Watching the last season I can say poor Diana looked like a puppet who was manipulated by Dodi (who was under his dad's pressure to do so). In fact Diana could have avoided the fatal car crash as she didn't even want to be in Paris on that day. Dodi insisted they have to stop in Paris. They indeed visited the castle where that previous king and American wife lived before her death.
She was trapped to be somewhere she didn't want to. After Crown episodes I blame her death on Fayed family.
And let's be honest that relationship (potential marriage)with Dodi would have been a disaster for her as Fayed family intention was only to get into British aristocrats circle and they didn't care about Diana as private person, they just wanted to use her. On the internet I found that Dodi used drugs which wasn't even pictured in Crown. What a disaster. Poor Diana 😒😒

I've blamed this on the Fayeds since it happened.... I've always said Diana left an Al Fayed hotel in a Fayed car, with a Fayed bodyguard while sitting next to a Fayed! And that last-minute decision to leave the Ritz . It didn't take a psychic to see the end results. 😢

I remember those days. From the beginning of the courtship until her shocking death it was full-on intense media coverage.
Regarding Mohammad Al-Fayed imo he viewed a relationship between Dodi and Diana as his way to finally enter the English aristocracy. The romance with Dodi appeared to be a summer fling. Diana had just broken-up with the man she loved and wanted to marry, surgeon Hasnat Khan, and Dodi was a convenient way to make him jealous. Diana deserved much better than she received from the men in her life. May she RIP.

I agree, very accurate observation, especially on the fact that the series really panders to Charles, portraying him first as an ambitious workaholic (season 5), then as as an empathetic voice of reason (season 6) - as we know from history, he was neither. Which brings me to the baddies of the series, where Mohamed AlFayed was really vilified. He didn’t have as much control over Dodi as the series made you think and Dodi was more of a fun rich spoiled kid which is what attracted the immature Diana to him in the first place - in real life he was definitely not the angry, brooding character that the series portrayed him as. I’m going to play devil’s advocate here because both Mohamed Al Fayed and Prince Charles have massive gains from Diana’s death and how they handled it. Let’s start with Al Fayed. He immediately called the accident an assasination, a murder, by the royal family who wanted Diana out of the headlines because she was eclipsing Charles, even after the divorce. (To be honest, a street light could outshine Charles, the man is a charisma black hole). Regardless, if we’re playing devil’s advocate, we could say that maybe Al Fayed was trying to redirect blame somewhere else after his security guys failed at protecting Diana, who was way too high profile for them to ever deal with and they just didn’t know how to handle the situation. Now let’s move on to Charles. Still playing devil’s advocate. He was in the middle of a campaign to bring out and legitimize Camilla. When Diana suddenly died an opportunity presented itself. I’m sure that Mark Bolland advised him, against the Queen’s wishes, to have Diana buried with all the honors of a royal. In the public’s mind he would look more like a widower and less as a divorce, since it was so fresh, and people would be more sympathetic to him moving on and marrying Camilla. Just something to think about.

I binged watched the whole six episodes and loved it. I found it tastefully done and even learned a few things such as Mohammed El Fayad being the puppet master behind the budding relationship. I also appreciated how Dodi was portrayed insofar as the media, at that time, portrayed him as being as sleazy as his father. Although in the series, he was portrayed as weak and a daddy’s boy, he also came across as kind and sweet. The overall acting was superb. Will definitely watch again.

He may have played with the newspapers, but so did Diana etc. I do not think his grief was extreme, as parents who lose their children commonly show such extreme grief. Poor man does not need this in death.

I did notice that the vast majority of scenes between Diana and Dodi were just those two, with no one else around, so anything that happened at those times is completely conjecture because both are dead now. There WAS that scene with Diana talking on the phone with a friend (I don't know who that's supposed to be) back home while she was with Dodi saying she was going to dump him and come back home and try to put her life in order. I don't know if that was based on a real phone call and the friend has said that's what Diana said, but even if it was real, it could have just been Diana reassuring her friend and not being completely honest. I confess that since I was 7 at the time, and Diana's death was the first time I even heard of her, I only know about this stuff in retrospect. So I honestly thought there was more to Diana and Dodi's relationship, probably because I unknowingly bought into Muhomed Al-Fayed's propaganda that they were doomed star-crossed lovers. It was a bit of a surprise to find out that it really was just a summer fling that may have just ended right about when it did with them going separate ways if they hadn't died. But history will always remember them dying together, regardless of how serious the relationship actually was.
I think, based on what Prince Harry said in Spare, that he might have built up the relationship in his mind retrospectively, too, because he said that he and Willy met Dodi and didn't really care one way or another about him. They were just happy if Mommy was happy. So that was different from the show. Also, he has said in interviews over the years, plus in Spare, that the last phone call was rushed, and they didn't really want to keep talking to her because they wanted to go out and play with their cousins. (Where are the cousins in the show? Why does it never show the OTHER grandchildren of the queen?) The show made it look like they were eager to stay on the phone with her. Also, he mentioned that one of the Spencer aunts brought him the final birthday present, the Playstation, but he says he's only heard about that secondhand. He doesn't actually remember it, himself, probably because he was in a state of shock at the time. But I guess it has been reported from enough sources that it's considered fact. He also mentioned that he and William weren't really that bothered by the walk behind the casket. It's been used as a tragic image over and over in the media, but honestly it upset Charles Spencer and the general public far more than it did the princes. They were bolstered up by the fact that they didn't walk alone.
As for Charles, I think that while the exact details are likely incorrect because no one knows besides Charles, himself, I think they did get the spirit of what happened correct. It is generally reported that he stepped up and treated Diana with the proper respect in her death. That he advocated for her to be treated with the respect afforded to the mother of the future king, which is why she was given a royal funeral despite technically no longer being royal. As for that scene of him bawling at the hospital, I haven't heard that before, but there were obviously a lot of witnesses, hospital staff not palace staff, that may have reported that.

This is a dramatization of events not a documentary. It’s a blend of fiction and fact. The writer isn’t in the room for the conversations and actions that occur. For example we know from “Spare” that William wasn’t in the room when Charles told Harry his mom died. We also know that the boys were playing with their cousins when their mother called and they were eager to return to the fun. In Peter Morgan’s movie “The Queen” the focus is on Tony Blair. In “The Crown” Charles is the focus of the attempt to inform the Queen that action must be taken. Same creator, different take. This is drama. It’s also why there’s no need to add an advisory warning. If people can’t tell the difference that’s the real problem.

  • @pamh1648
    @pamh1648 11 місяців тому +13

I liked the portrayal of Charles in this, and think it was probably quite accurate based on his personality and behaviour. But he has always had his haters, who will disagree despite evidence to the contrary. I had also thought that Dodi was a fling to make Hasnat Khan jealous - who she had recently split up with. I recall an interview with her butler who said that she asked if Hasnat had seen the photos, which seemed to me to indicate she was trying to make him jealous. But I find the split with Dodi before the crash harder to believe, in that their body language in the lift seems to be very close, like intimate partners, not people who have just split up. But the show did present a believable story, although we will never know. I also think William going for a long walk indicates at that time he understood the magnitude of what had happened, and was going through the normal grieving process. I felt the villains in the show were Al Fahid, but also the Queen and Prince Philip who came across as cold and lacking in their relationship with Charles, who had a better understanding and more awareness and compassion in that moment than they both did.

In real life if you put words in other peoples mouths that is usually frowned on and in some instances they can be held liable. Because the crown is classed as a drama series it is acceptable, I was watching the Royal tea where two royal reporters were saying that sometimes they have to remind themselves that it is not real, so if they battle as royal correspondents then how are the average people who have no knowledge of the royal family meant to differentiate? Thank you Tessa. In reality the Royals were truly nasty to Diana. The crown is certainly dialed it back because they were absolutely vicious towards Diana.
Neither the queen nor Charles could handle her popularity and worse still her love for the people and the people's love for her. It just drove them raging mad and that includes all of them, including Anne and Camilla.

They haven't dialed it back. They treated Meghan the same way, worse actually. All was great until she outshone Kate, unintentionally, and then it was war. H&M were getting better press than Charles/Camilla and Will/Kate and so they literally had them run out of town.

Because people just never get excited about them the way they did/do Diana, Harry or Meghan and they feel as the King and Heir, they should get the most positive press and people should want to see THEM most. It's just never been the case though. They are so uninteresting, unrelatable, and standoffish that people just don't care about them. Diana and H&M actually care about the people, interact with them genuinely, and try to make things better FOR the people. And they were vilified and lied about for it. I just can't forgive that. The monarchy is dead to me now.@@Singhramdas

Watching The Crown is like reading a supermarket tabloid. Some truth in there, but not enough to justify its existence. I especially hate this season. Imelda Staunton only has one facial expression. Stiff and crabby. Elizabeth Debicki 's portrayal of Diana is all eye makeup, a couple well worn facial expressions and posture . Her acting is probably OK but it's hard to get past the cartoon Diana they turned her into. And who is it that thinks William is incapable of standing up straight?? Yes he walked with his head down behind Diana's coffin. But before that, he had been hunched over for most of the season. So the poignancy of William's lowered head during the funeral procession was totally gone. Thrown away by how overused that posture was in all that came before. The only two actors well suited to their roles are Leslie Manville (love her!) and Claudia Harrison. Perfect show to hate watch. 😂

The worst was that Diana was genuinely loved across the world not just Britain. This just drove the queen and Charles completely mad and no matter what she did, she would never be part of the family in any way shape or form.

Charles is just as complicit in Diana's death as Fayed. He was thrilled she was gone because there wasn't a chance he could marry Camilla while his former wife was still living. That was the problem w/ Margaret. Her lover's former wife was still alive, so in the eyes of the church, he was still married. Diana dying meant Charles was a 'widower' so he could marry again. No way was he so upset about her death except in that he knew he'd be feeling the heat for a long while, as would Camilla. But for him, it solved most of his problems. Charles has ALWAYS been jealous of anyone who took the spotlight away from him, and William has been too. Both were happy to make up stories about H&M (and Diana before) and get them run out of town fearing for their lives. As always though, and as with Diana, getting rid of them never fixed their problem, just made it worse. It Martyred them instead. The press STILL highlighted anything they did over anything Charles, WIlliam or Kate did or do. They will always outshine them whether they like it or not. Instead of being jealous and trying to vilify them, they should have used them to further solidify the future of the monarchy with all the great press they could have garnered for them and all the hard work they would have done for the Crown. But no, jealousy made them weak and now all that's left is the boring royals nobody wants to hear about. They never do anything worthwhile to the world. They don't care about the actual people like Diana and H&M did. They cut off the best thing they had going for them. Now all they have is ribbon cuttings no one watches and parades in their own honor that costs the people millions. They are just not good people.

If only real life is so black n white, all bad against all good guys.
but not surpising this came from Britain. 😂

I love it so far but I don’t care for the way they eased up on Charles as we all know he was very unlikeable even in America we still don’t care for either him or his wife.
It was even said that the Queen referred to her as “That wicked woman” and a lot of us don’t blame her. Even if they did get along later in life but with this timeline we know the Queen was not for it or her being around her.
I think they are going the extra mile to make those two more likable but as you could see Camilla didn’t sheared one tear when Diana death was announced she only asked about the boys.
Don’t know what is true to that part as a lot of this happened way before my time as I was a child when Diana passed.
All my life, my parents & grandparents have all said they never cared for the Royal family especially after the situation with Diana.
Some even refused to believe the RF didn’t have anything to do with her death so Charles could remarry till this day
I just wish that they had stayed true to it as the media should never buckle because Charles is King now.
This show is world wide & he is not our King therefore we don’t go by those standards of not disrespecting him.
Anywho great commentary, and outlook on the show. I’m always curious to know how Brits feel about Charles still being able to marry her & still becoming their King.
Though I agree he should have been able to marry her but because he lied to his people about a fake marriage, never apologized as well he shouldn’t have been able to do both.
His mother had to sacrifice at 25 years old yet Charles didn’t want to bend or fold for the crown & still got it.
God bless the queen, she is truly missed & did a great job for her nation.
    Thanks for the review again❤

There’s nothing fiction about the crown. It’s history based on true life story.
