This channel is one of three for which I simply go ahead and hit the “Like button” before even watching the video because you’ve never uploaded one I don’t absolutely love, and I just can’t imagine that you ever will. Thanks again for yet _another_ amazing song lesson!
Another brilliant song selection... bravo Andy! Doobies have always been one of my fav bands since I was a kid, primarily because of the incredible finger-picking songs that Pat Simmons performed. The solo in this song is also something I have been trying to learn..so difficult. You break down these difficult songs with ease...thanks Andy! The Doobie brothers always seemed to include hidden gems on their albums...difficult but beautiful finger-picking instrumentals such as "Slat Key Soquel Rag" and "Larry the logger two-step". I feel that Pat Simmons and Lindsey Buckingham have been the most influential artists that have fueled my interest in learning guitar and in general the most melodic and challenging finger-picking solos and duets... thank you so much Andy for bringing these gems back to us!
This is a general question, but I'll ask it here since I'm working on this right now. Where should we discuss and ask questions about the TAB? Sometimes the Tab doesn't completely match up with your corresponding UA-cam lesson, so it would be nice to be able to ask advise and refer to bar number, etc.
there are many great guitar channels on youtube but this one is THE channel to come to when you want to learn a tune either exactly as it was recorded or as it was played live. It's in a class all of its own and absolutely the one I trust the most, hands down. But where the channel really shines is for the songs that require two guitar parts, I don't know anywhere else that shows both in anything even approaching the detail SUAP goes to. That said, if I could request that only one title is added to the already massive existing catalogue it would be Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind", particularly for Red Shea's parts. Pretty. pretty please.
@@joriszsz95 : I also subscribe to James James channel. He's a fabulous teacher too. He doesn't always go into the same level of details as Andy (which makes his lessons usually shorter) but he nails the tunes exactly like recorded, which is what I look for. Another great teacher who specializes in how to play Beatles songs to perfection is Mike Pachelli. He usually provides interesting historic information about the Beatles and the tune he's teaching. Having all these great teachers available on UA-cam is such a gift for those of us who want to learn these guitar melodies.
Agreed this channel is by far THE BEST instructional channel. I hope he sees our posts and knows we greatly appreciate all of the time and effort he puts into these videos for us.
@@edwardgarner1299 Agreed. Can I suggest one more so people are aware of some of the outstanding quality instruction available on UA-cam if one knows where to look? First of all though, Thank You Andy from so many of us. Wish we lived closer! Anyway, there is a guitar teacher from Berklee School of Music named Tomo Fujita on YT also. Where Andy excels in teaching songs in detail, Tomo excels in teaching proper technique. Between these two, one can find endless hours of things to practice. And of course there are others. Jack Ruch, Corey Congilo, Paul Davids, David Hamburger and of course, Rick Beato to throw just a few names out, but there are many other fine instructional channels worthy of our attention. With all those choices though, these two just seem to have a special gift for breaking down lessons into approachable bite sized pieces. And for folks like me, learning techniques of how to teach then becomes a benefit for my own students. These folks are very good guitar teachers!
I've learned many fingerstyle songs on this channel. This one isn't the hardest, but definitely the most annoying to get down pat. Especially when trying to sing along with it.
just so you know, your lessons are delivered with the precision and clarity that makes that gives the likes of me the kick to broaden my horizons and do better.
"...it sounds so simple and then you go to try it and it's like 'What the hell?!?' It's so much harder..." true words. But with this guidance I have a chance. Thanks Andy.
I have a noodle illness that has been slowly killing me for the last 30 years. So for the last year or two I've been forcing myself to play more rhythm guitar, and especially more acoustic.. This channel helps that quest. Much appreciated.
Decided to give the Merle picking a real shot by learning this... playing for a long time but never actually learned proper technique for fingerstyle. Thanks to your videos I learned this and the solo! Spent the past month perfecting it. I am one happy man thanks to you!! Next up cannonball rag 🤣 at half speed
Very well done. Pat Simmons is such a great crafter of songs and a very underrated guitarist. I was able to see them a couple times but one that stands out to me, was when he and Skunk Baxter sat down on the front of the stage with their legs hanging off and just jammed, it was awesome.
Great breakdown, as always. One suggestion for fun. instead of the hammer on on the low E (D) string, bend it up instead. Or throw a bend up on the second hammer-on. Works well to provide that “slidey” vibe provided by the violin part, but when you are just a solo guitar. Love that Pat Simmons! Loma Prieta, my mountain home!
Hey Andy. Sent money and will be sending some more now. For those of us who appreciate precision and accuracy, you have no equal. Having said that, I am 66 years old and have played stringed instruments for over 50 years. It's the little things, the nuances that make some songs so memorable and this one is a prime example. One can hack it out and probably get away with it but the little details are what make all the difference and you present those beautifully. Even the first parts need to be practiced carefully in order to pull a listener in. Once again, Thank You from all of us. You have a knack for teaching the heart and soul of a song, not just where to put one's fingers.
This song is a little over my pay grade. I’m not the best finger-picker (plus I like to sing as I strum & play). Tho I always appreciate a real guitar player like u👍 But basic cowboy chords for me ;)
In the demo, I kept waiting for the solo in the bridge, with that series of trills that walks down the neck. Nevertheless, I’ll learn it. This song always reminds me of the mid 70s, when I was in a DCA drum corps, the Baltimore Yankee-Rebels, and we sang this song on the bus a lot. Thanks, Andy!
Super lesson! Thanks Andy! Great song! But pretty involved and a lot of moving parts! I’m going to be working on this one for a long time! I’ve always wanted to learn this one! Perfect as always! 😉👍😎🎸😅👌
I can thank you for this awesome lesson (#$). When you tell your friends that your passion is playing guitar you better know a few tunes. You have inspired me to get back to the daily practice. I want to be that cool guitar playing grandpa and to keep inspiring musicality to my family as did my grandmother on the piano and my uncle on the guitar. Well done. Music makes life so much nicer.
I put on some Doobie Brothers while driving yesterday... and I'm looking forward to this challenge. Bloody great lesson mate on a crackin song cheers :D
I absolutely love your channel and can't tell you how many tunes that I thought I had down pat were wrong. Not by much, but enough to make me go over every song I've played for the last almost 50 years of playing them with your tutorials. One thing I have to bring up though. I can barely hear what you are playing. This could just be my 66 year old "Marshall" ears, but I do think you could stand to raise your your audio levels a bit. Thank you for another awesome tune and again, a great channel.
Hi Andy. Heard you're not doing too great at the moment. Hope to have you back in the saddle soon. You are a fine teacher and such pleasant company of an evening when the family are away to bed and I can get my guitar out. Wishing you good health sir. Oh and I made a donation too yesterday. Everyone should if they are getting something from these tutorials. C'mon loyal subscribers! If Andy can't work just now he can't earn so I'm sure even the smallest of donations would be welcome
I agree with all previous comments. Andy and his tutorials are in a class all of their own. I would argue that his content is as good, or imo, quite often much better than guitar instruction/tutorials available only as a purchase for download (or if anyone else remembers the days of guitar instruction dvds, and prior to that, VHS tapes....). It's all there, production quality, well edited, great sound, top-level note by note instruction and breakdowns, and most important for me anyway, a reverence for the originating artist/s and the music and a thoughtful look in to history of that track. And I would absolutely recommend to anyone that digs these tutorials to visit his website and read the blog posts that accompany all of these tutorials.
adding...this might be one of the most fun acoustic riffs I've learned...and it is harder than it looks. While it is travis picking, there's some sitting on beats and pushing n pulling that makes this groove. Gonna be shedding this for a bit for sure.
Fantastic playing and lesson. Just saw the Doobies at Bethel Woods. Blackwater was one of the encores. I sit down with my guitar and hit UA-cam and there you. Thanks much!
Fantastic. I came online looking for a dong to learn today. And you are! Presenting black water! I love your teaching as much as i love your playing! Thank you!
I can play this, but as per usual Andy I picked up a few finer points that I wasn't doing .Thanks Andy great tuition for a great song. Any chance of teaching SOUTH CITY MIDNIGHT LADY?👌👌
I know this is a year old but I thought I'd remark about something I am hearing. In the second part of picking I am hearing a very similar pattern that sounds like "Steamer Lane Breakdown" from the album "Minute by Minute" by the Dobbies. Both songs were written by Patrick Simmons. I'll pull up the music to see if I'm right but it sure does seem very similar to my ears. I am gong to learn this song if it kills me!! LOL...
“…then ya go to try it and it’s like…. What the hell?” Lol. The old Townes Van Zandt tune If I Needed You is similar but different structure. Same fretting hand action here and there. Thank You. Great job.
I was wondering, would you happen to know what is Pat Simmons thumbpick setup? I did some research (not that I'm good at it) but can't really find the story about it!
As a 53 year old self taught hack, I want to thank you for this awesome breakdown. It’s fun learning songs that I grew up listening to as a kid. And this is a complex beauty. Your tone sounds spot on too. 👍🙏🏻
This is great and I checked out the link also - right on the money! I'll be visiting your site and supporting you for all the time you put into these lessons.
The guitar part is pretty tricky but I’ve got most of it down thanks to this video. But singing the verses while playing is down right hard haha the timing has me all messed up
This is great, but I wish you’d break down the chords for those who aren’t fluent in them. Saying “slide to E” just don’t mean anything to me. Or I wish you gave a tip to accomplish plucking the g, d, and c strings individually but also simultaneously, I can’t seem to figure that out
For the opening part I'm only fast enough to do what you do, I keep trying slowly and trying to speed up, and I'm so far away! So I pulled back and did what I can do. This is what I'm doing. 1) 1-2/0 then strum string 2 fret 1 and string 4 fret 2 2) bend 6th string fret 3, then 2nd string fret 3 and 3rd string fret 2. That's all I can include and keep time! Butt it sounds fine, everyone will know what I'm playing. And I'll keep trying to add those other elements. I prefer the sound of a 1/4 bend on 6th string fret 3 over the feet 2 to 3 slide. Used string numbers because there's 3 D strings! I just can't add all the elements you have and keep time. I'll return in a year and try to add more. Thank you for the excellent lesson! Guitar is so funny, people ask how long it takes to learn. It's not like learning how to drive a car. You've gained a certain level of mastery of guitar. And that's the difference, to be good you have to master things. You mentioned that you can't teach every little thing, that's the mastery part, you see a million individual things going on in this little piece, not just notes. Thanks again!
Very VERY, nice. Dude. Your giving toneDr. A run for the money. To those looking to play this tune. Forget that. You don't play this song. You feel it. Once ya got that feelin. You'll play it just like you own it. (Experience talking) but that's just my .our 02
This is such a great tutorial for us non-finger pickers because this feels like a foreign concept. I have tried to tackle this song once before and gave up after getting most of it, but I always remember this video because how good you explain everything. Sometimes shelving something for a little while helps me refocus when I come back so hopefully the second time will be the time I master this beast. Thank you!
Could we please get Do you feel like we do from frampton comes alive You will literally break the internet if you did an awesome lesson on that Hopefully!!
My favorite so far! And I found it by accident/ I was noodling around in drop D tuning, and thought I could figure this out, but kept hitting a few walls. I looked online and sonofagun, there you were! My favorite guitar teacher! If I ever hit the lottery, you get any car you want. Or any guitar set up. Whatever, we all owe you so much. Cheers!
When I was learning the first part I was thinking man there’s a lot of intricacies in this part. Then he went to second part and he was like there’s a lot of intricacies in this part. I’ve got the first part down but am still trying to get more comfortable with it, still mess up a few then play a few perfect. Tomorrow I’ll start the second part 🥱 This guy is the best!

The more I learn & play the songs of the past, the more I realize just how good these guys were or are.
I wish I found this channel years ago. Literally the most accurate playing to Every riff. Exact tone, exact playing, just Wow.

One of my fav songs of all time (and one of the few my voice fits into). Still have the original vinyl that I bought along w Pablo Cruise.

Between suapg. And Jamesjames. I have a top quality school. Thank you so much. This is premium.
Great to watch you play, I am damn sure i can never get to play this song. Love the Doobies
Thank you so much for playing through the song in the begining. Other videos just have some Dood talking the whole time... So slow..
“…then ya go to try it and it’s like…. What the hell?”
Lol. The old Townes Van Zandt tune If I Needed You is similar but different structure. Same fretting hand action here and there. Thank You.
Great job.
Fantastic, thank you. Would love to see a lesson on Toulouse Street, a deeper cut but also one of Patrick's fingerpicking gems. Almost none on UTube
I was wondering, would you happen to know what is Pat Simmons thumbpick setup? I did some research (not that I'm good at it) but can't really find the story about it!
Never could get the hang of this song till now. Been a fan of the Doobies for years. Other Drop D songs: Nobody and The Captain and Me title track.
I have loved this song since it came out… beautiful job! Thanks..
This dude blows everyone else away doing lessons on utube 🤘
As a 53 year old self taught hack, I want to thank you for this awesome breakdown. It’s fun learning songs that I grew up listening to as a kid. And this is a complex beauty. Your tone sounds spot on too. 👍🙏🏻

"hundreds of times" LOL, yep. I'm at aboot 50 right now Andy.
Wow, what an amazing lesson. Thank you so much!
Great Work friend I truly enjoy learning your tutorials 👍
Never thought about playing this song before this phenomenal tutorial! You have provided the tools to make it happen! THANK YOU!
Best lesson in this one I’ve ever seen by far.
I knew it! I knew that first note was a B-flat. Everybody else for some reason thinks it's a B.
Anyone who dislikes your videos should close their UA-cam account.
Can't stop now. Need the solo!
Your wish is granted.
@@Lance37a Andy is the best!
An incredible song! Thank you for sharing this lesson.
A fair harmonal tidbit to chew on, not hormonal ... A 25 1 to b3 to major 2 25 to 25 kind of cool
Andy, you are incredible, sir. Hope you’re doing well.
This is great! Songs like these are why I still play after 45 years
🎶' Well I built me a raft and she's ready for floatin"🎶😎👍
Yes!! Right on. Been waiting for this one. Thank you!!
Damn this song is way harder than it sounds, thanks for the great breakdown!
Impiccable as usual. I mean I can't pick it. I'll give a try.
What an amazing channel! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
No wonder I could never make it sound right. Drop D
Have a really hard time with Travis picking
Does anybody have any tips on handling the Travis part?
great song. even better breakdown.
This is great, but I wish you’d break down the chords for those who aren’t fluent in them. Saying “slide to E” just don’t mean anything to me. Or I wish you gave a tip to accomplish plucking the g, d, and c strings individually but also simultaneously, I can’t seem to figure that out
Dude, if you need to be shown an E chord then this song is over your head! Come on man!
Such clever writing. Love it.
How do you play Toulouse Street would you do that
Just....brilliant,thank you sir
For the opening part I'm only fast enough to do what you do, I keep trying slowly and trying to speed up, and I'm so far away! So I pulled back and did what I can do. This is what I'm doing.
1) 1-2/0 then strum string 2 fret 1 and string 4 fret 2
2) bend 6th string fret 3, then 2nd string fret 3 and 3rd string fret 2.
Cheers!
Best version on youtube for sure and so clearly and well explained thanks!
The kind of song I keep coming back to the very beginning of the video each day 😅
But worth it for the progress. Thanks
Excellent lesson. Please if you want to can you do a lesson on how to play dark eyed cajun woman by the doobie brothers.
Such a tongue-twister (so to speak). Great fun learning this!
Would still love to see your take on some of Leo Kottke songs from the 6 string and 12 string guitar (armadillo) album
