  • What makes Japan's top wagyu beef brands so popular?
Kobe Beef. Matsuzaka Beef. Omi Beef. These are the top three wagyu brands in Japan historically but in the last 20-30 years Japanese Wagyu brands have really increased. This episode starts the Omi Beef, a Kuroge Wagyu Story. We track the beef back to the ranch in the Omihachiman area near Lake Biwa.
Japanese Wagyu Beef has a long history dating back to the Sengaku Period when European missionaries brought their beef eating culture to Japan. During the Tokugawa Shogunate or Edo period, eating 4-legged creatures was banned, but when the Meiji Era (1868) ended the Shogunate, western culture was adapted and gradually Japanese returned to eating tasty wagyu beef in the cities.

Ok. Im left speechless. John, youre getting better and better at making this style of documentary. I can say your editing, drawingvthe viewer in to the story, is second to none. Narration, background music, it all blends to make an A+ class of fun and entertainment. Really, world class productions could learn a lot from you! Thanks for bringing us another very very interesting episode about Japan. I will eventually get there and go trough the country once all of these corona stuff is over, only problem will be choosing what to see from all of the places you have shown us! But definitively this prefecture will be no1 spot to visit! Keep up the great work! Whenever I am watching your show, its a breeze of fresh air to me!

Great story on the history of Japanese Omi Beef. I had no idea that the popularity was a result of having a more westernized palate. I am impressed that the ranch is so clean and that the animals are well cared for. It's no wonder this Japanese product is world renown.

Some people really don’t understand what and where some of the history came from.
But if you have a knowledge about the Japanese Castle you can have an idea or maybe it can give you a chance to think about many things like” why the most colorful castle built here in Shiga?” Although that castle is gone but it always remains the fact that Shiga is very important place to those Emperors and Shoguns.
If you know about the word “ SHOKUNIN “ the word shokunin can translates to MASTER” and it came from the SHIGA SHOKUNIN.
This place is also will know as the place of Rich Daimyo .
They are all will know for funding the higher leaders long long time ago.
The Shiga Shokunin travels around Japan and spread their knowledge of craftsmanship and business.
If there’s no Shiga Shokunin then probably there’s no Japanese Culture to amaze now.
There’s also a music instrument name Biwa the name took from the Biwako lake because it is shape like the lake.
Shiganian is shy and quiet people, they hates fights and debates.
So if some Kyoto people talking b...d about Shiga “ people here are just saying ( let them talk ) hahaha hahaha

    • @anamarievivero7774
      @anamarievivero7774 3 роки тому +3

      By the way .
The shiganian has been eating beef before it became famous in Japan.
And they didn’t learn from westerners for sure.
There’s so many westerners living here and they do not speak much like I do .
I bet they are all become what I called A Real Shiganian”! Hahaha hahaha
Like Shiganian says “ LET THEM SPEAK “.

Really loving the videography here, you can really feel the improvement over the years. And this is a personal preference but I also the mellowing down of the audio (not as hyped or exaggerated as the previous channel's). I feel the more subtle touch is a better match for the aesthetic of the place and topic. The in medias res intro is quite a nice change too. Nothing subtly hypes up an episode on beef like a big hunk of A5 beef with a human holding it for context.
Great job here John, excited for the next video!

Waiting patiently for travel to begin again, hoping Hawaii is on the sooner than later list! Take care and hope you and Kanae are genki! Love & aloha*xo

Why do I bother watching this after I eat breakfast? This just made me hungry instantly! Very curious to try Omi beef as it’s the only beef I haven’t tried among the big three. John, you’re looking much fitter nowadays btw!

I like how extensive the train system is throughout Japan.
Also nice to see exciting content. Too bad that your old channel got taken over by your backing company.

Don't be fooled though. Once you leave the liveline along the pacific coast connections tend to be far more sparse. Still (mostly) on time and clean and everything but in some places you will only have 1-2 trains or busses per day.
Requires a bit of planning but mostly a price I'm willing to pay. If it turns out to be impossible Rental Cars are always an option. Extra cost over the JR Railway Pass though.

I mean this was pretty much pretty propagandish, cattle literally don't get to move out of a 2-3 meter pen
