, Nagito believes that hope is what matters and nothing else. He does in fact hate himself, partially because he might blame himself for the deaths of his parents and the other participants. But at the same time, he has this god complex and genuinely believes that the end results will justify the means of getting there.

    • @wombatcuddles
      @wombatcuddles 8 років тому +26

That could be it. _Although_ the Kamukura project involved literal brain experiments to give him talent, whereas Komaru was completely average and just went through a grueling and horrific experience. So Komaeda thought that she could become hope simply by character growth from that.

Maybe his way of creating hope remained the same, where the greater despair created = the greater hope, but this is still to some extent interesting and good development for him. He doesn't discriminate anyone the same way as before but that's also dangerous since basically anyone can become his guinea pig now.

The Japanese version shows much of an aborted love confession due to "kimi wo... kimi no naka ni" (etc) due to 'wo' implying that with the grammar it is speaking about the one he's speaking to, in this case Hinata, so if finished, it would end up as "Kimi wo aishiteiru." But instead, he has to change the grammar of what he was saying in order to change it to "the hope that sleeps within you." Hope this isn't too scrambled aha.

  • @shalimarr2974

I really really enjoyed this analysis. I'm another Komaeda fan and I've found him to be a relatable character for myself, a person who has psychotic bipolar disorder. Hear me out, lol. Komaeda calls himself the worst, feels hopeless about his disease, and in general, is pretty suicidal(Always willing to die for hope, hmm sounds like someone wants to escape the cycle). Sounds a lot like depression if you ask me. From the very beginning, it seems as though he had a rough life. Aside from his parents' passing and being kidnapped, he mentions in his free-time events that his parents never praised him. Along with that, being stuck in the endless cycle of good luck and bad luck doesn't help. So he acts in order to feel in control (like you said in your video). However, I bet that at least once, he's felt as though he has no control. I believe he totters between this hopeful self and this miserable self; on side thinks he can control his life, the other thinks he can't. This reminds me of an episode I had where I gravitated between joy and despair. Furthermore, his thinking that he can control his life like that sounds like my psychosis where I believed that I had control over world events. In conclusion, I love my psychotic bipolar child.

Okay well. Here goes. (Fair warning it's like five pages and not well organised, so I'm sorry. Also I just copied and pasted it from another comment I made on someone's LP so there's that)
So upon the reveal that the majority of the cast in this game was Ultimate Despair, I come to you with a brand new perspective on the events of chapter five. Now, the game will try to tell you that Komaeda wanted to kill them all, and I’m sure they have their reasons (which I will explain) but… that’s wrong. According to my own beliefs, based on the evidence I’ve seen, I believe that everything Komaeda did in chapter five was just another elaborate hope versus hope contest.
Oh yes. You read that correctly. Komaeda was just pulling the same hope crap he normally does, crazy suicide plan and all. Allow me to explain, but first, let me ask you something: What’s the one thing Komaeda fundamentally believes?
That a great despair will yield an even greater hope.
Now, I’m not so naive as to suggest that Komaeda thought his death would lead to a great despair. Nobody believes that; not even Komaeda believes that. At this point Komaeda knows that nobody really likes him, and he himself doesn’t even like him, so naturally he wouldn’t believe his death would bring a great despair. He knows it won’t. Hell, most of the island at this point would prefer he was dead already.
      Regardless,
he kills himself. (Yes it was technically not a suicide but I’m going to treat it like one for simplicity’s sake).
Now, as stated previously, many people believe that naturally Komaeda was trying to kill everyone except for the traitor, as everyone but the traitor is Ultimate Despair. And what does Komaeda hate more than despair? Besides, with the way his luck worked out with the traitor conveniently killing him, and the odds of everyone but the traitor were slim to none, you can understand exactly where people got that idea from however… *you’ve got that wrong!*
First of all, if Komaeda’s plan was to wipe out despair, _he would have wiped out despair_. I mean, they would all definitely be dead except for Nanami, no questions asked. He would have been much more thorough in his plan, specifically the part of evidence destroying, and he wouldn’t have made that video.
Now, the evidence I’m talking about specifically is all the evidence in Komaeda’s room. Y'know, the critical evidence that Komaeda made no attempt of hiding, or destroying. Let’s go through the evidence piece by piece:
      1) The gas mask, rubber gloves, and the blue aluminum seal were all left under the bed. Anybody who is above five years old could probably tell you that under the bed is the first place anybody checks when looking for something someone else might be hiding. Now, you might ask: but how would he dispose of any of this evidence? To which I say, the rules only ban littering and destroying the environment. So, he could just throw it out conceivably anywhere indoors that wasn't his room, and no one would check.
      2) Up next we have the bottle of poison in the extremely obvious fridge. You know where would have been a better place to hide poison that needed refrigerating? The pharmacy. Or the market. Anywhere else that came with a fridge, instead of going out of his way to drag a fridge into his room. All he would need to do is just bury it somewhere in the back of one of the refrigerators hiding behind all these other items so no one could see it, and the likelihood of anyone finding it EVER would be slim to none.
      3) The file? In the bookshelf? Now granted this evidence proved to be unhelpful in the end, but putting it on the bookshelf? A case of hiding it in plain sight? Or maybe he just put it there because he knew they would check it, especially since they KNEW about his prize from the final dead room. And it doesn’t matter anyway since he tore out the important parts of that file anyway. And he clearly destroyed those, so he could have conceivably have destroyed anything else.
      4) Finally, the most damning evidence, is the shiny pink box with the journal on the table. Y'know, the most obvious thing you could have left in the most obvious place ever. No attempt was made there. None. Negative attempts were made with that specific one, and you know it. This evidence is important as this is the evidence that’s used to out the traitor. Even if Nanami didn’t out herself, they still stood a chance at learning it was her because of the diary entry she wrote. He didn’t know who the traitor was, but he knew upon reading that diary that HINATA would know. And yes, obviously Komaeda would know Monomi can’t write. He would have asked the same questions everyone else did upon finding it, and obviously Monokuma would have told him.
Now, if you’re going to tell me this was the best Komaeda could do, I downright don’t believe you. Komaeda has already proven himself to be highly intelligent, and in all likelihood, the most intelligent person on the island, and if you really think that would be the best HE could do, then you’re clearly forgetting his abilities. You can’t even say by the time he’d be able to do anything about all this evidence he’d be dead because he could have actually taken care of all this the day before, or the day he swapped out the poison etc… so there’s no excuse for this pitiful attempt at destroying the evidence, if you can even call it that. You also can’t say he didn’t think people would search his room. That’s an insult to his intelligence. After pulling the crazy stunt he’s been pulling for the few days there’s no reason they WOULDN’T try to search his room.
Which is why I say he didn’t try to hide that evidence. It makes more sense to explain the incredibly obvious crucial evidence as Komaeda intentionally leaving it in those places so everyone else stood a chance to find it. That evidence was absolutely key in solving what Komaeda had truly done. It was even essential in revealing the traitor. In other words, it gave the other side, Ultimate Despair, a chance.
Now, the video however, used to be the bane of my existence, however if Komaeda had genuinely planned for the traitor to be the only survivor, the likelihood he would have made that video is slim to none. Komaeda probably believed the traitor already _knew_ the information contained in Nezumi Castle, after all why wouldn’t they? However even if they didn’t know that information, Komaeda had other motives for making that video: deceiving Monokuma.
I’ll get to why that’s important in a bit. I promise, but I’d like to go back to his intentions for a bit.
Now, as I’ve stated before, I believe that this was another hope gambit, just in extreme mode. (Ultimate mode? I’m not funny I’m sorry). Now I have stated before, Komaeda didn’t believe his death would be the great despair, so what DID he believe it was? The trial. His death is irrelevant, it only matters to kickstart the trial, the real despair. Or, more accurately, the vote.
This is Komaeda’s final play, and what a better way for him to do it than to have the ultimate hope face-off? A contest of hopes: which hope is stronger, a hope that was never tarnished or the hope of those ravaged by despair overcoming themselves?
Think about it: Ultimate Despair is despair in it’s purest human form, or despair in it’s purest form. To Komaeda, they are the embodiment of an absolute despair, the exact opposite of an absolute hope, which is what Komaeda wants to create. Except, what did I establish Komaeda fundamentally believes? *The greater a despair the greater the hope that will result of it*, and who better to create an absolute hope than the lowest of the low, Ultimate Despair themselves?
Now, some may say that Komaeda would find those who into despair absolutely irredeemable, as though they can never return, but that blatantly contradicts his beliefs. While Komaeda definitely holds those who fall into despair in contempt, but that doesn’t mean he believes it’s an inescapable void. In fact, if he did, then his beliefs wouldn’t even be able to exist. How can you believe hope comes from despair if you believe those who fall to despair can never escape it?
This is not only his ultimate hope contest, but it’s a test of his beliefs. Should Ultimate Despair win against the overwhelming odds stacked against them, then they are worthy of being representatives of absolute hope. If they don’t, then absolute hope can only be represented by those who’ve never been corrupted at all. Komaeda technically can’t lose this. If the traitor wins, then they are absolute hope, if Ultimate Despair wins, then they have become absolute hope. There’s no losing for him.
      Technically.
      Here’s where things tricky.
As stated, the real despair to overcome is the vote. The real despair in this trial comes from voting for the traitor whether they want to or not, or being stuck at a standstill unable to figure out the truth and being forced to vote randomly, or that he killed himself.
Once they realise it’s technically not a suicide, against all odds the whole trial comes to a grinding halt. After all, if he didn’t kill himself, who did? And so Komaeda’s game really begins.
Now, the odds of the traitor surviving at this point is 5/6. Inversely, the odds of Ultimate Despair dying is also 5/6.
Now think about this: *what* was Komaeda’s talent again? His luck, which he had an unyielding belief in even when planning his death, and his luck doesn’t just die with him. So long as he’s involved, so is his luck. It’s a powerful weapon to have at your disposal, so long as you know how to use it, and Komaeda’s proven multiple times he knows how to manipulate it to his favour.
Backtrack a second, because I’ve brought up those odds for a reason. You remember the Russian Roulette incident? Of course you could do. Who could forget that crazy stunt? Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s symbolic as hell.
Now a lot of people think that the five bullets represent Ultimate Despair, with the blank representing the traitor. Since he survived, it was foreshadowing for the traitor being the one to kill him, as they are the only pure one in the group. The 1/6 chance he had in surviving also represented the 1/6 chance the traitor would kill him.
And while that’s true, that’s only half of it.
Think about it like this: as I’ve said before there’s a five out of six chance that Ultimate Despair will lose, and die as a result. Russian Roulette is a similar life or death situation. Let’s say the bullets in Komaeda’s Russian Roulette don’t just represent the chances of the traitor killing him, but the chances of Ultimate Despair *dying*.
Now, this isn’t just some baseless claims I’m pulling from thin air; I have my reasons for thinking this. You see, Komaeda himself is also a member of Ultimate Despair, so in his game of Russian Roulette he represents Ultimate Despair as a whole during trial. The gun represents the trial itself, and the bullets represent the 5/6 possibility that Ultimate Despair will die. The blank, of course, is their survival. The possibility of Komaeda’s death in that game is exactly the same as Ultimate Despair’s during trial. Reversely, him getting the blank represents the unlikely event of Ultimate Despair’s survival.
In other words, the Russian Roulette incident is not only symbolic of chapter five’s murder, but of it’s _trial_.
Komaeda plays Russian Roulette, and lives, not only because the plot demanded it, but because luck was on his side, but also because it represents his intended goal.
*Komaeda might have set up a gambit he can’t lose but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a preferred outcome.*
Yes that’s right. I _am_ implying that Komaeda’s preferred outcome was Ultimate Despair’s survival. Why? Because like I said before, them becoming absolute hope is the perfect embodiment of Komaeda’s beliefs. By creating a situation where Ultimate Despair had a 1/6 chance of survival, he put his luck to the test again, and one again, he was counting on his good luck.
Komaeda’s luck has two conditions. The first is that after a great misfortune must come an equally great fortune, or at least Komaeda perceives it that way. This one is heavily emphasized throughout the game, especially his FTEs. The second is the more likely Komaeda is to “fail”, the greater his chances at “success”. This best demonstrates himself in his Russian Roulette game, but there are other incidents in his life that prove this.
He had to do a few things to make it as difficult as possible for them to survive. First of all, he created an unsolvable murder that could only be solved by all the evidence he conveniently left in his room. The next is he needed to deceive Monokuma, because if even Monokuma believed he was out to kill them all, it just further convinced the powers that be that Ultimate Despair is destined to die, activating his luck’s hidden condition, guaranteeing their survival.
In other words, by making it as difficult as possible for Ultimate Despair to realistically survive, he guarantees it, as that’s how his luck works. And, even if they do die, because his luck turns, then he still created an absolute hope from the survival of the traitor, who was never corrupted at all. And THAT, is my excessively long theory.
*_tl;dr: Komaeda’s plan was just another hope gambit in extreme mode, except he secretly wanted Ultimate Despair to win over the traitor._*
      Thank you for your time.

Wait. I have Tourette's and OCD so I'll differentiate compulsion and obsession. In the mind appears an "infectious" thought, let's say, you start thinking about a pink rabbit. You can't force the thought out, so you wait until it recedes. Now let's say the obsession it's about making your hands clean. So, you wash your hands so the thought goes away. Now you feel unburdened. But the obsession comes back, so you end up washing your hands again needlessly (compulsion). The uncontrollable thought is the obsession, the act of doing something forced is called compulsion.

I like Komaeda can relate to him especially with the obsession with hope irl mine is Chaos.
I have severe OCD and Anxiety and mood swings and act irrationally and a few other things that are close to him (apart from the bad stuff) so he will always be my favourite character.
I'm always seen as someone who makes a ton of jokes about stuff i shouldn't and acts weird and cheerful when i shouldn't when i'm sad and change really fast and am really self sacrifical.
So the part where he apparently snapped to lead them to the right outcome and his suicide was relatable as fuck.
(always get called a creep or told something is wrong with me so when i saw he was told the same i liked him a ton)
Also i go to therapy due to have mixed beliefs and opinions at all times which leads people to not understanding why im ok with something at one moment but not the next because it's whatever wins the war in my head.
Again so glad they made a character like him!

This video shows why I love Nagito so much. I don’t really characters who are just flat out crazy or are messing everything up just for the sake of being evil. A lot of people interpret Nagito as a crazy person who cares about nothing but hope but there is so much more to his character than just that. By looking at his free time events + looking closely at the way he acts throughout everything (sdr2, udg, and the anime) you can see that there is so much more to him than just a hope lunatic. I personally believe that more of his actual personality was shown in the beginning of sdr2 and in the anime, since the killing game wasn’t in motion. I’ve seen a lot of people say this, and I agree, that the killing game triggered something in him to make him act the way he did. With his cycle of good and bad luck, he wanted to use his life to help everyone gain good luck. In his life, this cycle has always been going on his whole life so it is what he relies on and it’s what he believes is his life now, that his talent causes the terrible bad luck to occur only for good luck to come after. That’s why he felt that if the whole class felt the despair of two of the students dying (which was supposed to be Byakuya and Nagito at first), then they were later to be greeted with good luck, which is probably one of the reasons why he didn’t care if he was cared, as long as it brought hope to everyone around him. Of course, he also didn’t care to be used as a stepping stone for hope because he thought he was worthless compared to all the ultimates but that’s just because of his way of thinking, that compared to ultimates everyone else had little hope while the ultimates has stronger and bigger hope. As I said earlier, he is willing to sacrifice himself and others in order to bring good luck to everyone out of the bad luck caused by the deaths. That was just what I believe though, I don’t know if it is 100% but it’s what I think he is thinking. I also think that the frontotemporal dementia is what’s causing him to think that’s it’s a good idea to do this. A while ago, I did research on what Nagito had, which is Frontotemporal Dementia and Lymphoma which is a brain illness and a kind of cancer. When I did research I found symptoms on the dementia which are poor judgement, loss of empathy, socially inappropriate behavior, lack of inhibition, repetitive compulsive behavior, inability to concentrate or plan, frequent abrupt mood changes, speech difficulties, problems with balance or movement, and memory loss. Though some of these are obviously not present, like he is seen to be very much able to plan since he was able to plan the murder in the first and last chapter, it is clear that some of these are very much present. He clearly doesn’t show much empathy as using other students lives to bring out hope and he also doesn’t make the best choices, as in blowing up the school to prevent the class from taking a test. Also, according to the wiki, he can become very enthusiastic about hope, which opens up his crazy side, but he soon goes back to normal and “is seemingly isn’t aware of what happened.” I feel like this is also an example of explaining why he is like he is since he has the brain illnesses.
Well, I’m going to stop now since this is getting pretty long lol so before I stop I just wanted to say that I recommend reading the Wiki page for the characters since I found out a lot by reading them.
Also just saying, no Nagito is not my favorite. Chiaki, Fuyuhiko, Toko, and Kazuichi comes before him in that order.

Komaeda isn't a villain. To be a villain you must have the intention to cause harm for selfish desires. Komaeda genuinely believes he is helping the world and people in it by doing these aweful things. He isn't evil, He's mentally ill due to years of abuse, torture and endless death starting at a young age. He isn't a monster, at least not on purpose. He is a sweet boy deep down, He just needs someone patient enough to reach out and take his hand. He isn't a physco, A stalker, a yandere or anything like that. He's said it before himself. All he's ever wanted was to be appreciated and loved. And he certainly deserves a break just as much as any of the sdr2 cast.

this was a really good video!! this is a very good explanation of Komaeda and his character, and you did a good job! the only thing I would call incorrect, though, is in chapter 1 Komaeda didn't try to kill Twogami; he was actually trying to get Hanamura to kill Komaeda instead. remember, prior to finding out about their Ultimate Despair status he valued all of their lives above his own. he would never try to kill someone of hope. he always wanted to be a stepping stone for hope. still, a very minor detail and doesn't take away from the video at all!
i'd love to watch a livestream! it's so awesome how your channel is growing and i'm super happy for you! i think it would be fun to dabble in some of the dangan ronpa fan games, since there are so many funny ones! anyway, good job again!!

    Nagito's luck is just insane.
Winning a 5/6 roulette is already crazy but his whole "suicide" plan completely relied on his luck.
It seems as if his luck did stop working so far after his death because they managed to find the "traitor" and vote for her but if everyone would have died, then Junko could have taken all the bodies. I personally think that his luck prevented that even if Nagito himself didn't know it.
That also just shows how crazy it is.

One thing that really struck me about his character was my reassessment of his actions in chapter 5 after seeing the 2.5 OVA. In the anime, we really get to see how much he actually cares for his classmates, especially since he wishes that his bad luck would bring them good luck. Because of that, the context of his actions in chapter 5 change; initially after learning that they were Remnants of Despair, he was disturbed and caught completely off guard. That's why he was so excessively rude to them all during the fourth trial. After he had some time to let it sink in, he probably reflected on how they all had forgotten Junko's influence and at this point they were not Ultimate Despair; he also probably remembered what happened to Mikan after she regained her memories. He likely feared that they would all eventually remember and revert back to what they had been. Because of how much he cared about them as they were, he probably decided to kill them all before they could remember. In doing so, he would defeat not only the despair they would bring to the world, but also the despair they would cause themselves if they ever reverted. Thus, how he rationalized that his actions would make him into the Ultimate Hope.

I always thought, thanks to the use of the Japanese wording and the fact he has dementia, as he isn't very in tune with his own feelings, the other's feelings o common sense in the way society forms u into, he truly loves Hinata, however he can't difference between certain types of love or he simply doesn't bother to analyze his own feelings fearing the depth of them, the real kind of them and the consequences they may have on Hinata.
I see it as a love confession but not quite as a romantic one, even when I do ship KomaHina a lot, I know in canon the entire statement is more complicated than just a shipping moment. As you say, Hinata is the one who exemplifies hope the most in the cast, tries to understand him and actually cares about what he says (even if he's not precisely polite about it). I always think about it like a small chick following the one who's protecting him/cares about him and, at the same time, someone tho doesn't compute at all the fact someone may care about him AFTER knowing how he is.

Hajime tries, but in chapter 5 you can see that he really doesn't. I wound up creating an OC whose main purpose was to befriend and grow close to him, someone who would actually mourn him when he died, and who would actually feel the same despair I did when I learned that he orchestrated the entire thing. There would be quite a bit more to Mirai Akarui beyond that, but that is my initial purpose in creating her.

My favorite character is Nagito :) I know a lot of people didn’t like him but I feel it’s because they didn’t understand his character. Nagito’s damn smart and doesn’t hesitate to go against the group to stick to his ideals. I mean honestly.... D2 wouldn’t be half as interesting if Nagito wasn’t around 😂 And a lot of what he says sounds like gibberish but when you learn about his past, it makes a lot of sense why he thinks the way he does. I think his ability has really pulled him through all the terrible stuff he experienced as a child because... he had nothing and no one else to rely on other than that. For him to know that no matter how bad his situation is, he could always depend on his luck to give him hope. No wonder he’s so obsessed, no wonder he holds the Ultimates at such a high place. It adds a lot of complexity to his character. And watching the anime OVA really blew my mind as well... though Nagito boasts about other’s talent and abilities, he actually wishes they didn’t exist so that he (and others) could feel happiness. He hides his pain under all that crazy facade and we only get to see his true feelings only a couple of times in the game. Like when Mikan tells him that he doesn’t have anyone to love and there’s no one to accept him. Then later during his fifth free time he tells Hajime that he doesn’t want to die alone and wants somebody to love. And how he really does mean it when he says he’ll give up his life for hope because imagine what kind of luck will come from something as great as a life. I mean... like damn... everything that he believes in could really just be to protect himself. The poor baby! Well, I could talk about him forever because that’s just how deep his character is lol... I love Nagito!!!

i honestly love nagito way to much and its not because he is “crazy” it’s because he is the very first character in drv2 that caught my eye the moment i saw him,and plus he is a very interesting character and it also will take sometime to fully understand his character

I hate when people unironically say stuff like "Nagito did nothing wrong". It just makes their liking of his character feel superficial. Like, he's such a good, interesting character in large part BECAUSE of the bad shit he does; The way he manipulates people, the way he treats anyone without an Ultimate Talent like trash, the way he just disregards human life as long as it's in the name of "hope", etc. Take that away and he's just a dime-a-dozen self-depricating pretty boy.

I really like Nagito because I find him to be a very interesting character. Even if his beliefs are a bit warped, he still has (generally) good intentions and greatly cares about others more than himself. It’s pretty amazing how he can still be so optimistic even with all the tragedies that have happened to him, but then again there was always something good that outweighed or balanced out the tragedies.
But there is one thing I strongly disagree with him on, and it’s his belief that everyone is born with talent and that they don’t have to put in any effort to do anything. I personally believe the complete opposite, that you aren’t born with talent, and you have to put in a lot of effort and work to become good at it. The more effort you put in, the greater the reward would be in the future. That’s probably why I didn’t like him when he chastised Hajime for being a Reserve Course student because though Hajime didn’t have talent, he put in effort to get into Hope’s Peak (studying hard for the entrance exam), unlike Nagito, who was selected at random and put in no work to get into Hope’s Peak. (Come to think of it, now I sound like Kiyotaka… Maybe that’s why I like his character, too…)
But overall, whether you love him or hate him, he is without a doubt a very intriguing character that left an impression on everyone in the game and everyone playing Danganronpa.

Nagito was one of my favorite character, also he never tried to kill the ultimate imposter in the game it was never shown who he would have killed, his luck manipulated the events so the ultimate imposter got killed instead of him.

I don't believe that he was lying about his past because he introduces himself with that backstory to the reader, so has no reason to lie.

If I ever met Nagito in person
The first thing I would ever do is hug him and support him so that he could stop lowering his self-esteem
Yeah I know people see him as a bit bizzare but c'mon everyone can change
I mean we change in our personalities
Not all of us have perfect lives
And besides everything is in the past now its a new beginning!

    In Super Despair girls
    (spoiler alert)
    Toko (when Genocide) said
    something along the lines of
"You're a pretty boy yourself so killing you would be fun"
or something like that to Nagito
So now we know that even Toko thinks Nagito is a pretty boy :D

nagito is honestly such an interesting character and it’s so sad that it took me so long to understand his character and I fully blame the fandom for that. His character is riddled down to either two ‘stereotypes’, one being that he is some chaotic antagonist that causes only harm to others or that he is a ‘gay uwu rat boy, who’s in love with hajime senpai’ which he is neither.

I'd love to see one on Aoi Asahina. Perhaps you could dig deep and tell us what her biggest insecurities are, and analyse her to her full potential? I figure she'd be tough to talk about on a deeper level, since she's so open. :3c

Danganronpa 3's Despair arc does explain how Junko "convinced" him to become a Remnant of Despair, as well as expands on his character more or less. There's also DR 2.5 which is an episode purely centered around Nagito

Nagito made Danganronpa 2 so fun. Him and Kokichi were so fun to hate that they looped back around to being fun to love. They’re crazy, dangerous, and by far the most interesting characters in their respective games.
